THE 2021-22 BLUE DEVILS:
  • Raegan Sorensen has been having a very strong freshman season off the bench and the guard now leads the Blue Devils in scoring, averaging 12.8 points per game, eighth in the WIAC. Sorensen, a two-time WIAC/Kwik Trip Athlete of the Week, has had two games with 25 points, including Stout's outing against UW-Eau Claire and threatened the school record of 39 points when she tossed in 36 points against Aurora University in late December. Sorensen hit the game-winner at the buzzer against UW-Stevens Point. Sorensen leads the team in rebounds with 4.8 per game, is among the leaders in assists (1.5/game) and leads the team in steals with 29. She has gone to the free throw line more than anyone else on the team (60-78 / .769) Amanda Giesen is 52 of 77 from the line (.675), while Sorensen is 56 of 73 (.767). Sorensen is shooting 55.2 percent (69-125) from the floor - tops in the WIAC - and has hit 7 of 21 3-pointers. Lauren Arenz has eight blocked shots to Sorensen's seven.
  • Amanda Giesen is averaging 12.4 points per contest, ninth in the WIAC, and is averaging 4.4 rebounds. Giesen is shooting 69 of 141 (.489) from the floor, 10th in the WIAC. Giesen has scored in double digits in 13 of 16 games.
  • Last year's conference newcomer of the year Anna Mutch is averaging 10.8 points and is third in the WIAC in rebounds at 6.7. While scoring roles are slowly and slightly shifting to more players, Mutch is the team's leader in assists, tallying 51 total for a per game average of 3.0, second in the league. As a freshman, Mutch last year was averaging 1.9 assists. She has actually kicked up her scoring average a tick or two. During the 2021 COVID season, Mutch averaged 10.6 points over nine game.
  • Lauren Arenz has dished off 40 assists for a 2.3 per game average, 10th in the league and has eight blocked shots, a top-20 conference mark. The Blue Devils continued to stay on the heels of the Pointers before finally taking the lead with only a minute left. The Pointers were able to tie it back up at 61 a piece, but Sorensen nailed a jumper from around the left elbow as time expired to end the Pointers hope for overtime. Sorensen finished with 18 points. Amanda Giesen added 15 points and Lizzy Olsem and Anna Mutch contributed nine points.
  • The Blue Devils upset 11th-ranked UW-Eau Claire, 72-68, Jan. 12, then saw their contest at UW-Oshkosh, Jan. 15, canceled due to COVID-19 protocols.
  • UW-Stout never trailed and the Blue Devils always found an answer for any UW-Eau Claire comeback attempt and Stout took a 72-68 win out of Zorn Arena Jan. 12. The Blue Devils held a 21-17 lead at the end of the first quarter, took a 34-25 lead into halftime, led 54-47 after three periods and held off the 11th-ranked Blugolds for the four point win. While Eau Claire outscored Stout 43-38 in the second half, the Blugolds only got as close as three points twice in the fourth quarter. Led by Raegan Sorensen at the free throw line, Stout drilled 10 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter, with Sorensen dropping nine charity shots in the final stanza to keep Eau Claire at bay. Stout finished the game hitting 18 of 26 free throws. Sorensen led all scorers with 25 points, 15 in the second half.. She was 13 of 15 from the line and 6 of 10 from field goal range. Amanda Giesen finished with 17 points and Lizzy Olsem added 14 points.  Stout held an advantage in rebounds, pulling down 38 to Eau Claire's 34. Stout's Anna Mutch led all rebounders with nine.

The Pointers' Taylor Greenheck tied the score with two free throws, tying the score for the 14th time in the game. The Pointers shot ahead, 69-67, on a pair of free throws by Kellan Schmidt at 3:11 and nearly two minutes later Schmidt gave the Pointers a four point lead, 72-67, with 1:32 remaining. Emily Jacques pulled Stout to within two points, 71-69, at 1:17 and Fabeck popped a 3-pointer with eight seconds left for what would prove to be the final score. But the drama was far from over. Katie Christopherson stole the ball, was fouled and missed both chances. The Pointers' Bailee Collins rebounded and the Pointers called timeout, after which Watkins put the game on ice with her fourth steal of the night.
