A LOOK AT UW-STOUT:
  • Shannan Watkins and Amber Fabeck are leading the Blue Devils in scoring, with Watkins averaging 11.4 points and Fabeck right behind at 11.3 points. The Blue Devils are second in the conference in scoring offense in both all games and league-games only. Overall, Stout is averaging 70.0 points per contest. In the grueling WIAC contests, Stout is averaging 64.4 points. Overall, Stout gives up 62.6 points and in league games-only, Stout gives up a nearly identical 62.3 points.
  • Watkins has notched a career-best 27 points against Illinois Wesleyan early in the season. Watkins nearly matched that single game total when she scored 23 points against Viterbo University, hitting 13 free throws. Watkins has nine times scored in double digits, but has had a much tougher go of it in the conference battles, averaging 7.0 points in conference games only after the first round of play. On the boards, Watkins play has been very consistent throughout the season. She shares the team lead in rebounds at 5.9 boards and ups that slightly in conference games at 6.0. Watkins is second in the league in assists with 77 (4.28).
  • Fabeck is averaging 11.3 points and 4.7 rebounds. Thirteen times this season Fabeck has scored in double figures, five times in league play. Fabeck recorded a double-double by scoring 13 points and pulling down 10 rebounds against Viterbo University.
  • Watkins and Emily Jacques are neck-and-neck in rebounds, with both averaging 5.9 rebounds. Eight times this season, Jacques has recorded seven or more rebounds. Watkins has exceeded seven rebounds in a game 10 times this year. Twice this season Watkins has pulled down 10 or more rebounds, getting 11 boards against UW-Platteville and 10 against Northwestern in November.
  • Liz Oswald is averaging 9.4 points. Eight times this season she has scored in double digits. Oswald s the team's top 3-point shooter, dropping in 36 of 106 long range attempts (.340). Oswald averages 2.0 3-pointers made per game, tied for the league lead. Oswald has found the bottom of the net from beyond the arc in 14 games so far this season.
  • Katie Christopherson has made herself known, like the time she hit a 3-point shot from three-quarter count. Unfortunately, she got the shot off a split second too late after the buzzer and the shot did not count. But Christopherson has dropped in enough points in her freshman campaign to average 6.2 points. She is second on the team in assists with 37 and is tied for Fabeck on the team in 3-pointers made with 17.
  • Freshman Haley Yaeger is coming off the bench and is pulling down 4.1 rebounds and is averaging 6.7 points. Yaeger recorded her first collegiate double-double, scoring 13 points and pulling down 11 rebounds against Husson University in Florida.
  • Lizzy Olsem has come off the bench and has scored in double digits five times, with a career-best 16 points at nationally ranked Wartburg College. Olsem, a junior forward, has played in all 18 games, starting one and is averaging 6.0 points in 11.6 minutes. As a freshman, Olsem averaged 4.5 minutes across 21 games, averaging 0.5 points. Last season, Olsem saw action in all 27 games, averaging 8.7 minutes and 2.5 points. Over her first two seasons, Olsem tallied 68 total points, but this season has tossed in 103 points.
  • After suffering their first home loss of the season to UW-Stevens Point, Jan. 25, the Blue Devils are currently 7-1 at home, returning Johnson Fieldhouse to "the cozy confines" and home court advantage. Stout was 11-2 last year at home, losing only to UW-Platteville and UW-Oshkosh at home. Do the math, and Stout is 18-3 on Dewey Mintz Court over the last two years.
  • The Blue Devils return two starters from last season's team in Amber Fabeck, who earned all-WIAC honorable mention honors, and Liz Oswald. Fabeck averaged 13.4 points and had 5.0 rebounds. Oswald, along with Shannan Watkins, Becky Fesenmaier, Emily Jacques and Lizzy Olsem have seen considerable throughout their careers. The Blue Devils return nine players from last year and welcome nine newcomers.
  • The Blue Devils lost two all-conference players in guards Kyncaide Diedrich and Bailey Diersen and will need to replace the duo's scoring prowess. Also lost to graduation was Carolyn Feddema.
  • But Amber Fabeck, who earned All-WIAC honorable mention honors, returns. Fabeck last season averaged 13.4 points and pulled down 5.0 rebounds. Shannan Watkins returned full-time for the Blue Devils last year after missing nearly a season and a half due to injury. The senior guard from Hoover, Ala., saw action in 26 games and averaged 8.2 points. Watkins was among the leaders for the Blue Devils in scoring, assists and steals.
  • Senior Becky Fesenmaier and Emily Jacques have been contributors their first three season and Fesenmaier saw action in all 27 games last year and Jacques in 26 games. Throughout her career, Jacques played in 76 of 77 possible games. Throughout her career, Jacques has averaged 3.8 rebounds per contest. Fesenmaier has played in 74 possible games.
  • Liz Oswald and Lizzy Olsem played in all 27 games year, with Oswald starting all 27 games where she averaged 6.7 points.
  • Also returning this season are senior Kelsey Kainz, junior Keysha Hazelton and sophomore Gina Palasz.
  • Newcomers this year include junior transfer guard Molly Wampler, guards Lindsey Johnson, Courtney Crouch, Melanie Carli, Katie Christopherson, Alexa Neilitz, and Paityn Tiefs, freshman forward Haylee Yaeger and freshman center Erin O'Brien

CONFERENCE STANDINGS:
  • The Blue Devils are projected to finish fifth in the WIAC according to a WIAC preseason poll by conference coaches and sports information directors. UW-Oshkosh was picked to finish first, UW-La Crosse second, UW-Whitewater third, UW-Eau Claire fourth, UW-Platteville sixth, UW-Stevens Point seventh and UW-River Falls eighth..

STOUT LAST TIME OUT:
  • The Blue Devils went 0-2 in league play, losing 64-45 at UW-La Crosse, then losing their first home game of the season, 65-63, to UW-Stevens Point, Jan. 25.
  • UW-Stout held an 18-point lead with nearly four minutes remaining in the third quarter, but saw that lead disintegrate and UW-Stevens Point came out of Johnson Fieldhouse with a 65-63 WIAC win over the Blue Devils Saturday. The Blue Devils held a 50-32 lead with 3:41 remaining but the Pointers outscored Stout 33-13 the rest of the way, including holding Stout to five points in the fourth quarter. The Pointers tied the game at 61-61 with 1:16 left on Amber Baehman two free throws, but Stout's Amber Fabeck tied the game with a pair of free throws. Stevens Point took their first lead of the game, 64-63 on a Bailee Collins free throw with 16 seconds remaining after Collins drew a foul on Fabeck, who left the game with five fouls. Stout was forced to foul with four seconds left and Schmidt hit one foul for what would prove to be the final 65-63 score. The Blue Devils called time out, but the heavily contested shot to tie the game did not find the bottom of the basket. | Game Story and Statistics
  • While Stout had trouble finishing against UW-Stevens Point, the Blue Devils had trouble getting going against UW-La Crosse earlier in the week, scoring three first quarter points and 13 total first half points in a 64-45 trouncing in La Crosse. Freshman Haylee Yaeger was the only Blue Devil to score in double figures, scoring 14 points. | Game Story and Statistics

THE COACHES:
UW-STOUT:

  • Hannah Iverson (30-15) is in her second year as the head coach of the Blue Devils.
  • Prior to becoming the Blue Devils' head coach, Iverson was the director of player development for women's basketball at NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay, a position she began in October, 2016. As well as working directly with the team, Iverson managed the program's operating budget, coordinated team travel, co-directed summer camps and clinics and handled all aspects of team film. She assisted in the set-up of on-campus recruiting and coordinating official and unofficial visits for potential recruits. Iverson held a similar position - director of basketball operations - at the University of Illinois from 2014-16.
  • Iverson spent two years at NAIA member Ashford University in Clinton, Iowa, as an assistant women's basketball coach for the 2012-14 school years. Iverson was in charge of guard development in a season where she helped the Saints to the 2014 Association of Independent Institutions tournament championship, earning Ashford a berth in the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Championship tournament, the first conference title and appearance in the NAIA D-II tournament in Saints history.
  • A member of the UW-Green Bay women's basketball team from 2008-12, playing as Hannah Quilling, Iverson finished her career in the top 10 for games played as the Phoenix posted a 122-13 record over her four years. The team was 68-4 in Horizon League play and advanced to the NCAA Division I tournament four times, including one trip to the Sweet 16. She led the Horizon League in assist-to-turnover ratio in 2011-12, was sixth in steals per game and ninth in assists per game. She was also named to the Horizon League Honor Roll, earned the UW-Green Bay Chancellor's Leadership Medallion, was a two-time recipient of the UW-Green Bay University Leadership Award and the Patricia Hinckley Scholarship, and won the JoAnne Jennings Award in 2012.
  • Iverson has gotten to 30 career wins faster than any other Blue Devil basketball coach, men or women. Iverson reached her 30th win in 42 games.  Mark Thomas needed to turn around a women's basketball program that had won only two games the previous two seasons before he arrived. Thomas needed 75 games to reach 30 wins, but once he did, he kept building and became the winningest basketball coach in Blue Devil history, both men and women. On the men's side, Ray Johnson needed 59 games to reach 30 wins. Dewey Mintz needed 67 games to reach 30, John Muraski needed 63 and Eddie Andrist needed 59 games.

UW-EAU CLAIRE COACH TONJA ENGLUND

  • Tonja Englund is in her 20th season as head women's basketball coach in 2019-20 at UW-Eau Claire. The Blugolds finished off their 2018-2019 season with a 4-10 WIAC record, and a 13-12 record overall. Englund coached 2019 WIAC Player of the Year Hallee Hoeppner, who also earned All-American and All-Region honors. Hoeppner is the fifth Blugold to earn WIAC Player of the Year honors under Englund. Entering the 2019-2020 season Englund's 328 wins ranks third most in WIAC history. In 2015-16 Englund became UW-Eau Claire's winningest women's basketball coach. Englund has four WIAC Championships in her tenure (2001, 2003, 2008, 2012) as well as five NCAA tournament appearances.
