THIS WEEK'S GAMES: UW-Stout (7-13-0, 5-6-0 WIAC) will play a weekend series at UW-Stevens Point (13-5-1, 7-2-0 WIAC), Feb. 4-5. The Pointers defeated Stout, 6-3, in November. Point is currently ranked 11th in the latest Top 15 poll from USCHO.com

A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS:

  • Dylan Rallis jumps to the top of the scoring list after his two-goal outing against Northland College two weeks ago, Rallis also added an assist to his season stats this past weekend agains Eau Claire. Rallis now has 15 points (eight goals and seven assists). Last year's leading scorer and team captain Raphael Gosselin is right behind Rallis with 13 points (six goals and seven assists). Gosselin was the WIAC/Kwik Trip Athlete of the Week after scoring a goal and providing an assist on the game-winning goal in a 3-2 overtime win over Bethel University. In the first 12 games of the season, Gosselin scored two goals and two assists and in the last four games he has scored four goals and three assists. Gosselin has a team-high three power play goals. 
  • Freshman Caleb Serre, Logan Nelson and Peyton Hart are all tied with 12 points. Serre leads Stout with 11 assists and scored his first collegiate goal against St. Olaf College. Nelson has four goals and eight assists will Hart has seven goals and five assists.
  • Matt Dalhseide is next with three goals and seven assists. Alec Skar scored his first goal of the season, the game winner against Bethel University, and now has three goals to go along with four assists. Riley Enderle has scored four goals and Kobe Keller has dished off five assists. Cole Beckstead also has three goals on the season.
  • Alex Nagel, Joey Petronack, Nick Bowlin, Alex Nagel, Matt Flodell, and Landon Lushanko have each added two goals.
  • Stout has five goalies this season and freshman Tyler Masternak has snared four of Stout's seven wins. The freshman is posting a GAA of 3.28 with a saves percentage of .902. Zack Cloutier has picked up the other three wins, and has recorded a GAA of 3.18 and a saves percentage of .913. Brennan Kitchen has a GAA of 3.84 with a saves percentage of .868. Masternak and Cloutier each have been credited with an assist on a goal this year.
  • The Blue Devils finished the abbreviated 2020-21 season at 4-7 overall. The Blue Devils averaged 2.75 goals per game and gave up 3.6 goals. Stout is 6-29 (20.9 percent) on the power play and 7-27 (74.1) on the penalty kill. 
  • The Blue Devils return their top seven scorers and nine of their top 10 scorers from last season. 
  • Raphael Gosselin returns as the team's leading scorer from last season, leads the team in points, posting four goals and seven assists for 11 points.
  • Kobe Keller led Stout in goals scored with five, of which two were power play goals, and added a pair of assists. Logan Nelson, a three-time all-WIAC honorable mention pick, returns after scoring four goals and three assists. Matt Dahlseide and Peter Verstegan each scored two goals and four assists. Defenseman Joey Petronack had a goal and five assists as a freshman, earning honorable mention honors. Alex Nagel was just behind Gosselin in assists, dishing off six. Alex Stuckert had a goal and three assists, while Brandon Connett had two goals, both power play goals, and an assist during his freshman season.
  • Twenty different players scored at least one point last season.
  • The Blue Devils return two all-conference goalies in Brennan Kitchen and Zack Cloutier. Kitchen earned honorable mention honors in 2019-20 and Cloutier earned first team honors last season when he set a single season record for goals against average (GAA) with a 1.63 mark. Tyler Masternak joins the Blue Devils' goalie crew that also includes returners Brady Meyers and Marco Zink.
  • Stout returns five players who have earned All-WIAC honors at least once throughout their career. Senior forward Logan Nelson has been selected WIAC honorable mention all three years. Junior goalie Brennan Kitchen was a honorable mention pick in 2019-20. Senior forward Raphael Gosselin earned first team honors last season, as did sophomore goalie Zach Cloutier. Sophomore defenseman Joey Petronack was an honorable mention selection last spring.
  • The Blue Devils have six seniors, eight juniors, eight sophomores and 11 freshmen on their 2021-22 roster.
 


BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT

  • The Blue Devils lost two close games to UW-Eau Claire, falling 4-1, Jan. 28, in a game closer than the score, and 2-1 in overtime, Jan. 29.  
  • UW-Stout scored the first goal of the game, but UW-Eau Claire scored the next four, taking a 4-1 win over the Blue Devils Friday at the Fanetti Community Center. Matt Dahlseide scored at 9:45 of the first on the power play, but Eau Claire's Jarrad Vroman scored three minutes later. The Blugolds took the lead on Ty Readman's power play goal at 2:43 of the second period. Eau Claire added two empty net goals.   • Ty Readman scored at 1:47 in overtime to lift UW-Eau Claire over UW-Stout, 2-1, to complete the weekend sweep Saturday at the Fanetti Community Center. The two rivals scored the only goals in regulation in the first period. Eau Claire got on the board first when Colin Stein scored at 15:15 of the first period and Stout's Peyton Hart scored at 18:39 to knot the score. Ryan Ouelette earned the win, making 19 saves. SCOUTING UW-STEVENS POINT

  • Stevens Point is currently ranked 11th in the latest Top 15 poll from USCHO.com. They rank 24th in the nation at putting the puck in the net, with an average of 3.68 goals per game. The goal scoring has been spread out for the Pointers. Jordan Faber has seven goals and 10 assists for 17 points. Brandon McReynolds has seven goasl and two assists Fletcher Anderson and Conor Witherspoon each have six goals. Carter Roo, Noah Finstrom and Jake Theis each have five goals, with Roo adding 10 assists, Finstrom eight assists and Theis two assists. Cody Moline has four goals. The Pointers scored a season-high eight goals against UW-Superior Wednesday. 
  • Playing a majority of the time in net, Ryan Wagner (11-3-0) has recorded a GAA of 1.86, which places him 10th in the nation in this category. Wagner also has a save percentage of .921. Eli Billing backs up Wagner, and has picked up two wins and a tie in his five appearances. Billing has a GAA of 2.95 and a save percentage of .904.

THE POINTERS LAST TIME OUT
  • The Pointers games with UW-Superior scheduled for last week were postponed to Wednesday, Feb. 2 and Wednesday, Feb. 9.  
  • Stevens Point scored eight goals for the first time since February 2020 in an 8-3 win over UW-Superior in non-conference action Feb. 2. UWSP needed just 14 seconds to put the first goal int eh back of the net. Brady Smith supplied the early tally off an assist from Fletcher Anderson. Later in the first, Tyler German scored off a feed from Conor Witherspoon at the 16:35 mark. At the 2:35 mark of the second, Brandon McReynolds tickled the twine for the first time on the night with a power-play tally.  Jordan Fader  picked up his first of three points with an assist. Less than two minutes later, Fader netter a shorthanded goal with Wilson Northey picking up an assist. The Yellowjackets broke the shutout at 13:15 of the second period, but 18 seconds later Connor Scahill made it 5-1.  Noah Finstrom recorded an assist on the play. Just over a minute later, Fader scored his second of the period with Andrew Poulias getting an assist. In the final minute of the second period, Finstrom scored to make it 7-1.  Jake Theis had an assist on the play. Following a pair of goals by the visitors, McReynolds netted his second power-play goal of the night at 14:29 of the third to complete the scoring. Poulias and Carter Roo had assists.   •  The last time they played, Stevens Point took back sole possession of first place in the WIAC after a 4-1 win at UW-River Falls Jan. 22. Fletcher Anderson opened the second with his second goal of the weekend.  His goal at 18:32 was assisted by Nicholas Aromatario. Anderson scored again at the 6:47 mark of the second period. had an assist on the eventual game-winner. The Falcons cut the Pointers' lead in half with a shorthanded goal at 14:41 of the second. At 12:04 of the third period, Brady Smith put the Pointers back in front by two.  Roo recorded his second helper of the game. Wilson Northey capped the scoring with a goal at 18:29 of the third with Aromatario getting his second assist of the night. Ryan Wagner made 19 saves for his 10th win of the year.  UWRF goaltender Dysen Skinner had 22 saves. | Game Story and Stats


WHEN STOUT AND STEVENS POINT LAST MET

  • In the first home WIAC game for the Blue Devils, the Pointers of Stevens Point pounded Stout's Tyler Masternak with 38 shots and never trailed in the game as the Pointers beat UW-Stout by a score of 6-3. The loss is Stout's first in WIAC play. Stevens Point's Ryan Wagner finished the game with 15 saves. Stout's Tyler Masternak finished the game with 32 saves.  |  Game Story and Statistics

  • Stevens Point leads the series overall and 43-22 since Stout returned to varsity status for the 1996-97 season. The Pointers have won 14 of the last 15 meetings, with Stout's last win over Stevens Point coming last year with a 4-1 home win, Feb. 24, 2021. | History

  • 2020-21: Goalie Zack Cloutier was selected as the Kwik Trip/WIAC Athlete of the Week and The Heights/UW-Stout Athlete of the Week. 
  • 2019-20: Goalie Brennan Kitchen, defenseman Connor Chambers and forward Logan Nelson earned WIAC honorable mention honors. Lucas Carroll was selected to the all-sportsmanship team...Brennan Kitchen was selected as the WIAC hockey athlete of the week after stopping 55 shots in a 4-0 shutout over Northland College, Jan. 25. On the weekend, Kitchen had 88 total saves...After scoring three goals and an assist over the weekend against Bethel University and Hamline University, Konnar Dechaine was selected as the UW-Stout athlete of the week, Jan. 13…After scoring two goals each night in a loss to UW-Stevens Point and a win over UW-Superior, Logan Nelson was selected as the WIAC Athlete of the Week.



UW-STOUT COACH MIKE MACDONALD

  • The 2021-22 season marks Mike MacDonald's (11-20-0) second season as the Blue Devils' head coach. 
  • Before coming to Stout, MacDonald coached four seasons at Curry College, near Boston, Mass. Prior to joining Curry, he spent a year as an assistant coach at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston. 
  • MacDonald graduated from the SUNY Geneseo with a degree in Business Administration in 2007. During his time at Geneseo, the team posted a record of 67-33-11, winning the SUNYAC Championship in 2005 and 2006. Over his collegiate career, MacDonald appeared in 109 games and is among the school's all-time leaders in goals (61) and points (120).
  • MacDonald played six seasons professionally. He began his professional career in the Central Hockey League, spending one season each with the Odessa Jackalopes and New Mexico Scorpions. The following four seasons he played primarily for the Southern Professional Hockey League's Huntsville Havoc. While there he served as the team's captain for three seasons. In 2010 he scored the game-winning goal to give Huntsville its first ever SPHL Championship. Over his career, MacDonald appeared in 338 professional games with 213 points on 84 goals and 129 assists.
  • MacDonald is a native of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia.

UW-STEVENS POINT COACH TYLER KRUEGER
  • Tyler Krueger enters his fifth year as the head coach of the UWSP men's hockey program in 2021-22.  With Krueger at the helm, the Pointers have won the WIAC regular season title three times.  He holds a career record of 88-22-10.
  • In the 2020-21 season, Krueger guided his Pointers to the seventh-straight WIAC Championship game.  His team was led by WIAC Player of the Year Zach Zech, one of four All-WIAC picks in 2021.
  • In 2018-19, he guided the Pointers to the first unbeaten season in Division III history and the sixth national championship in program history. Krueger was honored with the Edward Jeremiah Award as National Coach of the Year by the American Hockey Coaches Association  and the USCHO.com National Coach of the Year.
  • His 2018-19 Pointers set a program record with a 31-game unbeaten streak, had the highest winning percentage (.968) and allowed the fewest goals (46). He guided sophomore goaltender Connor Ryckman to the WIAC Player of the Year honor, one of two AHCA/CCM All-Americans (Tanner Karty).  His Pointers went 8-0-0 in WIAC play and won the WIAC Tournament for the third time in the last four seasons.  
  • He was hired as permanent head coach on May 31, 2018.  He served as interim head coach for the 2017-18 season and led the Pointers to the Frozen Four. UWSP won the regular season WIAC title with an undefeated 6-0-2 record and he led the Pointers to an NCAA Tournament road win at Adrian in the second round to advance to Lake Placid.
  • Under Krueger's tutelage, junior Tanner Karty earned WIAC Player of the Year honors and finished as the national leader in game-winning goals.  Karty and goaltender Max Milosek earned ACHA/CCM All-American honors in 2018 under Krueger.
  

THE CONFERENCE:

  • UW-Stout is a member of the six-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The WIAC is made up of Stout, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Superior and UW-River Falls. Northland College joined the league last season. UW-Eau Claire was picked to win the league title, according to a preseason poll conducted by conference coaches and sports information directors. UW-Stevens Point was chosen second, UW-River Falls third, UW-Superior fourth, UW-Stout fifth and Northland sixth.

LENDING AN ASSIST: In the 2021-22 season, goalie Zack Cloutier dished an assist Oct. 30, 2021 against Concordia-Wis...Tyler Masternak recorded his first collegiate assist against Bethel University, Jan. 7, 2022...Goalie Zack Cloutier chalked up an assists against Concordia University-Wisconsin, Oct. 30, 2021...Goalie Evan Bisek recorded an assist against Marian University, Nov. 2, 2019...Two different Stout goalies earned assists during the 2015-16 season. Spencer Viele was awarded an assist Nov. 6 against Bethel University, then added a second assist Jan. 29 at UW-Superior and Chase Hollander earned an assist Nov. 21, 2015, against Concordia. The three helpers mark the first time two UW-Stout goalies have gotten an assist in the same year since the team returned to varsity status 20 years ago...When Spencer Viele was awarded an assist against Bethel University, Nov. 6, 2015, he was not the first Stout goalie, and won't be the last, to get an assist. Since the Blue Devil hockey program returned to varsity play during the 1996-97 season, seven goalies have earned at least one assist. Chase Hollander was awarded an assist for his pass as Danny Ray scored against UW-Superior, Jan. 17, 2015. Corey Koop did it during the 2013-14 season, Jeff Stone during the 2008-09 season, and Jake Schuman during the 2004-05 season each recorded an assist. STOUT'S RANKED HISTORY: The Blue Devils were last mentioned in the USCHO.com poll Nov. 19, 2018 and received a single vote in the Dec. 3 rankings before dropping out...the last time the Blue Devils were mentioned was with one vote in the Oct. 31, 2016 poll...The last time Stout was mentioned was Jan. 18, 2016...The Blue Devils returned to the USCHO.com Division III poll, Jan. 18, 2016, after nearly a four year hiatus, receiving five votes. A tie and two straight losses the following week dropped the Blue Devils out of the poll. Stout finished the 2008-09 season as the second ranked team in the USCHO.com poll. With the exception of the Nov. 17, 2008, USCHO.com poll, Stout had been ranked in the top 15 since the Nov. 13, 2006, poll. Stout made their first appearance in the poll on Nov. 27, 2000, when they received one vote, then moved up to 10th the following week. The 2008-09 season ending poll matched Stout's previous high mark of second in the Jan. 29, 2007, poll. Stout opened the 2009-10 season ranked third, their highest-ever season-opening ranking, but fell out of the polls midway through the season and returned to the top 15, Nov. 22, 2010. Stout was in the 2011-12 USCHO.com poll early in the season, dropped out, returned again, but dropped out. Stout returned to the poll after a win over top-ranked St. Norbert, Jan. 18, 2012, garnering eight votes in the Jan. 21, 2012, poll, effectively ranking the Blue Devils 19th. HOME ICE: The Dunn County Board in 2015 approved renaming the Dunn County Ice Arena the Fanetti Community Center in recognition of Marilyn Fanetti's contribution to fundraising efforts undertaken by the Menomonie Youth Hockey Association to remodel and add to the arena at the Dunn County Recreation Park. Fanetti donated $370,000 to the project and asked that the hockey arena and new community room be named for her family.

UP NEXT:  The Blue Devils will close out the regular season with three games, traveling to Hamline University, Wednesday, Feb. 9 for a 4 p.m. matinee with the Pipers in a make-up game from early January. Stout will close the conference season with two games with UW-Superior, traveling to Superior, Friday, Feb. 11 and then closing out the regular season at home against the Yellowjackets Saturday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. The Blue Devils will recognize seniors Alex Nagel, Logan Nelson, Brady Meyers, Alec Skar, Raphael Gosselin and Tomi Varjonen
