THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (17-7, 7-6 WIAC) will play the final regular season game in a remarkable turnaround season where the program went from no wins in conference play to at least seven conference wins. UW-Stout has secured the fourth seed in the WIAC tournament, the first home conference tournament game since the 2013-14 season. The 17 wins are the most wins in a single season since the 2007-08 season when Stout went 17-10. The Blue Devils will close out the regular season with the same team they started the conference season with -
UW-La Crosse (20-4, 9-4 WIAC), by traveling to La Crosse Saturday, Feb. 16 for a 3 p.m. contest with the Eagles. Coming off their first loss of the season, Stout opened the conference season with a 73-65 win over the Eagles at Johnson Fieldhouse Jan. 2. The loss was the Eagles' first loss of the season and La Crosse has lost only three more times throughout the season and have secured the third spot in the WIAC tournanment next Wednesday. A LOOK AT UW-STOUT:
- Bailey Diersen leads the Blue Devils in scoring with a 17.8 per game average and is second in the WIAC. Diersen has scored in double digits in 19 of the 22 games she has played this year and eight times has scored 20 or more points in a game. Diersen scored a career-high 33 points in a win over UW-Stevens Point, Feb. 13. The senior guard leads the team and is first in the WIAC in steals with 80 (3.64/g), swiping 10 against Martin Luther College, one short of the 20-year-old school record of 11, notching her first double-double (19 pts, 10 steals) of the season. Diersen had seven steals against UW-Whitewater and seven against Berea. Diersen is averaging a league-best 3.64steals per game, 16th in the NCAA Division III. Fourteen times this season, Diersen has had three or more steals in a game.
- Kyncaide Diedrich is averaging 15.5 points per contest, second on the team and third in the WIAC. Diedrich recorded her fifth double-double of the season, Feb. 6 against UW-Eau Claire, recording back-to-back double-doubles.. Previously, Diedrich recorded two double-doubles this season, both with 19 points and 10 rebounds, against St. Olaf College and Berea College. Diedrich has scored in double figures in 22 games and has scored 20 or more points this season five times. Diedrich was named the MVP at the North Park University tournament, tossing in 21 points in a win over Albion College, then 19 points against Berea College. Diedrich was selected as the UW-Stout/Toppers Athlete of the Week, as the WIAC Athlete of the Week and to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week. She is second in the league in assists, averaging 3.58. She leads the team in rebounds with 7.1 sixth in the WIAC.
- Amber Fabeck has not just been delivering points in the paint, but has shown a penchant for the 3-point shot. In a 10-point win over UW-Whitewater in January, Fabeck stepped out from underneath the basket and drained four consecutive 3-point shots and finished the game with a career-high 24 points. Twice this season Fabeck has scored 22 points and for times has scored more than 20 points. Fabeck is fourth on the team in 3-pointers made (21-63) Fabeck collected her first career double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds against Albion College. Fabeck is averaging 13.3 points and 4.9 rebounds. Fabeck is fifth in the WIAC in blocked shots with 22.
- Within minutes of each other, both Diedrich and Diersen surpassed 1000 career points in the game at UW-Superior. Diedrich now has 1227 points and is currently sixth on the UW-Stout all-time scoring list. Diersen now has 1231 career points and is tied for fourth on the all-time list. Diedrich became the 11th Blue Devil women's basketball player to break 1000 career points and Diersen became the 12th player to reach the milestone. Here are the Top 10 Blue Devil scorers: 1. - Shannan Watkins, who came to the Blue Devils' program the same year as Diedrich, Diersen and Feddema, missed a season and a half due to injury. Watkins has had an impact on the Blue Devils game when she returned to the floor this season.The guard from Hoover, Ala., missed one game this season, but bounced back to score a season-high 12 points against Crown. Watkins is averaging 8.1 points and 3.0 rebounds. Watkins scored 11 points in the season opener and has scored in double digits in 10 games. Watkins has matched her uniform number (11) in points scored six times this season.
- Diersen (28), Diedrich (23), Fabeck (18) and Watkins (11) scored all 80 points in Stout's first loss of the season at UW-Superior, Dec. 30. The 86-80 loss to Superior marked the second-most points the Blue Devils have scored this season (83 vs. Crown) and by far the most points they have given up. The previous number of pints given up was 66 points the previous outing to St.Scholastica (W 78-66).
- Liz Oswald has started all 24 games at point guard and broke out for a career-best 22 points against Crown. Oswald's previous career scoring high was nine points, a mark she hit early this season against Hamline University. This season, she is averaging 6.9 points and a team-high 32.1 minutes played, fourth in the WIAC.
- Senior Carolyn Feddema has started all 24 games this season and is averaging 3.5 rebounds per contest and scored a season-high 10 points against UW-Platteville in early January. Feddema started 19 games during her sophomore season.
- Six players - Diedrich, Fabeck, Oswald, Feddema, Becky Fesenmaier and LIzzy Olsem - have played in all 24 games. Diedrich, Fabeck, Oswald and Feddema have started all 24. With the exception of two games, the Blue Devils have had the same starting line-up and have had only two starting line-up combinations.
- As a team, the Blue Devils are averaging a league-best 70.3 points and giving up 63.7. Stout's biggest offensive outburst this year came against Crown in an 83-40 win. Stout lowest output was in a loss to UW-Oshkosh, 81-54.
- The Blue Devils are outscoring their opponents in every quarter. Stout is outscoring their opponents 391-349 (16.3-14.5) in the opening quarter, 385-369 (16.0-15.4) in the second quarter, 438-400 (18.3-16,7) in the third. and 466-396 (19.4-16.5) in the final quarter . Stout was outscored 14-8 in their only overtime period.
- Bailey Diersen had 10 steals against Martin Luther, one short of Cindy Hovet's 1991 school record of 11, and seven against Berea College and UW-Whitewater. Stout has a decided advantage over their opponents in steals, nabbing 234 to their opponents' 130.
- While the Blue Devils saw their winning streak stop at 10 games in the end of December, they are still off to one of the best starts in school history. The 1995-96 team season opened the year at 9-0. Stout's best record to start the season was 13-0 to open the 1992-93 season. The 10-game winning streak also matched a mid-season 10-game winning streak during the 2005-06 season. With 14 wins, the Blue Devils are assured of at least a .500 season for the first time since the 2009-10 season.

A PRESEASON LOOK AT UW-STOUT:
- The Blue Devils return 13 players from last year's squad and bring in four players new to the program, one transfer and three freshmen.
- The Blue Devils return three seniors - Kyncaide Diedrich (Athens), Bailey Diersen (Greenville) and Carolyn Feddema (Buffalo, Minn).
- Diedrich, the league's leading scorer last season with 15.9 points per game, was a first team All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) pick, as well as being selected to the all-defensive team. Diedrich was third in the WIAC in rebounds and third in steals.
- Diersen earned honorable mention honors, just trailing Diedrich in points scored at 15.2 points and led the WIAC in steals with 2.44. Diedrich hit 33 3-pointers and Diersen 27 to lead the team.
- Feddema has been a steady player for the Blue Devils throughout her career, getting onto the court in 75 of 76 possible games over her career, averaging anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes per game.
- After more than a year out due to injury, Shannan Watkins returns, adding another experienced player to the lineup. Watkins averaged almost seven points during the 2015-16 season and was scoring more than 10 points when she went down nine games into the 2016-17 season.
- Expect to see Becky Fesenmaier, junior college transfer Kelsey Krainz, Kara Griswold, Keysha Hazelton and Katie Sukanen see time in the guard positions, along with Lexi Todd, Shayna Hohlfelder and Gina Palasz.
- Underneath the basket, Amber Fabeck acclimated herself to the conference last year and, at 6-foot-3, stretches her post position. After transferring to Stout from the University of Sioux Falls last season, Fabeck averaged 8.5 points and 5.1 rebounds. Only Diedrich and Diersen connected on more 3-pointers, as Fabeck drained 23 of 65 3-pointers at a .354 clip. Fabeck was third in the league in blocked shots with 31.
- In addition to Fabeck playing underneath, Lizzy Olsem, Emily Jacques and Maddy Otto will patrol the paint.

CONFERENCE STANDINGS:
- The Blue Devils are projected to finish seventh in the WIAC according to a WIAC preseason poll by conference coaches and sports information directors. UW-Whitewater was picked to finish first, UW-Eau Claire second, UW-Oshkosh third, UW-La Crosse fourth, UW-Stevens Point fifth, UW-River Falls sixth and UW-Platteville eighth.
STOUT LAST TIME OUT:
- Shannan Watkins was the spark, but Bailey Diersen was the fire to lead UW-Stout to a 78-68 win over UW-Stevens Point, 78-68, Wednesday on Senior Night as the Blue Devils clinched a home playoff berth. The win gave Stout their first WIAC playoff berth since the 2015-16 season, a season the Blue Devils' present seniors were freshmen, and their first home playoff game since the 2013-14 season. All three Blue Devil seniors had solid nights. Diersen was 12 of 18 from the field and hit 8 of 10 free throws for 33 points. Diersen also had six steals . Kyncaide Diedrich was one bucket short of her sixth double-double of the season, scoring eight points and pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with five steals. Carolyn Feddema had seven rebounds and a blocked shot. - The Blue Devils defeated UW-Eau Claire, 74-61, Feb. 6, then lost to perhaps the hottest team in the WIAC, UW-Whitewater, 74-60, Feb. 9.
- UW-Whitewater limited UW-Stout to 33 percent shooting from the field and took a 74-60 win over the Blue Devils Saturday in Whitewater. The Blue Devils led briefly to open the game, but Whitewater led at the quarter, 23-19, and 40-34 at halftime and never trailed after the 6:53 mark of the first period. - UW-Stout outscored UW-Eau Claire 28-11 to in third quarter to throw off a nine-point halftime deficit and went on to a 74-61 win over the Blugolds Wednesday on Dewey Mintz Court in Johnson Fieldhouse. After Eau Claire (13-9, 4-7 WIAC) widened the lead to 39-28 to open the third quarter, the Blue Devils went on a 10-0 run to pull to within one point as Carolyn Feddema made a bucket, followed by 3-point shots by Liz Oswald and Amber Fabeck. Bailey Diersen stole the ball and scored the basket to pull Stout to 39-38. Eau Claire toyed with a lead until Stout (16-6, 6-5 WIAC) took the lead for good on a basket by Amber Fabeck to put the Blue Devils up 49-47. Stout closed out the period on a 7-1 run and led 56-48 at the break. The Blue Devils were led by Fabeck's 23 points, one point short of a career-best. SCOUTING UW-STEVENS POINT
- Amber Baehman leads the Pointers in scoring with 13.3 points and 7.4 rebounds. Carly Cerrato is scoring 10.8 points, and Bailee Collins is scoring 10.2 points. The team is averaging 62.4 points per game and giving up 67.6 points. The Pointers' are currently in a three-way tie for fifth place. Collins went off for 30 points in the win over River Falls early in the season and Baehman pulled down 16 rebounds.
- UW-Stevens Point has reached double digits in wins in 28 of 29 seasons under head coach Shirley Egner, who is the winningest coach in WIAC archives with 545 victories to her credit. Junior guard Carly Cerrato made a team-best 52 three-point field goals and was second on the team with 42 steals and 10.5 points per game. Sophomore guard Brooke Geier started all 26 games and chipped in 6.7 points per game, while finishing second on the squad with 60 assists.
THE POINTERS LAST TIME OUT
- Stevens Point trailed by 10 at the end of the first quarter, but were only able to trim the deficit to seven by the end of the game in a 65-58 defeat to No. 11 UW-Oshkosh on Feb. 9. Junior Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) led all players with 17 points in the game. Sophomore Bailee Collins (Milton, Wis./Milton)added 15 points. - Stevens Point women's basketball team saw visiting UW-Whitewater widen its lead in the second and third quarters as the Pointers fell to the Warhawks, 70-58, on Feb. 6. Sophomore Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) led the Pointers with 12 points. Fellow sophomores Taylor Greenheck (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie) and Bailee Collins(Milton, Wis./Milton) were also in double digits with 11 and 10 points, respectively. WHEN STOUT AND STEVENS POINT LAST MET
- When UW-Stout defeated UW-Eau Claire at Zorn Arena, it looked like the Blue Devils had perhaps shaken off their road demons. But the road woes resumed Wednesday as UW-Stevens Point sent the Blue Devils packing with a 77-69 decision at Berg Gym. Shannan Watkins led Stout with a season-high 19 points. Amber Fabeck and Diedrich each contributed 15 points. The Pointers had four players in double figures, led by Baehman's double-double, with 20 points and 15 rebounds. SCOUTING UW-LA CROSSE
- Freshman Emma Gamoke leads the Eagles in scoring with 13.3 points. While Dani Craig is right behind at 12.3. Lexi Higgins leads in rebounds with 6.1 boards. The Eagles average 65.3 points and give up 51.7 points. It is the seventh time in school history (49 seasons) that UWL has won at least 20 games in a season and the first time since going 20-8 in 2010-11. UWL won a school record 27 games in 1980-81, finishing 27-5. The team finished 24-4 in 1978-79 and 1979-80, 22-7 in 1987-88 and 20-1 in 1976-77. THE EAGLES LAST TIME OUT
- La Crosse fell 71-62 at UW-Oshkosh Feb. 13 in Kolf Sports Center. The game featured a pair of nationally-ranked teams. The game was tied, 43-43, with 4:39 left in the third quarter when UW-Oshkosh scored six of the next seven points for a 49-44 advantage with 3:14 remaining. The Titans led, 53-50, after three quarters. Delaney Schoenenberger's layup with 5:50 left in the game forced a 58-58 tie when UW-Oshkosh went on a 7-1 run to lead 65-59 with 2:53 remaining on a Chloe Pustina 3-pointer. Emma Gamoke's 3-pointer with 2:26 remaining cut the lead to 65-62, but the Eagles could get no closer the rest of the game as the Titans went six-of-six at the free throw line in the final :21. UWL shot 46.8% from the field Wednesday, including 33.3% (six-of-18) from three-point range, and 70.6% (12-of-17) at the free throw line. - La Crosse earned a 62-50 victory at UW-Eau Claire Saturday afternoon in Zorn Arena. The Eagles, ranked 25th on this week's D3hoops.com Poll, improve to 20-3 overall and 9-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Blugolds drop to 13-10 overall and 4-8 in the conference. It is the seventh time in school history (49 seasons) that UWL has won at least 20 games in a season and the first time since going 20-8 in 2010-11. WHEN LA CROSSE AND STOUT LAST MET
- The Blue Devils broke an 18-game conference losing streak with a hard-fought 73-65 win over previously undefeated UW-La Crosse in the conference opener Jan. 2. The Blue Devils snapped a five-game losing streak to the Eagles with the victory. Both teams come out of the game at 11-1 overall. Stout was able to jump to as much as a 10-point lead in the first quarter, and held a five-point 32-27 halftime lead. The Eagles tied the game midway through the third period and jumped ahead by three points, 49-46, on a jumper by freshman Emma Gamoke at 8:46 in the fourth quarter. Amber Fabeck pulled Stout to within one point at 7:24. Liz Oswald followed up with a 3-pointer to give Stout a 51-49 lead with 6:40 remaining in the period and the momentum for the rest of the game. Bailey Diersen hit a pair of 3-pointers and a 2-pointer to keep La Crosse at bay. Stout took a six point, 61-55, lead at 3:04 when Amber Fabeck tipped a missed Eagles' 3-pointer to Shannan Watkins, who went the distance, dribbled behind her back and split two La Crosse defenders under the basket to score the lay-in. The Eagles Delaney Schoenenberger cut the lead to four, but Watkins answered back with a layin. Dani Craig cut the lead again to four, but Watkins canned a 3-pointer for a seven point lead at 1:21 and La Crosse would only get as close as six points the rest of the way. Stout made seven free throws down the stretch - four by Oswald. Oswald and Watkins scored seven points apiece in the fourth quarter. THE COACHES:
UW-STOUT:
- Hannah Iverson (17-7) is in her first year as the head coach of the Blue Devils.
- Prior to becoming the Blue Devils' head coach, Iverson was the director of player development for women's basketball at NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay, a position she began in October, 2016. As well as working directly with the team, Iverson managed the program's operating budget, coordinated team travel, co-directed summer camps and clinics and handled all aspects of team film. She assisted in the set-up of on-campus recruiting and coordinating official and unofficial visits for potential recruits. Iverson held a similar position - director of basketball operations - at the University of Illinois from 2014-16.
- Iverson spent two years at NAIA member Ashford University in Clinton, Iowa, as an assistant women's basketball coach for the 2012-14 school years. Iverson was in charge of guard development in a season where she helped the Saints to the 2014 Association of Independent Institutions tournament championship, earning Ashford a berth in the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Championship tournament, the first conference title and appearance in the NAIA D-II tournament in Saints history.
- A member of the UW-Green Bay women's basketball team from 2008-12, playing as Hannah Quilling, Iverson finished her career in the top 10 for games played as the Phoenix posted a 122-13 record over her four years. The team was 68-4 in Horizon League play and advanced to the NCAA Division I tournament four times, including one trip to the Sweet 16. She led the Horizon League in assist-to-turnover ratio in 2011-12, was sixth in steals per game and ninth in assists per game. She was also named to the Horizon League Honor Roll, earned the UW-Green Bay Chancellor's Leadership Medallion, was a two-time recipient of the UW-Green Bay University Leadership Award and the Patricia Hinckley Scholarship, and won the JoAnne Jennings Award in 2012.
UW-STEVENS POINT COACH SHIRLEY EGNER:
- Shirley Egner is in her 30th season as head coach of the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team and is the all-time winningest coach in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference history. Egner has compiled a 545-253 (.689) overall record through 29 seasons with the Pointers. Over the last 17 seasons, Coach Egner has guided the Pointers to an average of nearly 22 wins per season and the team's 391-122 record over that span is the best mark of any WIAC team. On November 16, 2014, Egner earned the 600th win of her coaching career as the Pointers defeated Martin Luther. Egner is a four-time WIAC Coach of the Year honoree, earning the award in 2003-04, 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2010-2011. In 2010, Egner was inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Egner was also named the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division III Women's Coach of the Year 2010, 2011 and 2012. In 2012-13, the Pointers posted a 24-6 record and won the WIAC Conference Tournament for the fifth consecutive season.
UW-LA CROSSE:
- Karen Middleton is in her third season as UW-La Crosse head women's basketball coach in 2018-19. She also teaches in the university's exercise sport science department. The Eagles were 16-10 overall and 9-5 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) in 2017-18 under Middleton.
STOUT IN THE WIAC TOURNAMENT: Overall, UW-Stout is 19-10 in the WIAC Championship tournament. Stout is 11-3 in the first round, 4-7 in the semi-finals and 4-0 in the finals. The Pointers hold a 3-2 lead when the teams have met in the tournament. The Pointers have won the last two tournament meetings, an 82-74 win in 2009-10 and a 76-64 win during the 2008-09 season. |
