Blue Devils Fall Short Against No. 4 Warhawks

MENOMONIE — The University of Wisconsin-Stout Polytechnic football team (3-3, 1-2 WIAC) fell 37-31 to No. 4 UW-Whitewater (6-0, 3-0 WIAC) Saturday at Don & Nona Williams Stadium.

The Blue Devils threw for 340 yards and three touchdowns but were hurt by five turnovers, including three interceptions and two lost fumbles.

Stout opened the game with a 12-play, 52-yard drive, but a 47-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right. Whitewater took a 7-0 lead on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Justin Klinkner to Tommy Novotny late in the first quarter.

After a Stout fumble gave the Warhawks possession, the Blue Devils' defense held Whitewater to a 25-yard field goal early in the second quarter. Stout responded with a touchdown drive of its own, as Chase Pemberton connected with Joey Tumilty for a 29-yard gain before finding Keon Maggitt for a 16-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 10-7.

Whitewater answered with a 59-yard touchdown pass and later added another 30-yard scoring pass to take a 23-7 lead. The Blue Devils closed the first half with a big defensive play, as Walker Beyerl blocked a 49-yard field goal attempt and Gavin Goodman scooped up the loose ball and returned it 59 yards for a touchdown, sending Stout into halftime trailing 23-14.

Stout wasted little time closing the gap after halftime. Davonte Evans returned the opening kickoff to midfield, and two plays later, Pemberton connected with Tumilty for a 50-yard touchdown to make it 23-21.

The Blue Devils forced a turnover on downs on Whitewater's next possession, but an interception gave the Warhawks another opportunity. Whitewater capitalized with a 30-yard touchdown run to extend its lead to 30-21.

Stout answered with an eight-play drive that ended with Garrison Jackman's career-long 46-yard field goal, pulling the Blue Devils within 30-24. Whitewater added a touchdown early in the fourth quarter after recovering a fumbled snap on a Stout punt attempt in the end zone to push its lead to 37-24.

The Blue Devils continued to battle, driving 84 yards in just over a minute. Pemberton found Evans for a 17-yard touchdown with 46 seconds remaining, cutting the deficit to 37-31. Stout attempted an onside kick, but Whitewater recovered to seal the victory.

Pemberton completed 29 of 44 passes for 340 yards and three touchdowns while adding 33 rushing yards. Tumilty led the Blue Devils with nine receptions for 147 yards and a touchdown, while Evans finished with seven catches for 89 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Braxton Munnikhuysen led Stout with 14 tackles. Brooks Brewer added 10, while Matt Blank and Beyerl recorded seven apiece.

The Blue Devils return to Don & Nona Williams Stadium next Saturday, Oct. 24, to host UW-La Crosse at 1:05 p.m.
