Final Results
PLATTEVILLE (February 26, 2022) – UW-Stout's
Mason Barth was in fifth place after the first day of the heptathlon but set personal bests in the final five events to the win the two-day event at the 2022 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Track and Field Championship (presented by Culver's) at UW-Platteville.
But Barth scored personal bests in the final five events – the shot put, the high jump, the 60-hurdles, the pole vault and the 1000-meter run - to win the heptathlon with a personal-best overall score of 4901.
Barth started his charge on the first day when he set a personal mark in the shot put (33-feet, 11.75-inches) to finish seventh of the 16 heptathlon athletes. Barth continued on the first day in finishing first in the heptathlon high jump with a mark of 6-1.50.
On Day Two, Barth finished second in the 60-hurdles with a time of 8.57 seconds and had an eight-inch advantage in the pole vault with a height of 14-10.75. Barth held off any challengers with a fourth-place finish in the 1000 (2:51.57) to take the crown, winning by 26 points over second-place challenger Jacob Rice of host Platteville. Barth is the fourth Blue Devil to win the heptathlon, joining Daniel Drewek (2012), Zach Anderson (2013) and Ethen Schoen (2016).
Brandon Dick was also on the championship podium, finishing eighth in the heptathlon with 4200 points.
Hayden Zachgo was 15th (2958).
Jacob Bugella was second in the weight throw (59-10).
Connor Walechka joined Bugella on the victory stand, finishing eighth (56-5).
Kevin Ruechel was ninth (56-2),
Nate Karau was 16th (49-1), Anthony Kuehl was 22nd (45-7) and
John Nicpon was 25th (42-0).
Grant Magnuson took fifth in the 800-meter run in a time of 1:56.55.
Lance Pfrimmer was 19th (2:00.20).
Spencer Schultz was sixth in the 3000-meter (8:29.79),
Matthew Ryan ninth (8:31.90),
Cale Bishop 19th (9:56.60),
Ian Williams 20th (9:57.78),
Nels Trandahl 24th (9:01.43) and
Trevor Locke 26th (9:03.39).
The 4x400-meter relay team of
Owen Jelinek,
Keegan Pulchinski,
Grant Magnuson and
Caleb Green were fifth (3:24.67).
Daniel Nesja was sixth in the triple jump with a measurement of 46-0,
Jack Roeber was ninth (44-6.75),
Simon Lual 12th (43-5.75),
Jakes Asembo 13th (43-3.75), Frank Ochtrup-Dekeyrel 22nd (40-2.25), and
Jonathan Loera 24th (38-11.75).
In the 200-meter,
Brent Heilman was 12th (22.51),
Hayden Wagner was 18th (23.08),
Caleb Green 22nd (23.19) and
Carter Wente 24th (23.40).
As a team, the Blue Devils finished sixth overall.
Bobby Vang was named to the all-sportsmanship team.
The Blue Devils will be at the Wartburg College Last Chance Meet, Saturday, March 5. The NCAA Division III Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships are March 11-12 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
