Women's Basketball Preview: Blue Devils travel to sixth-ranked Whitewater Saturday

SATURDAY'S GAME: The Blue Devils (12-3, 3-1 WIAC) will travel to sixth ranked  UW-Whitewater (14-1, 4-0 WIAC), Saturday, Jan. 18 with a 3 p.m. start. The Warhawks are in first place in the WIAC, while Stout is  tied for second place with UW-Eau Claire.  The game is on as scheduled.

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (12-3, 3-1 WIAC) will host UW-River Falls (4-9, 0-3 WIAC), Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m., then will be at sixth ranked  UW-Whitewater (14-1, 4-0 WIAC), Saturday, Jan. 18 with a 3 p.m. start. Stout is currently tied for second place in the WIAC with three other teams. 

BLUE DEVILS LIVE: Join the Blue Devils every second Thursday of the at the Stout Ale House for Blue Devil Live, a live radio show with host Pete Knutson, the voice of the Blue Devils. Throughout the show, Knutson will talk to Blue Devil coaches and student-athletes about what is coming up and what happened last week. The next broadcast is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 9 at noon.

A LOOK AT UW-STOUT:
  • Fresh off an exhilarating double overtime win over UW-Oshkosh over the weekend and a blowout win over UW-River Falls on Wednesday, the Blue Devils were able to look in their crystal ball to catch a glimpse of the future as freshmen Lindsey Johnson and Katie Christopherson helped to propel Stout to a seemingly unlikely win over the Titans. Johnson scored a 3-pointer in regulation to send the game into overtime and repeated the feat, hitting a 3 to send the game into the second overtime. Johnson finished the night with 12 points and Christopherson 15. Against the Falcons, Christopherson had 14 points and freshman Haylee Yaeger finished with 11. 
  • The Blue Devils have three players averaging in double figures with Shannan Watkins leading Stout with a 11.9 per game average, Amber Fabeck is averaging 11.4 points and Liz Oswald 10.6. Watkins hit a career-best 27 points against Illinois Wesleyan early in the season. Watkins nearly matched that single game total when she scored 23 points against Viterbo University, hitting 13 free throws. Emily Jacques leads the team in rebounds, averaging 6.4 rebounds and Watkins is right behind with 6.2 boards.Jacques has recorded five or more rebounds over the last five games, pulling down a career-high 11 vs. Husson University. Eight times this season, Jacques has recorded seven or more rebounds. Watkins has exceeded seven rebounds in a game eight times this year. Twice this season Watkins has pulled down 10 or more rebounds, getting 11 boards against UW-Platteville and notched 10 against Northwestern in November.  Fabeck is averaging 4.7 rebounds.. Freshman Haley Yaeger is coming off the bench and is pulling down 4.1 rebounds. Watkins is the league leader in assists, averaging 4.50 and seven times this season has recorded five or more assists. 
  • Amber Fabeck has 11 times this season scored in double digits, while Shannan Watkins has accomplished the feat eight times and Liz Oswald eight times. Lizzy Olsem has come off the bench and has scored in double digits five times, with a career-best 16 points at nationally ranked Wartburg College. Olsem, a junior forward, has played in all 15 games, starting one and is averaging 6.9 points in 12.1 minutes. Olsem has seen her minutes per game jump up nearly minutes over the last week. As a freshman, Olsem averaged 4.5 minutes across 21 games, averaging 0.5 points. Last season, Olsem saw action in all 27 games, averaging 8.7 minutes and 2.5 points. Over her first two seasons, Olsem tallied 68 total points, but this season has tossed in 105 points. 
  • Stout is averaging league-best 73.1 points and are giving up 61.7. Only four times this year have the Blue Devils scored more than 80 points. Defensively, the Blue Devils have held four opponents to 50 points or less this season, and only four times this year has an opponent scored more than 70 points. The Blue Devils are currently 7-0 at home, returning Johnson Fieldhouse to "the cozy confines" and home court advantage. Stout was 11-2 last year at home, losing only to UW-Platteville and UW-Oshkosh at home. 
  • The Blue Devils return two starters from last season's team in Amber Fabeck, who earned all-WIAC honorable mention honors, and Liz Oswald. Fabeck averaged 13.4 points and had 5.0 rebounds. Oswald, along with Shannan Watkins, Becky Fesenmaier, Emily Jacques and Lizzy Olsem have seen considerable throughout their careers. The Blue Devils return nine players from last year and welcome nine newcomers.
  • The Blue Devils lost two all-conference players in guards Kyncaide Diedrich and Bailey Diersen and will need to replace the duo's scoring prowess. Also lost to graduation was Carolyn Feddema.
  • But Amber Fabeck, who earned All-WIAC honorable mention honors, returns. Fabeck last season averaged 13.4 points and pulled down 5.0 rebounds. Shannan Watkins returned full-time for the Blue Devils last year after missing nearly a season and a half due to injury. The senior guard from Hoover, Ala., saw action in 26 games and averaged 8.2 points. Watkins was among the leaders for the Blue Devils in scoring, assists and steals.
  • Senior Becky Fesenmaier and Emily Jacques have been contributors their first three season and Fesenmaier saw action in all 27 games last year and Jacques in 26 games. Throughout her career, Jacques played in 76 of 77 possible games. Throughout her career, Jacques has averaged 3.8 rebounds per contest. Fesenmaier has played in 74 possible games.
  • Liz Oswald and Lizzy Olsem played in all 27 games year, with Oswald starting all 27 games where she averaged 6.7 points.
  • Also returning this season are senior Kelsey Kainz, junior Keysha Hazelton and sophomore Gina Palasz.
  • Newcomers this year include junior transfer guard Molly Wampler, guards Lindsey Johnson, Courtney Crouch, Melanie Carli, Katie Christopherson, Alexa Neilitz, and Paityn Tiefs, freshman forward Haylee Yaeger and freshman center Erin O'Brien

CONFERENCE STANDINGS:
  • The Blue Devils are projected to finish fifth in the WIAC according to a WIAC preseason poll by conference coaches and sports information directors. UW-Oshkosh was picked to finish first, UW-La Crosse second, UW-Whitewater third, UW-Eau Claire fourth, UW-Platteville sixth, UW-Stevens Point seventh and UW-River Falls eighth..

STOUT LAST TIME OUT:
  • UW-Stout held a nine-point halftime lead, but completely blew the game open in the third period as the Blue Devils ran past UW-River Falls, 86-59, Jan. 15 on Dewey Mintz Court in Johnson Fieldhouse. Led by nine third quarter points by Liz Oswald and seven points each from Amber Fabeck and Katie Christopherson, the Blue Devils (12-3, 3-1 WIAC) outscored the Falcons (4-10, 0-4 WIAC) 30-12 in the quarter after intermission to win their seven straight game at home this season. The Blue Devil bench was a huge factor throughout the game, outscoring the Falcons' bench 44-14. The Blue Devils also went to work in the paint, knocking down 54 points in the paint to 32 for River Falls.  Fabeck led all scorers with 18 points, going 7 of 9 from the floor, including making her only 3-point attempt.   • UW-Stout had five players in double figures and the Blue Devils needed everyone of those points as Stout went on to a 77-71 double overtime win over UW-Oshkosh Saturday at Kolf Center. Stout overcame deficits of eight points with under six minutes left in regulation and eight points with 38 seconds to play in the first overtime. After falling behind, then battling back in the first overtime, Stout proceeded to score the first five points in double overtime on a layup by Lizzy Olsem and an Oswald 3-pointer. The Blue Devils never relinquished the lead during the second overtime, building seven-point advantages on three occasions in the final 97 seconds. Liz Oswald scored 16 points, Katie Christopherson 15, Lindsey Johnson 12 and Amber Fabeck and Lizzy Olsem each added 10 points. Trailing by six points in regulation, Johnson hit two 3-pointers in the final 68 seconds to tie the score a 52-52 and send the game into overtime. The Blue Devils overcame a 30-point effort by Laura Porath. Nikki Arneson added 14 points for the Titans. Stout dominated the rebounding game, pulling down a season-high 57 rebounds to 37 for the Titans. Oswald and Olsem each had nine rebounds and Emily Jacques had eight. The 57 rebounds was the most for a Stout team since yanking down 55, Dec. 10, 2016 against the University of Dubuque. The win snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Titans, dating back to Feb. 6, 2016, a 59-52 win at Oshkosh. | Game Story and Statistics

SCOUTING UW-RIVER FALLS

  • The Falcons are looking for their first conference win of the season and are trying to break a seven game skid that started in late November. The Falcons are led by Brianna Koop with 12.2 points and Jenna Zeman with 11.7 points. Taylor Crissinger comes off the bench to lead the team in rebounds with 5.7. Sydney Hein leads the team's outside game and currently leads the WIAC in most 3-pointers made per game in 2.15, just one-hundredth of a point more than UW-Stout's Liz Oswald who is averaging 2.14.As a team, the Falcons are averaging 65.1 points and giving up 71.4.
  • River Falls welcomes Blake DuDonis as its new head coach. He was most recently a national evaluator for Blue Star Basketball and an advanced regional scout for the WNBA's Washington Mystics. Sophomore guard Jenna Zeman led the 2018-19 squad with 10.7 points per game, 62 assists and 50 steals, while senior forward Crystal Pearson finished second with 115 rebounds and 51 assists.   | Statistics

THE FALCONS LAST TIME OUT

  • UW-River Falls fell to UW-Whitewater at home 73-41. Cassie Heinrichs and Sydney Hein led the Falcons with seven points each.  The Falcons made 14-52 shots (26.9 percent) from the floor in the loss. They went 5-19 from behind the arc (26.3 percent), and hit 8-9 free throws (88.9 percent).  The Falcons were held scoreless in the third quarter.  | Game Story and Statistics

LAST YEAR WHEN STOUT AND RIVER FALLS MET

  • The Blue Devils swept River Falls, winning 76-64 in Menomonie and 76-55 in River Falls.
  • UW-Stout held a 44-26 halftime lead, but UW-River Falls held Stout scoreless for the first six minutes of the third quarter, then cut Stout's lead to four points, 48-44, with 1:31 left in the period, but the Blue Devils hung on for a 12-point 76-64 win over the Falcons Jan. 16, 2019, on Dewey Mintz Court in Johnson Fieldhouse.  Kyncaide Diedrich scored her third double-double of the season, finishing with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Liz Oswald tallied 15 points, Bailey Diersen 14 and Shannan Watkins 13. Crystal Pearson was one rebound short of a double-double, matching Diedrich's 18 points. Jenna Zeman finished with 12 points.
  • UW-Stout led 16-14 at the end of the first period, but jumped all over UW-River Falls by outscoring the Falcons 23-3 in the second period to take a 39-17 halftime lead on their way to a 76-55 win Jan. 31, 2019. Diedrich led all scorers with 18 points. SCOUTING UW-WHITEWATER

  • The Warhawks are ranked sixth in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 poll and in the latest WBCA Top 25 poll.. Whitewater's only loss of the season came to now fifth-ranked DePauw University, a 70-69 overtime loss, Nov. 16, and the Warhawks have won 12 in a row. The Warhawks are second in the league in scoring with 71.4 points and lead the league in points allowed with 52.1 points, giving the Warhawks a winning margin of plus-19.3 points. The Warhawks lead the league in blocked shots (32nd NCAA) with 70 total, with Johanna Taylor and Abby Belschner first and second, respectively, in the WIAC. Taylor averages 1.33 and Beschner 1.27. Becky Raeder leads the team in scoring with 13.3 points and averages 2.8 assists. Taylor is fourth in the WIAC in rebounds at 6.7 per game. 
  • Whitewater has compiled at least 20 victories in 10 of the last 12 seasons and returns junior guard Emily Schumacher. She recorded a team-high 12.0 points per contest, 126 field goals made and 58 three-point field goals made during the 2018-19 campaign. Senior guard Becky Raeder distributed a team-best 63 assists and finished third with 9.0 points per game.  | Statistics
WARHAWKS LAST TIME OUT
  • Whitewater women's basketball team defeated UW-La Crosse 66-52 on Wednesday night, extending their winning streak to 12 games. Becky Raeder and Johanna Taylor each registered 14 points to lead the offensive drive. Taylor also recorded a team-high 10 rebounds, followed by Grundahl and Belschner who each grabbed eight.   • Whitewater built on a double-digit halftime lead by holding UW-River Falls without a point for more than 15 minutes during a 73-41 victory in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest in River Falls. Freshman forward Aleah Grundahl led a group of four Warhawks in double figures with 14 points on 7-of-14 shooting. Sophomore guard Veronica Kieres 12 points and six rebounds.Senior guard Becky Raeder and junior guard Rebekah Schumacher posted 10 points apiece.  | Game Story and Statistics
LAST YEAR WHEN STOUT AND WHITEWATER MET
  • The teams split last season with Stout taking a 78-68 win in Menomonie and Whitewater defending their court with a 74-60 win. 
  • Amber Fabeck stepped outside and scored a career-high 24 points to lead UW-Stout to a 78-68 win over UW-Whitewater, Jan. 9, 2019, on Dewey Mintz Court in Johnson Fieldhouse. Fabeck, a Blue Devils 6-3 post player, drained three consecutive 3-point attempts in the first half to help Stout to a 39-35 halftime lead with 15 first half points. Fabeck hit another trey in the second half, knocking down 4 of 6 attempts from beyond the arc and 9 of 20 from the floor. The Warhawks had four players score in double figures, led by Emily Schumacher's 17 points.   • Whitewater limited UW-Stout to 33 percent shooting from the field and took a 74-60 win over the Blue Devils Feb. 9, 2019, in Whitewater. The Blue Devils led briefly to open the game, but Whitewater led at the quarter, 23-19, and 40-34 at halftime and never trailed after the 6:53 mark of the first period. Stout's Kyncaide Diedrich led all scorers with 19 points. Bailey Diersen added 15 and Amber Fabeck 13. The Warhawks (16-7, 9-3 WIAC) extended their winning streak to eight games and were led by Emily Schumacher's 17 points. THE COACHES:
UW-STOUT:
  • Hannah Iverson (30-12) is in her second year as the head coach of the Blue Devils.
  • Prior to becoming the Blue Devils' head coach, Iverson was the director of player development for women's basketball at NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay, a position she began in October, 2016. As well as working directly with the team, Iverson managed the program's operating budget, coordinated team travel, co-directed summer camps and clinics and handled all aspects of team film. She assisted in the set-up of on-campus recruiting and coordinating official and unofficial visits for potential recruits. Iverson held a similar position - director of basketball operations - at the University of Illinois from 2014-16.
  • Iverson spent two years at NAIA member Ashford University in Clinton, Iowa, as an assistant women's basketball coach for the 2012-14 school years. Iverson was in charge of guard development in a season where she helped the Saints to the 2014 Association of Independent Institutions tournament championship, earning Ashford a berth in the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Championship tournament, the first conference title and appearance in the NAIA D-II tournament in Saints history.
  • A member of the UW-Green Bay women's basketball team from 2008-12, playing as Hannah Quilling, Iverson finished her career in the top 10 for games played as the Phoenix posted a 122-13 record over her four years. The team was 68-4 in Horizon League play and advanced to the NCAA Division I tournament four times, including one trip to the Sweet 16. She led the Horizon League in assist-to-turnover ratio in 2011-12, was sixth in steals per game and ninth in assists per game. She was also named to the Horizon League Honor Roll, earned the UW-Green Bay Chancellor's Leadership Medallion, was a two-time recipient of the UW-Green Bay University Leadership Award and the Patricia Hinckley Scholarship, and won the JoAnne Jennings Award in 2012.
  • Iverson has gotten to 30 career wins faster than any other Blue Devil basketball coach, men or women. Iverson reached her 30th win in 42 games.  Mark Thomas needed to turn around a women's basketball program that had won only two games the previous two seasons before he arrived. Thomas needed 75 games to reach 30 wins, but once he did, he kept building and became the winningest basketball coach in Blue Devil history, both men and women. On the men's side, Ray Johnson needed 59 games to reach 30 wins. Dewey Mintz needed 67 games to reach 30, John Muraski needed 63 and Eddie Andrist needed 59 games. 


UW-RIVER FALLS COACH BLAKE DUDONIS

  • Blake DuDonis is in his first year as the UW-River Falls head coach. DuDonis comes to River Falls after serving as a national evaluator for Blue Star Basketball, the oldest and largest national evaluation organization in women's basketball, and as an advanced regional scout for the WNBA's Washington Mystics. He has previously served as an assistant women's basketball coach at the University at Buffalo, Gardner-Webb University and Merrimack College..

UW-WHITEWATER COACH KERI CAROLLO

  • Keri Carollo enters her 18th season as head women's basketball coach at Whitewater. In 2017-2018 season, UW-Whitewater swept the WIAC regular season and tournament titles for the first time in program history. In 2018-2019 season, the team reached the NCAA Tournament for the 11th time in the last 12 years.
    Carollo was selected WIAC Coach of the Year for the third time in her career and Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Division III Women's Coach of the Year for the third time in 2017-18. She earned her 300th career victory on Jan. 3, when the Warhawks downed No. 3 UW-Oshkosh 54-52 on a buzzer-beating jumper by Camri Conley. Carollo guided the Warhawks to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division III Tournament semifinals in 2013 and 2014. UW-Whitewater finished as national runner-up in 2013 and in third place in 2014 to earn two of the four highest national finishes in program history. Carollo also led the team to a third-place finish in 2008, when the program made its first of seven consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament.


CONFERENCE: UW-Stout is a member of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-Eau Claire. UW-Oshkosh, UW-La Crosse, UW-Stevens Point, UW- Platteville, UW-River Falls, and UW-Whitewater.
