Women's Basketball Preview: WBB to open morning doubleheader

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (6-2, 0-0 WIAC) close out the first semester of play with a morning contest, hosting the University of Dubuque (4-3, 0-2 ARC), Friday, Dec. 20 at 10:30 a.m. as part of Kid's Day: A Holiday Extravaganza. The Stout and Dubuque men's teams will play at 12:30 p.m.  The doubleheader will feature free admission and will include games and giveaways. Local elementary and middle school students are expected to be in attendance.

A LOOK AT UW-STOUT:
  • The Blue Devils have three players averaging in double figures with Shannan Watkins leading Stout with a 13.9 per game average,  Amber Fabeck is averaging 11.6 points and Liz Oswald 10.8.  Watkins, the senior guard from Hoover, Ala., scored 16 points in the season opener, then went off for a career-best 27 points against Illinois Wesleyan. Watkins nearly matched that single game total when she scored 23 points against Viterbo University, hitting 13 free throws.  Watkins leads the team in rebounds with 6.5 boards, and has recorded at least eight rebounds in the last three games. Emily Jacques is averaging 5.9 boards, with Fabeck averaging 4.8 rebounds.. Freshman Haley Yaeger is coming off the bench and is pulling down 3.8 rebounds.
  • Stout is averaging 71.4 points and are giving up 64.9
  • The Blue Devils return two starters from last season's team in Amber Fabeck, who earned all-WIAC honorable mention honors, and Liz Oswald. Fabeck averaged 13.4 points and had 5.0 rebounds. Oswald, along with Shannan Watkins, Becky Fesenmaier, Emily Jacques and Lizzy Olsem have seen considerable throughout their careers. The Blue Devils return nine players from last year and welcome nine newcomers.
  • The Blue Devils lost two all-conference players in guards Kyncaide Diedrich and Bailey Diersen and will need to replace the duo's scoring prowess. Also lost to graduation was Carolyn Feddema.
  • But Amber Fabeck, who earned All-WIAC honorable mention honors, returns. Fabeck last season averaged 13.4 points and pulled down 5.0 rebounds. Shannan Watkins returned full-time for the Blue Devils last year after missing nearly a season and a half due to injury. The senior guard from Hoover, Ala., saw action in 26 games and averaged 8.2 points. Watkins was among the leaders for the Blue Devils in scoring, assists and steals.
  • Senior Becky Fesenmaier and Emily Jacques have been contributors their first three season and Fesenmaier saw action in all 27 games last year and Jacques in 26 games. Throughout her career, Jacques played in 76 of 77 possible games. Throughout her career, Jacques has averaged 3.8 rebounds per contest. Fesenmaier has played in 74 possible games.
  • Liz Oswald and Lizzy Olsem played in all 27 games year, with Oswald starting all 27 games where she averaged 6.7 points.
  • Also returning this season are senior Kelsey Kainz, junior Keysha Hazelton and sophomore Gina Palasz.
  • Newcomers this year include junior transfer guard Molly Wampler, guards Lindsey Johnson, Courtney Crouch, Melanie Carli, Katie Christopherson, Alexa Neilitz, and Paityn Tiefs, freshman forward Haylee Yaeger and freshman center Erin O'Brien

CONFERENCE STANDINGS:
  • The Blue Devils are projected to finish fifth in the WIAC according to a WIAC preseason poll by conference coaches and sports information directors. UW-Oshkosh was picked to finish first, UW-La Crosse second, UW-Whitewater third, UW-Eau Claire fourth, UW-Platteville sixth, UW-Stevens Point seventh and UW-River Falls eighth..

STOUT LAST TIME OUT:
  • The Blue Devils lost at sixth ranked Wartburg College, 80-56, Dec. 11, and came back to defeat Viterbo University, 67-62, Dec. 14. 
  • Shannan Watkins scored 23 points and feasted at the free throw line as the UW-Stout senior nailed 13-of-15 from the free throw line to down Viterbo University, 67-62, Dec. 14.  In a contrast to the Blue Devils' last outing at nationally ranked Wartburg College, the Blue Devils took advantage at the free throw line, dropping 21 of 29 free throw attempts through the twin. Wednesday, the Blue Devils had only four free throw attempts, and those did not come until the fourth quarter. The free throws offset Stout's 3-point shooting, where the Blue Devils were 0 for 11 from beyond the arc, while the pesky V-Hawks dropped in 7 of 18.  Stout trailed 29-27 at halftime, but used a strong third period to take a two-point lead at the end of the stanza, shooting 61.5 percent, while limiting Viterbo to 27.3 percent in the frame. Amber Fabeck scored 13 points for the Blue Devils and collected a double double with 10 rebounds.   • Sixth-ranked Wartburg College pulled away in the second period aon their way to a 24-point win over the Blue Devils. Shannan Watkins scored 10 first half points, but was held scoreless in the second half. Lizzy Olsem came off the bench to lead Stout with 16 points. | Game Story and Statistics

SCOUTING UNIVERSITY OF DUBUQUE

  • The Spartans won their first three games of the season, lost the next three before rolling over the University of Rockford, 88-49, Tuesday, in Dubuque. The Spartans were picked to finish ninth in the American Rivers Conference.
  • Miah Smith was an honorable mention selection last year after averaging 9.3 rebounds as a freshman. Smith this season is collecting 9.0 rebounds per contest and is leading the ARC in the category. Smith is averaging 7.1 points and has blocked 10 shots over seven games. Freshman Tabira Thomas is the team's scoring leader, averaging 13.6 points and 4.0 rebounds. Thomas is the team leader in steals with 20 and is among the conference leaders. Junior Jaden Kelley is coming off the bench to average 11.7 points. Abigail Zurcher is averaging 11.3 points. The Spartans aveage 78.1 points per contest and five up 77.3.

SPARTANS THE LAST TIME OUT

  • Dubuque snapped a three game losing streak with an 88-49 blowout win over Rockford Tuesday, Defense was the story of the game early on, as the two teams combined for just 10 points in the opening six minutes, but it was the Spartans who had scored eight of those 10 points.  The low scoring quarter continued for the whole opening 10 minutes as the Spartans held a 16-13 after the first quarter. The second quarter was the Spartans most dominant quarter of the young season. UD scored the 15 points of the quarter to blow their lead wide open to 34-15. In all, the Spartans would outscore the Regents 35-6 in the quarter to take a 51-19 lead into halftime. The Spartans scored the first basket of the game seven seconds in and after scoring three of the four first shots of the second half, the Spartans would lead by 31 or more points for the remaining 18:24, building a lead as large as 44 points with 3:32 left in the third quarter. As expected, it was a total team effort with eight Spartans scoring five points or more, led by Lauren Griffith with 15 points out the bench. Abigail Zurcher added 13, while Kelssie Kraable also came off the bench to tack on a career-high 10 points of her own.   • Dubuque broke the 80 point mark for the fourth time in six games but fell to conference foe, Nebraska Wesleyan, 95-85. Five different Spartans reached double figures on Saturday, led by Tabria Thomas and Jaden Kelly with 15 each. 13 of Thomas' 15 points came in the first half. After scoring 12 and 10 points in the first half respectively, Abigail Zurcher and Allie Bailey each finished with 14. LAST TIME THEY MET

  • The Blue Devils hold a 5-2 lead in the series and the Blue Devils have won the last two meetings. The Spartans won two in a row, winning both during the 2014-15 season (87-62) and 2015-16 season (79-76). Stout regained the upper-hand in the series during the 2016-17 season (72-59) and won the following year in 2017-18 (84-68). The teams did not meet last season. . 
  •  Bailey Diersen scored a career-high 27 points in leading UW-Stout to an 84-68 season-opening win over the University of Dubuque, Nov. 17, 2017, at Zorn Arena in the opening game of the UW-Eau Claire Tip-Off Classic and the opening game of the season for both teams.  Diersen connected on 10-of-13 from floor, including all four 3-point attempts. She added three free throws. Diersen scored 15 points in the second half.  Kyncaide Diedrich added 17 points and collected a double-double by pulling down 10 rebounds. Anna Brown scored nine points in the second half to finish with 13 points. The Spartans took a 22-16 first quarter lead, but Stout recovered to grab a 37-33 lead by halftime by outscoring Dubuque 21-11 in the second period. Abby Meyer led the Spartans with 19 points and Morgan Boer contributed 14. As a team, Stout shot 49.2 percent (30-61) from the floor and 50 percent (12-24) from 3-point range. The Spartans were limited to 37 percent shooting (30-81).

THE COACHES:
UW-STOUT:

  • Hannah Iverson (24-11) is in her second year as the head coach of the Blue Devils. (started the season at 18-9)
  • Prior to becoming the Blue Devils' head coach, Iverson was the director of player development for women's basketball at NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay, a position she began in October, 2016. As well as working directly with the team, Iverson managed the program's operating budget, coordinated team travel, co-directed summer camps and clinics and handled all aspects of team film. She assisted in the set-up of on-campus recruiting and coordinating official and unofficial visits for potential recruits. Iverson held a similar position - director of basketball operations - at the University of Illinois from 2014-16.
  • Iverson spent two years at NAIA member Ashford University in Clinton, Iowa, as an assistant women's basketball coach for the 2012-14 school years. Iverson was in charge of guard development in a season where she helped the Saints to the 2014 Association of Independent Institutions tournament championship, earning Ashford a berth in the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Championship tournament, the first conference title and appearance in the NAIA D-II tournament in Saints history.
  • A member of the UW-Green Bay women's basketball team from 2008-12, playing as Hannah Quilling, Iverson finished her career in the top 10 for games played as the Phoenix posted a 122-13 record over her four years. The team was 68-4 in Horizon League play and advanced to the NCAA Division I tournament four times, including one trip to the Sweet 16. She led the Horizon League in assist-to-turnover ratio in 2011-12, was sixth in steals per game and ninth in assists per game. She was also named to the Horizon League Honor Roll, earned the UW-Green Bay Chancellor's Leadership Medallion, was a two-time recipient of the UW-Green Bay University Leadership Award and the Patricia Hinckley Scholarship, and won the JoAnne Jennings Award in 2012.


DUBUQUE COACH MARK NOLL

  • Mark Noll is in his 13th season as UD Head Women's Basketball Coach after earning the position on May 1, 2007. Noll is UD's all-time leader with 144 overall wins and 80 conference victories. He led the Spartans to the 2014-15 Iowa Conference Championship, the first in UD Women's Basketball history. The Spartans have reached previously unimaginable heights in the classroom as well under Noll. The team was ranked #1 in the WBCA Academic Team Honor Roll in 2015-16 while also finishing in the top-five in 2014-15 and 2016-17. Noll guided the Spartans to their first-ever regular season Iowa Conference title in 2014-15 and the Spartans seventh IIAC Tournament bid in his first eight seasons as head coach. Noll, a native of Colfax, Wis. is a 2000 graduate of Stout,, where he also served as the assistant women's basketball coach for seven seasons. Noll has 18 years of coaching experience at all levels including collegiate, AAU and youth levels. Noll was a significant presence as the assistant coach for the UW-Stout women's basketball program. He was a part of three consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) basketball championships, WIAC tournament championships, and two "Sweet 16" finishes in the NCAA Division III National Championships. The women's team at Stout was been among the record attendance leaders in Division III during his tenure.

CONFERENCE: UW-Stout is a member of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-Eau Claire. UW-Oshkosh, UW-La Crosse, UW-Stevens Point, UW- Platteville, UW-River Falls, and UW-Whitewater.

UP NEXT: It's a trip to Florida as the Blue Devils will compete in the Naples Shootout in Naples, Fla., Dec. 29-30. Stout will play Salisbury College Sunday, Dec. 29 and Husson College, Monday, Dec. 30. Stout will open conference play when they host UW-Platteville, Saturday, Jan. 4.
