MENOMONIE (December 3, 2021) - In the first home WIAC game for the Blue Devils, the Pointers of Stevens Point pounded Stout's
Tyler Masternak with 38 shots. Stevens Point never was trailing in the game as the Pointers beat UW-Stout (2-7-0, 2-1-0) by a score of 6-3. The loss is Stout's first in WIAC play.
In the first period, UW-Stevens Point (7-3-1, 2-1-0) got on the board first on a breakaway goal. Just under 2 minutes in the game, Pointer's Noah Finstrom beat Masternak on a breakaway deke to make the game 1-0. Brett Humberstone and David Hill assisted on the goal.
Stevens Point scored another goal at the 9:46 mark of the first period. Harrison Stewart scored a rebound goal to give the Pointers a 2-0 lead. Assists came from Nicholas Aromatario and Carter Roo.
With 6:15 left in the period, Stout went on the first power play of the game. At 14:22 of the period,
Raphael Gosselin found
Logan Nelson in front of the net and Nelson beat Wagner to score a power play goal.
Caleb Serre also assisted on the goal to make the game 2-1.
But the Pointers answered back with 1:03 left in the period as Tyler German scored a goal to make it a two score game again.
At the end of the first period, Stevens Point led in shots, 18-5.
In the second period, the Blue Devils got back within one goal at 5:38 in the period. The Stout goal was scored by
Peyton Hart with an assist from
Caleb Serre.
With 8:15 left in the period, Stout committed their first penalty and the Pointers went on a power play. But the Blue Devils killed off the penalty. With 5:46 left in the period, Stout also went on a power play. The Blue Devils had a few chances to score, but the Pointers killed off the penalty and no goals were scored by both teams on the power play.
At the second intermission, shots were in favor of Stevens Point 28-14.
In the third period, Stevens Point's David Hill beat Masternak to make the game 4-2. The goal was assisted by Jordan Fader and Brett Humberstone.
With 14:22 left in the game, Stout had a chance on the power play. With 27 seconds left in the power play, the Pointers took another penalty to make it a 5 on 3, but the first penalty was killed. During the second penalty, Stevens Point's David Hill scored on a breakaway goal and also made it a shorthanded goal. The score saw the Pointers up 5-2.
With just under 5 minutes left to play, Stout scored on a shot from the point by
Alex Stuckert to be back within two goals.
Peter Verstegen got the lone assist on the goal.
Time was running out for Stout as they pulled Masternak to skate six on five with 3:35 left in the game. The Blue Devils had chances to score, including hitting two pipes within the first 20 seconds, but couldn't find the back of the net. With 59 seconds left in the game, Conor Witherspoon scored the empty net goal to make the final score of 6-3 in favor of the Pointers.
Stevens Point's Ryan Wagner finished the game with 15 saves. Stout's
Tyler Masternak finished the game with 32 saves.
