Blue Devil tennis edged by Falcons

UW-River Falls 5, UW-Stout 4

RIVER FALLS (April 11, 2021) - One point this way and one point that way made all the difference as UW-Stout was edged by UW-River Falls, 5-4, Sunday at Knowles Center.

Just as the teams were about to start their warm-ups, rain forced the meet inside.

The Blue Devils (0-3, 0-3 WIAC) dropped two of the three doubles matches to the Falcons (1-6, 1-3 WIAC), with the No. 1 doubles team of Lauren Couves and Annie Sandry posting an 8-3 win.

"Lauren and Annie played a really solid doubles match today," coach Bryce Supri said. "They've been playing well together all season, and it really showed today.  They both had a high first-serve percentage, which allowed for more aggressive play at the net."

The No. 2 doubles team of Kylie Rennie and Kyrstin Hanson lost an 8-7 decision, but lost in a tie-breaker in the tight match. The duo was facing elimination, trailing 7-6 and down 40-love in the game, but came back to force the tie-breaker. Rennie and Hanson had match point at 6-5 in the tie-breaker, but could not convert the point, Supri said.

Olivia Leipnitz and Madeline Binczak lost 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.

Couves, Sandry and Leipnitz each won their respective singles matches.

Couves defeated Kailey Courteau 6-3, 2-6, 10-4, at No. 1 singles. Sandry took a straight set 6-4, 6-3, win over Abbie Reed at No. 2 singles.

"Annie is the team captain and leader on the team," Supri said. "In her singles match she did a great job of executing her game plan."

Leipnitz earned her first collegiate win, taking a 6-3, 7-5, win over Karyn Duddek at No. 4 singles.

"It was an incredible battle all the way through," Supri said. "Olivia fell behind 4-1 in the second set, but then found a strategy that worked well, allowing her to come back and win in straight sets."

Rennie lost at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, Hanson lost at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-1, and Binczak lost at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 7-5.

"It was disappointing to be so close to winning the match, but exciting to see everyone play as well as they did," Supri said.

Stout will host UW-Oshkosh, Wednesday, April 14, at 2 p.m. and will be at UW-Stevens Point, Saturday, April 17 at noon.
