LAST TIME OUT: UW-STOUT: UW-Stout ran out to a 23-0 lead before UW-Stevens Point scored in the fourth quarter and the Blue Devils went on to beat the Pointers for the second time this season, this time in a 37-12 decision at Williams Stadium. Stout got two touchdown receptions from
Levy Hamer, a 19-yard catch from wide receiver
Tyler Seymour at 8:50 of the first period, and the again at 13:13 in the third quarter, a 20-yard pass from
Sean Borgerding. Hamer had five receptions for 90 yards to move to second on the UW-Stout all-time receiving list. Stout took a 10-0 lead as time ran out in the first half on a 48-yard field goal by
Jack Meyer. Meyer would later in the game attempt a 57-yard field goal, but came up just short. Borgerding scampered into the end zone from 1-yard out at 9:27 of the third period to make it 23-0.
Matt Pomietlo scored from 1-yard out at 14:26 of the fourth period after the Blue Devils recovered a fumble deep in Stevens Point territory. The Pointers got on the board at 10:30 of the fourth quarter on a 27-yard reception from Trey Schroeder, the Pointers' back-up. Starter Max Herro was knocked out of the game on the second Pointer drive. The Blue Devils answered back with a 5-yard run by
Carter Fonger, his first collegiate touchdown. Auguilera caught a 15 yard touchdown with 1:21 left. Stout was 6 for 6 in the red zone today. Stout finished with 371 total yards, 224 passing, 147 rushing. Borgerding 17 for 33 with 205 yards passing.
Parker Fossum had 64 yards receiving on four catches. Pomietlo had 71 yards rushing in 16 carries. Fonger finished with 44 yards on nine carries. Stevens Point finished with 265 total yards, 155 passing, 110 rushing. Schroeder was 15 for 19 for 139 yards passing. Aguilera had two TDs on two total catches for 42 yards. |

LAST TIME OUT: UW-LA CROSSE: The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse football team, ranked 11th this week on D3football.com Top-25 Poll, eked out a 24-23 victory at UW-Platteville Saturday afternoon at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium. The Eagles improve to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Pioneers drop to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the conference. UWL finished with 276 yards on Saturday, including 171 rushing and 105 passing. The Eagles totaled 17 first downs while going five-of-15 on third-down. UWL was one-of-two in the red-zone. Jakob Parks went eight-of-20 passing for 105 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Joey Stutzman finished with 153 yards rushing and one touchdown on 30 carries (5.1 average) while Cameron Sorenson caught three passes for 62 yards and a touchdown. UW-Platteville totaled 467 yards with 14 rushing and 453 passing. The Pioneers had 24 first downs and went six-of-13 on third-down while finishing three-of-four in the red-zone. |

WHEN STOUT AND LA CROSSE LAST MET: The Eagles scored with about five minutes remaining in the first period when Evan Lewandowski hit Cole Speiker for a 20-yard TD pass reception. Joey Stutzman gave UWL a 13-0 lead on a six-yard touchdown run with 11:34 left in the second quarter. The extra-point was missed. After forcing a UW-Stout punt, UWL went 60-yards in nine plays with Lewandowski connecting with Cameron Sorenson on a five-yard touchdown pass with 5:24 remaining in the first half for a 20-0 lead. Following a Blue Devil fumble on a punt in the third quarter, Stutzman scored his second TD of the game, a one-yard plunge at 9:37 into the second half. Stout found the end zone when Kevion McDonald snared a 15-yard TD pass from
Sean Borgerding. La Crosse added a pair Spieker touchdown receptions, one in the third and one in the fourth, to take a 40-6 lead at 11:59 of the final quarter.
Levy Hamer caught fire in the fourth quarter. The Blue Devil sophomore, after catching four passes - not a bad days work in itself - snagged six catches in the fourth quarter - including a 20-yard receiving TD - and tallied 107 fourth quarter reception yards to finish with a career-best 189 yards on 10 receptions.
Nick Arguedas scored Stout's final score, a one yard run, and added the two-point conversion on a pass from Borgerding. The Eagles (3-2, 1-1 WIAC) piled up 472 yards of total offensive, 360 passing, 112 on the ground, while Stout (1-4, 0-2 WIAC) tallied 374 total yards, 381 passing yards and minus-7 yards rushing.The Blue Devils turned the ball over four times and Borgerding was sacked eight time. Lewandowski was 26 of 40 for 360 yards and four TDs, three to Spieker, who finished with 14 receptions for 183 yards. Jake Simuncuk had seven receptions for 103 yards. THE PASSING GAME: Sean Borgerding and his receiving corp continues to pick apart defenses through the air, with another 200-plus yard passing display against UW-Stevens Point last Saturday. Borgerding sits nicely as the second most efficient quarterback in the WIAC, with also the second most total passing yards, average passing yards per game, and completion percentage. Borgerding has completed 114 of his 177 passes, picking up 1597 yards and 13 touchdowns for the season. All of the receivers are involved in Stout's passing game, with 12 different receivers catching passes.
Levy Hamer leads the team with 30 receptions for 463 yards and six touchdowns.
Parker Fossum and
Arthur Cox also are among Borgerding's favorite targets with Fossum having 26 receptions, 381 yards, and two touchdowns. Cox has 23 receptions, 286 yards, and two touchdowns as well.
Robvon Jackson has caught two touchdowns as well, and
Patrick Corcoran and Fullback
Camron LeMay each have one TD.
THE RUNNING GAME: The pass-first mindset hasn't slowed down Stout's running backs, as they capitalize on the carries they get. With leading rusher

Matt Pomietlo and
Carter Fonger carried the Blue Devil's running game last week against UW-Stevens Point. They had big shoes to fill, as Graham was leading the WIAC with his 543 yards and nine touchdowns on 89 carries. Pomietlo and Fonger both scored a touchdown against Stevens Point, giving Pomietlo his second of the year and Fonger his first collegiate touchdown. Stout's 2019 leading rusher, QB
Sean Borgerding hasn't been as active on the ground as he was two years ago, but he is still a force to be reckoned with when he gets loose, with a 29 yard run against St. Norbert. Borgerding also picked up his first rushing touchdown of the season last weekend, his first since November 2019.
TOTAL OFFENSE: Stout is averaging 426.8 yards of total offense, 273.8 passing, 153.0 rushing.
DEFENSE: The Blue Devils defense is a force to be reckoned with, as they are stellar at getting their offense back on the feild. They are tied for first in the WIAC with 12 turnover (eight interceptions, four fumble recoveries) so far this season.

Carson Strong,
Gervase Thompson, and
Haydon Miller have also taken the ball back each with an interception. This tight pass defense has given time for Stout's linebackers and d-line to get to the opposing QB.
Ethan Olson and
Riley Crotteau each have 2.5 sacks and Rec Meikle has 1.5. The Blue Devils are allowing 20.8 points per game with 321.8 yards of offense per game, 126.0 yards rushing and 195.8 yards passing. These numbers make the Ble Devil's the second most efficient defense in the WIAC.
CLIMBING THE LADDER: Well into their third seasons, both
Levy Hamer and
Sean Borgerding continue their climbs up UW-Stout all-time lists. WR Hamer passed second place Hall of Famer Mark Rothwell with his 90-yard performance against UW-Stevens Point. Hamer now has 2314 receiving yards on 148 catches. Hamer is now on his way to catch leading Stout receiver Scott Frederickson (1986-89) who has 3390 yards receiving in his time at Stout. Hamer also broke into the top 20 for all time Stout scorers and is tied for 19th with 122 total points. QB Borgerding keeps his place in fourth on the all-time passing-list with 6129 yards, just ahead of Hank Kujak (5367). Next on the list is Nick Ohman (2001-04) with 6401 passing yards. Borgerding has completed 433 of 776 passes, with 51 TDs thrown. This places him fourth on the all-time TD thrown list, behind Nick Ohman (56) again. Others of note are
Rayshawn Graham, who is currently 14th on the UW-Stout all-time rushing list (1568), and
Parker Fossum, who is in 22nd for all-time receiving yards (1066).
THE KICKING GAME: Freshman
Jack Meyer has been the leg for Stout's special teams. Meyer is six for nine on field goal attempts, with a long of 52. Meyer had a 51 yard field goal at UW-Eau Claire and was selected the WIAC special teams player of that week. Meyer also has shown off his strength with punting, averaging 38.9 yards per boot, with a long of 70 yards, that coming at Whitewater on Oct. 2.
Luke Cool has been the man for PATs as he has nailed seven out of nine PATs in the last two games. Meyer had the chance to break the school record with a 57-yard field goal against UW-Stevens Point on Oct. 16, but the ball fell just a few yards short. Meyer did connect on a collegiate-best 52-yard field goal against St. Norbert in September, the longest kick among conference players and is tied in the NCAA Division III as the second-longest field goal of the season. Meyer is tied with Wheaton (Ill) Tommy Gallagher for second. Gettysburg's Doug Cummings has kicked a 55-yard field. Meyer's 51-yard kick is the fourth-longest kick of the season in Division III. The longest kick of the season across the NCAA is a 57-yard kick by Ben Raybon of Northern Colorado, affiliated with the FCS Division.
PRESEASON POLLS: The Blue Devils
finished fifth in the competitive WIAC in 2019 and according to a preseason poll by WIAC football coaches and sports information directors, the Blue Devils are picked to finish fifth in 2021
. UW-Whitewater is picked to finish first, UW-Oshkosh second, UW-Platteville third, UW-La Crosse fourth, UW-Stout fifth, UW-Stevens Point sixth, UW-Eau Claire seventh and UW-River Falls eighth.
WHO'S WHO: La Crosse: UW-La Crosse has played a very balanced game so far this season, averaging 210 yards passing and 185 yards rushing. The Eagle's offense is led by QB Jakob Parks, who has 1249 yards and 14 TDs on 94 completions this season. Parks' 14 touchdowns places him second in the WIAC for touchdowns thrown. Parks' has found his favorite two receivers this season, Jake Simuncak and Cameron Sorenson. Simuncak has 520 yards (the best in the WIAC) on 39 catches and Sorenson has 295 yards on 19 catches. Both receivers have seven touchdowns, tying them for first in the WIAC. The Eagle's backfield is rounded out by running back Joey Stutzman as he is second in the WIAC with 726 yards. On the defensive end, La Crosse has played around defensive back Elijah Alt, as he has been a ball hawk, picking off the opposing quarterback a WIAC-best four times. RANKED OPPONENTS: The WIAC is filled with nationally ranked opponents, as UW-Whitewater holds on to their third rank in the latest D3football.com Top 25 poll. UW-Whitewater opened the season ranked fourth in the D3football.com poll, while UW-Oshkosh started the season ranked ninth. Oshkosh dropped back to 18th after losing to UW-La Crosse in Week 5, Oshkosh dropped again to 23rd in Week 6, after losing to UW-Whitewater. UW-La Crosse, dropped to 14th from 11th after a winning against UW-Plateville by a single point. UW-Stevens Point was receiving votes in Week 1 but has since fell out. In the latest AFCA Top 25 poll, UW-Whitewater was ranked third, UW-La Crosse 13th, and UW-Oshkosh 24th.
NATIONAL RANKINGS: Stout received 12 votes in the d3football.com Top 25 teams, and 13 votes in the AFCA Top 25 poll Oct. 18. The Blue Devils returned to the national rankings during the 2017 season after an upset win of fourth ranked St. Thomas. were first mentioned in the 2017 AFCA Football Coaches Top 25 poll, Sept. 24 and again Oct. 1, but fell out after a six point overtime loss to UW-La Crosse...When Stout was voted 25th in the 2017 Week 2 Top 25 poll, it was the first time Stout was ranked in the Top 25 since Week 5 of the 2005 season when the Blue Devils were ranked 23rd. During 2017, Stout climbed as high as 22nd in the D3football.com poll in week four, but fell out of the Top 25 after consecutive losses to UW-Platteville and UW-Whitewater. The Blue Devils reappeared in the receiving votes category during the Week 7 poll. The last time Stout received votes in the D3football.com poll was during the 2010 season. Stout often received votes during the 2000s. The Blue Devils appeared in the AFCA Coaches poll during the Sept. 25 poll, ranking 25th. Stout returned to the Receiving Votes category in the AFCA poll Oct. 24. Previous to the 2017 season, the last time the Blue Devils were mentioned in the D3football.com Top 25 was when they received votes during the 2010 season.
THE COACHES: UW-Stout: Clayt Birmingham (45-60) is in his 12th season in 2021 as the UW-Stout head coach. Before coming to Stout, Birmingham coached at Western Michigan, Emporia College and UW-Stevens Point. Birmingham was the UW-Stout defensive coordinator for three years before assuming the head coaching role. Birmingham played his college football at UW-Stevens Point. UW-La Crosse: Matt Janus was named UW-La Crosse's 14th head football coach on February 5, 2020 after serving as interim head coach since December 12, 2019. A native of Lake Zurich, Illinois, Janus completed his third year as the Eagles' defensive coordinator in 2019. UWL finished in the top-four in eight defensive categories in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) in 2019, including second in turnover margin (+8), opponents' third-down conversions (34.0%) and red-zone defense (65.0%). The team was third in the league in rushing defense (107.7 yards per game) and quarterback sacks (40) this season while also finishing fourth in scoring defense (22.1 points per game), total defense (365.3 yards) and passing defense efficiency (113.9).
COACHING STAFF: Head coach
Clayt Birmingham works with the defensive backs.
Travis Destache returns as the defensive coordinator and also works with the linebackers. Destache was named the WIAC assistant coach of the year by the WFCA in 2017. Destache is in his 15th season with the Blue Devils and ninth as defensive coordinator.
Nick Pesik begins his third season as the Blue Devil offensive coordinator, coming to Stout after three years as the wide receivers coach at UW-Whitewater.
Derek Branch is in his eighth season with the Blue Devils. An all-conference offensive lineman with the Blue Devils during his playing years, Branch will work with the offensive line.
Jake Schiff begins his sixth year with the Blue Devil coaching staff. Schiff played defensive back for the Blue Devils and was a student assistant coach in 2014 and 2015. Schiff works with the defensive line.
Jed Stutzman is in his ninth year with the Blue Devils and will again work with the running backs. Jeff Sullivan was an assistant coach with the Blue Devils from 2003-05, returning in 2016 after an 11 year hiatus from college football. During the interim, Sullivan was an assistant coach with a number of high school programs and is a member of the first class to earn their PhD at Stout. Sullivan works with the defensive line.
Tarek Yaeggi is in his second year as a Blue Devil assistant coach and works with the wide receivers. Mark Thomas returns to the Blue Devils as an assistant football coach, beginning his 30th season on the Blue Devils' gridiron, and will work with the outside linebackers during the 2021 season. After an all-conference and all-region career as a Blue Devil punter, Clark Riedel is in his fourth year as an assistant coach and will work with the special teams.
THE LEAGUES: UW-Stout is a member of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). Stout was fifth in league play in 2019 and the Blue Devils were picked to finish fifth in a WIAC preseason poll released in late August.
SCHOLAR-ATHLETE: Linebacker
Haydon Miller has been selected as a 2021 National Football Foundation (NFF) scholar-athlete and will be a semi-finalist for the Campbell Trophy.

BIG KICKOFF RETURNS: Noel Gonzalez returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown against UW-Stevens Point, Nov. 5, 2016 at Stevens Point. The return was the longest return since Mike Bechtel returned a 98-yard kickoff return against UW-Whitewater, Oct. 14, 1995 on the Blue Devils' homecoming. Carlos Concepcion returned a kick 90 yards against UW-Eau Claire, Oct. 23, 2010. Jesse Wendt, who holds the school single season record for kickoff return average, returned a kickoff 90 yards in 2004. Tony Beckham did not have any 90-plus yard returns, but in back-to-back seasons, the future NFL draftee returned an 88-yard kickoff and an 89-yard return in 2000 and 2001, respectively.
FIELD GOAL BLOCK & RETURN: During the 2015 season, Travis Shackleton blocked a 29-yard field goal attempt by UW-La Crosse in La Crosse, Oct. 10, 2015, and Enzo Rosani scooped up the ball on the La Crosse 14, returning it 86 yards for a score. The blocked kick was Shackleton's first career block and the touchdown was Rosani's first collegiate TD. There was no mention in the UW-Stout, the WIAC or the NCAA record books for returning blocked field goal attempts. There is now a category in the Stout record book. WAR ON I-94: The War on I-94 Trophy between UW-Stout and UW-Eau Claire started in 2008. Eau Claire won the first contest for the trophy at Don and Nona Williams Stadium, Nov. 15, 2008, the final game of the 2008 season. Stout holds a 8-4 lead in the series. The teams played for the Little Brown Jug for two brief stints, once during the 1930s and again in the 1950s. Stout will host the 100th meeting between the two teams in 2022.

PROMOTIONS PLANNED FOR 2021: The Blue Devils will host a combination Community Day, Youth Day and Dorm Days as the Blue Devils welcome fans back to Don and Nona Wiliams Stadium after a one year hiatus. The Oct. 16 game vs. UW-Stevens Point is Homecoming and is sponsored by Erbert and Gerbert's. The Oct. 30 game vs. UW-Oshkosh is sponsored by Bill's Distributing and the Nov. 6 game vs. UW-River Falls is Military Appreciation Day and Senior Day and is sponsored by Westconsin Credit Union.
MAX SPARGER: UW-Stout dedicated the Don & Nona Williams Stadium press box in honor of former UW-Stout athletic director and coach Max Sparger, September 11, 2010. Sparger led the Blue Devil football team to the 1965 WSUC championship. After leaving Stout in 1972, Sparger served as the WSUC commissioner. Sparger is a member of the UW-Stout Hall of Fame, as well as the WIAC Hall of Fame.
STOUT FOOTBALL HISTORY: Stout Institute played their first game on Nov. 4, 1911, when they lost to River Falls Normal School, 13-11. Walter Anderson scored Stout's first touchdown, an 85 yard kickoff return. A week later, Stout won their first game, 30-2, against LaCrosse Business School as Harvey Tice scored four touchdowns. The predecessor to the WIAC began in 1913 and Stout has won five conference titles - 1921, 1941, 1949, 1965 and 2000. Stout became the Blue Devils during the late 1920s or early 1930s. Football was not played during the war years of 1918, 1943, and 1944. Along the way, the school has gone through a number of name changes - Stout Institute, Stout State College, Stout State University and the University of Wisconsin-Stout. TAILGATING: UW-Stout has adopted a formal tailgating policy for Blue Devil football games. The south end of the parking lot by the Don and Nona Williams Stadium has been designated as a tailgating area known as the "Tailgate Zone." Fans will be able to participate in the Blue Devil Walk. Tailgating is permitted three hours before the game, and tailgating activities will cease at game time. Only propane grills are permitted, no open flame grills. Tobacco is not permitted.
EUROPEAN FLAVOR: UW-Stout coach Clayt Birmingham has been active in raising the popularity of American football in Europe and has made several trips to Europe to participate in workshops and coaching clinics. Quentin Danès, a football coach from France, spent two weeks in the Blue Devils' 2019 training camp. | Danes Feature story | During the 2018 season, the Blue Devils had a coach from Germany into preseason camp for a couple of days. Enzo Rosani began his career as a Blue Devil, joining Stout as a cornerback from France on the 2014 roster. Feature Story In all likelihood, Rosani is the only international student to have played football for UW-Stout for four seasons. Rosani earned All-WIAC second team honors. For the 2019 season, Quentin Danes spent two weeks during the preseason working with the coaching staff. Danes was a teammate of Rosani on the French national team...The Blue Devils have consistently welcomed European coaches to their training camp. In 2011 it was Nico Teichert and Johannes Fiebig from Germany getting an up close look at American football. The Blue Devils also had Antti Kurenniemi, a native of Finland, on their roster in 2011. Kurenniemi saw action in several games. In 2012, the Blue Devils, for the first time in several years, did not host a European coach, but did have an international player, Jan Andre Millemann from Germany, who is the subject of this feature story.
DON & NONA WILLIAMS STADIUM: UW-Stout's Don and Nona Williams Stadium got a facelift in 2018 with the installation of an updated surface. FieldTurf installed the FieldTurf Revolution 360. FieldTurf promotes this surface as having "optimal durability, resilience, and feel." A padding/drainage mat will be added, as well as flushing the current drainage system to make sure the field sheds water as designed. The field's layout will be similar to the previous markings and will again include markings for high school hash marks. The S logo at midfield has been replaced by the new Blaze head logo. The stadium, which was opened during the 2001 season, last had the stadium turf replaced during the summer of 2008 when the original Astroturf-type surface was replaced with ProGrass, a surface that more closely resembled natural grass. Don & Nona Williams Stadium was only the second artificial playing surface in the state of Wisconsin when it opened in 2001. At the time, the Wisconsin Badgers were the only Wisconsin college team that played their games on artificial turf. The Green Bay Packers had an artificial surface in their practice facility. Now, every WIAC school has an artificial surface, and many high schools in the state have followed suit.

COACH BIRMINGHAM AS A POINTER: (Updated Oct. 18, 2021) UW-Stout coach
Clayt Birmingham was a four-year regular in the defensive backfield during his playing days with the Pointers. Birmingham was a two-time All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) defensive back at UW-Stevens Point (1995, 1994). In 1994, Birmingham was the WIAC interceptions co-leader. So we had to dig into the files to find out how Coach Birmingham fared against the Blue Devils. On Oct. 22, 1994 on Nelson Field in Menomonie, as Stout was driving for a TD, Birmingham stepped in front of a Forrest Schneider pass in the end zone to end the threat. On Oct. 23, 1993 in Stevens Point, Birmingham recorded a five-yard sack. As a player, Birmingham's Pointers did not lose to Stout in his four years. As a coach, Birmingham is 8-4 against his alma mater, including a 45-14 non-conference earlier this season.
