A LOOK AT UW-STOUT:
  • The 16 wins by the Blue Devils is their most since the 2009-10 season when Stout finished 16-11, 10-6 in the WIAC. In conference play, the Blue Devils went 7-9 during the 2013-14 season, the last time Stout qualified to the WIAC post-season tournament. .
  • Bailey Diersen leads the Blue Devils in scoring with an 17.2 per game average and is second in the WIAC. Diersen has scored in double digits in 17 of the 20 games she has played this year and seven times has scored 20 or more points in a game. The senior guard leads the team and is first in the WIAC in steals with 72, swiping 10 against Martin Luther College, one short of the 20-year-old school record of 11, notching her first double-double (19 pts, 10 steals) of the season. Diersen had seven steals against UW-Whitewater and seven against Berea. Diersen is averaging a league-best 3.60 steals per game, tied for 16th in the NCAA Division III. Thirteen times this season, Diersen has had three or more steals in a game.
  • Kyncaide Diedrich is currently averaging 15.6 points per contest, second on the team and thirdin the WIAC. Diedrich recorded her fifth double-double of the season, Feb.6 against UW-Eau Claire.. Previously, Diedrich recorded two double-doubles this season, both with 19 points and 10 rebounds, against St. Olaf College and Berea College. Diedrich has scored in double figures in 19 games and has scored 20 or more points this season four times. Diedrich was named the MVP at the North Park University tournament, tossing in 21 points in a win over Albion College, then 19 points against Berea College. Diedrich was selected as the UW-Stout/Toppers Athlete of the Week, as the WIAC Athlete of the Week and to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week. She is second in the league in assists, averaging 3.77. She leads the team in rebounds with 6.9, sixth in the WIAC.
  • Amber Fabeck has not just been delivering points in the paint, but has shown a penchant for the 3-point shot. In a 10-point win over UW-Whitewater, Fabeck stepped out from underneath the basket and drained four consecutive 3-point shots and finished the game with a career-high 24 points. Twice this season Fabeck has scored 22 points, and scored 23 against UW-Eau Claire, Feb. 6. Fabeck is fourth on the team in 3-pointers made (18-53) Fabeck collected her first career double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds against Albion College. Fabeck is averaging 13.4 points and 5.0 rebounds. Fabeck is fifth in the WIAC in blocked shots with 20.
  • Within minutes of each other, both Diedrich and Diersen surpassed 1000 career points in the game at UW-Superior. Diersen now has 1170 points and is currently seventh on the UW-Stout all-time scoring list. Diedrich now has 1185 career points and is fifth on the all-time list. Diedrich became the 11th Blue Devil women's basketball player to break 1000 career points and Diersen became the 12th player to reach the milestone. Here are the Top 10 Blue Devil scorers: 1.   • Shannan Watkins had an impact on the Blue Devils game when she returned to the floor after missing more than a season and a half due to injury. The guard from Hoover, Ala., missed one game this season, but bounced back to score a season-high 12 points against Crown. Watkins is averaging 8.1 points and 2.9 rebounds. Watkins scored 11 points in the season opener and has scored in double digits in 10 games. Watkins has matched her uniform number (11) in points scored six times this season.
  • Diersen (28), Diedrich (23), Fabeck (18) and Watkins (11) scored all 80 points in Stout's first loss of the season at UW-Superior, Dec. 30. The 86-80 loss to Superior marked the second-most points the Blue Devils have scored this season (83 vs. Crown) and by far the most points they have given up. The previous number of pints given up was 66 points the previous outing to St.Scholastica (W 78-66).
  • Liz Oswald has started all 22 games at point guard and broke out for a career-best 22 points against Crown. Oswald's previous career scoring high was nine points, a mark she hit early in the season against Hamline University. Oswald has scored in double digits the last three games. This season, she is averaging 7.2 points and a team-high 32.5 minutes played, fourth in the WIAC.
  • Senior Carolyn Feddema has started all 21 games this season and is averaging 3.6 rebounds per contest and scored a season-high 10 points against UW-Platteville in early January. Feddema started 19 games during her sophomore season.
  • Six players - Diedrich, Fabeck, Oswald, Feddema, Becky Fesenmaier and LIzzy Olsem - have played in all 21 games. Diedrich, Fabeck, Oswald and Feddema have started all 21. With the exception of two games, the Blue Devils have had the same starting line-up and have had only two starting line-up combinations.
  • As a team, the Blue Devils are averaging 70.5 points and giving up 63.0. Stout's biggest offensive outburst this year came against Crown in an 83-40 win. Stout lowest output was in a loss to UW-Oshkosh, 81-54.
  • The Blue Devils are outscoring their opponents in every quarter. The final two quarters are the teams' strongest quarters. Stout is outscoring their opponents 352-316 (16.2-14.4) in the opening quarter, 356-335 (16.2-15.2) in the second quarter, 403-373 (18.3-17.0) in the third. and 431-348 (19.6-15.8) in the final quarter . Stout was outscored 14-8 in their only overtime period.
  • Bailey Diersen had 10 steals against Martin Luther, one short of Cindy Hovet's 1991 school record of 11, and seven against Berea College and UW-Whitewater. Stout has a decided advantage over their opponents in steals, nabbing 234 to their opponents' 130.
  • While the Blue Devils saw their winning streak stop at 10 games in the end of December, they are still off to one of the best starts in school history. The 1995-96 team season opened the year at 9-0. Stout's best record to start the season was 13-0 to open the 1992-93 season. The 10-game winning streak also matched a mid-season 10-game winning streak during the 2005-06 season. With 14 wins, the Blue Devils are assured of at least a .500 season for the first time since the 2009-10 season.

A PRESEASON LOOK AT UW-STOUT:
  • The Blue Devils return 13 players from last year's squad and bring in four players new to the program, one transfer and three freshmen.
  • The Blue Devils return three seniors - Kyncaide Diedrich (Athens), Bailey Diersen (Greenville) and Carolyn Feddema (Buffalo, Minn).
  • Diedrich, the league's leading scorer last season with 15.9 points per game, was a first team All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) pick, as well as being selected to the all-defensive team. Diedrich was third in the WIAC in rebounds and third in steals.
  • Diersen earned honorable mention honors, just trailing Diedrich in points scored at 15.2 points and led the WIAC in steals with 2.44. Diedrich hit 33 3-pointers and Diersen 27 to lead the team.
  • Feddema has been a steady player for the Blue Devils throughout her career, getting onto the court in 75 of 76 possible games over her career, averaging anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes per game.
  • After more than a year out due to injury, Shannan Watkins returns, adding another experienced player to the lineup. Watkins averaged almost seven points during the 2015-16 season and was scoring more than 10 points when she went down nine games into the 2016-17 season.
  • Expect to see Becky Fesenmaier, junior college transfer Kelsey Krainz, Kara Griswold, Keysha Hazelton and Katie Sukanen see time in the guard positions, along with Lexi Todd, Shayna Hohlfelder and Gina Palasz.
  • Underneath the basket, Amber Fabeck acclimated herself to the conference last year and, at 6-foot-3, stretches her post position. After transferring to Stout from the University of Sioux Falls last season, Fabeck averaged 8.5 points and 5.1 rebounds. Only Diedrich and Diersen connected on more 3-pointers, as Fabeck drained 23 of 65 3-pointers at a .354 clip. Fabeck was third in the league in blocked shots with 31.
  • In addition to Fabeck playing underneath, Lizzy Olsem, Emily Jacques and Maddy Otto will patrol the paint.

CONFERENCE STANDINGS:
  • The Blue Devils are projected to finish seventh in the WIAC according to a WIAC preseason poll by conference coaches and sports information directors. UW-Whitewater was picked to finish first, UW-Eau Claire second, UW-Oshkosh third, UW-La Crosse fourth, UW-Stevens Point fifth, UW-River Falls sixth and UW-Platteville eighth.

STOUT LAST TIME OUT:
  • UW-Stout outscored UW-Eau Claire 28-11 to in the third quarter to throw off a nine-point halftime deficit and went on to a 74-61 win over the Blugolds Wednesday on Dewey Mintz Court in Johnson Fieldhouse. After Eau Claire (13-9, 4-7 WIAC) widened the lead to 39-28 to open the third quarter, the Blue Devils went on a 10-0 run to pull to within one point as Carolyn Feddema made a bucket, followed by 3-point shots by Liz Oswald and Amber Fabeck. Bailey Diersen stole the ball and scored the basket to pull Stout to 39-38. Eau Claire toyed with a lead until Stout (16-6, 6-5 WIAC) took the lead for good on a basket by Amber Fabeck to put the Blue Devils up 49-47. Stout closed out the period on a 7-1 run and led 56-48 at the break. In the fourth, Stout ran out to as much as a 12 point lead, but Eau Claire did get as close as five points with just over four minutes remaining. The Blue Devils put the lid on the game by holding Eau Claire to two points the rest of the way. The Blue Devils were led by Fabeck's 23 points, 17 in the second half andone point short of a career-best. Kyncaide Diedrich notched her fifth double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds.   • The Blue Devils defeated UW-River Falls, 76-55, Jan. 31, then lost to 12th ranked UW-Oshkosh, 81-67, Feb. 2.
  • UW-Platteville shot out to an 11-4 first period lead and it only got worse for UW-Stout as the Pioneers went on to take as much as a 24 point lead in the third quarter before the Blue Devils stormed back to pull to within four points late in the game. The Pioneers pulled away down the stretch making 8 of 10 free throws in the final 1:14 of the game to earn a 78-68 win Saturday at Johnson Fieldhouse. | Game Story and Statistics
  • When UW-Stout defeated UW-Eau Claire at Zorn Arena five days earlier, it looked like the Blue Devils had perhaps shaken off their road demons. But the road woes resumed Wednesday as UW-Stevens Point sent the Blue Devils packing with a 77-69 decision at Berg Gym Jan. 23. | Game Story and Statistics

SCOUTING UW-EAU CLAIRE
  • The Blugolds have the conference's leading scorer in Hailee Hoeppner, who is averaging 18.2 points per contest, and has led the team in scoring 10 times this season, including a 36 point performance against Stout earlier this season. Kelsey Bakken is averaging 15.7 points per contest and has been the Blugolds' leading scorer in six of the Blugolds' conference games this season. Katie Essen is tossing in 12.2 points. Bakken and Hoeppner are the team's leading rebounders with Bakken averaging 7.7 boards and Hoeppner 7.7. Eau Claire has the league's leading offensive with 70.6 points per contest. The Blugolds give up 63.7 points. As a team, the Blugolds lead the league in free throw percentage (.731), field goal percentage (.433) and 3-point percentage (.349). Maddie Dunathan is leading the league in assists by a wide margin, dishing off 6.57 per game, ranking seventh nationally.. | 2018-19 Statistics

THE BLUGOLDS LAST TIME OUT
  • The Blugolds are looking to snap a five-game losing streak after falling to UW-Platteville, 81-66, Monday and 68-55 to UW-Whitewater Saturday.
  • UW-Platteville would not let UW-Eau Claire get anything going as the host Pioneers raced out to a 25-6 first quarter lead. The Blugolds would not get any closer that 11 points the rest of the way. The conference's leading scorer, Hallee Hoeppner was held to seven points.   • Eau Claire dropped their fourth straight on Saturday, falling to UW-Whitewater, 68-55. The Warhawks held an early lead but the Blugolds kept it close, only down 19-14 at the end of the first quarter. Back-to-back jumpers by Brooke Harris and Kelsey Bakken gave Eau Claire their first lead, 20-19 early in the second. The two squads would trade baskets the rest of the quarter until Whitewater drained two three's and a jumper to close out the half and take a 35-28 lead into the locker room. In the second half, the Blugolds would go nearly four minutes without a score and the Warhawks would maintain their lead the rest of the way for the win. | Game Story and Statistics

WHEN STOUT AND EAU CLAIRE LAST MET
  • UW-Stout trailed UW-Eau Claire for the majority of the first three quarters, but it didn't rattle the Blue Devils, who came back to down the Blugolds, 81-76, at Zorn Arena Saturday. Eau Claire led at the end of the first quarter, 16-15, and again at halftime, 34-31. But behind a combined 17 points by Bailey Diersen and Kyncaide Diedrich, the Blue Devils held a 54-52 lead at the end of the third quarter. The teams traded leads through the early part of the final period until Kyncaide Diedrich hit a 3-pointer - one of 11 treys on the night for the Blue Devils - with 4:40 left. Stout eventually built up a 12 point lead when Amber Fabeck hit a lay-up and followed that up with four free throws. Diersen scored a team-high 27 points, one point short of her career-best, and matched a career-best eight rebounds. Diedrich contributed 20 points. Fabeck scored 14 points and Liz Oswald 10. SCOUTING UW-WHITEWATER

  • After losing three of the their first four conference games, the Warhawks have proven to be one of the most resilient teams in the league and have won the last seven games to move into third place in the WIAC. The Warhawks have handed front-runner UW-Oshkosh two losses. The Warhawks are getting 12.0 points from Emily Schumacher and 11.0 points from Olivia Freckmann. With the exception of one game, either Schumacher or Freckmann have led the team in scoring in each conference game. Freckmann has been dominating on the boards, pulling down double digit rebounds the last five of the last six games. She is averaging 9.3 boards on the season and 11.0 rebounds in conference play. Freckmann pulled down 17 boards against UW-La Crosse in the first round of conference play and had 16 rebounds against UW-Eau Claire Saturday. She shifted gears in a 12 point win at Stevens Point Wednesday, scoring a game-high 27 points.

THE WARHAWKS LAST TIME OUT
  • Whitewater continued its strong play Wednesday night, besting UW-Stevens Point 70-58 in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference affair in Stevens Point, Wis. The Warhawks (15-7 overall, 8-3 WIAC) shot 47.2 percent from the floor and held advantages in points off turnovers (16-14) and second-chance points (19-13) to extend their winning streak to seven games and remain one game behind first-place UW-Oshkosh in the league standings. Senior forward Olivia Freckmann registered a career-high 27 points on 13-of-16 shooting (81.3 percent), the 13th-highest shooting percentage in one game in program history, minimum 10 attempts.   • The Warhawks defeated UW-Oshkosh, 78-70 in overtime, Monday, and downed UW-Eau Claire, 68-55, Saturday,
  • The Warhawks are at UW-Stevens Point, Wednesday, Feb. 6.
  • The Warhawks defeated nationally-ranked UW-Oshkosh, 78-70, Monday, for the second time this season, the only team to defeat the Titans in conference play. After trailing for nearly the entire game, Camri Conley stole the ball and layed in the basket with 36 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.   • Whitewater women's basketball team led almost wire-to-wire Saturday afternoon in a 68-55 victory over UW-Eau Claire in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest at Kachel Gymnasium. The Warhawks extended their winning streak to five games by holding the Blugolds to 35 percent shooting from the floor, finishing with a 37-27 rebounding advantage and collecting nine blocks. | Game Story and Statistics

LAST TIME STOUT AND WHITEWATER MET
  • Amber Fabeck stepped outside and scored a career-high 24 points to lead UW-Stout to a 78-68 win over UW-Whitewater, Jan. 9, on Dewey Mintz Court in Johnson Fieldhouse. Fabeck, a Blue Devils 6-3 post player, drained three consecutive 3-point attempts in the first half to help Stout to a 39-35 halftime lead with 15 first half points. Fabeck hit another trey in the second half, knocking down 4 of 6 attempts from beyond the arc and 9 of 20 from the floor. The Blue Devils trailed only briefly, and that came midway through the first quarter and that was by only one point. Stout held a 22-13 first quarter lead behind eight points by Fabeck. The Warhawks got as close as two points several times in the second quarter, and outscored the Blue Devils 22-17 in the stanza. Fabeck, Bailey Diersen and Kyncaide Diedrich each scored five third quarter points and Liz Oswald dropped in four points in the period. The Warhawks pulled to within 54-50 on a 3-pointer by Emily Schumacher late in the period, but the Blue Devils stretched the lead to eight points with two buckets by Oswald, and baskets by Diersen and Diedrich. Whitewater got only as close as seven points a couple of times in the fourth period. Diersen finished the night with 19 points and Diedrich 14 points. Diedrich also pulled down nine rebounds. Stout shot 38.1 percent (24-63) from the floor for the game, 40 percent (6-15) from 3-point range and 75 percent (24-32) from the free throw line. Diedrich scored 10 of her points from the line and Diersen recorded seven from the charity stripe. Diersen recorded seven steals as Stout forced 20 Warhawk turnovers. THE COACHES:
UW-STOUT:
  • Hannah Iverson (16-6) is in her first year as the head coach of the Blue Devils.
  • Prior to becoming the Blue Devils' head coach, Iverson was the director of player development for women's basketball at NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay, a position she began in October, 2016. As well as working directly with the team, Iverson managed the program's operating budget, coordinated team travel, co-directed summer camps and clinics and handled all aspects of team film. She assisted in the set-up of on-campus recruiting and coordinating official and unofficial visits for potential recruits. Iverson held a similar position - director of basketball operations - at the University of Illinois from 2014-16.
  • Iverson spent two years at NAIA member Ashford University in Clinton, Iowa, as an assistant women's basketball coach for the 2012-14 school years. Iverson was in charge of guard development in a season where she helped the Saints to the 2014 Association of Independent Institutions tournament championship, earning Ashford a berth in the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Championship tournament, the first conference title and appearance in the NAIA D-II tournament in Saints history.
  • A member of the UW-Green Bay women's basketball team from 2008-12, playing as Hannah Quilling, Iverson finished her career in the top 10 for games played as the Phoenix posted a 122-13 record over her four years. The team was 68-4 in Horizon League play and advanced to the NCAA Division I tournament four times, including one trip to the Sweet 16. She led the Horizon League in assist-to-turnover ratio in 2011-12, was sixth in steals per game and ninth in assists per game. She was also named to the Horizon League Honor Roll, earned the UW-Green Bay Chancellor's Leadership Medallion, was a two-time recipient of the UW-Green Bay University Leadership Award and the Patricia Hinckley Scholarship, and won the JoAnne Jennings Award in 2012.

UW-EAU CLAIRE

  • Tonja Englund (328-189, 19th) enters her 19th season as head women's basketball coach in 2018-2019 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The Blugolds finished off their 2017-2018 season tied for second in the WIAC with a 9-5 record, and a 18-9 record overall. The Blugolds once again played one of the toughest schedules in the nation, ranking 11th out of 444 Division Three teams in strength of schedule. Entering the 2018-2019 season Englund's 315 wins ranks third most in WIAC history. In 2015-16 Englund became UW-Eau Claire's winningest women's basketball coach. Englund has four WIAC Championships in her tenure (2001,2003,2008,2012) as well as five NCAA tournament appearances. Englund's 2002-2003 season holds the school's single season record for number of wins (32-2), earning her WIAC Coach of the Year and NCAA Russell Athletic/WBCA National Coach of Year. The Blugolds took 3rd place in the nation that year.

UW-WHITEWATER COACH KERI CAROLLO

  • Keri Carollo (324-145, 17th) enters her 17th season as head women's basketball coach at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 2018-19. UW-Whitewater enters the season after claiming back-to-back Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament championships. The team swept the WIAC regular season and tournament titles for the first time in program history in 2017-18 and reached the NCAA Tournament for the 10th time in the last 11 years, hosting the first two rounds at Kachel Gymnasium. Carollo was selected WIAC Coach of the Year for the third time in her career and Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Division III Women's Coach of the Year for the third time in 2017-18. She earned her 300th career victory on Jan. 3, when the Warhawks downed No. 3 UW-Oshkosh 54-52 on a buzzer-beating jumper by Camri Conley. Carollo was an assistant coach at Stout from 1999-2002.
STOUT IN THE WIAC TOURNAMENT: Overall, UW-Stout is 19-10 in the WIAC Championship tournament. Stout is 11-3 in the first round, 4-7 in the semi-finals and 4-0 in the finals. The Pointers hold a 3-2 lead when the teams have met in the tournament. CONFERENCE: UW-Stout is a member of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-Eau Claire. UW-Oshkosh, UW-La Crosse, UW-Stevens Point, UW- Platteville, UW-River Falls, and UW-Whitewater.

UP NEXT: The Blue Devils enter the last week of the regular season by hosting UW-Stevens Point, Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. for Senior Night, then will travel to UW-La Crosse, Saturday, Feb. 16 for a 3 p.m. contest with the Eagles to close out the regular season.
