PLATTEVILLE (March 30, 2019) - The last time these two teams met to close out the WIAC season, UW-Stout and UW-Platteville combined for 90 runs and 125 hits over four games. That is unlikely to happen this time around as the Blue Devils and the Pioneers opened the conference season Saturday as the teams split at Kendalll-Murray field, with Stout winning the opener, 2-1, in 11 innings and the Pioneers coming back for a 5-2 nightcap win.
In the opener, the Blue Devils'
Jack Donahue pitched seven inning of scoreless ball, taking a 1-0 lead in the eighth inning before the Pioneers (5-9, 1-1 WIAC) tied the game on a Jonathan Kel double.
The Blue Devils (6-3, 1-1 WIAC) left a runner on third base in the 10th, but in the top of the 11th,
Hunter Merrill reached on a single and
Danny Deis came in to run.
Kasey Bass drew a walk and
Caleb Hurt loaded the bases when he reached safely on an infield error.
Jack Hemsath scored Deis, and the eventual winning run, with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Donahue, who allowed seven hits, struck out four, walked four and gave up the one earned run, game way to
Jace Baumann in the ninth inning. Baumann allowed runners in each of the final three innings, and got out of a jam in the 11th. With a runner on third base and one out, Baumann forced a foul ball pop up to catcher
Alex Jinkins and a groundout to third base to end the game.
Baumann allowed three hits and had one strikeout, but it was big strikeout.when he got a called third strike for the final out in the 10th inning with two runners on base to record his first collegiate win.
Bass was 3-for-3 with an RBI to lead Stout. Bass drove in Stout's first run of the day, a double in the first inning to bring
Jordan Wilson, who reached on a one out double to left centerfield.
Reid Akerman was 2-for-4.
Platteville had 10 total hits to nine for Stout. Stout left nine batters on base, while Platteville left 10. Mitchell Susa was 3-for-5 to lead the Pioneers. Ben Espinoza and Curtis Barsness each had two in four at-bats.
In the nightcap, the Pioneers scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take their first lead of the day. The Blue Devils cut the lead in half when
Alex Jinkins scored from third on a wild pitch. The Pioneers added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, and added another run in the seventh. Stout added a final run in the top of the ninth, and pounded out three hits in the inning and scored when Deis drove in a run with a two-out pinch hit single down the left side. Stout left two runners on the bags.
Platteville outhit Stout 8-6 in the game.
Kyle Hamilton was 2-for-4 to lead Stout. Platteville pitcher Tyler Vogel struckout 11 Blue Devils and Stout ended with 13 total strikeouts. Four Stout pitchers combined for nine strikeouts.
The teams today combined 10 runs and 33 hits. First pitch for Sunday, March 31 is scheduled again for noon.
