Football Preview: Blue Devils Host No. 10 Whitewater in Home Finale

THIS WEEK'S GAME: Stout will look to carry the momentum from their 3OT upset against #22 UW-Platteville into this weekend, where they take on #10 UW-Whitewater. 

2022 Schedule: In the D3 Top 25 polls, Whitewater (10th) and UW-River Falls (23rd), are all on the schedule for the Blue Devils. Previous opponents include UW-Oshkosh (votes receiving), UW-La Crosse (7th), Wartburg (16th), and Gustavus Aldophus, who started the season in the votes receiving category, but has since fallen out. The only teams that Stout faces that did not appear on the poll are: Crown College (Sept. 24), UW-Eau Claire (Oct. 1), UW-Stevens Point (Oct. 15).  UW-Platteville recently moved up to 22nd with their win over UW-Whitewater, but fell out after losing to the Blue Devils.

LAST TIME OUT: UW-STOUT: A one handed grab in the back of the endzone by John Smozynski, in the third overtime, sealed the win for the Blue Devils over No. 22 UW-Platteville (4-4, 3-2 WIAC) at Don & Nona Williams Stadium. The final score of the game was 24-22. Levy Hamer recorded 144 yards receiving and now holds the record for career receiving yards with 3,431.  

LAST TIME OUT: UW-WHITEWATER: The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team registered another instant classic win at Perkins Stadium Saturday, defeating UW-River Falls 30-27 on a field goal with no time remaining. The Warhawks picked up the win in front of a stellar crowd in excess of 13,000 at The Perk during the university's annual Homecoming celebration. Saturday's game was a battle of two halves, the first dominated by UWW, the second by UWRF. Still, the Warhawks found a way at the end to come out on top in epic fashion – a 49-yard field goal that hit the crossbar and bounced through the uprights with no time remaining. 

WHEN STOUT AND WHITEWATER LAST MET: The only statistic that really matters in football is the final score of the game. UW-Stout out-gained UW-Whitewater Saturday at Perkins Stadium, but the third-ranked Warhawks rolled over the Blue Devils, 37-6. Stout (3-1, 0-1 WIAC) piled up 420 yards of total offense to 358 yards for Whitewater. Stout ran 71 plays to 56 for Whitewater. The Blue Devils held a small advantage in time of possession. Blue Devil quarterback Sean Borgerding completed 28 of 44 passes to finish with 343 yards - his seventh career 300-plus passing game and Stout finished with 370 total passing yards. |  Story and Stats

THE SERIES: Whitewater holds the all time series lead 53-10-6. The Blue Devil's last win came in 2001. The Warhawks have won 19 in a row. 

A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS: With a win over #22 UW-Plattevile, Stout returns the vote receiving category, collecting 13 votes in the D3Football polls. The Stout offensive is still putting up impressive numbers, averaging 443.4 yards per game (248.1 passing, 195.3 rushing) and scoring 35.1 points per game. The defense is holding teams to only 352.8 yards per game (217.0 passing, 135.8 rushing) and has taken the ball away 13 times. 

THE PASSING GAME: Sean Borgerding leads the team at QB1 with 156 completions with 1892 yards and 16 touchdowns. On the receiving end of those passes has been Levy Hamer, Arthur Cox, Parker Fossum, and Will Knutson. Hamer leads the corps with 618 yards and six touchdowns on 38 receptions. Cox has 452 yards and four touchdowns on 42 receptions. Fossum has three touchdowns with 394 yards and Knutson has 167 yards. Others catching TD passes are Ben Tolkein, Caleb Timm, and Bradley Sarauer. Cox has been a triple threat, recording four receiving TDs, one rushing TD, and one kick off return TD. 

THE RUNNING GAME: Carter Fonger is leading the team in yards gained, despite having one of the fewest carries. Fonger has taken the ball 250 yards and has reached the end zone five times in only 18 carries. Fonger is averaging 13.9 yards a carry. Three of Fonger's five touchdowns have been from over 50 yards out (51, 55, 67). QB Mitch Waetcher is averaging 14.5 yards per carry, recording 160 yards in 11 carries. Waetcher has also ran for two touchdowns. Ben Tolkinen has 34 carries and Arthur Cox have 30 carries, Tolkinen has 205 yards and Cox has 194. Chase Hughes has made it to the end zone four times and Tolkinen have made it twice. Hughes also has 219 yards on 50 carries. Jacob Kopacz and Josh Schlangen have all made it to the end zone once.

TOTAL OFFENSE: Stout has recorded 3547 total yards, throwing for 1985 yards and rushing for 1720 yards.

DEFENSE: Cannon Griner and Gervase Thompson lead Stout in tackles, recording 69.0 and 44.0 respectively. Griner also has an interception and a forced fumble, both against Gustavus Adolphus earlier in the season. Thomson has recorded 3.0 tackles for a loss including 2 sacks for 32 yards. Mack Klafter has made 4.5 tackles for a loss including a sack. Nick Arguedas has 40.0 tackles and Scott Gustafson plus Mack Klafter each have 39.0 tackles. Gustafson, Wyatt Beyerl, Quinton Williams, Noah Jungwrith, and Nick Mohs each have recorded two sacks. Q. Williams (2), Dylan Larrabee, and Nathan Williamson have recorded a fumble recovery. Williamson also recorded a blocked field goal. Carter Johnson and Mason Priebe have picked the ball off twice, along with five other Blue Devils who have also recorded an interception.

THE KICKING GAME: Luck Cool has made 32 of 35 extra point attempts and even when he had a PAT blocked, Cool scooped up the ball and ran it in for a two-point conversion against UW-Eau Claire. Cool was 2 for 3 in extra points against Gustavus Adolphus, 9 for 9 against Crown, 8 for 10 against UW-Eau Claire, and 7 for 7 against UW-Stevens Point. It is safe to say Cool is one of very few Blue Devil kickers - possibly the only Stout kicker - to ever run for a 2-point conversion. Looking back through 1996, no Stout kicker has run for a 2-point conversion. College football instituted the 2-point conversion in 1958. Cool also broke the single-game field record, making five field goals against UW-Platteville on October 29, 2022. Cool is first for scoring in the WIAC with 61 points with nine field goals, 32 PATs, and a 2-point conversion. Cool is also rapidly approaching the single season PAT record. Cool has made 32 PATs, the record is held by Nolan Mosher with 37 in 1997.

CLIMBING THE LADDER: With his 239 yard passing game against UW-Oshkosh, QB Sean Borgerding passed Tim Peterson at the top of the all-time passing yards. Peterson had 8881 yards in his time from 1986-89. Borgerding now has 9305 yards at the top of the leaderboard. Borgerding, a three-time WIAC honorable mention selection, has completed 697 of 1223 passes with 83 touchdowns. His 83 touchdowns only trail Bunyan, who had 85 in his time as a Blue Devil. Last season, Borgerding completed 205 of 327 passes for 2872 with 29 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Only Bunyan (3230 yds, 1998/3221 yds, 1997) and Peterson (2956, 1989) have thrown more yards in a single season and only Bunyan (38 TDs, 1998/33 TDs, 1997) has thrown more touchdowns in a single season. This year Borgerding has 1892 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Borgerding will need two more touchdowns to pass the all-time passing touchdowns.

On a 23-yard touchdown pass, Levy Hamer broke the career-receiving yards record. Hamer, now with 3431 yards in 216 receptions, passed Scott Frederickson's (1986-89) record of 3390. Hamer also did it in 17 less receptions, compared to Frederickson's 233. Hamer currently holds the record for most career receiving touchdowns with 32, ahead of Frederickson with 26. Hamer is currently fourth on the all-time scoring list with 196 points, right behind Drew Pearson who has 202. Running back Luke Bundgaard (2000-03) is the all-time scoring leader with 240 points. Hamer led the WIAC in receiving yards per game last year, averaging 96.2 yards over 10 games. Hamer was fourth in the WIAC in scoring with 74 points.

PRESEASON POLLS: The Blue Devils finished sixth in the competitive WIAC in 2021 and according to a preseason poll by WIAC football coaches and sports information directors, the Blue Devils are picked to finish sixth in 2022. UW-Whitewater is picked to finish first, UW-La Crosse second, UW-River Falls third, UW-Oshkosh fourth, UW-Platteville fifth, UW-Stout sixth, UW-Eau Claire seventh and UW-Stevens Point eighth.

WHO'S WHO: UW-WHITEWATER: Evan Lewandoski is the man under center for the Warhawks. Lewandoski, who didn't play much last year behind QB Max Meylor, is throwing for 1858 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions so far in 2022. Four of his receivers have over 200 yards, including Tyler Holte (488), Steven Hein (432), Tommy Coates (381), and Sam DeLany (277). Coates and Holt have the most touchdowns with five and four respectively. On the ground, Tamir Thomas and Jaylon Edmonson have picked up the most yards. Thomas with 480 yards in 82 carries and Edmonson with 479 yards in 101 carries. Preston Strasburg has four rushing touchdowns with 113 yards in 36 carries. On the defensive end, Ryan Liszka has recorded 55.0 tackles including a team-best 7.5 tackles for a loss and 2.5 sacks, good for second on the team behind Kyle Gallagher with 4.5 sacks. Shane McGrail and Egon Hein are next on the list with 43.0 and 40.0 tackles respectively. Hein also has two interceptions and eight break-ups for the Warhawks. Kyle Koehblinger has three interceptions and five break-ups.

NATIONAL RANKINGS: Stout is back in the receiving votes category with 13 votes. Stout have been bouncing around the votes receiving category, receiving at most 13 and at least one. Last season, Stout fell out of the rankings after consecutive losses to 20th ranked UW-Oshkosh and UW-River Falls. Stout was in the 2021 D3football.com receiving votes category from Week 3 to Week 8. 

The Blue Devils returned to the national rankings during the 2017 season after an upset win of fourth ranked St. Thomas. were first mentioned in the 2017 AFCA Football Coaches Top 25 poll, Sept. 24 and again Oct. 1, but fell out after a six point overtime loss to UW-La Crosse...When Stout was voted 25th in the 2017 Week 2 Top 25 poll, it was the first time Stout was ranked in the Top 25 since Week 5 of the 2005 season when the Blue Devils were ranked 23rd. During 2017, Stout climbed as high as 22nd in the D3football.com poll in week four, but fell out of the Top 25 after consecutive losses to UW-Platteville and UW-Whitewater. The Blue Devils reappeared in the receiving votes category during the Week 7 poll. The last time Stout received votes in the D3football.com poll was during the 2010 season. Stout often received votes during the 2000s. The Blue Devils appeared in the AFCA Coaches poll during the Sept. 25 poll, ranking 25th. Stout returned to the Receiving Votes category in the AFCA poll Oct. 24. Previous to the 2017 season, the last time the Blue Devils were mentioned in the D3football.com Top 25 was when they received votes during the 2010 season.

THE COACHES: UW-Stout: Clayt Birmingham (49-66) is in his 13th season in 2022 as the UW-Stout head coach. Before coming to Stout, Birmingham coached at Western Michigan, Emporia College and UW-Stevens Point. Birmingham was the UW-Stout defensive coordinator for three years before assuming the head coaching role. Birmingham played his college football at UW-Stevens Point. (Birmingham's record coming into the 2022 season 45-63)  UW-Whitewater: Kevin Bullis (76-12) is in his eighth year as head coach of the Warhawks. UW-Whitewater is coming off the program's 13th appearance in the national semifinals in the last 16 seasons, tallying a 13-1 record and the program's 38th Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship in 2021. Bullis was named WIAC George Chryst Co-Coach of the Year and D3football.com Region 6 Coach of the Year. Under Bullis' leadership, the Warhawks have collected 100 All-WIAC honors, 47 All-Region accolades and 37 All-American awards.

COACHING STAFF: Head coach Clayt Birmingham works with the defensive backs. Travis Destache returns as the defensive coordinator and also works with the linebackers. Destache was named the WIAC assistant coach of the year by the WFCA in 2017. Destache is in his 16th season with the Blue Devils and 10th as defensive coordinator.  Tarek Yaeggi is in his third year as a Blue Devil assistant coach and took over as offensive coordinator with the 2022 season. Derek Branch is in his ninth season with the Blue Devils. An all-conference offensive lineman with the Blue Devils during his playing years, Branch will continue to work with the offensive line. Jake Schiff begins his seventh year with the Blue Devil coaching staff. Schiff played defensive back for the Blue Devils and was a student assistant coach in 2014 and 2015. Schiff works with the defensive line.  Jed Stutzman is in his 10th year with the Blue Devils and will again work with the running backs. Jeff Sullivan was an assistant coach with the Blue Devils from 2003-05, returning in 2016 after an 11 year hiatus from college football. During the interim, Sullivan was an assistant coach with a number of high school programs and is a member of the first class to earn their PhD at Stout. Sullivan works with the defensive line. Mark Thomas is in his 31th season on the Blue Devils' gridiron, and will work with the outside linebackers during the 2022 season. After an all-conference and all-region career as a Blue Devil punter, Clark Riedel is in his fifth year as an assistant coach and will work with the special teams.

THE LEAGUES: UW-Stout is a member of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). Stout was fifth in league play in 2019 and the Blue Devils were picked to finish fifth in a WIAC preseason poll released in late August.

SCHOLAR-ATHLETE: Quarterback Sean Borgerding has been selected as a 2022 National Football Foundation (NFF) scholar-athlete and will be a semi-finalist for the Campbell Trophy.

SEASON HONORS: 2022: Luke Cool was named to the D3 Football Team of the week after making 5 for 5 field goals in the 3OT thriller against UW-Platteville ... Kicker Luke Cool was the WIAC special teams athlete of the week after going 7-of-7 on extra-point conversions and made field goals of 19 and 26 yards against UW-Stevens Point, Oct. 16...All-purpose player Arthur Cox was named the WIAC special teams athlete of the week after returning a kickoff for a stadium record 95 yards against UW-Eau Claire, Oct. 1...Quarterback Sean Borgerding was the UW-Stout athlete of the week after matching a career-high five touchdown passes against UW-Eau Claire, Oct. 1...Kicker Luke Cool was the WIAC special teams athlete of the week and the UW-Stout athlete of the week after kicking nine extra points vs. Crown College, and Quinton Williams was the WIAC defensive athlete of the week...Wide receiver Levy Hamer was the WIAC offensive player of the week and safety Cannon Griner was the WIAC defensive player of the week after leading Stout to a 28-25 come-from-behind win over Gustavus Adolphus, Sept. 17, in St. Peter, Minn. BIG KICKOFF RETURNS: Arthur Cox's 95 yard kickoff return for a touchdown was the longest kickoff return since Noel Gonzalez returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown against UW-Stevens Point, Nov. 5, 2016 at Stevens Point. Mike Bechtel returned a 98-yard kickoff return against UW-Whitewater, Oct. 14, 1995 on the Blue Devils' homecoming. Carlos Concepcion returned a kick 90 yards for a score against UW-Eau Claire, Oct. 23, 2010. Jesse Wendt, who holds the school single season record for kickoff return average, returned a kickoff 90 yards in 2004. Tony Beckham did not have any 90-plus yard returns, but in back-to-back seasons, the future NFL draftee returned an 88-yard kickoff and an 89-yard return in 2000 and 2001, respectively. The school record for kickoff return is 102 yards for a score by Glen Harke in 1959 against Winona State.

FIELD GOAL BLOCK & RETURN: During the 2015 season, Travis Shackleton blocked a 29-yard field goal attempt by UW-La Crosse in La Crosse, Oct. 10, 2015, and Enzo Rosani scooped up the ball on the La Crosse 14, returning it 86 yards for a score. The blocked kick was Shackleton's first career block and the touchdown was Rosani's first collegiate TD. There was no mention in the UW-Stout, the WIAC or the NCAA record books for returning blocked field goal attempts. There is now a category in the Stout record book. After sending out a request to NCAA Division III sports information directors, the following list of blocked field goals was compiled.

PROMOTIONS PLANNED FOR 2022: The Blue Devils will host  Community Day Saturday, Sept. 24 when the Blue Devils play Crown College. The game is presented by Culver's. Parent's Day will be Saturday, Oct. 1 when the Blue Devils host UW-Eau Claire. Saturday, Oct. 8 when the Blue Devils host UW-La Crosse, Stout will celebrate Homecoming and the Hall of Fame inductees. The Homecoming game will be presented by Bob and Steve's BP Amoco. Heroes in Uniform Day will be Saturday, Oct. 29 when UW-Platteville comes to town, and Saturday, Nov. 5 when they Blue Devils host UW-Whitewater will be Senior Day.  The Nov. 5 game is presented by WESTconsin Credit Union. 

MAX SPARGER: UW-Stout dedicated the Don & Nona Williams Stadium press box in honor of former UW-Stout athletic director and coach Max Sparger, September 11, 2010. Sparger led the Blue Devil football team to the 1965 WSUC championship. After leaving Stout in 1972, Sparger served as the WSUC commissioner. Sparger is a member of the UW-Stout Hall of Fame, as well as the WIAC Hall of Fame.

STOUT FOOTBALL HISTORY: Stout Institute played their first game on Nov. 4, 1911, when they lost to River Falls Normal School, 13-11. Walter Anderson scored Stout's first touchdown, an 85 yard kickoff return. A week later, Stout won their first game, 30-2, against LaCrosse Business School as Harvey Tice scored four touchdowns. The predecessor to the WIAC began in 1913 and Stout has won five conference titles - 1921, 1941, 1949, 1965 and 2000. Stout became the Blue Devils during the late 1920s or early 1930s. Football was not played during the war years of 1918, 1943, and 1944, and during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Along the way, the school has gone through a number of name changes - Stout Institute, Stout State College, Stout State University and the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Stout celebrated 100 years of football with a season-long celebration and alumni reunion during the 2011 season. | A 10-week series on Stout football is available.

TAILGATING: UW-Stout has adopted a formal tailgating policy for Blue Devil football games. The south end of the parking lot by the Don and Nona Williams Stadium has been designated as a tailgating area known as the "Tailgate Zone." Fans will be able to participate in the Blue Devil Walk. Tailgating is permitted three hours before the game, and tailgating activities will cease at game time. Only propane grills are permitted, no open flame grills. Tobacco is not permitted.

EUROPEAN FLAVOR: UW-Stout coach Clayt Birmingham has been active in raising the popularity of American football in Europe and has made several trips to Europe to participate in workshops and coaching clinics. Quentin Danès, a football coach from France, spent two weeks in the Blue Devils' 2019 training camp. | Danes Feature story | During the 2018 season, the Blue Devils had a coach from Germany into preseason camp for a couple of days. Enzo Rosani began his career as a Blue Devil, joining Stout as a cornerback from France on the 2014 roster. Feature Story In all likelihood, Rosani is the only international student to have played football for UW-Stout for four seasons. Rosani earned All-WIAC second team honors. For the 2019 season, Quentin Danes spent two weeks during the preseason working with the coaching staff. Danes was a teammate of Rosani on the French national team...The Blue Devils have consistently welcomed European coaches to their training camp. In 2011 it was Nico Teichert and Johannes Fiebig from Germany getting an up close look at American football. The Blue Devils also had Antti Kurenniemi, a native of Finland, on their roster in 2011. Kurenniemi saw action in several games. In 2012, the Blue Devils, for the first time in several years, did not host a European coach, but did have an international player, Jan Andre Millemann from Germany, who is the subject of this feature story.

DON & NONA WILLIAMS STADIUM: UW-Stout's Don and Nona Williams Stadium got a facelift in 2018 with the installation of an updated surface. FieldTurf installed the FieldTurf Revolution 360. FieldTurf promotes this surface as having "optimal durability, resilience, and feel." A padding/drainage mat will be added, as well as flushing the current drainage system to make sure the field sheds water as designed. The field's layout will be similar to the previous markings and will again include markings for high school hash marks. The S logo at midfield has been replaced by the new Blaze head logo. The stadium, which was opened during the 2001 season, last had the stadium turf replaced during the summer of 2008 when the original Astroturf-type surface was replaced with ProGrass, a surface that more closely resembled natural grass. Don & Nona Williams Stadium was only the second artificial playing surface in the state of Wisconsin when it opened in 2001. At the time, the Wisconsin Badgers were the only Wisconsin college team that played their games on artificial turf. The Green Bay Packers had an artificial surface in their practice facility. Now, every WIAC school has an artificial surface, and many high schools in the state have followed suit.
