Women's Basketball Preview: Blue Devils open doubleheader with Finlandia Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (5-4, 1-1 WIAC) will take on Finlandia University (4-6) Tuesday, Dec. 21 at 10:30 a.m. The game is part of a doubleheader with the men's program and is Kids Days. Elementary schools around the Menomonie community will tune into the games through the Blue Devils' streaming network. 

The Blue Devils take a short break for the holidays and return to action by traveling to two NACC schools between Christmas and New Year's, and then make-up a game with Gustavus Adolpus College. Stout will be at Aurora University, Tuesday, Dec. 28 for a 5 p.m. tip-off, then will be at Rockford University, Thursday, Dec. 30 at 5 p.m. Stout will make-up a game at Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter, Minn., Sunday, Jan. 2 at 2 p.m.

Do not park in Lot 4, which is a reserved lot for students that live in the residence halls. Campus-wide parking policies for Tuesday's game with Finlandia will be enforced.

THE 2021-22 BLUE DEVILS:
  • Anna Mutch leads the Blue Devils in scoring, averaging 12.9 points per contest. The co-newcomer of the year in the WIAC last season, Mutch is pulling down a team-best 7.2 rebounds per contest. Amanda Giesen is averaging 10.9 points per game and Reagan Sorensen jumps up to 8.8 points per game after her 25 points game against Bethany Lutheran. Sam Schaeffer and Lizzy Olsem are averaging 8.7 and 8.0 points, respectively. Mutch, Giesen, and Lauren Arenz all have over 20 assists with Arenz leading the way with 25.
  • Mutch is eighth in the conference in scoring, third in rebounding and sixth in assists (2.7 a/g). Arenz is fourth with 2.9 assists per game. Giesen is tied for ninth in assists (2.4 a/g)
  • Stout is out-scoring their opponents, 71.8-69.6 while shooting 46-percent from the field (236 for 510) and 34-percent from deep (38 for 112)

AN OVERALL LOOK AT UW-STOUT:
  • The Blue Devils return two players who averaged in double figures last season - Anna Mutch (10.6) and Haylee Yaeger (10.9).
  • Anna Mutch was an honorable mention selection to the All-WIAC team and was named the WIAC newcomer of the year. Anna Mutch opened the season with a bang, recording a double-double in the season opener, tallying 14 points and 12 rebounds. Mutch finished third in the WIAC in rebounds, averaging 7.1 boards. Mutch was 14th in the league in scoring (10.6). 
  • The Blue Devils return nine letterwinners from last season. Among those letterwinners are three starters - Lizzy Olsem, Haley Yaeger and Anna Mutch
  • The Blue Devils have one senior (Olsem), three juniors, five sophomores and seven freshmen.
  • Last season, Haylee Yaeger scored in double-digits in four of nine games, and notched a career-best 20 points in the first game with La Crosse and made it a double-double with 10 rebounds, her second career double-double. Yaeger led the team in scoring with 10.9 points and was second on the team in rebounds with 5.4.
  • Anna Mutch scored a collegiate-high 14 points in season opener vs. UW-River Falls, Feb. 3 and also scored her first double-double with 12 rebounds against the Falcons. Mutch matched her 14 points against UW-La Crosse, Feb. 17. Mutch was the team leader in rebounds, averaging 7.1 rebounds. Mutch finished third in the league in rebounds, 14th in scoring - but first among all freshmen - 10th in field goal percentage (31-69, .449), sixth in free throw percentage (31-40, .775), third in steals (15, 1.67/game), and 12th in minutes played (28.4).
  • The Blue Devils return 73.7 percent of their scoring from last year, returning 47.4 points. As a team, Stout averaged 64.2 points per contest and gave up 75.6. 
  • The Blue Devils opened last season by sweeping UW-River Falls, then lost the next seven games.

CONFERENCE STANDINGS:
  • The Blue Devils were voted to finish sixth in a WIAC 2021-22 preseason poll conducted by conference coaches and sports information directors. STOUT LAST TIME OUT:
  • UW-Stout overcame a 12-point deficit in the third period and freshman Raegan Sorensen helped the Blue Devils run past Bethany Lutheran College, 76-63, Dec. 18,  Trailing 40-28 a couple minutes into the third period, Stout (5-4) outscored the Vikings - who were hosting their first home game of the season after 10 road games to open the season - 19-7 in the third quarter, scoring the first seven points of the quarter  and went on an 18-2 run. The Blue Devils tied the score at 43 apiece on a lay-up off a steal by Sorensen with 1:59 left in the third period, a play that would ignite Sorensen for the rest of the game.  Anna Mutch gave Stout the lead seconds later and Stout never trailed the rest of the way. Sorensen scored seven points in the first half, but starting when she tied the game, went on to finish the game with a career-best 25 points, scoring 18 second half points and 14 in the fourth quarter alone. Stout would build a 17-point lead over the Vikings (7-4) and outscored their host 29-19 in the final quarter. Sorensen would collect her first collegiate double-double, tallying 10 rebounds to go with her game-high 25 points. Sorensen was 10 of 17 from the field, 3 of 4 from 3-point range and 2 of 3 from the line. Sorensen completed her all-around game with five assists and three steals. The last time a Stout player scored 25 or more points was Jan. 29, 2020, when Amber Fabeck dropped 28 points on UW-Eau Claire. Mutch scored 14 points, hitting only 3 of 11 from the field, but drained 8 of 14 free throws. Sidney Jahr scored nine points for the Blue Devils. Stout was 28 of 60 from the field, 7 of 17 from 3-point range and 13 of 21 from the free throw line. Hannah Geistfeld scored 22 points for the Vikings and Taryn Christiansen had 15 points.  |  Game Story and Statistics

  • The Lions are led by Bailey Froberg and Harlee Froberg. Bailey Froberg is the team's leading scorer with 13.3 points per game and 3.9 rebounds. Hailey Froberg is leading the team in rebounding with 6.4 boards per game and also 6.2 points. Another familiar face for the Lions is Katie Lundeen, who is averaging a steady 11.7 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.
  • Froberg, who played at Gogebic Community College, has now scored 1708 points in her collegiate career.

THE LIONS LAST TIME OUT

  •  The Lions defeated Martin Luther College, 69-50, Dec. 19 in Wisconsin Dells. Bailey Froberg tossed in 23 points, hitting 8 of 15 from floor and dropping in three 3-points and all four free throws. Katie Lundeen added 15 points. Carsyn Osterman, who spent one year with the Blue Devils, pulled down 13 rebounds and added eight assists. Osterman saw action in 23 games for the Blue Devils during the 2017-18 season coming off the bench.

  • The last time these two teams met was back in the 2007-08 season where Stout pulled out a huge victory winning 103-45. Finlandia scored an 86-84 overtime win over the Blue Devils Dec. 16, 2006 in Hancock, Mich.

THE COACHES:
UW-STOUT:

  • Hannah Iverson (40-31) is in her fourth year in 2021-22 as the head coach of the Blue Devils. 
  • Prior to becoming the Blue Devils' head coach, Iverson was the director of player development for women's basketball at NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay, a position she began in October, 2016. As well as working directly with the team, Iverson managed the program's operating budget, coordinated team travel, co-directed summer camps and clinics and handled all aspects of team film. She assisted in the set-up of on-campus recruiting and coordinating official and unofficial visits for potential recruits. Iverson held a similar position - director of basketball operations - at the University of Illinois from 2014-16.
  • Iverson spent two years at NAIA member Ashford University in Clinton, Iowa, as an assistant women's basketball coach for the 2012-14 school years. Iverson was in charge of guard development in a season where she helped the Saints to the 2014 Association of Independent Institutions tournament championship, earning Ashford a berth in the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Championship tournament, the first conference title and appearance in the NAIA D-II tournament in Saints history.
  • A member of the UW-Green Bay women's basketball team from 2008-12, playing as Hannah Quilling, Iverson finished her career in the top 10 for games played as the Phoenix posted a 122-13 record over her four years. The team was 68-4 in Horizon League play and advanced to the NCAA Division I tournament four times, including one trip to the Sweet 16. She led the Horizon League in assist-to-turnover ratio in 2011-12, was sixth in steals per game and ninth in assists per game. She was also named to the Horizon League Honor Roll, earned the UW-Green Bay Chancellor's Leadership Medallion, was a two-time recipient of the UW-Green Bay University Leadership Award and the Patricia Hinckley Scholarship, and won the JoAnne Jennings Award in 2012.
  • Iverson has gotten to 30 career wins faster than any other Blue Devil basketball coach, men or women. Iverson reached her 30th win in 42 games. Mark Thomas needed to turn around a women's basketball program that had won only two games the previous two seasons before he arrived. Thomas needed 75 games to reach 30 wins, but once he did, he kept building and became the winningest basketball coach in Blue Devil history, both men and women. On the men's side, Ray Johnson needed 59 games to reach 30 wins. Dewey Mintz needed 67 games to reach 30, John Muraski needed 63 and Eddie Andrist needed 59 games.

FINLANDIA UNIVERSITY COACH MARIAH DUNHAM

  • Mariah Dunham is in her fourth season as head coach of the Finlandia University women's basketball team.  She is also the Senior Women's Administrator and Assistant A.D. for Wellness.  Dunham is 28-30.
  • Over the last two seasons, Finlandia has gone 21-12 and won the 2019-20 ACAA Championship, the first conference title in program history.  The Lions enter the 2021-22 season with a school record 15-game home winning streak.
  • Dunham has coached three all-conference, 20 conference all-academic and three conference all-tournament selection.  In addition she had the 2018-19 ACAA Rookie of the Year (Katie Lundeen) and the 2019-20 ACAA Tournament MVP (Carsyn Osterman).
  • Dunham comes to Finlandia after two years with AAU Level UP Express Basketball.  She started the program in March, 2017 with two teams (23 athletes) and grew it to five teams (45) athletes in 2018.
  • Dunham was a four-year starter at Watertown High School (Wis.).  She helped the Goslings win four regional championships and as a sophomore they reached the Division I State Championship game.  Dunham was A.P. State Player of the Year as a senior and is the school's all-time leading scorer with 1684 points.
  • Dunham earned three letters as a student-athlete at the University of Wisconsin.  As a freshman she helped the Badgers reach the WNIT championship game.
  • Dunham played her senior year at Northern Michigan University.  She averaged 14.1 points and 5.2 rebounds a game and helped the Wildcats advance to the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Semi-Finals. Dunham was a GLIAC second team and earned a B.S. in Communication Studies.
  • Following graduation, Dunham was a volunteer coach at Finlandia as well as coaching girl's and boy's basketball at Baraga High School (Mich.). She was an assistant coach at Lake Superior State (2013-14) and Northern Michigan (2014-16).  During Dunham's tenure at NMU, the Wildcats qualified for the GLIAC Tournament both years


CONFERENCE: UW-Stout is a member of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-Eau Claire. UW-Oshkosh, UW-La Crosse, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Platteville, UW-River Falls, and UW-Whitewater. The Blue Devils were picked to finish sixth in a preseason poll conducted by WIAC coaches and sports information directors. UW-Oshkosh was tabbed to win the league. Whitewater was picked second, Eau Claire third, La Crosse fourth, Stevens Point fifth, Platteville seventh and River Falls eighth. 

UP NEXT:  The Blue Devils take a short break for the holidays and return to action by traveling to two NACC schools between Christmas and New Year's. Stout will be at Aurora University, Tuesday, Dec. 28 for a 5 p.m. tip-off, then will be at Rockford University, Thursday, Dec. 30 at 5 p.m. Stout will make-up a game at Gustavus Adolphus College Sunday, Jan. 2 at 2 p.m.

With the new year, Stout will jump into conference play the rest of the season and will be at UW-La Crosse, Wednesday, Jan. 5 at 7 p.m., then return home Saturday, Jan. 8, to host UW-Platteville at 3 p.m.
