Football Preview: Blue Devils Travel to River Falls in Season Finale

THIS WEEK'S GAME: Stout will look to end the season on a winning note when they travel to River Falls to face 24th ranked Falcons.

2022 Schedule: In the D3 Top 25 polls, UW-River Falls (24th), are all on the schedule for the Blue Devils. Previous opponents include UW-Whitewater (10th), UW-Oshkosh (votes receiving), UW-La Crosse (7th), Wartburg (16th), and Gustavus Aldophus, who started the season in the votes receiving category, but has since fallen out. The only teams that Stout faces that did not appear on the poll are: Crown College (Sept. 24), UW-Eau Claire (Oct. 1), UW-Stevens Point (Oct. 15).  UW-Platteville recently moved up to 22nd with their win over UW-Whitewater, but fell out after losing to the Blue Devils.

LAST TIME OUT: UW-STOUT: On a wet and cloudy day at Don & Nona Williams Stadium, the Warhawks of Whitewater rushed for 253 yards to down the Blue Devils 16-7. In the air, Blue Devil's Sean Borgerding finished the game with 229 yards and one touchdown. Whitewater's Evan Lewandowski finished the game with 130 yards and one touchdown. Lewandowski also had 67 rushing yards. On the ground, Stout's Arthur Cox led the charge with 29 yards rushing. Cox also had eight catches for 74 yards, leading the team in receiving. Whitewater's Tamir Thomas finished the game with 85 rushing yards and Jaylon Edmonson ended with 83 yards. Blue Devil's Levy Hamer finished the game with 54 receiving yards including nine catches and one touchdown. Parker Fossum also had 43 yards receiving. Warhawk's Tyler Holte led the team in receiving with 42 yards. Tommy Coates also had 40 receiving yards with one touchdown. On defense, Blue Devil's Cannon Griner finished the game with 15 total tackles. Nathan Williamson and Scott Gustafson finished the game with nine total tackles.

LAST TIME OUT: UW-RIVER FALLS. The No. 23-ranked UW-River Falls football team fell by a score of 24-17 at No. 7-ranked UW-La Crosse Saturday afternoon. While the Falcons led 350-314 in total offense, La Crosse held River Falls to under 100 yards of rushing and forced four Falcon turnovers.

WHEN STOUT AND RIVER FALLS LAST MET: In the last home game for UW-Stout (5-4, 2-4 WIAC) the Falcons of River Falls scored 57 points to en route the Blue Devils 57-35. Leading in air yards for the Blue Devils was Sean Borgerding as he had 358 yards passing including 5 touchdowns. Kole Hinrichsen for the Falcons led with 175 yards passing including three touchdowns. On the ground, Blue Devil's Matt Pomietlo finished with 39 rushing yards. Falcon's Luke Fugate led the rushing attack in the game with 247 yards including three touchdowns. Stout's Arthur Cox led the receivers with 116 yards with one touchdown. Levy Hamer finished with 74 yards, Tyler Seymour had 64 yards, and Parker Fossum finished with 55 yards. 

THE SERIES: River Falls holds the all time series 71-36. The last 10 meet-ups have been split on 5-5.

A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS: Stout fell out of the vote receiving category after a loss to #7 UW-Whitewater, collecting 13 votes in the D3Football polls last week, but none this week. The Stout offensive is still putting up impressive numbers, averaging 421.0 yards per game (246.0 passing, 175.0 rushing) and scoring 32.0 points per game. The defense is holding teams to only 356.1 yards per game (207.3 passing, 148.8 rushing) and has taken the ball away 14 times.

THE PASSING GAME: Sean Borgerding leads the team at QB1 with 183 completions with 2121 yards and 17 touchdowns. Borgerding leads the WIAC in completions and is second in total yards. On the receiving end of those passes has been Levy Hamer, Arthur Cox, Parker Fossum, and Will Knutson. Hamer leads the corps with 672 yards and seven touchdowns on 47 receptions. Hamer is second in the WIAC with total receiving yards and tied for first with receiving touchdowns. Cox has 426 yards and four touchdowns on 50 receptions. Fossum has three touchdowns with 437 yards and Knutson has 184 yards. Others catching TD passes are Ben Tolkein, Caleb Timm, and Bradley Sarauer. Cox has been a triple threat, recording four receiving TDs, one rushing TD, and one kick off return TD. 

THE RUNNING GAME: Carter Fonger is leading the team in yards gained, despite having one of the fewest carries. Fonger has taken the ball 250 yards and has reached the end zone five times in only 18 carries. Fonger is averaging 13.9 yards a carry. Three of Fonger's five touchdowns have been from over 50 yards out (51, 55, 67). QB2 Mitch Waetcher is averaging 14.5 yards per carry, recording 160 yards in 11 carries. Waetcher has also ran for two touchdowns. The triple threat Arthur Cox has 223 yards rushing in 33 carries. Ben Tolkinen and Chase Hughes have 212 yards and 219 yards in 38 and 50 caries respectively. Chase Hughes has made it to the end zone four times and Tolkinen plus JD Bates have made it twice. Jacob Kopacz and Josh Schlangen have all made it to the end zone once.

TOTAL OFFENSE: Stout has recorded 3789 total yards, throwing for 2214 yards and rushing for 1575 yards.

DEFENSE: Cannon Griner and Gervase Thompson lead Stout in tackles, recording 84.0 and 51.0 respectively. Griner also has an interception and a forced fumble, both against Gustavus Adolphus earlier in the season. Griner is second in the WIAC with his 84.0 tackles. Thompson has recorded 4.0 tackles for a loss including 3 sacks for a total loss of 42 yards. Mack Klafter has made 4.5 tackles for a loss including a sack. Nick Arguedas and Scott Gustafson each have 48.0 tackles with Mack Klafter not far behind with 46.0. Gustafson, Wyatt Beyerl, Quinton Williams, Noah Jungwrith, and Nick Mohs each have recorded two sacks. Q. Williams (2), Nick Arguedas, Dylan Larrabee, and Nathan Williamson have recorded a fumble recovery. Williamson also recorded a blocked field goal. Carter Johnson and Mason Priebe have picked the ball off twice, along with five other Blue Devils who have also recorded an interception.

THE KICKING GAME: Luck Cool has made 33 of 36 extra point attempts and even when he had a PAT blocked, Cool scooped up the ball and ran it in for a two-point conversion against UW-Eau Claire. Cool was 2 for 3 in extra points against Gustavus Adolphus, 9 for 9 against Crown, 8 for 10 against UW-Eau Claire, and 7 for 7 against UW-Stevens Point. It is safe to say Cool is one of very few Blue Devil kickers - possibly the only Stout kicker - to ever run for a 2-point conversion. Looking back through 1996, no Stout kicker has run for a 2-point conversion. College football instituted the 2-point conversion in 1958. Cool also broke the single-game field record, making five field goals against UW-Platteville on October 29, 2022. Cool is also rapidly approaching the single season PAT record. Cool has made 33 PATs, the record is held by Nolan Mosher with 37 in 1997. Cool also has made in

CLIMBING THE LADDER: With his 239 yard passing game against UW-Oshkosh, QB Sean Borgerding passed Tim Peterson at the top of the all-time passing yards. Peterson had 8881 yards in his time from 1986-89. Borgerding now has 9534 yards at the top of the leaderboard. Borgerding, a three-time WIAC honorable mention selection, has completed 724 of 1263 passes with 84 touchdowns. His 84 touchdowns only trail Bunyan, who had 85 in his time as a Blue Devil.

Borgerding will need two more touchdown throws to pass the all-time passing touchdowns.

On a 23-yard touchdown pass against UW-Platteville, Levy Hamer broke the career-receiving yards record. Hamer, now with 3485 yards in 225 receptions, passed Scott Frederickson's (1986-89) record of 3390. Hamer also did it in 17 less receptions (216 receptions when he broke the record), compared to Frederickson's 233. Hamer currently holds the record for most career receiving touchdowns with 33, ahead of Frederickson with 26. Hamer is currently tied for third with Drew Pearson on the all-time scoring list with 202 points, . Running back Luke Bundgaard (2000-03) is the all-time scoring leader with 240 points. Hamer led the WIAC in receiving yards per game last year, averaging 96.2 yards over 10 games.

Averaging 30.3 yards per kick off return, Arthur Cox needs one more return to qualify for the single-season record for kick return average.

PRESEASON POLLS: The Blue Devils finished sixth in the competitive WIAC in 2021 and according to a preseason poll by WIAC football coaches and sports information directors, the Blue Devils are picked to finish sixth in 2022. UW-Whitewater is picked to finish first, UW-La Crosse second, UW-River Falls third, UW-Oshkosh fourth, UW-Platteville fifth, UW-Stout sixth, UW-Eau Claire seventh and UW-Stevens Point eighth.

WHO'S WHO: UW-RIVER FALLS:   The Falcons offense premiers one of the best dual-threat QBs in the WIAC. Kaleb Blaha has thrown for 1960 yards on 169 for 287 passing with 18 passing touchdowns and eight interceptions. Blaha also leads the team in rushing with 830 total yards and 11 rushing touchdowns. Those 11 rushing touchdowns are the most in the WIAC. On the receiving end of Blaha's passes have been Mason Van Zeeland and Luke Kush. Van Zeeland has 585 yards and seven touchdowns and Kush has 491 yards and six touchdowns. Aaron Borgerding, Stout QB Sean's brother, leads the team with 79.0 tackles. Caleb Johnson and Andrew Schumacher are behind him with 46 and 44 tackles respectively. Michael Brown has seven interceptions, a WIAC best. Drew Hahn is the one pressuring the QB in the backfield, recording 4.0 sacks. Hahn also has his own interception. As a team, the Falcons are averaging a WIAC-best 486.6 yards per game (275.11 passing, 211.4 rushing). River Fall's defense is allowing 273.3 yard per game.

NATIONAL RANKINGS: Stout is back in the receiving votes category with 13 votes. Stout have been bouncing around the votes receiving category, receiving at most 13 and at least one. Last season, Stout fell out of the rankings after consecutive losses to 20th ranked UW-Oshkosh and UW-River Falls. Stout was in the 2021 D3football.com receiving votes category from Week 3 to Week 8. 

The Blue Devils returned to the national rankings during the 2017 season after an upset win of fourth ranked St. Thomas. were first mentioned in the 2017 AFCA Football Coaches Top 25 poll, Sept. 24 and again Oct. 1, but fell out after a six point overtime loss to UW-La Crosse...When Stout was voted 25th in the 2017 Week 2 Top 25 poll, it was the first time Stout was ranked in the Top 25 since Week 5 of the 2005 season when the Blue Devils were ranked 23rd. During 2017, Stout climbed as high as 22nd in the D3football.com poll in week four, but fell out of the Top 25 after consecutive losses to UW-Platteville and UW-Whitewater. The Blue Devils reappeared in the receiving votes category during the Week 7 poll. The last time Stout received votes in the D3football.com poll was during the 2010 season. Stout often received votes during the 2000s. The Blue Devils appeared in the AFCA Coaches poll during the Sept. 25 poll, ranking 25th. Stout returned to the Receiving Votes category in the AFCA poll Oct. 24. Previous to the 2017 season, the last time the Blue Devils were mentioned in the D3football.com Top 25 was when they received votes during the 2010 season.

THE COACHES: UW-Stout: Clayt Birmingham (50-67) is in his 13th season in 2022 as the UW-Stout head coach. Before coming to Stout, Birmingham coached at Western Michigan, Emporia College and UW-Stevens Point. Birmingham was the UW-Stout defensive coordinator for three years before assuming the head coaching role. Birmingham played his college football at UW-Stevens Point. (Birmingham's record coming into the 2022 season 45-63)  UW-River Falls:  Matt Walker is in his 12th season as head football coach at UW-River Falls in 2021. In 2021, he led the Falcons to a nine-win season that ties the most wins in school history. This historic season earned the Falcons a bid to the inaugural Isthmus Bowl, featuring the top non-playoff team from the WIAC and CCIW. The Isthmus Bowl was the first bowl game ever hosted in the state of Wisconsin. On November 20, Walker and River Falls made history winning the bowl contest 48-27 over Washington University (MO) while tying an NCAA record with 44 first downs in the game. The 2021 team finished the season leading the WIAC in total offense and 2nd in total defense. This fall, Walker was named the WIAC Conference Coach of The Year and Hansen Ratings National Coach of the Year.

COACHING STAFF: Head coach Clayt Birmingham works with the defensive backs. Travis Destache returns as the defensive coordinator and also works with the linebackers. Destache was named the WIAC assistant coach of the year by the WFCA in 2017. Destache is in his 16th season with the Blue Devils and 10th as defensive coordinator.  Tarek Yaeggi is in his third year as a Blue Devil assistant coach and took over as offensive coordinator with the 2022 season. Derek Branch is in his ninth season with the Blue Devils. An all-conference offensive lineman with the Blue Devils during his playing years, Branch will continue to work with the offensive line. Jake Schiff begins his seventh year with the Blue Devil coaching staff. Schiff played defensive back for the Blue Devils and was a student assistant coach in 2014 and 2015. Schiff works with the defensive line.  Jed Stutzman is in his 10th year with the Blue Devils and will again work with the running backs. Jeff Sullivan was an assistant coach with the Blue Devils from 2003-05, returning in 2016 after an 11 year hiatus from college football. During the interim, Sullivan was an assistant coach with a number of high school programs and is a member of the first class to earn their PhD at Stout. Sullivan works with the defensive line. Mark Thomas is in his 31th season on the Blue Devils' gridiron, and will work with the outside linebackers during the 2022 season. After an all-conference and all-region career as a Blue Devil punter, Clark Riedel is in his fifth year as an assistant coach and will work with the special teams.

THE LEAGUES: UW-Stout is a member of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). Stout was fifth in league play in 2019 and the Blue Devils were picked to finish fifth in a WIAC preseason poll released in late August.

SCHOLAR-ATHLETE: Quarterback Sean Borgerding has been selected as a 2022 National Football Foundation (NFF) scholar-athlete and will be a semi-finalist for the Campbell Trophy.

SEASON HONORS: 2022: Luke Cool was named to the D3 Football Team of the week after making 5 for 5 field goals in the 3OT thriller against UW-Platteville ... Kicker Luke Cool was the WIAC special teams athlete of the week after going 7-of-7 on extra-point conversions and made field goals of 19 and 26 yards against UW-Stevens Point, Oct. 16...All-purpose player Arthur Cox was named the WIAC special teams athlete of the week after returning a kickoff for a stadium record 95 yards against UW-Eau Claire, Oct. 1...Quarterback Sean Borgerding was the UW-Stout athlete of the week after matching a career-high five touchdown passes against UW-Eau Claire, Oct. 1...Kicker Luke Cool was the WIAC special teams athlete of the week and the UW-Stout athlete of the week after kicking nine extra points vs. Crown College, and Quinton Williams was the WIAC defensive athlete of the week...Wide receiver Levy Hamer was the WIAC offensive player of the week and safety Cannon Griner was the WIAC defensive player of the week after leading Stout to a 28-25 come-from-behind win over Gustavus Adolphus, Sept. 17, in St. Peter, Minn. BIG KICKOFF RETURNS: Arthur Cox's 95 yard kickoff return for a touchdown was the longest kickoff return since Noel Gonzalez returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown against UW-Stevens Point, Nov. 5, 2016 at Stevens Point. Mike Bechtel returned a 98-yard kickoff return against UW-Whitewater, Oct. 14, 1995 on the Blue Devils' homecoming. Carlos Concepcion returned a kick 90 yards for a score against UW-Eau Claire, Oct. 23, 2010. Jesse Wendt, who holds the school single season record for kickoff return average, returned a kickoff 90 yards in 2004. Tony Beckham did not have any 90-plus yard returns, but in back-to-back seasons, the future NFL draftee returned an 88-yard kickoff and an 89-yard return in 2000 and 2001, respectively. The school record for kickoff return is 102 yards for a score by Glen Harke in 1959 against Winona State.

FIELD GOAL BLOCK & RETURN: During the 2015 season, Travis Shackleton blocked a 29-yard field goal attempt by UW-La Crosse in La Crosse, Oct. 10, 2015, and Enzo Rosani scooped up the ball on the La Crosse 14, returning it 86 yards for a score. The blocked kick was Shackleton's first career block and the touchdown was Rosani's first collegiate TD. There was no mention in the UW-Stout, the WIAC or the NCAA record books for returning blocked field goal attempts. There is now a category in the Stout record book. After sending out a request to NCAA Division III sports information directors, the following list of blocked field goals was compiled.

PROMOTIONS PLANNED FOR 2022: The Blue Devils will host  Community Day Saturday, Sept. 24 when the Blue Devils play Crown College. The game is presented by Culver's. Parent's Day will be Saturday, Oct. 1 when the Blue Devils host UW-Eau Claire. Saturday, Oct. 8 when the Blue Devils host UW-La Crosse, Stout will celebrate Homecoming and the Hall of Fame inductees. The Homecoming game will be presented by Bob and Steve's BP Amoco. Heroes in Uniform Day will be Saturday, Oct. 29 when UW-Platteville comes to town, and Saturday, Nov. 5 when they Blue Devils host UW-Whitewater will be Senior Day.  The Nov. 5 game is presented by WESTconsin Credit Union. 

MAX SPARGER: UW-Stout dedicated the Don & Nona Williams Stadium press box in honor of former UW-Stout athletic director and coach Max Sparger, September 11, 2010. Sparger led the Blue Devil football team to the 1965 WSUC championship. After leaving Stout in 1972, Sparger served as the WSUC commissioner. Sparger is a member of the UW-Stout Hall of Fame, as well as the WIAC Hall of Fame.

STOUT FOOTBALL HISTORY: Stout Institute played their first game on Nov. 4, 1911, when they lost to River Falls Normal School, 13-11. Walter Anderson scored Stout's first touchdown, an 85 yard kickoff return. A week later, Stout won their first game, 30-2, against LaCrosse Business School as Harvey Tice scored four touchdowns. The predecessor to the WIAC began in 1913 and Stout has won five conference titles - 1921, 1941, 1949, 1965 and 2000. Stout became the Blue Devils during the late 1920s or early 1930s. Football was not played during the war years of 1918, 1943, and 1944, and during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Along the way, the school has gone through a number of name changes - Stout Institute, Stout State College, Stout State University and the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Stout celebrated 100 years of football with a season-long celebration and alumni reunion during the 2011 season.

TAILGATING: UW-Stout has adopted a formal tailgating policy for Blue Devil football games. The south end of the parking lot by the Don and Nona Williams Stadium has been designated as a tailgating area known as the "Tailgate Zone." Fans will be able to participate in the Blue Devil Walk. Tailgating is permitted three hours before the game, and tailgating activities will cease at game time. Only propane grills are permitted, no open flame grills. Tobacco is not permitted.

EUROPEAN FLAVOR: UW-Stout coach Clayt Birmingham has been active in raising the popularity of American football in Europe and has made several trips to Europe to participate in workshops and coaching clinics. Quentin Danès, a football coach from France, spent two weeks in the Blue Devils' 2019 training camp. During the 2018 season, the Blue Devils had a coach from Germany into preseason camp for a couple of days. Enzo Rosani began his career as a Blue Devil, joining Stout as a cornerback from France on the 2014 roster. In all likelihood, Rosani is the only international student to have played football for UW-Stout for four seasons. Rosani earned All-WIAC second team honors. For the 2019 season, Quentin Danes spent two weeks during the preseason working with the coaching staff. Danes was a teammate of Rosani on the French national team...The Blue Devils have consistently welcomed European coaches to their training camp. In 2011 it was Nico Teichert and Johannes Fiebig from Germany getting an up close look at American football. The Blue Devils also had Antti Kurenniemi, a native of Finland, on their roster in 2011. Kurenniemi saw action in several games. In 2012, the Blue Devils, for the first time in several years, did not host a European coach, but did have an international player, Jan Andre Millemann from Germany.
