Women's Basketball Preview: Three-game home-stand opens Tuesday

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (3-1, 0-0 WIAC) return to Johnson Fieldhouse to begin a three-day homestand, hosting Luther College (0-3, 0-0 IIAC), Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m. followed by the College of St. Scholastica (1-3, 0-0 UMAC), Saturday, Nov. 23 at 2:30 p.m. The Blue Devils will host the University of Northwestern, Tuesday, Nov. 26.

BLUE DEVILS LIVE: Join the Blue Devils every second Thursday of the month at 6 p.m. at the Stout Ale House for Blue Devil Live, a live radio show with host Pete Knutson, the voice of the Blue Devils. Throughout the show, Knutson will talk to Blue Devil coaches and student-athletes about what is coming up and what happened last week. The December show is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 12.

A LOOK AT UW-STOUT:
  • After four games, Shannan Watkins is leading the Blue Devils, averaging 16.0 points per game. The senior guard from Hoover, Ala., scored 16 points in the season opener, then went off for a career-best 27 points against Illinois Wesleyan. Liz Oswald is averaging 13.8 points and Amber Fabeck is tossing in 13.3 points. Emily Jacques leads the team in rebounds, averaging 6.3 boards, with Watkins averaging 6.0 rebounds.. Freshman Haley Yaeger is coming off the bench and is pulling down 4.5 rebounds.
  • Stout is averaging 76.2 points and are giving up 65.8.
  • The Blue Devils return two starters from last season's team in Amber Fabeck, who earned all-WIAC honorable mention honors, and Liz Oswald. Fabeck averaged 13.4 points and had 5.0 rebounds. Oswald, along with Shannan Watkins, Becky Fesenmaier, Emily Jacques and Lizzy Olsem have seen considerable throughout their careers. The Blue Devils return nine players from last year and welcome nine newcomers.
  • The Blue Devils lost two all-conference players in guards Kyncaide Diedrich and Bailey Diersen and will need to replace the duo's scoring prowess. Also lost to graduation was Carolyn Feddema.
  • But Amber Fabeck, who earned All-WIAC honorable mention honors, returns. Fabeck last season averaged 13.4 points and pulled down 5.0 rebounds. Shannan Watkins returned full-time for the Blue Devils last year after missing nearly a season and a half due to injury. The senior guard from Hoover, Ala., saw action in 26 games and averaged 8.2 points. Watkins was among the leaders for the Blue Devils in scoring, assists and steals.
  • Senior Becky Fesenmaier and Emily Jacques have been contributors their first three season and Fesenmaier saw action in all 27 games last year and Jacques in 26 games. Throughout her career, Jacques played in 76 of 77 possible games. Throughout her career, Jacques has averaged 3.8 rebounds per contest. Fesenmaier has played in 74 possible games.
  • Liz Oswald and Lizzy Olsem played in all 27 games year, with Oswald starting all 27 games where she averaged 6.7 points.
  • Also returning this season are senior Kelsey Kainz, junior Keysha Hazelton and sophomore Gina Palasz.
  • Newcomers this year include junior transfer guard Molly Wampler, guards Lindsey Johnson, Courtney Crouch, Melanie Carli, Katie Christopherson, Alexa Neilitz, and Paityn Tiefs, freshman forward Haylee Yaeger and freshman center Erin O'Brien

PRESEASON RANKINGS:
  • The Blue Devils are projected to finish fifth in the WIAC according to a WIAC preseason poll by conference coaches and sports information directors. UW-Oshkosh was picked to finish first, UW-La Crosse second, UW-Whitewater third, UW-Eau Claire fourth, UW-Platteville sixth, UW-Stevens Point seventh and UW-River Falls eighth..

STOUT LAST TIME OUT:
  • The Blue Devils were defeated by Illinois Wesleyan University, 84-75, in the opening round of the St. Norbert College Tip-Off Tournament, but came back to defeat host St. Norbert, 82-50, in the consolation match..
  • Down 26 points midway through the third period, UW-Stout launched a furious comeback to get as close as five points with a minute left, but the Blue Devils lost their first game of the season, 84-75, to Illinois Wesleyan University, Friday at Mulva Sports Center in the first game of the St. Norbert College Tournament. Shannan Watkins led all scorers with a career-best 27 points and also had a career-best nine rebounds. Oswald was two points short of matching her career-best, dropping in 20 points.   • The starting five gave the rest of the Blue Devil team a lead and the bench took advantage of their opportunity scoring more than half of Stout's total points in an 82-50 win over St. Norbert College in the consolation game of the St. Norbert Tip-Off Tournament Saturday. The Blue Devil bench combined to score 42 of Stout's 82 points to push the Blue Devils' season record to 2-1.Lizzy Olsem came off the bench to score a career-best 10 points. Haylee Yaeger played significant minutes, coming in only three minutes into the game and tallied 19 total minutes, scoring seven points, pulling down eight rebounds and finishing with five assists. Molly Wampler, a transfer from Hamline, saw her first playing time as a Blue Devil, scoring six points over six minutes. Freshmen Lindsey Johnson, Courtney Crouch and Katie Christopherson scored college-bests of five, four and five points, respectively. SCOUTING LUTHER COLLEGE

  • The Norse have three players averaging in double figures, led by Madi Spence with 11.0 points. Sarah Holtz is averaging 10.7 points and Laura Hamilton has 10.0. Hamilton is pulling down 5.7 rebounds and Grace Prokosch 4.7 rebounds. The Norse are averaging 53.0 points, but are giving up 73.0 points.

THE NORSE LAST TIME OUT
  • Luther fell to 0-3 in non-conference play after being defeated by Gustavus Adolphus College 84-53 tonight in St. Peter, Minn. Luther trailed 15-10 after the first quarter, but was outscored 25-8 in the second and entered halftime trailing 40-18. The Norse outscored the Gusties 23-17 in the third, but lost the fourth frame 27-12. The Norse struggled from the floor shooting 34% that included a 3-of-23 performance from the three-point line. The Gusties shot 48% and won the battle of the boards 34-29. Laura Hamilton led the Norse with 15 points. Grace Prokosch added 11 off the bench and also led the team with eight rebounds. LAST TIME THEY MET

SCOUTING ST. SCHOLASTICA

  • Kaylee Kennedy is averaging 12.5 points and Kelli Skog 12.0 points. Skog scored 16 points against Eau Claire and 20 against Concordia. St. Scholastica  narrowly missed the UMAC Tournament last season after winning four of their final five games. CSS ended the season with consecutive wins for the first time since the 1988-89 season. The Saints set a single-season program record for blocked shots in 2018-19. CSS will have quite the roster turnover this season with just four returning players from a season ago. Leading the returners is Honorable Mention All-UMAC junior Kaylee Kennedy, who led the team in scoring a season ago. Senior point guard Alison Huber is also back after being one of three players that recorded over 700 minutes of game time in 2018-19

SAINTS LAST TIME OUT

  • The Saints have played two games, but will play two more games before arriving in Menomonie on Saturday. Scholastica will be at Augsburg University, Tuesday, Nov. 19, then will be at UW-River Falls, Friday, Nov. 22. Scholastica lost 71-33 to UW-Eau Claire in the season opener, but evened their record with a 77-73 win at Concordia-Moorhead, Nov. 16, but then have dropped their last two games to Augsburg University Tuesday and were outscored 49-17 in the first half as it fell to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls 73-50 last night.

LAST TIME THEY MET

  • UW-Stout extended their season-opening winning streak to 10 games with a 78-66 win over the College of St. Scholastica in the first game of the UW-Superior Holiday Shootout Classic Dec. 29, 2018. Stout held a 30-19 first quarter lead and a 45-27 halftime lead, but the Saints came back to pull to within six points at the end of the third quarter, 56-50. The Blue Devils had four players score in double figures led by Bailey Diersen's 20 points. Amber Fabeck added 17, Shannan Watkins 14 and Kyncaide Diedrich 12. THE COACHES:
UW-STOUT:
  • Hannah Iverson (21-10) is in her second year as the head coach of the Blue Devils.
  • Prior to becoming the Blue Devils' head coach, Iverson was the director of player development for women's basketball at NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay, a position she began in October, 2016. As well as working directly with the team, Iverson managed the program's operating budget, coordinated team travel, co-directed summer camps and clinics and handled all aspects of team film. She assisted in the set-up of on-campus recruiting and coordinating official and unofficial visits for potential recruits. Iverson held a similar position - director of basketball operations - at the University of Illinois from 2014-16.
  • Iverson spent two years at NAIA member Ashford University in Clinton, Iowa, as an assistant women's basketball coach for the 2012-14 school years. Iverson was in charge of guard development in a season where she helped the Saints to the 2014 Association of Independent Institutions tournament championship, earning Ashford a berth in the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Championship tournament, the first conference title and appearance in the NAIA D-II tournament in Saints history.
  • A member of the UW-Green Bay women's basketball team from 2008-12, playing as Hannah Quilling, Iverson finished her career in the top 10 for games played as the Phoenix posted a 122-13 record over her four years. The team was 68-4 in Horizon League play and advanced to the NCAA Division I tournament four times, including one trip to the Sweet 16. She led the Horizon League in assist-to-turnover ratio in 2011-12, was sixth in steals per game and ninth in assists per game. She was also named to the Horizon League Honor Roll, earned the UW-Green Bay Chancellor's Leadership Medallion, was a two-time recipient of the UW-Green Bay University Leadership Award and the Patricia Hinckley Scholarship, and won the JoAnne Jennings Award in 2012.


LUTHER COLLEGE COACH AMANDA BAILEY

  • Amanda Bailey is in her ninth year as the Norse head coach. Since 2015 the UW-Stevens Point graduate has led the Norse to five consecutive appearances in the conference tournament advancing to the championship game four times. Bailey was named Conference Coach of the Year in 2015.

ST. SCHOLASTICA COACH STACY DEADRICK

  • Stacy Deadrick enters her 26th season as the head coach for the St. Scholastica women's basketball program in 2019-20. Deadrick is also the Senior Woman Administrator on the Saints' Athletics staff. Deadrick guided the Saints to their first-ever NCAA Division III Tournament appearance in 2012-13. The Saints entered the UMAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed and defeated top-seeded Minnesota Morris in overtime in the semifinals and third-seeded Martin Luther in the championship all on the road. The conference tournament win over Morris was the first since the 2004 season. In 2013-14, Deadrick led the Saints to a program-record 11 UMAC victories and tied for the second-most wins overall (16) in her time at CSS. For her efforts she was named the UMAC Coach of the Year. She matched that 11-win UMAC total again in 2014-15.

CONFERENCE: UW-Stout is a member of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-Eau Claire. UW-Oshkosh, UW-La Crosse, UW-Stevens Point, UW- Platteville, UW-River Falls, and UW-Whitewater.

UP NEXT: The Blue Devils will host the University of Northwestern, Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. as the second half of a doubleheader with the Blue Devil men's program.
