BLUE DEVILS LIVE: Join the Blue Devils every second Thursday of the month at 6 p.m. at the Stout Ale House for Blue Devil Live, a live radio show with host Pete Knutson, the voice of the Blue Devils. A LOOK AT UW-STOUT:
- The Blue Devils return two starters from last season's team in Amber Fabeck, who earned all-WIAC honorable mention honors, and Liz Oswald. Fabeck averaged 13.4 points and had 5.0 rebounds. Oswald, along with Shannan Watkins, Becky Fesenmaier, Emily Jacques and Lizzy Olsem have seen considerable throughout their careers. The Blue Devils return nine players from last year and welcome nine newcomers.
- The Blue Devils lost two all-conference players in guards Kyncaide Diedrich and Bailey Diersen and will need to replace the duo's scoring prowess. Also lost to graduation was Carolyn Feddema.
- But Amber Fabeck, who earned All-WIAC honorable mention honors, returns. Fabeck last season averaged 13.4 points and pulled down 5.0 rebounds. Shannan Watkins returned full-time for the Blue Devils last year after missing nearly a season and a half due to injury. The senior guard from Hoover, Ala., saw action in 26 games and averaged 8.2 points. Watkins was among the leaders for the Blue Devils in scoring, assists and steals.
- Senior Becky Fesenmaier and Emily Jacques have been contributors their first three season and Fesenmaier saw action in all 27 games last year and Jacques in 26 games. Throughout her career, Jacques played in 76 of 77 possible games. Throughout her career, Jacques has averaged 3.8 rebounds per contest. Fesenmaier has played in 74 possible games.
- Liz Oswald and Lizzy Olsem played in all 27 games year, with Oswald starting all 27 games where she averaged 6.7 points.
- Also returning this season are senior Kelsey Kainz, junior Keysha Hazelton and sophomore Gina Palasz.

CONFERENCE STANDINGS:
- The Blue Devils are projected to finish fifth in the WIAC according to a WIAC preseason poll by conference coaches and sports information directors. UW-Oshkosh was picked to finish first, UW-La Crosse second, UW-Whitewater third, UW-Eau Claire fourth, UW-Platteville sixth, UW-Stevens Point seventh and UW-River Falls eighth..
STOUT LAST TIME OUT:
- UW-Stout overcame a tenacious and pesky UW-Superior press and went on to a 72-68 win over the Yellowjackets Friday on Dewey Mintz Court in Johnson Fieldhouse in the season opener for both teams. With the Blue Devils holding a 10 point, 39-29, halftime lead, the Yellowjackets came out of the locker room with a full court press and while Stout maintained their lead throughout all of the third period, Superior whittled away at the lead late in the third period and trailed only 52-51 at the third intermission. The Yellowjackets tied tyhe score at 61 with 3:25 left in the game. Stout would take a six point lead with 10 seconds left, but before that got as close as one-point several times. After Stout took a 68-65 lead, the Blue Devils forced a team turnover when they forced a five-second violation. Getting sent to the foul line, Stout drained 3-of-4 free throws to take a six point 71-65 lead with 10 seconds left.. SCOUTING ILLINOIS WESLEYAN
- Illinois Wesleyan (23-5, 14-2) finished second in the CCIW during the 2018-19 season and are picked second in this season's coaches' poll with 55 points and one first place vote. The Titans have won eight conference titles in program history, all under the direction of head coach Mia Smith, who led her team to a national title in 2012. Illinois Wesleyan placed 22nd in the final D3hoops.com Top 25 at the end of last season. Sydney Shanks is the Titans top returning scorer after averaging 11.8 points per contest in 2018-19. Shanks, who ranked second on the team with points per game, was one of the most efficient players in the CCIW last year. A unanimous First Team All-CCIW honoree, Shanks led the conference in steals with 67, while ranking third in assists with a team-best 113. The Titans will be without their top scorer and rebounder from a season ago in Maddie Merritt, as well as Raven Hughes who ranked third on the team in points per game (9.3) and tied for second with 5.3 boards per contest. Overall, IWU returns 45.6 percent of its scoring and 48.8 percent of its rebounding from last year.

- A career-best performance from junior captain Kendall Sosa fueled the Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team to a 78-71 victory in its season opener at Governors State University Saturday, Nov. 9. | Game Story and Statistics
- Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team used a strong start to knock off No. 18 University of Chicago Tuesday night, Nov. 12, in the Windy City. The Titans led from wire-to-wire as junior Kendall Sosa turned in one of the best offensive performances in program history. Sosa finished the night 13-of-19 from the floor, highlighted by five three-pointers, to tally a career-high 35 points. Her final total is fifth-most in IWU single game history and the most since Molly McGraw net 37 points at North Central, Dec. 3, 2016. Meanwhile, her 13 makes are tied for second-most all-time. SCOUTING ST. NORBERT COLLEGE
- There is no question the St. Norbert College women's basketball team will hae a different look. Amanda Leonhard-Perry takes over for Connie Tilley, who retired after 42 years of leading the Green Knights. Leonhard-Perry was an assistant coach at UW-Green Bay for 11 years, and her tenure overlapped UW-Stout's Hannah Iverson's tenure with the Phoenix coaching staff and all of Iverson's playing career. Leonhard-Perry and Iverson came to Green Bay in the same year. When Leonhard-Perry was an assistant at North Dakota State University, she recruited Iverson. The Green Knights received one first-place vote in the Midwest Conference preseason poll to rank second and will look to recapture the league crown after last winning six of the seven league crowns between the 2009-10 and 2015-16 seasons. St. Norbert enters the 2019-20 season after finishing last year with an 11- 15 overall record and a 10-8 record in the Midwest Conference. The Green Knights, who finished the year fourth in the MWC standings, succumbed to eventual MWC Tournament champion Ripon 44-40 in the tournament semifinals. Three starters return from last year's squad. - Senior guard Macie Zurfluh, a first-team All-MWC choice a year ago, led the Green Knights in scoring with 13.3 points per game. Junior guard Olivia DeCleene, last season's MWC Newcomer of the Year, averaged 9.3 points per game. Senior forward Sarah Neumann posted 6.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. The Blue Devils and St. Norbert have played 11 times, but have yet to be on the winning side. The teams last met to open the 2014-15 season and the Green Knights took a 64-59 decision.

SCOUTING CALVIN COLLEGE
- Led by first-year head coach Mark Christner, the Knights are coming off a 12-14 campaign from a year ago. The Knights were 7-9 in league play last year - good for fifth place in the league standings. Calvin will receive veteran leadership from senior guards Kara Minderhoud and Sydney Houlemard. The Knights also return leading scorer and rebounder Gabby Timmer. A 6-2 center, Timmer averaged 18.4 points and 10.7 rebounds a game while connecting on 52.8 percent of her field goal attempts. Timmer was named to the 2019 All-MIAA First Team and was later named the 2019 D3hoops.com Rookie of the Year. She has been named a preseason All-American by Women's DIII News and a preseason Honorable Mention All-American by D3hoops.com. Timmer is part of a large group of returning sophomores that received significant playing time last year. Stout and Calvin have met only once, with Calvin taking a 77-36 during the 1998-99 season. Calvin is scheduled to host UW-Whitewater, Tuesday, Nov. 12 and will meet St. Norbert in the opening round of the St. Norbert tournament.

THE COACHES:
UW-STOUT:
- Hannah Iverson (19-9) is in her second year as the head coach of the Blue Devils.
- Prior to becoming the Blue Devils' head coach, Iverson was the director of player development for women's basketball at NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay, a position she began in October, 2016. As well as working directly with the team, Iverson managed the program's operating budget, coordinated team travel, co-directed summer camps and clinics and handled all aspects of team film. She assisted in the set-up of on-campus recruiting and coordinating official and unofficial visits for potential recruits. Iverson held a similar position - director of basketball operations - at the University of Illinois from 2014-16.
- Iverson spent two years at NAIA member Ashford University in Clinton, Iowa, as an assistant women's basketball coach for the 2012-14 school years. Iverson was in charge of guard development in a season where she helped the Saints to the 2014 Association of Independent Institutions tournament championship, earning Ashford a berth in the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Championship tournament, the first conference title and appearance in the NAIA D-II tournament in Saints history.
- A member of the UW-Green Bay women's basketball team from 2008-12, playing as Hannah Quilling, Iverson finished her career in the top 10 for games played as the Phoenix posted a 122-13 record over her four years. The team was 68-4 in Horizon League play and advanced to the NCAA Division I tournament four times, including one trip to the Sweet 16. She led the Horizon League in assist-to-turnover ratio in 2011-12, was sixth in steals per game and ninth in assists per game. She was also named to the Horizon League Honor Roll, earned the UW-Green Bay Chancellor's Leadership Medallion, was a two-time recipient of the UW-Green Bay University Leadership Award and the Patricia Hinckley Scholarship, and won the JoAnne Jennings Award in 2012.
ILLINOIS WESLEYAN COACH MIA SMITH
- In 2019-20, Mia Smith enters her 22nd season as head women's basketball coach at Illinois Wesleyan University. The all-time victories leader for women's basketball at Illinois Wesleyan, Smith led her team to the NCAA Division III championship in the 2011-12 campaign was chosen as the 2012 RUSSELL ATHLETIC/Women's Basketball Coaches Association "National Coach of the Year" for Division III and was named the 2012 Schelde North America/Women's DIII News "Coach of the Year". In 2018, Smith was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame as a coach and the 2012 national championship squad was inducted in the "Team" category.
CONFERENCE: UW-Stout is a member of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-Eau Claire. UW-Oshkosh, UW-La Crosse, UW-Stevens Point, UW- Platteville, UW-River Falls, and UW-Whitewater.
STOUT IN THE WIAC TOURNAMENT: (updated as of Feb. 23, 2019) Overall, UW-Stout is 20-11` in the WIAC Championship tournament. Stout is 12-3 in the first round, 4-8 in the semi-finals and 4-0 in the finals. Previous to the 2018-19 year, Stout had not participated in the WIAC post-season tournament since the 2015-16 season when they traveled to UW-Stevens Point and lost 55-44 in a first round game.

Bailey Diersen played in that Stevens Point game, with Watkins and Diersen starting the game. Watkins scored a team-high 12 points. Diersen scored two points and Diedrich came off the bench to score three points. Stout had not hosted a WIAC playoff games since the 2013-14 season when they hosted UW-Superior in a first round game, falling 86-81 to the Sally Linzmaier-led Yellowjackets. Before Wednesday, Stout had not won a WIAC post-season game since they defeated UW-River Falls, 86-70, in a first round game. Stout lost to Stevens Point, 82-74, in the second round game. Stout has not won two or more games in a conference tournament since winning the tournament during the 2006-07 season. Stout is currently tied with UW-Oshkosh for the most tournament titles with four. |
