Baseball Preview: Stout to face Whitewater in home-and-home series

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (12-12, 8-8 WIAC) are scheduled to travel to UW-Whitewater (21-4, 13-3 WIAC), Wednesday, April 28, then host the Warhawks, Saturday, May 1. Both days are slated for a 1 p.m. starts and both dates are scheduled as WIAC contests. The Warhawks are currently in a tie for first place with UW-Stevens Point. 

Always check with the home team on their current spectator policy.

LAST TIME THEY MET: The Warhawks defeated UW-Stout 6-1 in the first game of the 2019 WIAC Baseball Championship. The Warhawks have won the last 22 meetings between the teams with Stout's last win over the Warhawks coming April 27, 2014, a 2-1 victory for the Blue Devils | Game Story and Stats
 
2021 WIAC SCHEDULE: The schedule for each of the teams in the WIAC in 2021 includes 28 conference games, as well as a "non-conference schedule" consisting of contests against only WIAC schools. The league has been separated into divisions, with Stout, UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse and UW-Platteville in the West Division and UW-Whitewater, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Stevens Point and Finlandia in the East Division. The teams will play the schools in the same division in four doubleheaders, with two of the doubleheaders serving as non-conference contests. Two doubleheaders will serve as conference contests. The conference tournament has been expanded to six teams with the No. 3 thru No. 6 seeds participating in "play-in" games at the site of the higher seed on May 19. The winners of the single-elimination contests will join the No. 1 seed and No. 2 seed at the double-elimination finals in Whitewater May 21-22.

BLUE DEVIL OFFENSE: Kasey Bass leads the Blue Devils at the plate with an average of .377 (29-77), driving in 27 RBI to match Hunter Merrill. The duo are tied for seventh in the WIAC in RBI.  Bass has scored 23 runs and has seven doubles and five home runs, tied for fifth in the WIAC in home runs. Charlie Szykowny is hitting .372 (35-94) with a team-best 33 runs scored (tied for first in the WIAC) and 17 RBI. The Blue Devil shortstop has eight doubles, two triples and four home runs.  Szykowny, who sported a 13-game hitting streak,  has been on base in all 24 games this season, and has successfully reached base in 31 consecutive games, reaching back to the 2019 season. Hunter Merrill is hitting .316 (30-95) and has raised his batting average more than 100 points in the month of April. Merrill was hitting as low as .211 in early April, and has seen his average raise steadily ever since. Merrill is the team's leader in home runs with seven, good for a tie for third in the WIAC. As a team, Stout is third in the league in home runs with 27, led by Merrill (7), Bass (5), Szykowny (4), Riley Boushack (3) and Alex Jinkins (2). Joel Thimsen, Colin Hageman, Paul Weise, Jack Schripke and Ryan Herbst have each hit a home run this season. Stout has hit more than twice as many home runs as their opponents (12), second fewest allowed in the WIAC. Boushack may be the most patient Blue Devil of the bunch, leading the league in walks drawn with 23. Jinkins has walked 19 times, good for third in the WIAC.  | Statistics

BLUE DEVIL PITCHING: James Palmer has had a strong senior season, posting a 4-2 overall record with an ERA of 2.20 with 45 strikeouts in 41.0 innings of work. Palmer is second in the WIAC in innings pitched (41.0), third in strikeouts (45), and fourth in opponent's batting average (.181).  Cody Urban has started five games and is 1-1 over 36.0 innings pitched with 22 strikeouts. Ethan Kjellberg has made five starts and is looking for his first win of the season. Jace Baumann has made four starts and Brock Burg two. Burg is 1-2 and Baumann 0-3. Alex Mahaz is 2-0 coming out of the bullpen and Trevor Miller, who two saves, is 1-1. Mahaz has made six appearances and Miller five.

UW-STOUT LAST TIME OUT:  UW-Stout collected 25 hits and 27 runs, but had a settle for a split with UW-La Crosse, April 24, in Menomonie. The Eagles came back to win the first game, 11-9, but Stout scored 17 runs over the first three innings to halt the Eagles, 18-8, in seven innings.  | Game Story and Stats


SCOUTING UW-WHITEWATER: The Warhawks were ranked eighth in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)/D3baseball.com Division III poll. Whitewater leads the WIAC in batting average (.352), ERA (2.97), most strikeouts by pitchers (247, 9.9/g), fewest strikeouts by batter (127, 1.1/g) and overall runs scored (220, 8.8/g). Jacob DeMeyer leads the way at the plate with an average of .413 (31-75) and has six doubled, trhee home runs and 22 RBI. Nick Santoro has an average of .379 (39-103) with seven doubled and 20 RBI. Matt Korman (.362) leads the team in RBI with 34, third in the WIAC, and has 10 doubles. Returning first team all-WIAC pitchers Matt O'Sullivan, Westin Muir and Connor Spear return as a primary starter along with Donovan Brandle. O'Sullivan is 6-0 with six starts and an ERA of 1.64 and a league-best 64 strikeouts. O'Sullivan fanned 17 in a 7-inning, 10-0 win over Finlandia earlier this season. Muir is 5-0 with seven starts with an ERA of 0.92 with 49 strikeouts. Spear is 2-0 in five starts with an ERA of 2.12 and 38 strikeouts. LAST TIME OUT: The Warhawks played six games with UW-Stevens Point last week and the teams split the two conference doubleheaders, April 20 (W 11-1, L 7-3) and April 23 (W 11-1, L 9-6), but Whitewater swept the non-conference doubleheader, April 24 (12-5, 17-1). The Warhawks (21-4 overall) put together one big inning early in each contest, defeating the Pointers 12-5 in Game 1 before finishing the day with a 17-1 triumph in seven innings. | Game Story and Statistics

AWARDS AND HONORS: 2021: James Palmer earned WIAC player of the week honors after recording nine strikeouts in a season-opening 16-2 win over UW-Platteville...2020: Charlie Szykowny earned WIAC player of the week honors after the Blue Devils went 2-1 in their only games of the 2020 season...

COACHES: Ben Kincaid (54-84) is in his fifth year as the Blue Devils' head coach with the 2021 season, following two years as a Blue Devil assistant coach where he worked primarily with the pitchers. Kincaid played collegiately at at Minnesota State University-Mankato, where he was a four year letter winner, playing in 149 games. He finished with a .339 batting average, 38 doubles (5th on MSU's career list), six home runs and 140 runs batted in (6th on MSU's career list). As a right-handed pitcher he sported a 14-8 record with a 3.45 earned run average and had 148 strikeouts in 172 innings pitched. Kincaid was named to the All-Central Region team three times in his career. An Eau Claire native, Kincaid played for the local Eau Claire Express. 

DOWN THE ROAD:  The Blue Devils are scheduled to play three doubleheaders against UW-Platteville, with the first two doubleheaders slated for conference play. Stout will host the Pioneers, Tuesday, May 4 at 1 p.m., then will travel to Platteville, Friday, May 7. The teams are scheduled to play a non-conference doubleheader, Saturday, May 8 in Menomonie.
