THIS WEEK'S GAME: The Blue Devils (5-4, 2-4 WIAC) will conclude the regular season when they travel to UW-Platteville (3-6, 2-4 WIAC), Saturday, Nov. 13 for a 2 p.m. kickoff. Stout will try to shake off a three game losing streak to end the season. The teams are the two top passing teams in the WIAC and rank high in the NCAA Division III. Nationally, Platteville ranks sixth in passing, while Stout is 21st. Stout QB Sean Borderding is 12th nationally in passing TDs (26), while Platteville's Cole Schuetz is 22nd (24). Borgerding is 15th nationally in passing yardage (2591) and Schuetz is 5th (2961). Borgerding is also 19th in the NCAA in points responsible for (176), 22nd in points responsible per game (19.6) and 44th in passing yards/completition (13.9).

LAST TIME OUT: UW-STOUT: Stout trailed 36-14 heading into the fourth quarter against UW-River Falls, but Stout's offense came to life in the fourth quarter, scoring three TDs. But alas, the Falcons matched each of Stout's touchdowns in the final quarter and River Falls took a 57-35 win back home. |

LAST TIME OUT: UW-PLATTEVILLE: The Pioneers defeated UW-Eau Claire in a high-scoring affair, 55-28, at Carson Park in Eau Claire Nov. 6. Platteville totaled 503 yards of total offense which included 420 yards through the air. Colin Schuetz threw for 407 yards and four touchdowns, his seventh game of at least 300 yards passing this season. Schuetz also used his legs in the red zone to run for two more touchdowns. Tyler Lamer led the Pioneers with 45 yards on 10 carries including a touchdown while Austin Guy led all receivers with 12 catches for 158 yards and two touchdowns. Jimmy Durocher had 10 receptions for 85 yards and a touchdown, both career highs. Ben Wilson and WR Jacob Remsza each hit paydirt through the air as well. |

WHEN STOUT AND PLATTEVILLE LAST MET: UW-Stout was looking for their first conference win at UW-Platteville Oct. 19, 2019, but ended coming short of the feat. On the Pioneer's homecoming weekend, Platteville upended UW-Stout, 33-27.
Sean Borgerding finished with 334 yards through the air and a career high, four touchdowns.
Levy Hamer led Stout in receiving with 118 yards on three receptions and a touchdown. Kevion McDonald finished with 117 yards on eight catches and a touchdown.
Tyler Seymour scored twice on the day and collected 85 yards on four receptions and also completed a 45-yard pass to set up his own 9-yard TD on the next play. On the Pioneer side, Colin Schuetz ended with 348 yards through the air with two touchdowns. Wyatt Thompson led Platteville in rushing with 125 yards and a touchdown, and Tyler Knigge finished with 97 yards on eight receptions, also scoring a touchdown. |

A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS
THE PASSING GAME: Sean Borgerding continues his streak, but this team threw for a career-best five touchdowns against UW-River Falls, raising his total to 26 touchdowns for the 2021 the season. Borgerding is atop the WIAC QBs in touchdowns thrown. He is second in most passing yards and average passing yards per game. Borgerding has completed 186 of his 290 passes, picking up 2591 yards and 26 touchdowns for the season. Leading a strong receiving corps is
Levy Hamer, who has 53 catches for 822 yards and 10 touchdowns. Hamer is tied for first in receiving yards with UW-Platteville's Austin Guy and tied for first in receiving touchdowns in the WIAC with two others.
Parker Fossum and
Arthur Cox round out Borgerding's favorite targets. Fossum has 496 yards on 38 catches and three touchdowns while Cox has 603 yards on 40 catches and six touchdowns.

THE RUNNING GAME: With Stout excelling through the air, the running backs have worked to capitalize on the chances they get. Freshmen
Matt Pomietlo has taken up the Blue Devils' running game after leading rusher
Rayshawn Graham was injured against UW-Eau Claire. Graham was leading the WIAC with 543 yards and nine touchdowns on only 89 carries in the six games he appeared in. Pomietlo has picked up 468 yards and three touchdowns on 104 rushes. Freshman
Carter Fonger also has recorded two touchdowns and 58 yards on only 17 carries. QB
Sean Borgerding has started using his legs more in the later half of the season, scoring two touchdowns. Borgerding was Stout's 2019 leading rusher, and in the past four games he has had 98 positive yards rushing and two rushing touchdowns.
TOTAL OFFENSE: Stout is averaging 423.0 yards of total offense, 293.0 passing, 130.0 rushing.
DEFENSE: On the defensive side of the ball, the Blue Devils are lead by defensive back
Cannon Griner, who has recorded a WIAC best 48 solo tackles, and has a total of 85 tackles, another WIAC best. Griner also also second of the WIAC for interceptions (4) and pass breakups (7).
Mason Priebe joins Griner with his own two interceptions.
Carson Strong,
Gervase Thompson,
Haydon Miller, and
Dylan Larrabee have also taken the ball back each with an interception. This tight pass defense has given time for Stout's linebackers and d-line to get to the opposing QB.
Ethan Olson and
Riley Crotteau each have 2.5 sacks and
Haydon Miller has 2.0. The Blue Devil's defense has also thrived this season with getting the ball back to the offense. They have recorded 14 takeaways (10 interceptions and four fumble recoveries). The Blue Devils are allowing 29.9 points per game with 370.5 yards of offense per game, 186.8 yards rushing and 216.6 yards passing.
CLIMBING THE LADDER: With one game left in his third season,
Levy Hamer has locked up the second spot in UW-Stout's all-time receiving list. WR Hamer passed second place Hall of Famer Mark Rothwell with his 90-yard performance against UW-Stevens Point on October 16. Hamer has 2673 yards and 24 touchdowns on 171 catches in his three years at Stout. He will have his senior year to catch leading Stout receiver Scott Frederickson (1986-89) who had 3390 yards receiving in his time at Stout. Hamer will only need 717 more yards in this last game and all of next season to pass Frederickson. Hamer also broke into the top 15 for all time Stout scorers and is 12th with 148 total points. QB
Sean Borgerding is also on track to top UW-Stout's all-time passing list. QB
Sean Borgerding moved up to third place after throwing for 341 yards against UW-La Crosse on October 23. Borgerding has 7123 yards and 64 touchdowns on 522 completions. Borgerding will now have his eyes set on Matt Bunyan (1995-98) who sits in Stout's second all-time passing spot with 8562 yards behind Tim Peterson (1986-89), who threw for 8881 yards. Borgerding only needs 1493 more yards in this last game and his senior season to pass Bunyan. Borgerding also has passed Peterson in all-time Stout passing touchdowns. Peterson had 59 passing TDs. Next on the list is Matt Bunyan with 85 touchdowns. Others of note are
Rayshawn Graham, who is currently 14th on the UW-Stout all-time rushing list (1568), and
Parker Fossum, who is in 21st for all-time receiving yards (1181).
THE KICKING GAME: Freshman
Jack Meyer has been the leg for Stout's special teams. Meyer is seven for 11 on field goal attempts, with a long of 52. Meyer had a 51 yard field goal at UW-Eau Claire and was selected the WIAC special teams player of that week. Meyer also has shown off his strength with punting, averaging 37.6 yards per boot, with a long of 70 yards, coming at Whitewater on Oct. 2. The PATs have been taken care of by
Luke Cool as he has nailed 18 of 21 PATs. Meyer had the chance to break the school record with a 57-yard field goal against UW-Stevens Point on Oct. 16, but the ball fell just a few yards short. Meyer did connect on a collegiate-best 52-yard field goal against St. Norbert in September, the longest kick among conference players and is tied in the NCAA Division III as the second-longest field goal of the season. Meyer is tied with Wheaton (Ill) Tommy Gallagher for second. Gettysburg's Doug Cummings has kicked a 55-yard field. Meyer's 51-yard kick is the fourth-longest kick of the season in Division III. The longest kick of the season across the NCAA is a 59-yard kick by Gino Garcia of Houston Baptist, affiliated with the FCS Division.
PRESEASON POLLS: The Blue Devils
finished fifth in the competitive WIAC in 2019 and according to a preseason poll by WIAC football coaches and sports information directors, the Blue Devils are picked to finish fifth in 2021
. UW-Whitewater is picked to finish first, UW-Oshkosh second, UW-Platteville third, UW-La Crosse fourth, UW-Stout fifth, UW-Stevens Point sixth, UW-Eau Claire seventh and UW-River Falls eighth.
WHO'S WHO: PLATTEVILLE:The Pioneers were picked to finish third in a preseason conference poll, but the Pioneers are now barely hanging on sixth place. The Pioneers have been known as a passing team over the past several years and that is remaining true again this season. The team's leading rusher Tyler Lamer has 330 rushing yards and four touchdowns. As a team they are eighth in rushing with 560 total rushing yards. The lack of rushing yards comes from the amount of pass plays they run, as they lead the WIAC with 3128 passing yards. QB Colin Schuetz leads the WIAC with 2992 passing yards. Schuetz has 24 touchdowns on the season, a majority of those to receivers Austin Guy and Brandt Stare. Guy has 822 yards and is tied with Stout's own Levy Hamer at the top of the WIAC. Stare has 616 yards, as well as seven touchdowns with Guy. On the defensive end of the ball, the Pioneers are anchored by Sam Smith who has 43 solo tackles, which is the second most in the WIAC. Tyler Bacon has been active in the backfield, with seven solo tackles for a loss as well as 4.5 sacks. RANKED OPPONENTS: The WIAC is filled with nationally ranked opponents, as UW-Whitewater holds on to their third rank in the latest D3football.com Top 25 poll. UW-Whitewater opened the season ranked fourth in the D3football.com poll, while UW-Oshkosh started the season ranked ninth. Oshkosh dropped back to 18th after losing to UW-La Crosse in Week 5, Oshkosh dropped again to 23rd in Week 6, after losing to UW-Whitewater. Oshkosh jumped back up to 19th in the latest rankings. UW-La Crosse, dropped to 14th from 11th after a win against UW-Plateville by a single point in Week 5, but stayed at 14th with a narrow win against Stout in Week 6. They jumped up to 12th in the recent rankings. UW-Stevens Point was receiving votes in Week 1 but has since fell out. In the latest AFCA Top 25 poll, UW-Whitewater was ranked third, UW-La Crosse 16th, and UW-Oshkosh 20th. UW-River Falls is receiving 35 votes in the AFCA poll and 17 in the D3Football poll.
NATIONAL RANKINGS: Stout has fallen out of the rankings after consecutive loses to 20th ranked UW-Oshkosh and UW-River Falls who is in the votes receiving category.
The Blue Devils returned to the national rankings during the 2017 season after an upset win of fourth ranked St. Thomas. were first mentioned in the 2017 AFCA Football Coaches Top 25 poll, Sept. 24 and again Oct. 1, but fell out after a six point overtime loss to UW-La Crosse...When Stout was voted 25th in the 2017 Week 2 Top 25 poll, it was the first time Stout was ranked in the Top 25 since Week 5 of the 2005 season when the Blue Devils were ranked 23rd. During 2017, Stout climbed as high as 22nd in the D3football.com poll in week four, but fell out of the Top 25 after consecutive losses to UW-Platteville and UW-Whitewater. The Blue Devils reappeared in the receiving votes category during the Week 7 poll. The last time Stout received votes in the D3football.com poll was during the 2010 season. Stout often received votes during the 2000s. The Blue Devils appeared in the AFCA Coaches poll during the Sept. 25 poll, ranking 25th. Stout returned to the Receiving Votes category in the AFCA poll Oct. 24. Previous to the 2017 season, the last time the Blue Devils were mentioned in the D3football.com Top 25 was when they received votes during the 2010 season.
THE COACHES: UW-Stout: Clayt Birmingham (45-62) is in his 12th season in 2021 as the UW-Stout head coach. Before coming to Stout, Birmingham coached at Western Michigan, Emporia College and UW-Stevens Point. Birmingham was the UW-Stout defensive coordinator for three years before assuming the head coaching role. Birmingham played his college football at UW-Stevens Point. UW-Plattevile: Mike Emendorfer completed his 21st season at the helm of the program in November and once again led the Pioneers into the NCAA DIII national rankings during the 2019 season. Becoming the all-time winningest coach in program history during the 2016 season, he has compiled an overall record of 108-104. His 108 wins rank 7
th on the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) all-time list and he is the WIAC's active leader in victories. Overall, the Pioneers have compiled a 60-21 mark over the previous eight seasons, with a pair of NCAA Division III playoff appearances in 2013 and 2016.
COACHING STAFF: Head coach
Clayt Birmingham works with the defensive backs.
Travis Destache returns as the defensive coordinator and also works with the linebackers. Destache was named the WIAC assistant coach of the year by the WFCA in 2017. Destache is in his 15th season with the Blue Devils and ninth as defensive coordinator.
Nick Pesik begins his third season as the Blue Devil offensive coordinator, coming to Stout after three years as the wide receivers coach at UW-Whitewater.
Derek Branch is in his eighth season with the Blue Devils. An all-conference offensive lineman with the Blue Devils during his playing years, Branch will work with the offensive line.
Jake Schiff begins his sixth year with the Blue Devil coaching staff. Schiff played defensive back for the Blue Devils and was a student assistant coach in 2014 and 2015. Schiff works with the defensive line.
Jed Stutzman is in his ninth year with the Blue Devils and will again work with the running backs. Jeff Sullivan was an assistant coach with the Blue Devils from 2003-05, returning in 2016 after an 11 year hiatus from college football. During the interim, Sullivan was an assistant coach with a number of high school programs and is a member of the first class to earn their PhD at Stout. Sullivan works with the defensive line.
Tarek Yaeggi is in his second year as a Blue Devil assistant coach and works with the wide receivers. Mark Thomas returns to the Blue Devils as an assistant football coach, beginning his 30th season on the Blue Devils' gridiron, and will work with the outside linebackers during the 2021 season. After an all-conference and all-region career as a Blue Devil punter, Clark Riedel is in his fourth year as an assistant coach and will work with the special teams.
THE LEAGUES: UW-Stout is a member of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). Stout was fifth in league play in 2019 and the Blue Devils were picked to finish fifth in a WIAC preseason poll released in late August.
SCHOLAR-ATHLETE: Linebacker
Haydon Miller has been selected as a 2021 National Football Foundation (NFF) scholar-athlete and will be a semi-finalist for the Campbell Trophy.

BIG KICKOFF RETURNS: Noel Gonzalez returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown against UW-Stevens Point, Nov. 5, 2016 at Stevens Point. The return was the longest return since Mike Bechtel returned a 98-yard kickoff return against UW-Whitewater, Oct. 14, 1995 on the Blue Devils' homecoming. Carlos Concepcion returned a kick 90 yards against UW-Eau Claire, Oct. 23, 2010. Jesse Wendt, who holds the school single season record for kickoff return average, returned a kickoff 90 yards in 2004. Tony Beckham did not have any 90-plus yard returns, but in back-to-back seasons, the future NFL draftee returned an 88-yard kickoff and an 89-yard return in 2000 and 2001, respectively.
FIELD GOAL BLOCK & RETURN: During the 2015 season, Travis Shackleton blocked a 29-yard field goal attempt by UW-La Crosse in La Crosse, Oct. 10, 2015, and Enzo Rosani scooped up the ball on the La Crosse 14, returning it 86 yards for a score. The blocked kick was Shackleton's first career block and the touchdown was Rosani's first collegiate TD. There was no mention in the UW-Stout, the WIAC or the NCAA record books for returning blocked field goal attempts. There is now a category in the Stout record book. After sending out a request to NCAA Division III sports information directors, the following list of blocked field goals was compiled.

STOUT FOOTBALL HISTORY: Stout Institute played their first game on Nov. 4, 1911, when they lost to River Falls Normal School, 13-11. Walter Anderson scored Stout's first touchdown, an 85 yard kickoff return. A week later, Stout won their first game, 30-2, against LaCrosse Business School as Harvey Tice scored four touchdowns. The predecessor to the WIAC began in 1913 and Stout has won five conference titles - 1921, 1941, 1949, 1965 and 2000. Stout became the Blue Devils during the late 1920s or early 1930s. Football was not played during the war years of 1918, 1943, and 1944. Along the way, the school has gone through a number of name changes - Stout Institute, Stout State College, Stout State University and the University of Wisconsin-Stout. DON & NONA WILLIAMS STADIUM: UW-Stout's Don and Nona Williams Stadium got a facelift in 2018 with the installation of an updated surface. FieldTurf installed the FieldTurf Revolution 360. FieldTurf promotes this surface as having "optimal durability, resilience, and feel." A padding/drainage mat will be added, as well as flushing the current drainage system to make sure the field sheds water as designed. The field's layout will be similar to the previous markings and will again include markings for high school hash marks. The S logo at midfield has been replaced by the new Blaze head logo. The stadium, which was opened during the 2001 season, last had the stadium turf replaced during the summer of 2008 when the original Astroturf-type surface was replaced with ProGrass, a surface that more closely resembled natural grass. Don & Nona Williams Stadium was only the second artificial playing surface in the state of Wisconsin when it opened in 2001. At the time, the Wisconsin Badgers were the only Wisconsin college team that played their games on artificial turf. The Green Bay Packers had an artificial surface in their practice facility. Now, every WIAC school has an artificial surface, and many high schools in the state have followed suit.
