MANKATO, Minn. (February 27, 2022) - UW-Stout closed out the Bethany Lutheran Kwik Trip Invitational with losses to a pair of schools from the Mankato, Minn., area. Stout lost a 7 a.m. call to host Bethany Lutheran College, 9-1, in five innings and a 9-6 slugfest to nearby Gustavus Adolphus College.
Against the Gusties (1-2), the Blue Devils (4-4) jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings.
After allowing three runners on the in the top of the first inning, but allowing no Gustavus runs, the Blue Devils were stealing in their half of the inning.
Korin Hall drew a lead off walk, stole second and moved to third on
Kelly Beck's bunt single. Beck stole second to put runners on second and third.
Kate Funk delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Hall for the first run of the game.
Things looked good for the Blue Devils, even when they didn't look so good.
Ashley Jacobson struck out swinging, but reached first on the dropped strike when the first baseman could not handle ball, allowing Beck to score. Jacobson moved on a passed ball and
Hannah Timm came in a pinch runner. Following a strike out, Timm stole second then came home on
Kayli Pfeffer's single to left field to complete the three run inning.Â
Following a scoreless second inning by the Gusties,
Katelyn Belleau cracked a one-out single, then stole second. Hall ripped a triple to score Belleau, then came home on Beck's single to left field. A pitching change resulted in a strikeout, but Beck moved to second on a wild pitch and came home on Jacobson's double and give the Blue Devils a 6-0 lead.Â
Stout's fortunes started to change in the third inning when Gustavus scored three runs on three hits to cut the lead in half, 6-3, but left the bases loaded. Stout was held scoreless in the third and Gustavus erupted for five runs on three hits in the fourth inning for an 8-6 lead. The Gusties added one more run in the sixth. Â
The Blue Devils loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but could not get any runners home.
Stout recorded 10 hits to nine for Gustavus. Beck, Pfeffer and
Kaylee Peterson were all 2 for 3. Stout recored five stolen bases. The Gusties had three batters with two hits - Madelyn Mueller, Kayla Herda and Kaylyn Leonard - with Herda driving in three runs.
In 7 a.m. red-eye game, the Blue Devils were handcuffed by pitcher Kayla Senne, who threw a five inning no-hitter. Senne fanned nine and allowed two walks.
Stout got their only run in the top of the first when Hall drew a lead off walk. Hall advanced on
Alyssa Albrecht's sacrifice bunt and got all the way to third, coming home on
Shannon Jones' groundout to shortstop.Â
The Vikings took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second, added single runs in the third and fourth innings and ended the game early with a five-run fifth inning.
Stout is off until they travel to the Orlando, Fla., area to play 10 games in Clermont, Fla., at the PFX Athletics College Spring Games. Stout opens Sunday, March 13 by playing North Park University and Endicott College.
