Soccer Preview: Two "home" games this weekend, but Eagles await first

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (4-10-0, 1-3-0 WIAC) will be at UW-La Crosse (10-4-2, 3-0-1 WIAC), Wednesday, Oct. 23 for a 7 p.m. contest, then will host UW-Whitewater (10-4-3, 3-0-1 WIAC), Saturday, Oct. 26 in Eau Claire, at 10 a.m. and host Minnesota-Morris (5-8-0, 3-4-0 UMAC), Sunday, Oct. 27 in River Falls at 1 p.m.

JUST AN ODD SCHEDULE THIS YEAR: The Blue Devils are road warriors this year. Four conference games that were originally to be played in Menomonie have been moved.  The Blue Devils will play UW-Stevens Point, Saturday, Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. at UW-River Falls; UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, Oct. 12 has been changed to 4:30 .m. at UW-River Falls.; UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Oct. 26 has been changed to 10 a.m. at UW-Eau Claire's Bollinger Field; and UW-Eau Claire, Saturday, Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. will be at UW-Eau Claire's Bollinger Field. Stout will host Minnesota-Morris, Sunday, Oct. 27 at the UW-River Falls field. All of Stout's non-conference games are on the road. That will turn around next season when the new Stout facility is expected to be ready.

THE BLUE DEVILS THIS YEAR: The Blue Devils broke a five game losing streak with a 1-0 overtime win at UW-Platteville Oct. 19 to get back on the winning side of the ledger. Claudia Anderson has produced some solid games this season. Anderson has a 2.21 goals against average (GAA) and had has made 125 saves so far this season. She has two shutouts to her name this season and six games where she has allowed one or fewer goals. She is posting a season-best 9.62 saves per game, the most in the WIAC. Anderson has five games where she has recorded 10 or more saves. Erica Seitz made her first start and picked up her first collegiate win, downing Cornell College, 3-2, but has been out for several weeks.  Marissa Steele and Ariel Kuchta lead the Blue Devils with two goals and an assist each and Hannah Kirchner has two goals, but all three have been out. Rachel Washington has one goal and three assists. Rachel Younker and Sammy Krugel each have a goal and Whitley Carothers and Megan Richardson each have an assist. Seitz has a GAA of 2.52.  | 2019 Statistics 

BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT: Sammy Krugel netted her first collegiate goal in exciting fashion as the sophomore scored the game-winner in overtime to lift the Blue Devils to a 1-0 win at UW-Platteville Oct. 19. Both teams were looking for their first conference win of the season and the scoreboard showed goose eggs for both teams at the end of regulation. Claudia Anderson turned away 10 shots in regulation for Stout, while the Pioneers' Kathyrn Flaherty turned away both shots tossed at her in regulation. The Blue Devils pierced the net at 98:10 when Rachel Washington hit Krugel, who put the ball into the back of the net. The win not only broke a five-game skid for the Blue Devils, but also a five-game scoreless streak.. | UW-Platteville Game Story and Stats  

A QUICK PREVIEW OF THE BLUE DEVILS: The Blue Devils last season had 17 freshmen on the squad and now many of those freshmen return with a year of collegiate experience under their belt. Sophomore Marissa Steele returns as Stout leading scorer from last season after driving in three goals and three assists. Senior tri-captain Bella Pedlar (Rogers, Minn) added three goals. Senior tri-captains Sarah Dickmann (Shawano) and Hannah Kirchner (La Crosse) added to the scoring, Dickmann with a goal and assist and Kirchner matching Steele in assists with three. Junior Lexi Fernandez (St. Charles, Minn) and sophomores Rachel Washington (Milwaukee), Ariel Kuchta Green Bay) and Caylee Boone (Eau Claire) each scored their first collegiate goals last year. Junior Lexie Wescott (Lake Geneva) and sophomore Kali Brahs (Lindstrom, Minn) each notched an assist.  Claudia Anderson (So, North Branch, Minn) returns after playing 14 games in front of the twine, recording 91 saves. Rachel Nowak (Jr, Lomira), all 6-foot-2 of her, returns to the goalie box after a year off. Nowak started two games in 2017, playing in four, earning a goals against average of 0.95. Freshman goalie Erica Seitz (Osseo, Minn), scheduled to wear the unconventional goalie number of 50, earned all-conference honors playing in a large school conference in the Twin Cities area.  | Season Preview  |  2018 Statistics



A LOOK AT UW-LA CROSSE: The Eagles are 6-0-1 in its last seven games and recorded its sixth straight shutout Saturday and are in first place of the WIAC.  The Eagles have not allowed a goal in 586 minutes. The Eagles last allowed a goal in a 2-1 double overtime victory over Carleton College (Minn.) September 25. Sophie Amundson leads the team with eight goals and four assists. Kaitlyn Villars  has nine goals and one assist. The Eagles have outscored their opponents, 28-12. Quinn Shannon  has a GAA of 0.51.   | Season Statistics

THE EAGLES LAST TIME OUT:  The Eagles posted a 3-0 win over UW-River Falls Oct. 19 and moved into the conference lead. Maddy Fennessy scored the first goal of the game at 38:12, her second of the season. The Eagles took a 2-0 lead early in the second half at 55:11 when Kaitlyn Villars found the back of the net on a penalty kick. Natalie Schisel notched her third goal of the year extending the Eagles lead to 3-0 at 81:16.  Ainsley Allan had the assist, her team-high sixth of the year. |  Game Story and Stats

THE LAST TIME LA CROSSE AND STOUT MET:   With a solid defense, UW-Stout kept UW-La Crosse scoreless in the first half, but the Blue Devils could not repeat the feat in the second half as the high-flying Eagles scored four goals in the second half for a 4-0 win Oct. 17, 2018, at Nelson Field, the last time a Stout women's game was played at Nelson Field. | Game Story and Stats

THE SERIES: The Eagles lead the series, 19-7-3.  


A LOOK AT UW-WHITEWATER: After opening the season at 2-4-2, the Warhawks have gone 8-0-1 over the last nine games with six shutouts during that run. Anna Brodjian and Savannah Curtis have each scored six goals this season. Curtis has three assists. Sara Klimisch has worked 12 games and has a GAA of 0.87. . | Season Statistics

THE WARHAWKS LAST TIME OUT:  Whitewater extended their unbeaten streak to 10 games in a row with a 2-0 win over UW-Platteville, with Anna Brodjian scoring both goals. Coach Ryan Quamme became the coach with the most wins in program history with 127 wins. He surpasses Greg Henschel, the UW-W coach from 2000-11. Quamme also now has the sixth most wins in conference history.  |  Game Story and Stats

THE LAST TIME WHITEWATER AND STOUT MET:   UW-Stout scored the first goal of the game, but that would be the only time they would lead as UW-Whitewater defeated the Blue Devils 10-3 Oct. 20, 2018, in Whitewater. | Game Story and Stats

THE SERIES: The Warhawks lead the series, 18-6-2.  Stout's last win over the Warhawks came Sept. 24, 2011, a 2-1 victory. 


A LOOK AT MINNESOTA-MORRIS: Sam Tate has five goals and four assists, while Monica Colderon has four goals and an assist. Bernadette Cienik has worked 1058 minutes and has a goals against average of 1.96. The Cougars are 3-4-0 in October.  | Season Statistics

THE COUGARS LAST TIME OUT:  The Cougars  scored a pair of early goals en route to a 4-1 victory over Crown at Cougar Field Wednesday afternoon. Brooke Lorentz netted her second goal of the season to put the Cougars on the board just 1:16 into the match. Freshman Monica Calderon tallied her fourth career goal in the 10th minute to add to the Cougar lead. In the closing minutes of the first half, Harper Toward scored her second career goal to make it a 3-0 contest at 41:08. The Cougars are scheduled to be at North Central College, Saturday, Oct. 26.  |  Game Story and Stats

THE LAST TIME MINN-MORRIS AND STOUT MET:   The shadows were getting long when this late afternoon game was over as UW-Stout and UM-Morris played to a 1-1 tie when the teams last met Oct. 23, 2016 in Menomonie. Sydney Kasper opened the scoring and got what would prove to be Stout's sole goal of the game when she handled the ball off a free kick and put the ball home in the ninth minute, getting an assist from Jenna Swenson. The Cougars knotted the score in the 38th minute on an unassisted goal from Molly Hancuh. | Game Story and Stats

AWARDS2019Ariel Kuchta was selected as the UW-Stout/Toppers Athlete of the Week Sept. 23 after scoring a goal and an assist in Stout's 3-2 win over Cornell College.

TEAM CAPTAINS: Blue Devil team captains for the 2019 season are Sarah Dickmann, Bella Pedlar and Hannah Kirchner.

UW-STOUT COACH RYAN RAUFUS: Coach Ryan Raufus (59-82-19) is in his ninth year as the head coach of the Blue Devils. Raufus played his college ball at Springfield College in Massachusetts and came to Stout after coaching at La Crosse Logan High School and La Crescent, Minn., High School. 

TWENTY-FOUR YEARS OF BLUE DEVIL SOCCER: After many years as a club sport, UW-Stout became the ninth WIAC team to join the varsity ranks during the 1995 season. The Blue Devils took their lumps to open the season, making their premiere by hosting Augsburg College, Sept. 10, in a 7-0 loss. Stout opened the conference season three days later at Nelson Field, hosting perennial conference powerhouse UW-Stevens Point, dropping a 6-0 decision. The Blue Devils finally broke onto the scoreboard in their third game. While hosting UW-Platteville, Sept. 17, Kari Stapleton scored in the 70th minute on an assist from Jenny Tyson in a 2-1 loss. The Blue Devils would get their first-ever win, a 3-0 decision at Martin Luther College, Sept. 23, collecting goals from Amie Frasier, Tyson and Joann Sognesand. Defender Andrea Schroeder was a second team all-conference selection in 1995, then was selected to the first team in 1996. Members of that first 1995 team include: April Amys, Beeta Bastani, Tammy Beuch, Carrie Blaska, Jen Chapple, Michelle Coon, Amie Frasier, Aimee Grimm, Jamie Jester, Julie Kremer, Dorian Loberg, Amy Lyons, Kristin Manion, Anglea McDowell, Andrea Schroeder, Joann Sognesand, Kari Stapleton, Jenny Tyson, Alisa Zimmerman.
