UW-La Crosse Spectator Policy
THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (8-6, 5-3 WIAC) are scheduled to play three doubleheaders against UW-La Crosse (12-8, 5-7 WIAC) this week, with two of those doubleheaders scheduled for Menomonie. Stout will host the Eagles Tuesday, April 20 at 1 p.m. in a pair of conference games. The teams will meet in La Crosse Friday, April 23 in conference play, then are scheduled for two non-conference games in Menomonie, Saturday, April 24.
Always check with the home team on their current spectator policy.
LAST TIME THEY MET: UW-Stout took the early lead in both games of a non-conference doubleheader, but UW-La Crosse came back to take both wins 11-5, 6-1, March 25, at Copeland Park. In the opener, UW-Stout scored four runs in the top of the first inning and held the Eagles at bay until the home team launched 10 unanswered runs over three innings, starting with a five-run barrage in the third inning, followed by four in the fourth and a single run in the fifth. La Crosse made it 11-4 with a run in the seventh that the Blue Devils got back with a single run in the ninth on
Riley Boushack's third RBI of the game. In the first inning,
Alex Jinkins led off with a walk, then moved to third on
Hunter Merrill's double to right center. Boushack plated both runners with a single through the right side.
Charlie Szykowny moved Boushack to second with a single, then Boushack came home on
Nolan Harke's single, putting Szykowny at third, who would eventually come home on a wild pitch.
Ethan Kjellberg stranded three runners over the first two innings before he got in trouble in the third inning, giving up five earned runs. The Eagles finished the game with 18 hits off three Stout pitchers, while Stout finished with eight hits. Merrill, Boushack and Szykowny each finished with two hits apiece. Stout opened the scoring in the second game as well, taking a 1-0 lead in the third inning when the Blue Devils took advantage of a couple of Eagle mistakes. After Merrill reached on a walk,
Joel Thimsen reached on an infield error, pushing Merrill to second. A balk advanced both runners and Merrill scored on Szykowny's ground out. The Eagles scored three runs in the fourth and added two more runs in the sixth inning. Back-to-back wild pitches gave La Crosse a run in the eighth.
Brock Burg went 6.0 innings to take the loss, scattering six hits, five runs, four earned and recorded two strikeouts. Boushack was 2 for 4 in the second game to finish 4 for 7 on the day. |
Game Story and Stats
2021 WIAC SCHEDULE: The schedule for each of the teams in the WIAC in 2021 includes 28 conference games, as well as a "non-conference schedule" consisting of contests against only WIAC schools. The league has been separated into divisions, with Stout, UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse and UW-Platteville in the West Division and UW-Whitewater, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Stevens Point and Finlandia in the East Division. The teams will play the schools in the same division in four doubleheaders, with two of the doubleheaders serving as non-conference contests. Two doubleheaders will serve as conference contests. The conference tournament has been expanded to six teams with the No. 3 thru No. 6 seeds participating in "play-in" games at the site of the higher seed on May 19. The winners of the single-elimination contests will join the No. 1 seed and No. 2 seed at the double-elimination finals in Whitewater May 21-22.

PARKING: There is no free parking for weekday baseball & softball games. Regular parking restrictions are strictly enforced. Parking for baseball and softball spectators during weekday games is restricted to on-street parking and in Lot 29. Spectators that park in Lot 29 (located just north of the outdoor track) must pay parking fees and register their license plate at the pay station near the main East entrance of the Sports & Fitness Center. Lot 29 parking restrictions end at 4 pm on Monday through Friday.
DO NOT PARK in Lot 4 during the week. Lot 4 is the parking lot located to the west of the Sports & Fitness Center and north of Don & Nona Williams Stadium (the football stadium).
Lot 4 is only open to the general public from 1 p.m. on Fridays until 9 p.m. on Sundays. There is no general parking in Lot 4 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdays and not until 1 pm on Fridays. Team buses may park on the east side (outdoor track side - not the metered side) of 3rd Street East. Parking is permitted in all university lots on weekends.
BLUE DEVIL OFFENSE: Charlie Szykowny leads the Blue Devils at the plate with an average of .377 (26-69), smacking six doubles, two triples and three home runs. Szykowny has 11 RBI and has has scored 27 runs, second in the WIAC. Szykowny owns a 13 game hitting streak and has been on base in all 18 games this season. Szykowny has a knack for getting on base with a career on-base percentage of .459. During his three-year Blue Devil career, in games where he has had at least one trip to the plate (31 games), Szykowny has found his way on base in 28 of those games.
Kasey Bass leads the team in RBI with 20, hitting .357 (20-56) with six doubles and three home runs.
Hunter Merrill leads the team in home runs with six and has 18 RBI. As a team, Stout is third in the league in home runs with 19, led by Merrill (6), Szykowny (3), Bass (3) and
Riley Boushack (2) Alix Jinkins,

BLUE DEVIL PITCHING: James Palmer has had a strong start to his senior season, posting a 4-1 overall record with an ERA of 1.85 with 41 strikeouts in 34.0 innings of work. Palmer is second i the WIAC in strikeouts.
Cody Urban has started five games and is 1-1 over 28.0 innings pitched with 18 strikeouts.
Ethan Kjellberg has made four starts and is looking for his first win of the season.
Jace Baumann has made three starts and
Brock Burg one. Burg is 1-1 and Baumann 0-1.
Alex Mahaz and
Trevor Miller each are 1-0 and Millr has two saves and Mahaz one. Mahaz has made five appearances and Miller four.
UW-STOUT LAST TIME OUT: UW-Stout pounded out six home runs on the day and earned a split with UW-Oshkosh, winning the first game 7-4, but falling in the second, 12-9.
Kasey Bass and
Hunter Merrill each had two home runs and
Alex Jinkins and
Colin Hageman each had one. Bass had two home runs in the second game and finished with five RBI in the contest, going 2 for 4. Merrill had a home run in each game, collecting two RBI in the first on a two-run shot, then had a solo shot in the second game. Jinkins and Hageman hit single home runs in the opening game, with Hageman delivering a two-run home run in a three-run second inning. Stout had two big innings in the opening game, scoring three runs in the second and four runs in the eighth. Jinkins scored on an error and Hageman's two-run blast tallied the three runs in the second inning. Oshkosh pulled to within 3-2 with a solo run in the third, tied the game in the sixth and too the lead in the eighth. Merrill delivered a two-run shot in the eighth inning and Jinkins, following Merrill in the order, lifted a solo shot. Jack Shirpke had a sacrfice fly. In the second game, Stout fell behing 9-0, making a comeback in the fourth inning. Bass hit a three-run home run and Merrill followed right behind with a solo shot. Stout added two runs in the fifth inning and Hageman's single drove in a run in the sixth and Stout trailed, 9-7. The Titans extended the lead to 12-7 with a three-run seventh. Bass hit his second home run of the game, a two-run blast, in the seventh inning in what would prove to be the end of the scoring in the game. |

SCOUTING UW-LA CROSSE: The Eagles return 2019 WIAC pitcher of the year Zach Pronschinske, first team third baseman Brennan Schmitt, and honorable mention outfielder Zach Carney. Connor Roesler leads the team in average, hitting at a .433 clip (26-60), wth 22 runs scored and a double and home run. Zach Carney is averaging .397 (31-78) with a two doubles and two triples. Jonathon Wizner is hitting .367 (22-60) with three doubles. Shane Coker is hittng .316 (24-76) with 22 runs scored and a team-best 20 RBI. Mac Born is averaging .308 (20-65) with 19 TBI on eight doubles, a triple and two home runs. Ethan Gerstner is averaging .345 (12-35) in 12 games played with 13 RBI. Brannan Schmitt over 12 games is averaging .354 (17-48) with six doubles, a triple, two home runs and 17 RBI. Sawyer Phillips, Jack Mizgalski, Zach Pronschinske, Ben Byom and Jack Perinovic have made most of the starts. Phillips is 3-2 with an ERA of 4.44 and is matching Pronschinske with a team-best 27 strikeouts. Pronschinske is 2-2 with an ERA of 8.04 and 27 strikeouts. Mizgalski is 2-1 with an ERA of 6.94 and 20 strikeouts. Byom is 0-1 with 12 strikeouts and Perinovic is 1-1 with 13 strikeouts. LA CROSSE LAST TIME OUT: The Eagles dropped a WIAC doubleheader to UW-Stevens Point April 17 at Copeland Park. The Pointers won the opener, 8-3, and the nightcap, 12-9. Eight different players recorded a hit for UWL. Sawyer Phillips (3-2) took the loss, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing six hits, six runs and one walk while striking out eight. UW-Stevens Point finished with 10 hits. In the nightcap, UW-Stevens Point scored seven runs in the second inning. UW-Stevens Point scored three times in the fifth with Simmons hitting a two-run triple and Comer an RBI double. UWL made it 11-7 in the bottom of the frame on Zach Carney's single, but the Eagles left the bases-loaded for the second time in the game. The Pointers took a 12-7 lead in the sixth on Kyle Finger's solo home run. UWL scored twice in the bottom of the seventh on Coker's two-run single scoring Hans and Carney. The Eagles left 14 runners on base in the game. La Crosse finished with 16 hits with six players recording at least two. Carney went 4-for-6 with two runs and an RBI while Connor Roesler, Brennan Schmitt, Andrew Rajkovich, Ethan Gerstner and Hans each had two. Shane Coker and Gerstner had three RBI. Jack Perinovic took the loss, pitching 1.1 innings, allowing three hits, six runs and two walks with one strikeout. UWL used seven pitchers in the game. |

2020: Charlie Szykowny earned WIAC player of the week honors after the Blue Devils went 2-1 in their only games of the 2020 season.
COACHES: Ben Kincaid (52-80) is in his fifth year as the Blue Devils' head coach with the 2021 season, following two years as a Blue Devil assistant coach where he worked primarily with the pitchers. Kincaid played collegiately at at Minnesota State University-Mankato, where he was a four year letter winner, playing in 149 games. He finished with a .339 batting average, 38 doubles (5th on MSU's career list), six home runs and 140 runs batted in (6th on MSU's career list). As a right-handed pitcher he sported a 14-8 record with a 3.45 earned run average and had 148 strikeouts in 172 innings pitched. Kincaid was named to the All-Central Region team three times in his career. An Eau Claire native, Kincaid played for the local Eau Claire Express.
DOWN THE ROAD: The Blue Devils are scheduled to play at UW-Whitewater, Wednesday, April 28, then will be in Menomonie, Saturday, May 1 to host the Warhawks.
