Volleyball Preview: Stout to mark "Dig Pink" against Falcons Wednesday

THIS WEEK'S MATCHES: The Blue Devils (18-7, 1-4 WIAC) will host UW-River Falls (17-12, 1-4 WIAC), Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m., in the annual Dig Pink match, then travel to Concordia-Wisconsin, Saturday, Oct. 26, where they will face Concordia (16-7, 9-1 NAAC) and Carroll University (13-11, 2-3 CCIW).  Wednesday is a Dig Pink Night for the Blue Devils as they participate in a WIAC "Playing for a Cause" match. Around the Johnson Fieldhouse Wednesday night will be various displays and activities that center on fighting cancer and, in particular, breast cancer.

PARKING: Parking on the UW-Stout campus is restricted during the business week. For games in Johnson Fieldhouse during the week, please plan to park in Lot 29. Do not park in Lot 4, which is a reserved lot for students that live in the residence halls.

BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT: UW-Stout's Lexie Nelson put up a triple double, but it was UW-Oshkosh that recorded the 3 that ultimately counted, the 3 in the win column, as the Titans defeated the Blue Devils 3-1 Oct. 18 at the Kolf Sports Center. Nelson recorded 12 kills, 22 assists and 12 digs, her fourth triple double of the season, in a four-set match that was tied a total of 28 times and three sets went beyond the regulation 25 points. The Titans took a 28-26, 27-25, 20-25, 28-26 win. After losing the first two sets, Stout rallied in the third set for a 25-20 win behind four kills by Nelson. Stout led 24-22 in the fourth set, but the Titans managed to find a way to get past the Blue Devils and secure the win.  |  UW-Oshkosh Story and Stats

THE BLUE DEVILS IN 2019: Lexie Nelson tops out the Blue Devils in kills, averaging 2.60 kills per set and is second in assists with 4.64  per set. Freshman Lydia Kneubuehl is second in kills with 2.48 and Amber Ripley is averaging 2.12. Kneubuehl leads Stout in blocks with 0.75, which includes 58 block assists. Jessica DuVal leads the team in assists, averaging 5.32. Steph Cannon leads the league in digs with 5.85 per set, a mark that ranks her 20th nationally. Cannon, who set the school career digs record last season, now has xxxx for her career. The Blue Devils started off the season   As a team, Stout leads the WIAC in service aces, averaging 2.04 per set, and has four players among the top 15 in the conference. Nelson ranks third (0.44), Ripley is sixth (0.38), Cannon is eighth (0.36) and Emily Makina is 13th (0.32).  The Blue Devils have surpassed last season's wins total and have won 13 3-0 decisions so far this year.  The conference schedule has proved to be a challenge for the Blue Devils. THE BLUE DEVILS IN 2018: The Blue Devils finished the conference season in a three-way tie for third place with UW-La Crosse and UW-Stevens Point and earned the No. 4 seed in the WIAC Tournament, hosting a home tournament game for the first time since the 2004 season. | 2018 Statistics

MILESTONE MARKERS: Every time Steph Cannon collects a dig this season, she will break her own career school record.. Last season, Cannon shot down the school career digs record, collecting 1564 digs over three seasons, topping Alicia Mizer's four-year total of 1510. Accomplishing the feat in three season, as a freshman, Cannon collected 341 digs. Injury kept her out of action the following year, but when she returned, Cannon was moved to the libero spot where she had 548 digs. She finished the 2018 season with a school record 675 digs, breaking the school record of 657 by Peyton Schultz in 2015. Twelve times last season, Cannon had more than 25 digs in a single match. Senior setter Jessica DuVal had 2770 career assists coming into the 2019 season. The three year starter had 867 assists her freshman year, 923 as a sophomore and 980 as a junior.

UPDATED MILESTONE MARKERS: Steph Cannon now has 2096 career digs and 532 digs this season. Eighteen times this season Cannon has recorded 20 or more digs in a single match. Jessica DuVal now has 3254 career assists.


UW-RIVER FALLS: Katie Koerper is sixth in the WIAC with 2.76 kills per set. Mallory Griffen is 10th in kills (2.58) and Dakota Poirtra is 12th (2.54). Hailey Huseth is second in the WIAC in assists with 9.85. Huseth matches Stout Nelson in service aces (0.44) and is second in the WIAC. THE FALCONS LAST TIME OUT:  The UW-River Falls women's volleyball team traveled to the Hamline Triangular on Saturday.  The Falcons won both matchups of the day. They first took on Finlandia University, winning 3-0 (25-8, 25-6, 25-10).  In their second match of the day, the Falcons battled host team Hamline University, ultimately getting the win 3-2 (23-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-17, 15-8). | Hamline University Tournament Game Story and Statistics 

LAST TIME THEY MET:   UW-Stout had four players in double digits as the Blue Devils defeated UW-River Falls, 3-1, Oct. 10, 2018. The Blue Devils notched a 25-16, 25-19, 18-25, 25-13 win. Kara Simonson slammed down a career-best 19 kills, hitting at a .450 clip, committing only one error in 40 attempts. Freshman Lexie Nelson recorded 18 kills, and added four service aces, while McKylie Hoff had 11 kills and Kennedy Strain 10. Strain had one solo block and three block assists. Steph Cannon had 31 digs and Emily Makina added 23. Karli Nielsen had 12 kills to lead the Falcons and Hannah Striggow added 11 kills.  |  Game Story and Statistics


CONCORDIA-WISCONSIN: Megan Mayer averages 3.15 kills per set, followed by Molly Anderson with 2.68 and Jenna Chaussee with 2.06. Kendall Stribbling is averaging 0.85 blocks per set. The Falcons host Marian University, Tuesday, Oct. 22. The Falcons are 6-2 in the month of October | 2019 Statistics

CARROLL UNIVERSITY: The Blue Devils defeated the Pioneers earlier this year, a 3-0 win Sept. 6 at the UW-Oshkosh Titan Invitational, led by Lexie Nelson's 13 kills. Kylie Mueller leads the way with 2.46 kills per set. The Pioneers rank ninth nationally in blocks, averaging 2.21 per set. Rachel Noonan is averaging 1.17 blocks per set, ranking 12th nationally, and MacKenzie Olson 0.91.  | 2019 Statistics



CONFERENCE & NATIONAL POLLS: The Blue Devils were picked to finish fifth in the WIAC this season, according to a preseason poll conducted by WIAC head coaches and sports information directors. UW-STOUT COACH MANDY TRAUTMANN: Coach Mandy Trautmann (34-19) is in her second season as the head coach of the Blue Devils. in her first season as head coach in 2018, Trautmann led the Blue Devils to home WIAC playoff berth, the first for the Blue Devils since 2004. Trautmann took over the Blue Devils after a season as an assistant coach. Prior to coming to Stout, Trautmann was the team captain for UW-Oshkosh in 2015, a season the Titans captured the WIAC regular season championship. Trautmann was a two-time first team all-WIAC selection in 2014 and 2015, and an honorable mention choice in 2013. She was named to the all-WIAC defensive team in 2013, 2014 and 2015. 

QUICK HITS: The Blue Devils have six seniors, two juniors, six sophomores and seven freshmen on the 2019 roster...the team is made up of 11 players from Minnesota, six from Wisconsin and one each from Iowa and Illinois...assistant coach Pam Schroeder begins her 16h season with the Blue Devils, matching hockey assistant coach Greg Slupe as holding the longest active consecutive assistant coaching tenure with a Stout program.
