Baseball Preview: Finally, home baseball a reality for Blue Devils

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: After a number of postponements, UW-Stout (8-19, 5-11 WIAC) and UW-La Crosse (18-9, 8-4 WIAC) are finally able to meet Tuesday, May 1 at Nelson Field. The game time has been changed because of impending inclement weather. First pitch for the double header is now scheduled for 11 a.m. The game was originally scheduled to be played April 3, but this week's game is the first home event of the season for the Blue Devil baseball squad. Stout will have the weekend off from conference play, but will travel to Bethel University, (23-7, 10-4 MIAC) Sunday, May 6 for a 1 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.

PARKING: Parking for home baseball and softball games during the business week is limited. Regular parking restrictions are strictly enforced. Parking for baseball and softball spectators during weekday games is restricted to on-street parking and in Lot 29 one hour before the scheduled start of the event. Lot 29 is located just to the north of the outdoor track. DO NOT PARK in Lot 4 during the week. Lot 4 is the parking lot located to the west of the Sports & Fitness Center and north of Don & Nona Williams Stadium (the football stadium). Lot 4 is only open to the general public from 1 p.m. on Fridays until 9 p.m. on Sundays. There is no general parking in Lot 4 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdays and not until 1 pm on Fridays. Team bus may park in the southeast space in Lot 4 (Emergency Vehicle Only space). Team buses may also park on the east side (outdoor track side - not the metered side) of 3rd Street East. Parking is permitted in all university lots on weekends.

HITTING THE BALL THIS SEASON: First baseman Kasey Bass brought his bat with him this weekend, going an impressive 8-for-16 against a very good UW-Oshkosh rotation, highlighted by a 4-for-5 outing in the final game of the weekend to improve his overall batting average to .378. The 6-3, 245-pound sophomore also hit his second home run of the season. Jon Krueger went 3-for-17 over the weekend which ended up dropping his batting average from .400 to .347. Jordan Wilson hit his first home run of the season in the third game of the weekend against Oshkosh. The junior leads the team in RBI with 21 and hits with 31 this season. Ben Vanhove has been very consistent over the past couple weeks, earning a hit in his last six games and nine of the last 10. The sophomore infielder has improved his batting average to .316 on the season. Jack Hemsath is batting .302 and leads the team in extra base hits with nine and freshman Danny Deis is also over .300, batting .309. . | 2018 Statistics

PITCHING THIS SEASON: Jack Donahue improved to 4-1 on the year with a win over Stevens Point last Wednesday. Donahue went 8.1 innings, allowing only one earned run and striking out three. The right handed junior has been on fire as of late. In his last four outings, Donahue has only given up two earned runs over 18.1 innings, while also dropping his ERA to 2.34. Donahue also notched a save against UW-Oshkosh. Brad Rindfleisch tallied his first career win, throwing eight innings and allowing only two runs in Game 2 against Stevens Point last week. The sophomore from West Bend has been solid all season and has an ERA of 2.39. Zach Carlson has returned to the lineup after sitting out last season due to injury. Wyatt Ernstmeyer did his job last week against UW-Stevens Point, coming in at the end of both games to close out the Pointers and earned a pair of saves. He threw 1.2 innings over the two game span.


UW-STOUT LAST TIME OUT: The Blue Devils swept UW-Stevens Point last week, taking a 5-2, 4-3, pair of wins. The Blue Devils split April 28 with UW-Oshkosh, losing the first, 7-2, then winning the nightcap, 6-5. Oshkosh won both games the following day, April 29, 9-1, 10-5.

WIAC PRESEASON: UW-Stout is picked to finish fifth in the WIAC, according to a preseason poll conducted by the conference. UW-Whitewater is picked first, followed by UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh, and UW-Stevens Point. UW-Platteville is picked sixth and league-newcomer, the Illinois Institute of Technology, was picked to finish seventh. ITT will be in the league for one year only.


UW-LA CROSSE: UW-La Crosse has been hot over the last week, sweeping both of their double headers against UW-Platteville and University of St. Thomas. The sweeps have improved the Eagles record to 18-9 on the year. UW-La Crosse has been consistent at the plate this season. The team as a whole hits at a .279 mark, while having eight batters that are batting at .300 or better. Mitch Sutton is batting an impressive .351 on the year. He bolstered that average after a 7 for 12 outing against Platteville over a two game span. Nate Heili brings the power to the plate. The 6'5, 215 pound infielder has five home runs on the year and 26 RBI while batting .327. On the mound, La Crosse is led by junior Mason McMahon. McMahon is coming off a sophomore season in which he finished 6-1 with a 3.68 ERA. The junior has improved this season, pitching to a team best 1.99 ERA and a 4-1 start to the season and holding opposing batteres to a .203 average. The junior has also struck out 90 of the 192 batters he has faced this season. UW-La Crosse made the program's sixth NCAA appearance - and fourth straight - a season ago. | 2018 Statistics

LAST TIME STOUT AND LA CROSSE MET: UW-La Crosse used big innings in both games to sweep UW-Stout April 22, 2017, at Copeland Park, 9-3, 5-0. | April 22 Story and Statistics | The UW-Stout bats were as warm as the very nice spring day today at Copeland Park in La Crosse. The Blue Devils erupted for 21 hits in an 18-2 opening game win over UW-La Crosse, then belted out 11 hits in a 7-4 loss to Eagles. BETHEL UNIVERSITY: Bethel is receiving votes in the latest ABCA coaches poll. Bethel had three double headers scheduled before hosting the Blue Devils on May 6. The Royals will play Concordia College, Tuesday, May 1, St. Thomas, Thursday, May 3 and Augsburg University, Saturday, May 5.  | 2018 Statistics

LAST TIME STOUT AND BETHEL MET: Last year it was one of the first games of the season when the teams met at US Bank Stadium and this year it is one of the last scheduled games of the season. Sam Waters drove in the game-winning run to give UW-Stout a 1-0 win in the bottom of the seventh inning of the first game, but the Blue Devils could not repeat the magic and Bethel University won the second game 8-0 in Stout's 2017 season opener at US Bank Stadium, Feb. 27, 2017. | Game Stories and Statistics



2018 TEAM CAPTAINS: Team captains for the 2018 season are seniors Jared Jarvensivu, Max Sires and Zach Carlson, along with junior Jordan Wilson.

AWARDS AND HONORS: Brad Rindfleisch was selected the UW-Stout/Toppers Pizza Athlete of the Week, April 17, after throwing eight innings and allowing only one run in an eventual 14-inning loss to UW-Stevens Point, April 11...2017: Joel Hollow was selected as a first team all-WIAC pick at third base...Max Sires was selected as the WIAC Pitcher of the Week and was the UW-Stout/DigiCopy Athlete of the Week after pitching a season opening 1-0 shutout win over Bethel College, Feb. 27 at the US Bank Stadium...Noah Brown and Derek Graves earned WIAC honorable mention selection last spring.

COACHES: Ben Kincaid (13-41) is in his second year as the Blue Devils' head coach, following two years as a Blue Devil assistant coach where he worked primarily with the pitchers. Kincaid played collegiately at at Minnesota State University-Mankato, where he was a four year letter winner, playing in 149 games. He finished with a .339 batting average, 38 doubles (5th on MSU's career list), six home runs and 140 runs batted in (6th on MSU's career list). As a righthanded pitcher he sported a 14-8 record with a 3.45 earned run average and had 148 strikeouts in 172 innings pitched. Kincaid was named to the All-Central Region team three times in his career. An Eau Claire native, Kincaide played for the local Eau Claire Express. UW-La Crosse: Chris Schwarz begins his 14th season as head baseball coach at UW-La Crosse in 2017-18. Along with his coaching duties, Schwarz is in his second year as the Athletic Alumni Relations Coordinator. He led the Eagles to their third straight National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Midwest Regional Championship game in 2017. UWL finished 31-19 overall in 2017, marking its fourth 30-win season in school history, including third straight. The Eagles made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship in 2015 and 2016. Bethel University: Brian Raabe's knowledge, passion and energy has the Bethel University baseball program soaring to new heights and is in his seventh season at the helm. Led the Royals to their first MIAC Championship in 2015 and again in 2017 and was named the 2015 MIAC Coach-of-the-Year.

DOWN THE ROAD: The Blue Devils are scheduled to host UW-La Crosse, Tuesday, May 8, at 1 p.m., then will close out the season with a weekend series at UW-Platteville, Friday, May 11 and Saturday, May 12. That series was originally scheduled for April 14-15.
