MENOMONIE (December 15, 2021) - Now that everyone in attendance at the UW-Stout/Greenville University men's basketball game Monday, Dec. 13, has had a chance to catch their breath, let's take a look at the records that fell...or nearly fell. The Blue Devils won the high-paced contest, 125-119.
The first and most obvious record to fall was the single game scoring record. The Blue Devils surpassed the previous record of 124 points when
Brody Fox stepped to the free throw line with Stout holding a 123-119 lead with 15 seconds remaining in the game. Fox tied the school record with his first free throw, then broke the team record with the back-end free throw. The 124 point total was set the first time against Valley City State, Dec. 11, 1971, in a 124-75 win and the point total was matched in a 124-70 win over Marian College, Jan. 24, 1986.
It was appropriate that Fox, the 6-4 sophomore forward from Mahtomedi, Minn., would have the honors of breaking the team school record. Fox would finish the game with 42 points, not only a career-best, but one point short of the school individual game record of 43 points set by Chris Korba, Dec. 7, 1991. Fox finished the game with career-best marks of points (42), rebounds (13) and assists (5). Fox scored 17 points in the first half, 25 in the second half. Fox, who has come off the bench in all 10 games, saw his scoring average jump up more than three points. Fox was averaging 6.1 points per game, but saw his average jump to 9.7 points after the Greenville game. Fox came into Monday's game with 55 total points for the season and left with 97 points.
The teams combined for a school record 244 total points by two opponents, breaking a record of 221 points set Feb. 14, 1987 when UW-Oshkosh defeated the Blue Devils, 111-110. The teams combined for a two-team record of most field goals by two teams with 90. Stout drained 46 field goals and Greenville 44. The Panthers' 44 field goals made is second by a Stout opponent. Platteville made 46 field goals in a 122-89 Platteville victory Jan. 11, 1963. (The 122 points scored by Platteville that day is the most ever scored by a Stout opponent. Greenville's 119 points is the second-most allowed.)
Both the individual and team assist records remained intact, barely.
Lovell Williams dished off 13 assists, second only to Brian Ellingson's record 14 assists in an 89-67 win over Northland College at the Blue Devils' Red Cedar Classic in December, 1986. As a team, Stout handed off 36 assists, just shy of the 37 assists in the 124-70 win over Marian College in 1986.
Six players finished in double figures - Fox (42),
Drew Scott (16),
Armani Tinsley (16), Williams (14),
Nick Jungel (14) and
Jon Ciriacks (11). Fox recorded his first collegiate double-double (42 pts, 13 rbs) as did Williams (14 pts, 13 assists). Williams just missed a triple double with nine rebounds.
