STEVENS POINT – It took teamwork to put together a play that will certainly go down as legendary in the record book of the University of Wisconsin-Stout Polytechnic football program.
Menomonie's
Brooks Brewer scored the touchdown on a 99-yard interception pick-6 in a 48-2 blowout win at UW-Stevens Point, Saturday, Oct. 10. But Brewer had plenty of help from his teammates and won't even receive credit for an interception on the play.
With Stout leading 31-0 on the final play of the first half,
Dawson Goodman (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) picked off the Pointers' desperation heave at the 1-yard line and raced up the sideline to midfield, where he cut across the field and lateraled to his brother
Gavin Goodman at the UWSP 46 who ran 20 yards upfield where he found
Jesse Ellis (Homewood, Ill.) at the 26 who ran the next 10 yards before finding Brewer, a senior team captain, at the 16 who carried the ball the rest of the way for the score.
The interception return sets a UW-Stout school record, topping a 95-yard effort, a mark that was set three times – Wallace Buffmire vs. Eau Claire (1921), Richard McNamara vs. Eau Claire (1951) and Luke Steffen vs. Upper Iowa (2006). The play is the second-longest play in school history, topped only by Glen Harke's 102-yard kickoff return in 1959 against Winona State.
