THE COACHES:
UW-STOUT:
- Hannah Iverson (38-31) is in her fourth year in 2021-22Â as the head coach of the Blue Devils. (started the 2021-22 season at 35-27)
- Prior to becoming the Blue Devils' head coach, Iverson was the director of player development for women's basketball at NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay, a position she began in October, 2016. As well as working directly with the team, Iverson managed the program's operating budget, coordinated team travel, co-directed summer camps and clinics and handled all aspects of team film. She assisted in the set-up of on-campus recruiting and coordinating official and unofficial visits for potential recruits. Iverson held a similar position - director of basketball operations - at the University of Illinois from 2014-16.
- Iverson spent two years at NAIA member Ashford University in Clinton, Iowa, as an assistant women's basketball coach for the 2012-14 school years. Iverson was in charge of guard development in a season where she helped the Saints to the 2014 Association of Independent Institutions tournament championship, earning Ashford a berth in the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Championship tournament, the first conference title and appearance in the NAIA D-II tournament in Saints history.
- A member of the UW-Green Bay women's basketball team from 2008-12, playing as Hannah Quilling, Iverson finished her career in the top 10 for games played as the Phoenix posted a 122-13 record over her four years. The team was 68-4 in Horizon League play and advanced to the NCAA Division I tournament four times, including one trip to the Sweet 16. She led the Horizon League in assist-to-turnover ratio in 2011-12, was sixth in steals per game and ninth in assists per game. She was also named to the Horizon League Honor Roll, earned the UW-Green Bay Chancellor's Leadership Medallion, was a two-time recipient of the UW-Green Bay University Leadership Award and the Patricia Hinckley Scholarship, and won the JoAnne Jennings Award in 2012.
- Iverson has gotten to 30 career wins faster than any other Blue Devil basketball coach, men or women. Iverson reached her 30th win in 42 games. Mark Thomas needed to turn around a women's basketball program that had won only two games the previous two seasons before he arrived. Thomas needed 75 games to reach 30 wins, but once he did, he kept building and became the winningest basketball coach in Blue Devil history, both men and women. On the men's side, Ray Johnson needed 59 games to reach 30 wins. Dewey Mintz needed 67 games to reach 30, John Muraski needed 63 and Eddie Andrist needed 59 games.
UNIVERSITY OF DUBUQUE COACH
- Justin Smith was promoted to Head Coach in the spring of 2020 after spending three seasons as an assistant. A native of Waukee, Iowa, Smith is a 2007 graduate of University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where he also began his coaching career as the Assistant Girl's Basketball Coach at Janesville High School for two seasons. Smith's coaching philosophy is building positive relationships and a team first culture which is centered around hard-work, communication, and trust.
- Smith had to battle the uncertainty of COVID-19 in his first season at the helm for the Spartans. During an abbreviated season with many cancellations across the country, the Spartans were able to play all of their games, going 6-7 overall. Their 5-3 record in conference play gave the Spartans the fifth seed in the American Rivers Conference Tournament, the highest seed since 2015.
- Smith has 12 years of coaching experience at the high school and youth levels. Prior to UD, Smith was the Head Girl's Basketball Coach at Hempstead High School in Dubuque, Iowa from 2012-2017. During his time at Hempstead, Smith guided Hempstead to three city titles, a Jimmy V. Classic Tournament Championship in 2013, and posted the second most wins in a season in school history twice. He left Hempstead with the second best winning percentage in school history.Â
- Smith was honored in 2018 for his heroic efforts in stopping a charter bus when the driver had a medical issue and passed out while driving. Smith pulled the driver out of the seat and was able to stop the bus after hitting the guardrail. Justin was recognized as Iowa's 2018 "citizen hero" during halftime of the Hy-Vee Heroes Game, Nov. 23, 2018 when the Iowa Hawkeyes played the Nebraska Cornhuskers at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, Iowa.Â

STOUT IN THE WIAC TOURNAMENT: (updated March 2, 2021)Â UW-Stout has qualified to the WIAC Championship tournament 17 times and overall is 20-13. Stout is 12-5Â in the first round (.706Â winning percentage) 4-8 in the semi-finals (.333) and 4-0 in the finals (1.000). The Blue Devils earned the third seed in the East Division in 2021 and played UW-Whitewater, losing 66-49, only the second time Blue Devils and the Warhawks have faced off in the WIAC tournament. The teams met in the first round of the 2006 tournament, a tournament Stout would go on to win. But the eighth-seeded Warhawks gave Stout the closest game in that tournament, a decision Stout took 80-76 in Johnson Fieldhouse, Feb. 20, 2006. The Blue Devils earned the fifth seed in the 2020 WIAC tournament for only the second time in the tournament's history, and Stout lost 68-60 to UW-Oshkosh in 2020 and lost 78-66 to UW-River Falls in 2001 as the fifth seed. Last year was only the second time Stout and Oshkosh met in the first round, with Stout winning, 71-54, during the 2006-07 season in Menomonie and Oshkosh taking a 68-60 decision in Oshkosh during the 2019-20 season. The teams have met twice in the second round, with Oshkosh taking both contests, winning 95-45 in 1999 and 61-58 in last year's second round game. The teams met both times in the championship game, with Stout taking both title games, 90-71, in 2002, and 68-53, in 2005. This is the first time the teams have met in back-to-back tournaments.
Previous to the 2018-19 season, Stout had not participated in the WIAC post-season tournament since the 2015-16 season when they traveled to UW-Stevens Point and lost 55-44 in a first round game. Last season, the Blue Devils hosted a first-round playoff game and defeated UW-Platteville, 81-69, to advance to the second round, then lost at UW-Oshkosh, 61-58. Before last season, Stout had not won a WIAC post-season game since they defeated UW-River Falls, 86-70, in a first round game. Stout has not won two or more games in a conference tournament since winning the tournament during the 2006-07 season. | WIAC Tournament History
