Blue Devil tennis takes 7-2 win over UW-Oshkosh

UW-Stout 7, UW-Oshkosh 2

MENOMONIE (April 14, 2021) - On Sunday, the Blue Devil tennis team was the width of a tennis string away from snagging a conference win. Today, UW-Stout took all three doubles matches to open the day and went on a 7-2 win over UW-Oshkosh on Stout's South Courts.

Lauren Couves and Annie Sandry trailed early at No. 1 doubles, but powered their way back to take an 8-5 win. Mariah Kent and Olivia Leipnitz teamed together for the first time this season and took a No. 2 win, 8-6. Kylie Rennie and Kyrstin Hanson captured the win at No. 3 doubles, 8-6.

Couves, Leipnitz, Hanson and Madeline Binczak all captured singles wins, all in straight sets. Couves won at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-2. Leipnitz took No. 4 singles in the most dominant fashion of the day, losing only one game, 6-0, 6-1. Hanson had a 6-3, 6-0, win at No. 5 singles and Binczak recorded her first collegiate win, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 6 singles.

Couves, Leipnitz and Hanson were all part of wins at singles and doubles.

Lauren played very solid and steady today," coach Bryce Supri said.  "She is very fast on the court and can get to a lot of shots other people can't.  She does a great job of controlling each point and dictating play."

About the doubles play of Couves and Sandry, Supri said,  "Annie and Lauren did a great job of adjusting after a slow start to finish their match really strong. Once they settled in to the match, and started picking bigger targets, they went on a roll and won seven out of the next eight games."

Supri liked the pairing of Kent and Leipnitz, and not only because they appear to have good chemistry on the court.

"It is kind of a cool pairing, because they are both packaging majors, and fit together well as a team," Supri said.  "It was a back and forth match the entire way, but they found a way to win the big points at the end.

"It was great to have Mariah back in the lineup.  She made the most of her (singles) match today, splitting sets and forcing a match tiebreak.  With this being her first match of the season, her improvement throughout the match was vast."

"Kylie and Kyrstin played their best doubles match of the season so far," Supri said about his No. 3 doubles team. "They continue to get better with every match they play, and have great chemistry on the court."

"Maddy (Binczak) got her first collegiate win today," Supri said.  "She was extremely consistent and executed her game plan excellently."

"I was very happy to see the team take another step in the right direction," Supri said.  "It was great to see the hard work of all the players finally pay off with a team win today."

This was Stout's first win over UW-Oshkosh since Oct. 6, 2007.

Stout will return to action, Saturday, April 17 at UW-Stevens Point, then will close out the home schedule, Tuesday, April 20 when they host UW-Eau Claire.
