Late interceptions spoil Blue Devils' chance for comeback win over Pioneers

PLATTEVILLE (November 13, 2021) - Two interceptions by UW-Platteville in the waning minutes of the game prevented a UW-Stout comeback and the Pioneers took the win, 35-28, Saturday.

Sean Borgerding, who had thrown only six interceptions in the first nine games, was picked off twice in the final 3:32 of the game. With score tied at 28-28, Borgerding was intercepted at 3:32 deep in Stout territory when the ball went off his receivers arms. Two minutes later the Pioneers scored with 1:46 left when Evan Gates scored from the 1 yard line with 1:48 left

On Stout's next drive, the Blue Devils made it to near midfield and the drive looked promising, but Borgerding was intercepted with a pair of Platteville ((4-6, 3-4 WIAC) players hanging on him as he attempted to unload the ball and the Pioneers ran out the clock.

Stout trailed 21-14 at halftime, but the Blue Devils tied the score when Borgerding hit Levy Hamer for a 14-yard scoring play at 11:13 of the third quarter.

In first half, the Blue Devils lit it up to start the game when Borgerding hit Hamer for a 41-yard pass to the Platteville 30-yard line. A few plays later, Pomietlo carried the ball in from yards out to give Stout the 7-0 lead at 12:20 of the first quarter.

The Pioneers answered back with back-to-back touchdown pass from Colin Schuetz to Austin Gay. The pair connected for a 20-yard TD at 7:13 to tie the score, then repeated at 2:07 on a 19-yard play to go up 14-7.

Stout tied the game at 11:44 of the second quarter when Borgerding hooked up with Hamer for a 20-yard TD pass.

Platteville scored again to take the lead 21-14 with 3:24 left in the half when Schuetz hit Brandt Stare for an 8-yard touchdown.

The Blue Devils threatened to tie the game just before halftime, getting as close as the Platteville 1-yard line, but could not get into the end zone.

Hamer had 91 receiving yards on three catches in the first half. Hamer finished with seven catches for 141 yards and two TDs. Borgerding completed 19 of 37 passes for 290 yards and three TDs. Matt Pomietlo had a career day, carrying the ball 26 times for 154 yards, his first collegiate 100-yard game. Parker Fossum had 98 yards receiving on eight catches.

The Blue Devils tallied 491 total yards of offense to Platteville's 350 yards. Stout threw the ball for 290 yards and ran for 201 yards. The Pioneers threw the ball for 323 yards and ran for 27. Schuetz was 29 of 43 for 323 yards and four TDs. Stare caught 12 catches for 109 yards.  Ben Wilson caught five passes for 93 yards and Austin Guy had six catches for 74 yards.
