Raegan Sorensen was selected as the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) women's basketball newcomer of the year and was an All-WIAC honorable mention selection along with teammates
Amanda Giesen and
Anna Mutch.
Sorensen, a freshman from Balsam Lake, burst onto the scene in December during non-conference play when she scored 25 points against Bethany Lutheran College and threatened the school record with a 36 point effort against Aurora College. The 36 points was the most by a WIAC player this season. Sorensen, who came off the bench this year in all 24 games, continued strong play during the conference season, seven times scoring in double digits. Sorensen scored 25 points against UW-Eau Claire, Jan. 12, then scored 19 points against the Blugolds Feb. 9. In conference games only, Sorensen averaged 12.0 points per game, ranking 10th in the league, averaged 4.9 rebounds (10th), shot .469 from the floor (eighth) and 2.2 steals (second). Sorensen hit back-to-back game winners as time expired against UW-Stevens Point (63-61) and UW-Platteville (69-67).
Overall, Sorensen averaged 12.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, shot .469 and 2.2 steals. Sorensen recorded four double-doubles this season, twice in conference play when she scored 19 points and 11 rebounds at UW-Stevens Point, Feb. 2 and 19 points and 10 rebounds against UW-Eau Claire, Feb. 9. Sorensen twice earned WIAC Athlete of the Week honors.
Mutch, a sophomore from Apple Valley, Minn., last season's newcomer of the year, averaged 11.2 points per game, was fifth in the conference in rebounds at 6.0 per game and was second in the league in assists, averaging 3.1 per game. Mutch scored in double figures in 13 games and scored 17 points in a single game twice for her career highs. Mutch scored in every game and had at least one assist in 23 of 24 games. Twice she had seven assists - against Bethel University, Nov. 13, and against UW-La Crosse, Jan. 5.
Giesen, a sophomore from New Prague, Minn., was the epitome of consistency, scoring more than 10 points in 20 of 24 games. Giesen scored a career-high 18 points in a win over UW-Oshkosh and finished the year averaging a team-best 12.4 points. Giesen averaged a team-best 29.9 minutes per game, pulled down 4.8 rebounds and shot .493 from the field, second in the league. Giesen twice came within one rebound of recording double-doubles, against UW-Whitewater, Dec. 4 with 12 points and nine rebounds and against UW-La Crosse, Feb. 16, when she matched a career-high 18 points and nine rebounds.
Sorensen, Giesen and Mutch were all regulars at the free throw line, with each ranking among the top six in the league. Sorensen was 88 of 119 from the line, Giesen 73 of 109 and Mutch 72 of 100. The trio accounted for 233 of Stout's 345 made free throws, going a combined 233 of 328.
Senior
Lizzy Olsem (St. Charles, Ill./North) was selected to the all-sportsmanship team. Olsem averaged 8.2 points and 3.5 rebounds this season.
