THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (3-2-0, 3-2-0 WIAC) were in first place coming in Wednesday game at UW-Eau Claire (3-1, 3-1 WIAC), but after the Blugolds torched Stout, 10-2, the Blue Devils dropped into a four-way tie for first place with Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point and UW-River Falls.
THIS SEASON: The COVID-19 pandemic forced all sports to rethink their schedule and WIAC hockey will have 10 games, which will only be against conference opponents, plus a conference tournament. The teams will meet twice during the shortened regular season, all in the same week with games on Wednesdays and Fridays. The conference tournament is scheduled to be held the second week of March, with the first round Monday, March 8, the second round Wednesday, March 10 and the championship game Friday, March 12. All tournament games will be played at the high seed. The top two seeded teams will get a first round bye. There are six teams in the WIAC for men's hockey - UW-Eau Claire, UW-River Falls, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Stout, UW-Superior and Northland College. Fans will not be allowed during the 2020-21 season.

A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS:
- Zack Cloutier was named Kwik Trip/WIAC Athlete of the Week following a pair of wins last week over Northland College. The freshman from Val-D'or, Quebec, notched two wins during the week, including his first collegiate shutout in a 1-0 victory over Northland College on Feb. 10. Cloutier held off Northland on Feb. 12, with a 4-2 win, his third of the season in four games. In the 1-0 home triumph over Northland, Cloutier turned away 23 shots. In the 4-2 road win, Cloutier stopped 34 shots, including 15 in the second period and 14 in the third. On the week, Clouiter recorded 57 saves with a .966 saves percentage and a goals-against-average of 1.00. For the season, Cloutier is 3-1-0 with a goals against average of 1.51 and a saves percentage of .947.
- Raphael Gosselin leads the team in points, posting one goals and four assists.
- Logan Nelson scored a pair of goals and added an assist in Stout's first game of the season. Nelson scored his team-leading third goal in Stout's 4-2 win over Northland. With three goals and one assist, Nelson currently has four points.
- The Blue Devils have eight players who have scored at least one goal this season. Peter Verstegen (1-2-3), Matt Dahlseide (1-1-2), Brandon Connett (1-1-2), Kobe Keller (1-1-2), Steven Mordini (1-1-2), Alex Stuckert (1-0-1) and Keegan Bauman (1-0-1) have joined Gosselin and Nelson in lighting the lamp. Verstegen, Connett and Dahlseide have each scored game-winning-goals. Connett's goal came in the final two minutes of a 1-0 win over Northland. Nelson, Connett and Bauman each have a power play goal.
- Alex Nagel and Joey Petronack each have two assists and Noah Carson, Alec Skar, Evan Butcher, Mikey Butcher and Riley Jensen each have a single assist.
- The Blue Devils have four seniors, eight juniors, 11 sophomores and nine freshmen on their roster.
A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS LAST SEASON:
- Raphael Gosselin, Evan Butcher and Konnar Dechaine are the returning Blue Devils' scoring leaders, with Butcher leading the way with 18 points on four goals and a team-best 14 assists. Gosselin finished with four power play goals and Dechaine had three power play goals. Goesselin had eight total goals and nine assists. Dechaine finished the 2019-20 season with eight goals and seven assists. Logan Nelson finished with a team-best 10 goals and dished off four assists. Alex Nagel finished with nine assists, along with four goals. Freshman Vladislav Sorokin has six goals, two on the power play for the season, and has two assists. Alex Bowe had three goals and six assists.
- Freshman goalie Brennan Kitchen, who earned all-conference honorable mention honors, started 16 games and worked 1016 minutes between the pipes. For the season, Kitchen has a save percentage of .904 with a GAA of 3.13. He has a record of 7-10-1.
- Kitchen had 55 saves in a shutout win over Northland College and the 55 saves were the most saves since Corey Koop recorded more than 50 saves twice during the 2013-14 season. Koop had 51 saves against UW-Eau Claire, Feb. 20 2014, and 59 saves against UW-Stevens Point, Dec. 7, 2013. The shutout over Northland College was Stout's first since the Blue Devils blanked Marian University, 3-0, Nov. 17, 2018.
- The Blue Devils averaged 2.5 goals per contest and gave up 3.8 goals.
- Brady Meyers has played 282 minutes and recorded 134 saves.
- The Blue Devils scored 14 power play goals against 86 opportunities (16.3 percent).
- The Blue Devils allowed 13 power plays goal against 87 opportunities (85.1 percent). The Blue Devils were 20th nationally in penalty kill last season.

- Stout is currently 3-6 on the power play (.500) and 3-5 on penalty kill (.400).
BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT
- The Blue Devils ran into a buzz saw when they travel to Hobbs Ice Arena Wednesday as host UW-Eau Claire piled up 10 goals against the Blue Devils in a 10-2 decision. The first period featured six goals, but five of them were from Eau Claire (3-1, 3-1 WIAC). Stout closed out the period on Joey Petronack's power play goal with 18 seconds left in the period. The Blugolds scored three more goals in the second before Riley Jensen made it 8-2 in the final two minutes of the period. Eau Claire added two more goals in the third. Brennan Kitchen made his first start of the season, but was tagged for four goals and was pulled 11 minutes into the opening period. Kitchen stil made nine saves in just over one half of a period. Brady Meyers finished the game, making 24 saves, but surrendered six goals. Zach Dyment recorded 16 saves for Eau Claire.The Blue Devils (3-1-0, 3-1-0 WIAC) swept their Northland College opponent last week, picking up their first shutout of the season, 1-0, Feb. 10, in Menomonie, then got a 4-2 win, Feb. 12, in Ashland.
- The game was looking at a dead tie after regulation, but Stout's Brandon Connett scored the lone goal of the game on a power play with only 1:38 left in the game to down the Lumberjacks. The first period saw a defensive battle by both teams as they tried to get on the board first. With back and forth shots, both teams couldn't find the back of the net. With 2:54 remaining in the period, UW-Stout skated two players down as Northland College tried to take advantage. But the Blue Devils held on tight and killed both penalties off. The score remained 0-0 going into the first intermission. The Lumberjacks out shot Stout in the first period 8-7. The second period looked a lot like the first period as far as goals, but more offense was involved. The Blue Devils ended the period with 14 shots and the Lumberjacks ended with 9. Both teams went on power play chances, but did not score as the score remained 0-0. In the third period, Stout was firing shots from all over the Northland zone as the Blue Devils outshot the Lumberjacks, 18-7 in the third period. With 8:29 left in the game, both teams took a penalty and the game saw four on four play. Each team had their chances to score, but no goals were recorded. Another four on four was made with 3:05 left. But this time, Northland took a penalty during the four on four. With 2:10 left in the game, Stout was looking at a rare four on three power play. With only 1:38 left in the game, Brandon Connett scored his first collegiate goal at the right time as Stout took the first lead of the game. Raphael Gosselin and Joey Petronack assisted on the power play goal. With both teams skating four on four still, Northland took their goalie out to gain an extra attacker with 1:30 left in the game. But Stout held on tight and recorded the win. Blue Devil's Zach Cloutier ended with a shutout, a win, and recorded 23 saves. - UW-Stout and Northland College traded goals until Stout's Peter Verstegen what would prove to be the game-winning goal in the third period to lift Stout to a 4-2 win over Northland College Friday. The win moved the Blue Devils into first place of the Wisconsin intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) with six points. Northland got on the board first on a goal by Jackson Breton at 16:39 of the first period. Stout came back at 7:18 of the second period on Logan Nelson's power play goal, with assists by Even Butcher and Alex Nagel. The Blue Devils took a 2-1 lead when Stephen Mordini scored his first goal of the season at 7:09 of the third, with assists by Verstegen and Riley Jensen, but the Lumberjacks scored a minute later to knot the score. Verstegen scored unassisted less than two minutes later at 10:04. Kobe Keller scored at 11:17, with assists by Mordini and Raphael Gosselin, to give Stout a two goal lead. Both Verstegen and Keller scored their first goals of the season. Zack Cloutier had 34 saves for Stout and recorded his third win of the season. SCOUTING UW-EAU CLAIRE
- Last season, the Blugolds won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) tournament championship victory and their first NCAA Tournament bid since 2013. Due to COVID-19, the NCAA canceled all winter championships taking place in the spring of 2020.
- First team all-conference goalie Zach Dyment and two-time first team all-conference defenseman Adam Parsells returns, as do honorable mention forward Andrew McGlynn, and Jon Richards.
- The Blugolds have a balanced attack over their three games, with Jon Richards, Nathan Dingmann and Derek Hammer each scoring two goals and and assist, while Adam Parsells and Charlie Weland have scored a goal and two assists. Jodan Kovacs has three assists and Andrew McGlynn, Matt Stanton, Cole Paskus, Nick Techel and Simon Sagissor have each scored a goal.
- The Blugolds split their opening series with UW-Stevens Point, the team they beat in the conference championship game last season. The Blugolds cruised to a 7-3 in the season opener, but then were tripped up 2-1 in the rematch.
- In the goal, Zach Dyment is 1-1-0 with a GAA of 2.50 and a saves percentage of .896. Riley McVeigh earned his first win of the season in net in the 5-1 win over Superior, recording 15 saves. McVeigh has a GAA of 1.00 and a saves percentage of .938.

THE BLUGOLDS LAST TIME OUT
- UW-Eau Claire defeated UW-Superior, 5-1, Feb. 10, but their game at Superior Feb. 12 was canceled due to COVID-19 protocol.
- After a deadlocked first period, the Blugolds would open the flood gates in the final two periods for a 5-1 win. Coming off a home loss just five days prior, Eau Claire would play with intensity and a consistent counterattack to down the Yellowjackets with a flurry of goals. Adam Parsells would start things off with a wrist shot from the point for the game's first goal. Parsells would garner a helper of his own later in the game for a two-point night. Him and Charles Weiand would be the only Blugolds with multi-point games. The offensive firepower would continue just moments later after Jon Richards would put home a rebound to increase the lead to 2-0. In the third, the Yellowjackets would cut the lead in half with a goal of their own, but Eau Claire answered with three goals from Cole Paskus, Nathan Dingmann and Derek Hammer. WHEN STOUT AND EAU CLAIRE MET LAST SEASON
- The Blugolds took all three meetings last season, starting with a 4-1 win in Menomonie, Nov. 23, 2019 and continuing with a 5-4 overtime win in Eau Claire, Jan. 31 and a shutout 4-0 win Feb. 1 at Hobbs Ice Arena.
- In the opener in Menomonie, the teams traded goals in the first period, with the Blugolds Derek Hammer scoring around the 13 minute mark and Stout matched that when Kobe Keller scored in the final minute of the period. The Blugolds scored a goal in the second and Jon Richards scored twice in the third. Evan Bisek recorded 30 saves for Stout, Zach Dement had 19 saves for Eau Claire. | Game Story and Statistics
- UW-Stout took third-ranked UW-Eau Claire into overtime, but the Blugolds scored the game-winning goal with 1-minutes, 16-seconds left in the extra period to take a 5-4 win at Hobbs Ice Center Jan. 31, 2020. The Blue Devils scored three goals in the second period, but Eau Claire made it a one-goal game heading into the break after Andrew McGlynn, with assists by Jake Bresser and Jon Richards, scored 75 seconds before the second intermission. Raphael Gosselin gave Stout a 4-3 lead with 6:44 left in the third period, on an assist by Noah Carson. The Blugolds tied the game with an extra attacker on the ice when Bresser scored his second goal of the night with 48 seconds left in regulation. Cole Paskus gave the Blugolds the win, with assists by Bresser and Adam Parsells. Following a scoreless first period, the Blue Devils drew first blood when Evan Butcher scored his third goal of the season, scoring 52 seconds into the second period with an assist by Alec Skar. The Blugolds knotted the score about seven minutes later when Bresser, the league's second-leading goal scorer, lit the lamp at 8:17 for his first goal of the night Connor Chambers, with an assist by Adam Kresl, grabbed the lead back for the Blue Devils, scoring his third goal of the season and his second power play goal at 15:58 of the second. The Blue Devils' piled on in the period when Konnar Dechaine, again on the power play, scored at 16:37 for his eighth goal of the season and his third power play goal. - UW-Eau Claire scored in every period, took advantage of a number of power play opportunities and defeated UW-Stout, 4-0, Feb. 1, 2020, at Hobbs Ice Center. The third-ranked Blugolds' Andrew McGlynn scored twice, scoring the opening goal at 6:54 of the first period, then scored the final goal of the game on the power play at 14:36 of the final period. In the second period, Eau Claire got goals from Jon Richards and Nick Techel, with Techel's goal coming on the power play. - 2020-21: Goalie Zach Cloutier was selected as the Kwik Trip/WIAC Athlete of the Week and The Heights/UW-Stout Athlete of the Week.
- 2019-20: Goalie Brennan Kitchen, defenseman Connor Chambers and forward Logan Nelson earned WIAC honorable mention honors. Lucas Carroll was selected to the all-sportsmanship team...Brennan Kitchen was selected as the WIAC hockey athlete of the week after stopping 55 shots in a 4-0 shutout over Northland College, Jan. 25. On the weekend, Kitchen had 88 total saves...After scoring three goals and an assist over the weekend against Bethel University and Hamline University, Konnar Dechaine was selected as the UW-Stout athlete of the week, Jan. 13…After scoring two goals each night in a loss to UW-Stevens Point and a win over UW-Superior, Logan Nelson was selected as the WIAC Athlete of the Week.
UW-STOUT COACH MIKE MACDONALD
- The 2020-21 season marks Mike MacDonald's (3-1-0, 3-1-0) first season as the Blue Devils' head coach.
- Before coming to Stout, MacDonald coached four seasons at Curry College, near Boston, Mass. Prior to joining Curry, he spent a year as an assistant coach at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston.
- MacDonald graduated from the SUNY Geneseo with a degree in Business Administration in 2007. During his time at Geneseo, the team posted a record of 67-33-11, winning the SUNYAC Championship in 2005 and 2006. Over his collegiate career, MacDonald appeared in 109 games and is among the school's all-time leaders in goals (61) and points (120).
- MacDonald played six seasons professionally. He began his professional career in the Central Hockey League, spending one season each with the Odessa Jackalopes and New Mexico Scorpions. The following four seasons he played primarily for the Southern Professional Hockey League's Huntsville Havoc. While there he served as the team's captain for three seasons. In 2010 he scored the game-winning goal to give Huntsville its first ever SPHL Championship. Over his career, MacDonald appeared in 338 professional games with 213 points on 84 goals and 129 assists.
- MacDonald is a native of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia.
UW-EAU CLAIRE'S MATT LOEN
- Matt Loen (214-122-29) enters his 14th season as head coach for the men's ice hockey team in 2020-21 at UW-Eau Claire. Last season Loen led the Blugolds to the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) tournament championship victory and their first NCAA Tournament bid, since 2013. Due to COVID-19, the NCAA canceled all winter championships taking place in the spring of 2020. In 2017-18, he was named WIAC Co-Coach of the Year, an honor he has earned six times in the last nine years. He also received the honor in 2009-10, 2010-11, 2012-13, 2014-15 and 2016-17. In 2012-2013, Loen and the Blugolds captured the NCAA Division III National Championship in Lake Placid, New York. That year, Loen was named the USCHO and D3Hockey.com National Coach of the Year. The Blugolds also won the NCHA and WIAC Conference Championships. Loen ranks 6th on the all-time WIAC Coaches Wins List. He has also been named NCHA Coach of the Year in 2011 and 2013. Loen is the school's all-time leader in wins with an overall record 190-117-27. Under Loen, a number of Blugolds have earned post-season honors. He coached 10 first team All-NCHA and 12 NCHA honorable mentions recipients, with a total of 34 NCHA All-Academic. In the WIAC he has coached 27 first team All-WIAC and 23 honorable mentions and three WIAC Scholar-Athlete. He has coached five All-Americans and one Academic All-American.
THE CONFERENCE:
LENDING AN ASSIST: Goalie Evan Bisek recorded an assist against Marian University, Nov. 2, 2019...Two different Stout goalies earned assists during the 2015-16 season. Spencer Viele was awarded an assist Nov. 6 against Bethel University, then added a second assist Jan. 29 at UW-Superior and Chase Hollander earned an assist Nov. 21, 2015, against Concordia. The three helpers mark the first time two UW-Stout goalies have gotten an assist in the same year since the team returned to varsity status 20 years ago...When Spencer Viele was awarded an assist against Bethel University, Nov. 6, 2015, he was not the first Stout goalie, and won't be the last, to get an assist. Since the Blue Devil hockey program returned to varsity play during the 1996-97 season, seven goalies have earned at least one assist. Chase Hollander was awarded an assist for his pass as Danny Ray scored against UW-Superior, Jan. 17, 2015. Corey Koop did it during the 2013-14 season, Jeff Stone during the 2008-09 season, and Jake Schuman during the 2004-05 season each recorded an assist. Jeff Dotson did it in 2000-01 as a freshman, then did it again as a senior in 2003-04. Kelly Elde did it twice during the 1996-97 season.

STOUT'S RANKED HISTORY: The Blue Devils returned to the USCHO.com poll Nov. 19, 2018 and received a single vote in the Dec. 3 rankings before dropping out...the last time the Blue Devils were mentioned was with one vote in the Oct. 31, 2016 poll...The last time Stout was mentioned was Jan. 18, 2016...The Blue Devils returned to the USCHO.com Division III poll, Jan. 18, 2016, after nearly a four year hiatus, receiving five votes. A tie and two straight losses the following week dropped the Blue Devils out of the poll. Stout finished the 2008-09 season as the second ranked team in the USCHO.com poll. With the exception of the Nov. 17, 2008, USCHO.com poll, Stout had been ranked in the top 15 since the Nov. 13, 2006, poll. Stout made their first appearance in the poll on Nov. 27, 2000, when they received one vote, then moved up to 10th the following week. The 2008-09 season ending poll matched Stout's previous high mark of second in the Jan. 29, 2007, poll. Stout opened the 2009-10 season ranked third, their highest-ever season-opening ranking, but fell out of the polls midway through the season and returned to the top 15, Nov. 22, 2010. Stout was in the 2011-12 USCHO.com poll early in the season, dropped out, returned again, but dropped out. Stout returned to the poll after a win over top-ranked St. Norbert, Jan. 18, 2012, garnering eight votes in the Jan. 21, 2012, poll, effectively ranking the Blue Devils 19th. HOME ICE: The Dunn County Board in 2015 approved renaming the Dunn County Ice Arena the Fanetti Community Center in recognition of Marilyn Fanetti's contribution to fundraising efforts undertaken by the Menomonie Youth Hockey Association to remodel and add to the arena at the Dunn County Recreation Park. Fanetti donated $370,000 to the project and asked that the hockey arena and new community room be named for her family.
