A LOOK AT UW-STOUT:
- The last time Stout started the season at 8-0 was during the 1995-96 season when the Blue Devils opened the year with nine straight wins. The most wins to open a season came during the 1992-93 year when Stout won their first 13 games.
- Bailey Diersen leads the Blue Devils in scoring with a 16.8 per game average and is second in the WIAC. Diersen has scored in double digits in five of the six games she has played this year. Diersen has a free throw percentage of .829, making 29 of 35 - leading the team in attempts - and has made her last 13 attempts, going back to the Hamline game, Nov. 20. Diersen did not go to the line against Martin Luther and did not play against Crown College. The senior guard leads the team and the WIAC in steals with 24, taking 10, one short of the 20-year old school record of 11. Diersen is averaging 4.0 steals per game, tied for 10th in the NCAA Division III.
- Amber Fabeck has had a solid start for the Blue Devils. After scoring seven points in the season opener, the 6-3 post player poured in a career-best 22 points against St. Catherine, then added 13 points in the rematch with St. Olaf. Fabeck collected her first career double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds against Albion College. Fabeck is averaging 12.0 points and 5.9 rebounds.
- Kyncaide Diedrich is currently averaging 13.9 points per contest, second on the team and fifth in the WIAC. Diedrich has had two double-doubles this season, both with 19 points and 10 rebounds, against St. Olaf College and Berea College. Diedrich was named the MVP at the North Park University tournament, tossing in 21 points in a win over Albion College, then 19 points against Berea College. Diedrich was selected as the UW-Stout/Toppers Athlete of the Week, as the WIAC Athlete of the Week and to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week. She is second in the league in assists, averaging 4.38. She is setting the net on fire at the free throw line, missing only two shots in 25 attempts, shooting at a 92.0 percentage. She has made 16 consecutive free throws stretching back to the St. Olaf game, Nov. 17, but has not been to the line in the last two games. Diedrich is ranked 14th in the NCAA Division III in free throw percentage.
- Diersen and Diedrich are both on a collision course to break 1000 career points. Diedrich has 967 career points and Diersen 941.
- Shannan Watkins has returned to the floor after missing more than a season and a half due to injury. The guard from Hoover, Ala., missed one game this season, but bounced back to score a season-high 12 points against Crown. Watkins is averaging 6.4 points and 2.3 rebounds. Watkins scored 11 points in the season opener against St. Olaf.
- Liz Oswald has started all eight games at point guard and broke out for a career-best 22 points against Crown. Oswald's previous career scoring high was nine points, a mark she hit earlier this season against Hamline University. Oswald has started all eight game so far this year and last year came off the bench to play in all 25 games. This season, she is averaging 7.8 points and 33.8 minutes played, third in the WIAC. Oswald ranks in the top 15 in the WIAC in assists (2.0, 15th), 3-point percentage (.323, 13th), 3-point FG made (1.25, 13th
- Carolyn Feddema has started all eight games this season, averaging a career-best 4.8 rebounds per contest. is doubling her career averaging in rebounds, pulling down 5.2 per game. Coming into the season, the senior was averaging 2.6 boards per contest. Feddema started 19 games during her sophomore season.
- As a team, the Blue Devils are averaging 68.7 points and giving up 50.6 and are ranked 26th nationally in scoring defense.
- Not surprisingly with eight wins under their belt, the Blue Devils are outscoring their opponents in every quarter. But the fourth quarter has been their strongest quarter (135-98), outscoring their opponents by an average of 16.9-12.3. Stout is outscoring their opponents 14.3-11.6 in the first quarter (114-93).
- If Stout keeps up the pace in steals, they will soon be featured on wanted posters. The Blue Devils had 29 steals against Martin Luther College and 21 against Crown. Bailey Diersen had 10 steals against Martin Luther, one short of Heather Peterson's 1999 school record of 11. Stout has nearly doubled up their opponents in steals, nabbing 102 to their opponent's 55. Stout is ranked 36th nationally for steals per game (12.8).
- 2018-19 Blue Devil Statistics
A PRESEASON LOOK AT UW-STOUT:
- The Blue Devils return 13 players from last year's squad and bring in four players new to the program, one transfer and three freshmen.
- The Blue Devils return three seniors - Kyncaide Diedrich (Athens), Bailey Diersen (Greenville) and Carolyn Feddema (Buffalo, Minn).
- Diedrich, the league's leading scorer last season with 15.9 points per game, was a first team All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) pick, as well as being selected to the all-defensive team. Diedrich was third in the WIAC in rebounds and third in steals.
- Diersen earned honorable mention honors, just trailing Diedrich in points scored at 15.2 points and led the WIAC in steals with 2.44. Diedrich hit 33 3-pointers and Diersen 27 to lead the team.
- Feddema has been a steady player for the Blue Devils throughout her career, getting onto the court in 75 of 76 possible games over her career, averaging anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes per game.
- After more than a year out due to injury, Shannan Watkins returns, adding another experienced player to the lineup. Watkins averaged almost seven points during the 2015-16 season and was scoring more than 10 points when she went down nine games into the 2016-17 season.
- Expect to see Becky Fesenmaier, junior college transfer Kelsey Krainz, Kara Griswold, Keysha Hazelton and Katie Sukanen see time in the guard positions, along with Lexi Todd, Shayna Hohlfelder and Gina Palasz.
- Underneath the basket, Amber Fabeck acclimated herself to the conference last year and, at 6-foot-3, stretches her post position. After transferring to Stout from the University of Sioux Falls last season, Fabeck averaged 8.5 points and 5.1 rebounds. Only Diedrich and Diersen connected on more 3-pointers, as Fabeck drained 23 of 65 3-pointers at a .354 clip. Fabeck was third in the league in blocked shots with 31.
- In addition to Fabeck playing underneath, Lizzy Olsem, Emily Jacques and Maddy Otto will patrol the paint.
- Both Diedrich and Diersen have exceeded 800 points for their careers. Diedrich has 856 career points over 73 games, averaging 11.7 points for her career. Diedrich has 383 points last season. Stout took a 45-21 halftime lead and outscored Martin Luther 25-7 in the third quarter. Stout had three players score in double digits, led by Bailey Diersen's double-double with 19 points and 10 steals. SCOUTING RIPON COLLEGE
- Maggie Oimoen, a two-time first team all-conference selection, leads Ripon with 14.1 ppg and 8.0 rebounds. Natalie Gieger is averaging 8.9 points. Jesi Nay is posting an 8.2 ppg average, getting a good chunk of her points from downtown. Nay has hit 16 of 51 3-point attempts (33.1 percent), averaging nearly two 3-pointers per contest. - Red Hawk Statistics
THE RED HAWKS LAST TIME OUT
- After opening conference play with three straight wins, Ripon suffered a two-point, 49-47 loss at St. Norbert College Saturday. St. Norbert capitalized off 15 Ripon turnovers, which they turned into 18 points, while the Green Knights only committed nine turnovers in the contest. Ripon led by as many as 10 points in the first period, but St. Norbert cut that lead to one point on the opening possession of the third quarter. After a pair of St. Norbert free throws tied the score at 47 late in the fourth quarter, Sarah Ratajczyk gave the Green Knights a two-point lead on a layup with just three seconds left. A last second 3-pointer by the Red Hawks was no good, giving St. Norbert their first conference win of the season. Ripon was led by Maggie Oimoen's 14th career double-double and fifth in the last six games, recording team-highs of 16 points and 11 rebounds in 21 minutes. Jesi Nay added 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting, including 3-of-8 from 3-point range. The Red Hawks converted 39 percent (19-49) of their shots on the night, while out-rebounding St. Norbert 35-28.
- Game Story and Statistics
THE LAST TIME RIPON AND STOUT MET
- Ripon College used a 17-6 third quarter to go past UW-Stout Tuesday at Weiske Gymnasium and handed UW-Stout a 59-45 decision. The Red Hawks never trailed in the game and built the lead throughout the first half, holding a 13-8 first quarter decision and a 29-20 halftime lead. The third quarter outburst by the Red Hawks was combined with a cold shooting quarter by the Blue Devils. Stout (1-2) hit only 1 of 14 from the floor in the period and scored four points at the free throw line. Ripon only shot 29 percent in the period, dropping in 5 of 19 shots, but hit seven free throws. Ripon ruled the board throughout the night, but especially in the third. For the game, Ripon pulled down 63 rebounds to Stout's 37. In the period, Ripon held a 24-8 advantage. The lead in rebounding showed up in second chance points for the two teams. For the game, Ripon scored 24 second chance points, compared to Stout's seven.
