Volleyball Preview: Stout hosts St. Mary's in Dig for a Cure game

THIS WEEK'S MATCHES: The Blue Devils (8-8, 2-1 WIAC) complete a four-match homestand when they face St. Mary's University (8-8, 1-3 MIAC), Wednesday, Oct. 3 in the annual Dig for a Cure game at 7 p.m. Cheer on the Blue Devils and raise money for the fight against cancer. Special breast cancer awareness T-shirts are on sale for $12, and fundraising activities will take place before and throughout tonight's match.Stout will be at Augsburg University (16-2, 4-1 MIAC), Saturday, Oct. 6 for an 11 a.m. match.

PARKING: Parking on the UW-Stout campus is restricted during the business week. For games in Johnson Fieldhouse during the week, please plan to park in Lot 29. Do not park in Lot 4, which is a reserved lot for students that live in the residence halls.

BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT: Kara Simonson set a career-high that helped propel UW-Stout past UW-La Crosse 3-1 Saturday. Simonson collected 17 kills and started off the day with five kills in the opening 25-20 first set. She had two as the Blue Devils (8-8, 2-1 WIAC) dropped the second set, 25-14, but then recovered her game six kills in set three that Stout won, 25-19. Simonson closed out her day with four kills in a 25-17 win. In the three sets that Stout won, Simonson delivered a kill to finish off the set. McKylie Hoff had nine kills and stuffed a couple of attacks late in the final set to keep the Eagles (10-7, 2-1 WIAC) off the scoreboard. Jessica DuVal had eight kills to go along with her 35 assists. Steph Cannon had a season-high 41 digs, just three short of her career-best. | La Crosse Match and Stats | Lexie NelsonKennedy Strain and McKylie Hoff combined for 40 kills, but UW-Stout still came up short and lost a 3-1 decision to UW-Stevens Point last Wednesday. After two sets, the teams were tied with the Pointers taking the first set, 25-21, but Stout came back to tie with a 25-20 decision. The Pointers edged out a 25-23 third set, then came back to win the fourth set, 26-24. Nelson led Stout with a collegiate-best 17 kills, while Strain finished with 13 kills and Hoff with 10 kills. | UW-Stevens Point Match and Stats | After UW-Stout won the first two sets, the third set turned into a nail-biter and the Blue Devils trailed Hamline University midway through the third set. But a rally with seven straight points put the Blue Devils back into the lead and Stout went on to 3-0 win. The Blue Devils (7-7)  trailed by as much as 17-13 in the third set, but Stout rallied with two kills by Kennedy Strain, and single kills by Jessica DuVal and Lexie Nelson, along with a block by Nelson and Strain to take a 20-17 lead as Summer Garr served during all seven points in the run. The Pipers came back to tie the set at 22, but a kill by Nelson and a couple of errors by the Pipers gave Stout a 25-23 win and the match. | Hamline University Match and Stats


THE BLUE DEVILS IN 2018: Middle hitter Kennedy Strain is averaging 2.97 kills per set over 60 sets played and has recorded 173 total kills, bringing her career totals to 997. Strain is the team's leading blocker, recording 13 solo blocks and 29 assisted blocks. Jessica DuVal had a solid last week, averaging more than 10 assists per set. She is currently averaging 8.24 and is ranked fourth in the conference. DuVal leads the team in service aces with 17.  McKylie Hoff has four solo blocks and just trails Strain with 27 assisted blocks. Steph Cannon was selected as the WIAC defensive player of the week after Stout went 2-1 last week, and she is second in the WIAC in digs, averaging 5.40 digs per set, ranking 35th in Division III.  Amber Ripley leads the Blue Devils in average kills per set with 3.21, putting down a total of 122 kills over 38 sets played, but is out for an indefinite period of time. | Statistics

A LOOK AT STOUT: The Blue Devils return all-conference picks Kennedy Strain and Steph Cannon, who both garnered honorable mention honors. Strain, a senior middle hitter,, led the Blue Devils in kills, averaging 2.82 kills per set, tallying 302 total, and ranks 10th in the WIAC in kills per set. She ranks eighth in the conference in hitting percentage, hitting at a .255 clip. On the block, Strain finished with 23 solo blocks and 49 block assists for 79 total She averaged 0.67 per set. Eighteen times this season, Strain finished with double-digit kills, with a season-high 20 in a 3-2 win over Minnesota-Morris. After sitting out the 2016 season, Cannon, a junior, made the switch from hitter to back-row specialist, wearing the libero shirt for the majority of games and was chosen to the all-conference team as a libero. Cannon, who was also selected to the all-defensive team, finished the year with 548 digs, a mark that is fifth on the UW-Stout all-time singles seasons list. Cannon ranked fourth in the WIAC in digs, averaging 4.98 per set. Cannon threatened the school single match digs record, recording 44 digs against Minnesota-Morris. The school record is 48. Cannon 11 times exceeded 20 digs in a single match and four times had 30 or more digs.The Blue Devils return senior Emily Bialka, who switched from setter to hitter last season. MILESTONE MARKERS LOOMING: Kennedy Strain currently has 997 career kills. Jessica DuVal has 2301 career assists. Steph Cannon has 1225 career digs.


SAINT MARY'S UNIVERSITY: Brandi Blattner recently collected her 1000th career kill and leads the Cardinals in kills with 3.64 per set. Brittney Flom is averaging 2.36 kill per set, while Rachel Kedt is averaging 2.26 kills per set.  Feeding those hitters has been Lillian Braun, who is averaging 10.20 assists per set, a mark that ranks Braun 28th in the country.. The Cardinals opened the season with four consecutive wins, but have dropped three of their last four games, all conference games. | Statistics

SAINT MARY'S LAST TIME OUT:  The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season has been a bit of a rollercoaster ride for Saint Mary's.  After opening with a pair of losses to Bethel and Augsburg, the Cardinals rebounded with an impressive 3-1 win over St. Catherine last Saturday, only to drop a 3-0 decision to Saint Benedict on Friday evening — leaving the Cardinals in dire need of a bounce-back performance against Concordia Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately, Concordia didn't get the message, as the Cobbers dealt the Cardinals their second loss of the weekend, handing Saint Mary's a 3-0 — 25-21, 25-16, 27-15 setback at Memorial Auditorium. Brandi Blattner — who became the Cardinals' 13th player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills on Friday — notched a team-best five kills against Concordia, while Lillian Braun delivered 27 assists and  DeJaye Baab finished with a team-high 24 digs. | Game Story and Statistics

LAST TIME THE CARDINALS AND BLUE DEVILS MET: The Cardinals swept the Blue Devils 3-0 in the second match of the season at  Saint Mary's. AUGSBURG UNIVERSITY: The Auggies are off to their best start since the 2013 season. Augsburg finished 29-5 that season, sharing the MIAC regular-season title and reaching the NCAA Division III national playoffs. Corinna Evans, the MIAC hitter of the week, is averaging a team-best 2.53 kills per set. Kayla Gjerde is putting down 2.51 and Megan Quam, 2.30. Quam leads the team in blocks with three solo blocks and 47 assisted blocks. Morgan Malley is the team's top setter, averaging 9.85 assists per set and also leads the team in service aces with 20.  |  Statistics

AUGSBURG LAST TIME OUT: Reaching its best start to a season since 2013, the Augsburg University volleyball team improved to 16-2 overall with its eighth straight win, a four-set triumph at Hamline University Sept. 29. Corrina Evans had an impressive performance in the middle, tying a season-high with 14 kills on .407 hitting (three errors in 27 swings), her sixth time hitting .400 or better this season. LAST TIME THE AUGGIES AND BLUE DEVILS MET: UW-Stout stayed close with Augsburg University throughout the evening, but attack errors made the difference and the Auggies defeated the Blue Devils, 25-20, 25-20, 25-21, at Johnson Fieldhouse Oct. 4, 2017. Both teams finished the night with 42 kills, but the Blue Devils committed twice as many errors, tallying 20 to Augsburg's 10. CONFERENCE & NATIONAL POLLS: The Blue Devils were picked to finish sixth in a preseason poll conducted by league coaches and sports information directors. UW-STOUT COACH MANDY TRAUTMANN: Coach Mandy Trautmann (8-8) is in her first season as the head coach of the Blue Devils. Trautmann took over the Blue Devils after a season as an assistant coach. Prior to coming to Stout, Trautmann was the team captain for UW-Oshkosh in 2015, a season the Titans captured the WIAC regular season championship.  Trautmann was a two-time first team all-WIAC selection in 2014 and 2015, and an honorable mention choice in 2013. She was named to the all-WIAC defensive team in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

QUICK HITS: The Blue Devils have two seniors, six juniors, four sophomores and seven freshmen on the 2018 roster...the team is made up of 13 players from Minnesota, four from Wisconsin and one each from Iowa and Illiniois...assistant coach Pam Schroeder begins her 15th season with the Blue Devils, matching hockey assistant coach Greg Slupe as the longest current assistant coaching tenure with a Stout program...

AWARDS: 2018: Steph Cannon was selected WIAC defensive athlete of the week after averaging more than seven digs per set over three matches and 11 sets...Kennedy Strain was selected to the Bethel University all-tournament team...Jessica DuVal was selected to the UW-Oshkosh Pizza Hut all-tournament team...Kennedy Strain was selected to the Oregon Trail  all-tournament team...

THE BLUE DEVILS IN 2017:  Junior middle hitter Kennedy Strain leads the Blue Devils, and is averaging a team-best 2.84 kills per set, 10th in the WIAC, and has put down 23 solo blocks along with 49 block assists for 72 total blocks.  Strain had a season-best 20 kills against Minn-Morris. Freshman Amber Ripley is averaging 2.33 kills, and fellow freshman Emili Cain is averaging 2.03 kills. Ashley Pratt is averaging 2.25 kills, getting 16 against Minn-Morris. Setter Jessica DuVal is fourth in the WIAC in assists with 8.87, and had a career-best 55 vs. Morris. Steph Cannon is averaging 4.99 digs per set, good for fourth in the WIAC. Cannon recorded a career-best 44 digs against Morris, four short of the school individual match record.  | Statistics

DOWN THE ROAD:  The Blue Devils take to the road for the next several weeks, starting at UW-Superior, Tuesday, Oct. 9, at UW-River Falls, Wednesday, Oct. 10 and at UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Oct. 13 where Stout will also face Edgewood College in a non-conference contest.
