Baseball Preview: Senior Day when Stout hosts La Crosse Tuesday

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: UW-Stout (8-23, 5-13 WIAC) will close out the home part of the schedule when they host UW-La Crosse (21-12, 11-7 WIAC) Tuesday, May 8 at Nelson Field. The game was originally scheduled to be played April 17, but snowy field conditions forced the delay. Stout will close out the season when they trave to UW-Platteville (8-28, 2-18 WIAC), Friday, May 11 and Saturday, May 12 for a pair of conference doubleheaders.

SENIOR DAY: After the conclusion of Tuesday's games, the Blue Devils will honor seniors Zach Carlson, Ryan Connor, Paul Danczyk, Wyatt Ernstmeyer, Joel Hollow, Max Sires and Sam Waters.

PARKING: Parking for home baseball and softball games during the business week is limited. Regular parking restrictions are strictly enforced. Parking for baseball and softball spectators during weekday games is restricted to on-street parking and in Lot 29 one hour before the scheduled start of the event. Lot 29 is located just to the north of the outdoor track. DO NOT PARK in Lot 4 during the week. Lot 4 is the parking lot located to the west of the Sports & Fitness Center and north of Don & Nona Williams Stadium (the football stadium). Lot 4 is only open to the general public from 1 p.m. on Fridays until 9 p.m. on Sundays. There is no general parking in Lot 4 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdays and not until 1 pm on Fridays. Team bus may park in the southeast space in Lot 4 (Emergency Vehicle Only space). Team buses may also park on the east side (outdoor track side - not the metered side) of 3rd Street East. Parking is permitted in all university lots on weekends.

HITTING THE BALL THIS SEASON: Jack Hemsath has heated up at the plate to close his Sophomore season. Hemsath has recorded 11 hits in the last five games, including three RBI and four Runs. The Sophomore is batting a co-team leading .325 on the season and is second on the team in RBI with 21. Jon Krueger has continued to be solid this season, batting .325 as well, and leading the team in On Base Percentage at .446. Ben Vanhove hit his first career home run in Game 1 again UW-La Crosse last week. PITCHING THIS SEASON: Jack Donahue fell to 4-2 on the year with a loss against La Crosse last Tuesday. The right handed junior is holding a 2.88 ERA while holding opposing batters to a .265 batting average. Brad Rindfleisch sits at 1-2 on the year with a 2.87 ERA. The sophomore from West Bend pitched five innings in game 2 against UW-La Crosse, giving up sixts and three runs in that outing.. Zach Carlson has returned to the lineup after sitting out last season due to injury. Freshman Tyler Seymour made his pitching debut for the Blue Devils against UW-La Crosse last week and did his job. The Freshman also pitched against Bethel on Sunday. In his two outings and his 2.2 Innings pitched, Seymour is yet to give up a hit and has only allowed one batter to reach first base (walk).


UW-STOUT LAST TIME OUT: The Blue Devils opened up their home season last week, losing to UW-La Crosse, 8-5, 4-2, then jumped out of conference play where they lost at Bethel University, 7-5, 12-3, May 6. | La Crosse Game Story and Stats | Bethel Game Story and Stats

WIAC PRESEASON: UW-Stout is picked to finish fifth in the WIAC, according to a preseason poll conducted by the conference. UW-Whitewater is picked first, followed by UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh, and UW-Stevens Point. UW-Platteville is picked sixth and league-newcomer, the Illinois Institute of Technology, was picked to finish seventh. ITT will be in the league for one year only.


UW-LA CROSSE: Since last Tuesdays meeting with UW-Stout, UW-La Crosse hosted UW-Oshkosh in a four game series. La Crosse won the first one 10-9, but dropped the following three of the weekend by scores of 3-4, 4-9, and 4-15. After the weekend series, UW-La Crosse stands at 21-12 and 11-7 in WIAC play. UW-La Crosse has been consistent at the plate this season. The team as a whole hits at a .284 mark, while having six batters that are batting at .300 or better. Mitch Sutton is batting an impressive .367 on the year. He has bolstered that average the past two weeks, batting .436 (17-39). Sutton is also on a seven game hit streak. Nate Heili brings the power to the plate. The 6'5, 215 pound infielder has five home runs on the year and 27 RBI while batting .304. On the mound, La Crosse is led by junior Mason McMahon. McMahon is coming off a sophomore season in which he finished 6-1 with a 3.68 ERA. The junior has improved this season, pitching to a 2.73 ERA and a 4-1 start to the season and holding opposing batteres to a .223 average. The junior has also struck out 95 of the 215 batters he has faced this season. UW-La Crosse made the program's sixth NCAA appearance - and fourth straight - a season ago. | 2018 Statistics

UW-PLATTEVILLE: UW-Platteville brings back 16 letterwinners from last season's squad the produced at least 19 wins for the third straight year - the longest stretch in program history. Josh Moses led the WIAC with a .612 slugging percentage, 16 doubles and five triples, while ranking fifth with a .354 batting average. He also led the team with a .422 on-base percentage, 52 hits, 30 RBI, 29 runs scored and four home runs.

UW-Platteville is off to a 6-14 start this season after being swept by UW-Stevens Point last weekend in their conference play opener. The Pioneers have battled in almost all of their games this year, having lost five games by one run, and another three by two runs. They did go on a four game winning streak earlier this season, beating Belhaven twice, followed by wins over Millsaps and Edgewood. Josh Moses is back to leading the way for Platteville. He is off to a blistering start, batting .392 with a .658 slugging percentage and a .525 OBP. Platteville has struggled on the mound this season, giving up an average of 7.47 runs a game and a .282 batting average for opponent batters. Tyler Vogel has led the way for the Pioneers, holding a 1-2 record, but has struck out 29 batters in only 26.0 innings. He holds a 4.50 ERA, while holding rival batters to a .207 batting average. LAST TIME STOUT AND THE PIONEERS MET:

2018 TEAM CAPTAINS: Team captains for the 2018 season are seniors Max Sires and Zach Carlson, along with juniors Jared Jarvensivu and Jordan Wilson.

AWARDS AND HONORS: Brad Rindfleisch was selected the UW-Stout/Toppers Pizza Athlete of the Week, April 17, after throwing eight innings and allowing only one run in an eventual 14-inning loss to UW-Stevens Point, April 11...2017: Joel Hollow was selected as a first team all-WIAC pick at third base...Max Sires was selected as the WIAC Pitcher of the Week and was the UW-Stout/DigiCopy Athlete of the Week after pitching a season opening 1-0 shutout win over Bethel College, Feb. 27 at the US Bank Stadium...Noah Brown and Derek Graves earned WIAC honorable mention selection last spring.

COACHES: Ben Kincaid (13-45) is in his second year as the Blue Devils' head coach, following two years as a Blue Devil assistant coach where he worked primarily with the pitchers. Kincaid played collegiately at at Minnesota State University-Mankato, where he was a four year letter winner, playing in 149 games. He finished with a .339 batting average, 38 doubles (5th on MSU's career list), six home runs and 140 runs batted in (6th on MSU's career list). As a righthanded pitcher he sported a 14-8 record with a 3.45 earned run average and had 148 strikeouts in 172 innings pitched. Kincaid was named to the All-Central Region team three times in his career. An Eau Claire native, Kincaide played for the local Eau Claire Express. UW-La Crosse: Chris Schwarz begins his 14th season as head baseball coach at UW-La Crosse in 2017-18. Along with his coaching duties, Schwarz is in his second year as the Athletic Alumni Relations Coordinator. He led the Eagles to their third straight National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Midwest Regional Championship game in 2017. UWL finished 31-19 overall in 2017, marking its fourth 30-win season in school history, including third straight. The Eagles made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship in 2015 and 2016. UW-Platteville: Eric Frese  is wrapping up his 12th season as the head coach at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and his 20th season overall. Throughout his career at UW-Platteville, the Pioneers have constantly set new school records. Frese won his 300th game as a collegiate head coach on March 12, 2017 when the Pioneers defeated Stockton College (New Jersey) 5-2. Frese is the all-time winningest coach in Pioneer Baseball history. The 2017 Pioneers won 19 games, which included a ten game win streak. Colton Bormann earned first-team all-WIAC, while Colin Deboer and freshman Josh Moses earned honorable-mention.
