2018 WIAC Tennis Championship
MADISON (October 20, 2018) -
Gabe Kelch won her opening match at the WIAC Tennis Championship Saturday at Nielson Tennis Stadium. Kelch defeated Delanie Otto of UW-River Falls, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, in the No. 4 singles match. She will play top-seeded Maura Andersen of UW-La Crosse tomorrow.
At No. 2 singles, the Blue Devils'
Annie Sandry was forced to default, aggravating an injury from earlier this month. With Sandry out, coach
Bryce Supri had to realign his doubles line-up.
Mariah Kent was moved up to play No. 1 doubles with
Linsey Thisius, and
Elizabeth Wahlquist moved into Kent's No. 3 doubles spot.
Kent and Thisius lost to Sadie Spahn and Hayley Cope, 8-1, in the first round, then defeated Leah Hollander and Kaylee Woelfel of UW-Stevens Point, 8-3.
At No. 2 doubles,
Kennedy Kleist and Kelch lost 8-1 to Samantha Koppa and Hannah Peters of UW-Oshkosh, 8-1, and had a second round bye.
Wahlquist and
Kayla Chamberlain lost both matches at No. 3 doubles, falling 8-0 in round one and 8-4 in the second round.
Kleist lost her opening round match at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-4, to Oshkosh's Koppa, then received a bye in the second round. Kent lost her first round match at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-1, to Michelle Spicer of Oshkosh and received a second round bye. Wahlquist lost her first round match at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-2, to Rachel Slonac of UW-Eau Claire.
The championship will conclude on Sunday.
