Women's Basketball Preview: Finally, a string of home games for Stout

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: After only two games in Johnson Fieldhouse so far this season, the Blue Devils (7-7, 0-3 WIAC) begin a four-game home stand this week by hosting UW-Oshkosh (11-2, 1-2 WIAC), Wednesday, Jan 10 at 7 p.m. and UW-Whitewater (12-2, 2-1 WIAC), Saturday, Jan. 13 at 3 p.m. The Titans are ranked 14th in the latest D3Hoops.com poll. Whitewater is ranked 15th. In the WBCA Top 25 poll, the Titans are tied for 17th and the Warhawks are ranked 19th. The Warhawks were projected to win the conference in a WIAC preseason poll, while the Titans were picked second.

A LOOK AT UW-STOUT:

The Blue Devils have nine returners, with four starters back for the 2017-18 season. Stout has one senior, five juniors, five sophomores and 12 freshmen.
Kyncaide Diedrich has simply picked up where she left off last year. The All-WIAC honorable mention pick is averaging 15.2 points per game, tops in the league, just one-tenth of a point more than teammate Bailey Diersen. Diedrich is in the WIAC's top five in four categories - first in points (15.2), fourth in rebounds (7.2), second in assists (42/3.2),and first in steals (36). She leads the team in scoring, assists, steals and rebounds.
Bailey Diersen is having a banner season and is second on the team and in the WIAC in scoring, averaging 14.7 points per contest. Diersen has scored in double digits in 10 of 14 games this season, with a career-high 27 points in the season opener against the University of Dubuque. Diersen is second on the team and in the WIAC in steals (34).
Sophomore transfer Amber Fabeck is averaging 8.9 points and 5.6 rebounds. The 6-foot-2 post player also has 19 blocked shots on the season, recording five against Martin Luther and three against Hamline, ranking second in the WIAC. Fabeck has shown range from 3-point range, dropping in 15.
Stout is outshooting their opponents from the 3-point line, collecting 91 3-pointers made, compared to 49 made for their opponents. Diedrich has made 18 3-pointers, Fabeck and Haley Seifert 15, and Diersen 14. Stout is third in the WIAC in 3-pointers made at 6.50, behind UW-Oshkosh (7.62) and first-placed UW-River Falls (6.64).
Stout leads the WIAC in steals, averaging 11.71 per game. Diedrich and Diersen and first and second in the conference with steals..
Stout is averaging 65.5 points per game and is giving up 63.0 points.
2017-18 Statistics

CONFERENCE STANDINGS:

The Blue Devils are projected to finish seventh in the WIAC according to a WIAC preseason poll by conference coaches and sports information directors.

STOUT LAST TIME OUT:

UW-Stout struck first, but 14th-ranked UW-Oshkosh quickly answered with a strong first quarter and went on to a 67-57 win over the Blue Devils Wednesday at Johnson Fieldhouse. The Titans scored the first points of the night, but two free throws by Brianna Banks, making her first collegiate start, and a lay-up by Bailey Diersen gave Stout a 4-2 lead. Oshkosh went on a 14-0 run to take a 16-2 lead with 5:04 left in the first period.
The Blue Devils pulled to within seven points, 18-11, with 46 left in the period, and continued the momentum into the second period, getting as close as 18-15 on a Banks layup at 7:54 of the stanza. Oshkosh built the lead back up, finishing the final seven minutes of the half by outscoring Stout 10-4, and a 28-19 halftime lead. Stout got as close as eight points early in the fourth quarter before Oshkosh pulled away.
Oshkosh's Isabella Samuels led all scorers with 16 points. Eliza Campbell added 12 points and Chloe Pustina and Melanie Schneider each scored 10 points. The Titans out-rebounded the Blue Devils, 39-24.
Stout was led by Bailey Diersen with 10 points. Carsyn Osterman scored a career-best eight points and pulled down a best four rebounds. Osterman, along with Diersen and Amber Fabeck, had a team-high four rebounds.

The Blue Devils lost at UW-Platteville, 83-75, Jan. 3 and at UW-Stevens Point, 73-63, Jan. 6
UW-Stout saw a 14-point halftime lead evaporate as UW-Stevens Point outscored the Blue Devils 24-8 in the final period to down the Blue Devils, 73-63, Saturday at Berg Gym. The Pointers (7-6, 1-1 WIAC) were led by Taylor Barrett with a game-high 22 points. Mickey Roland had a huge double-double, putting down 17 points and added 18 rebounds. Brooke Geier finished with 14 points.
Anna Brown led Stout (7-6, 0-2 WIAC) with 16 points, two under her career-best, and Kyncaide Diedrich scored 14 points, all in the first half.
Diedrich scored 12 points in the first quarter to propel Stout to a 28-17 lead at the first break. Stout held as much as a 16 point lead late in the second quarter. The Pointers closed the third quarter on a 10-0 run. The Pointers' Geier (nine points) and Barrett (eight points) combined for 17 points in the fourth quarter.

UW-Platteville's 6-4 center Allison Prestegaard scored 27 points and had 13 rebounds, while UW-Stout's 5-5 guard Kyncaide Diedrich scored a career-best 23 points and had eight rebounds. But the Pioneers outscored the Blue Devils 28-18 in the fourth quarter to take an 83-75 conference-opening win Wednesday in Platteville. Trailing 31-29 at halftime, Diedrich scored nine points in the third period to spark the Blue Devils (7-5, 0-1 WIAC) to a two point 57-55 lead at the end of the period. Diedrich also scored nine points in the final quarter, but the Pioneers (5-7, 1-0 WIAC) outscored Stout 28-18 in the fourth to take the win.
The Pioneers tied the score right away in the fourth quarter, then took a four point, 61-57, lead. A bucket by Bailey Diersen and a 3-pointer by Diedrich gave Stout the lead and the teams traded leads for the next couple of minutes. Platteville again took a four point lead, but Amber Fabeck hit two free throws and Haley Seifert dropped in a buck to tie the game at 68 apiece with four minutes left. The Pioneers went on a 7-0 run and that would be as close as Stout would get.

SCOUTING UW-OSHKOSH

The Titans hold the both the top scoring offense (77.1 ppg) and the top defense (45.1 ppg) in the WIAC, but are coming into Wednesday's game in Menomonie at 0-2 in league play after losing the conference opener to UW-Whitewater on a buzzer beater, then lost at home to UW-La Crosse Saturday. The Titans came into conference play undefeated and were ranked third in the D3Hoops.com Top 25. After the losses, the Titans fell to No. 14 in the latest D3Hoops.com poll.
The Titans have two players scoring in double digits, with Eliza Campbell leading the way with 11.3 points. Campbell is knocking on the 1000-point door. The senior has 990 career points and will be playing in her 101st career game tonight. Emma Melotik is averaging 10.3 points and gets the majority of her points from beyond the arc, dropping in a league-best 31 3-pointers, averaging 2.58 per contest. Isabella Samuels is notching a team-best 5.3 rebounds, with Campbell pulling down 5.1 boards. The Titans hold a 41.8-28.3 advantage in rebounds.
The Titans last year won the regular season title with a 13-1 league record, but lost to UW-Whitewater in the WIAC Tournament title game. Oshkosh received a bid to their fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament, advancing to the Sweet 16 where they lost to Washington University.

THE TITANS LAST TIME OUT

UW-La Crosse converted eight of its nine free throws during the last 30 seconds en route to upsetting the nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team, 57-51, on Saturday (Jan. 6) in Kolf Sports Center.
UW-La Crosse (8-5, 1-1 WIAC) led the entire game after scoring the first six points. The Eagles, who snapped a six-game losing streak to UW-Oshkosh, held a 50-42 advantage with 2:25 left, but the Titans pulled within 50-48 following a steal and a layup from Olivia Campbell with 36.1 seconds remaining.

THE LAST TIME OSHKOSH AND STOUT MET

Heading into tonight's game at UW-Oshkosh, UW-Stout fully well knew they would have to come up with a win over the conference champion to earn a spot in the WIAC tournament next week. The Titans flew out of the gates, Feb. 18, 2017, and squashed the Blue Devils' chances by outscoring Stout 22-5 in the first quarter. Stout spent the rest of the night running uphill and lost 71-53 at Kolf Sports Center. Stout would only get as close as 15 points during the game and the season came to a halt.Blue Devil senior Jenna Goldsmith needed 11 points to reach 1000 career points and the post player scored her final collegiate points midway through the fourth quarter, finishing the night with 12 points and 1001 career points.

UW-Oshkosh went on a 14-0 run in the fourth quarter, partially inspired by three steals by Taylor Schmidt, and the 13th-ranked Titans ran off to a 64-58 win over UW-Stout, Jan. 7, 2017, in Johnson Fieldhouse. With the Blue Devils leading 56-46 with 7:04 remaining in the game, the Titans got a pair of free throws from Kylie Moe, and a 3-pointer and two buckets by Eliza Campbell to pull the Titans to within 56-55 at 4:46. Schmidt then rolled off three consecutive steals, converting the second two steals into layups to give Oshkosh a 57-56 lead, a lead they would not give up.

SCOUTING UW-WHITEWATER

A year ago, the Warhawks won their first-ever WIAC tournament title and made their ninth NCAA appearance in the last 10 years. UW-Whitewater welcomes back all five starters from that unit, including senior guards Brooke Trewyn and Malia Smith. Trewyn topped the conference with 15.2 points per game, while ranking third with 68 assists and 49 steals, and fourth with 7.0 rebounds per contest. Smith led the league with 76 steals and placed second with a .815 free-throw percentage (97-of-119).
Trewyn leads the team in both scoring (11.7) and rebounding (6.4). Malia Smith is averaging 10.8 points, Andrea Meinert 9.1 and Camri Conley 8.9. Smith leads the team in 3-point shots made with 20. The Warhawks average the fewest 3-pointers made. Whitewater allows 3.8 3-pointers per game, second only to Stout's 3.4. Meinert is averaging 5.6 rebounds and Smith 4.9. The Warhawks average 66.5 points and give up 53.4.

THE WARHAWKS LAST TIME OUT

Whitewater women's basketball team posted a complete performance Wednesday night in a 86-61 victory against UW-Eau Claire in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup at Kachel Gymnasium. The Warhawks sank 11 threes and forced 20 UW-Eau Claire turnovers in the matchup.
Senior guard Malia Smith lead the Warhawks with a season-high 23 points, four rebounds, and three steals. Sophomore guard Becky Raeder added a career-high 17 points and senior guard Brooke Trewyn tallied 10 points.

Whitewater women's basketball team was on the wrong side of a buzzer-beating, game-winning basket, falling 51-48 at UW-River Falls, Jan. 6. Three days after defeating No. 3 UW-Oshkosh on a shot by as time expired, the Warhawks (11-2 overall, 1-1 WIAC) were downed on a last-second 3-pointer by the Falcons' Brynn Liljander only seconds after senior guard Brooke Trewyn tied the game at 48-48 with a free throw.

THE LAST TIME WHITEWATER AND STOUT MET

UW-Stout went on a huge 25-6 run in the second quarter and opened up a 35-19 lead by the end of the first half. Stout held on to the big gap through the second half to take a WIAC victory from No. 19 Whitewater Feb. 4, 2017. Kyncaide Diedrich dropped 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds on her way to a double-double, while Jenna Goldsmith scored a game high 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting and blocking five shots. Whitewater's Reilly Stewart scored 17 points, making three 3-pointers, but all of those came over the first three quarters. Needing to play catch-up, Whitewater tossed just about anything up in the final quarter, shooting only 11 percent in the final stanza.

UW-Stout rallied from a 20-17 deficit at the end of the first quarter deficit and led or was tied for much of the game through the third quarter. But 20th-ranked UW-Whitewater outscored the young Blue Devils 23-9 in the fourth quarter to escape with a 74-63 win Jan. 21, 2017, at Kachel Gym. The game was tied for the 13th time at 54-54 with 8:36 left in the fourth when Whitewater went on a 12-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 66-54 lead at 5:24. The Blue Devils had three players score in double figures. Jenna Goldsmith led the way with 19 points, and was just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds. Bailey Diersen tossed in 17 points and Kyncaide Diedrich added 12 points. The Warhawks' Reilly Stewart came off the bench to match Goldsmith's 19 points. Brooke Trewyn had 18 points and Becky Deichl contributed 14 points.

A DEFENSIVE EFFORT NOT SEEN IN MORE THAN 35 YEARS

If the Blue Devils were smarting after seeing a 10-game winning streak stopped last season against Northland College, Stout made the Lumberjills pay for the transgression Dec. 2 with a 68-26 win in Johnson Fieldhouse.
The 26 points by the Lumberjills was the fewest points Stout has allowed during the Mark Thomas era. The school mark stretches back to the 1970s when women's basketball games were not nearly as high scoring on either side, with both teams at times scoring in the 20s and 30s. During the 1976-77 season, Stout defeated UW-Barron County by scores of 40-19 and 62-26. The next year, the Blue Devils defeated Barron County, a two-year school, 53-26.During the 1972-73 season, Stout's wins of the season came in back-to-back wins over a pair of two-year UW schools, a 38-16 win at UW-Waukesha, followed by a 36-18 win over UW-Fond du Lac. The 16 points is the fewest allowed in school history.
During Thomas' 31 seasons, the fewest points allowed by Stout was 33 in a 95-33 win over Crown College, Nov. 15, 2011.

THE COACHES:
UW-STOUT:

Mark Thomas (472-335) is in his 31st year as the coach of the Blue Devils and is the longest tenured head coach in Blue Devil history. Terry Petrie coached the Blue Devil baseball team for 30 seasons
Thomas has led his teams to 10 national playoff berths, nine times in the NCAA. A six-time WIAC coach of the year, the Blue Devils have won five conference titles and four conference tournament championships under Thomas' tutelage. His teams have twice been to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament.
Thomas is the first WIAC coach to have reached 400 career wins. Thomas also has the most wins of any Stout basketball coach, either men's or women's. Dwain Mintz coached the men's basketball program for 27 years and compiled a 385-280 record. .

UW-OSHKOSH:

Brad Fischer (128-29) is in his sixth season as the head coach at UW-Oshkosh. Under Fischer's guidance, UW-Oshkosh is one of eight Division III women's programs to win at least one game at each of the past four NCAA postseasons as the Titans reached the third round in 2014 and 2017 and advanced to the second round in 2015 and 2016. Fischer earned 2014 Central Region Coach of the Year honors from D3hoops.com as well as WIAC Coach of the Year plaudits in 2013 and 2017. Fischer helped UW-Oshkosh win the 2017 WIAC regular season title in addition to three consecutive league tournament championships from 2014-16.

UW-WHITEWATER:

Keri Carollo (301-136) is in her 16th season as the head coach at UW-Whitewater and recently picked up her 300th win, becoming only the fourth WIAC women's basketball coach to record 300 career wins. The Warhawks have four conference titles under Carollo's tutelage, and have advanced to the NCAA tournament nine of the last 10 years.
Carollo was an assistant coach at UW-Stout for three seasons from 1999-2001.

THE ROAD TO 400 WINS: Mark Thomas' first collegiate win came the second game of his first season when his Blue Devils, which had won only two games over the previous two years, defeated Mt. Senario, 73-44, in November, 1987. The wins came more often after that. Thomas got his 50th win, Feb. 28, 1991, 71-60, over Cardinal Stritch. The 100th win came Jan. 10, 1994, an 80-59 win over UM-Morris. No. 200 came at UW-River Falls, a 78-74 victory on Jan. 5, 2000. Thomas' 300th win came in overtime, a 76-68 decision over UW-Stevens Point, Jan. 29, 2005. Thomas' 400th win came at UW-Stevens Point, a 90-76 decision, Feb. 3, 2010.

CONFERENCE: UW-Stout is a member of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-Eau Claire. UW-Oshkosh, UW-La Crosse, UW-Stevens Point, UW- Platteville, UW-River Falls, and UW-Whitewater.

UP NEXT: Stout will host UW-Eau Claire, Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 6 p.m. as part of a doubleheader evening with the men's programs. The Blue Devils will close out their four-game home stretch by hosting UW-River Falls, Saturday, Jan. 20 at 3 p.m.
