Women's Basketball Preview: Stout takes long trip to ranked Whitewater

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: UW-Stout (7-13, 0-9 WIAC) begins a three-game road run when they travel to UW-Eau Claire (13-6, 5-3 WIAC), Wednesday, Jan. 31 for a 6 p.m. start in a doubleheader with the men's programs. A LOOK AT UW-STOUT:
  • The Blue Devils have nine returners, with four starters back for the 2017-18 season. Stout has one senior, five juniors, five sophomores and 12 freshmen.
  • Kyncaide Diedrich has been on a tear as of late, scoring no fewer than 15 points in each of the last five games. The conference's leading scorer averaging 16.5 points per game, Diedrich scored 17 points against UW-Eau Claire, a career-best 34 points against UW-River Falls, 23 at UW-Lar Crosse, 21 against UW-Platteville and 15 points against Eau Claire the second time around. Diedrich has been the team's leading scorer in 10 games. Diedrich is hitting 112-of-276 shots from the floor (.406), 30-of-94 shots from 3-point range (.319) and 61-of-83 from the free throw line (.735). Diedrich appears in the top 15 in eight different statistical categories for the WIAC - scoring (1st, 16.6 ppg),  steals (1st, 2.61), assists (3rd, 3.18), rebounds (5th, 6.7), free throw percentage (6th, .735), 3-point made (8th, 1.58), field goal percentage (15th, .406) and 3-point percentage (15th, .319).
  • Bailey Diersen has been having solid season as well. Diersen is second in the WIAC in scoring with 15.2 points per game, is first in steals (2.65), 10th in 3-pointers made (1.15) and 14th in free throw percentage (.683). Diersen has scored in double digits the last seven games and has done so in 17 of the 20 games. Diesen has been the team's leading scorer in seven games.
  • Amber Fabeck is averaging 8.6 points and is third in the WIAC in blocked shots, averaging 1.20 per game, and is second on the team in rebounds with 5.8 per game. Fabeck had a season-high five blocked shots against Martin Luther College in early December. Anna Brown is averaging 6.0 points.
  • Haley Seifert had a career-day against UW-River Falls, scoring a career-best 15 points.
  • Stout is outshooting their opponents from the 3-point line, dropping in  129 3-pointers made, compared to 90 made for their opponents. Diedrich has made 30 3-pointers, Diersen 23, and Haley Siefert 20 and Fabeck 20. Stout is third in the WIAC in 3-pointers made at 6.5.
  • Stout leads the WIAC in steals, averaging 10.55 per game. Diersen and Diedrich and first and second in the conference with steals..
  • Stout is averaging 67.2 points per game and is giving up 69.9 points.

CONFERENCE STANDINGS:
  • The Blue Devils are projected to finish seventh in the WIAC according to a WIAC preseason poll by conference coaches and sports information directors.

STOUT LAST TIME OUT:
  • UW-Eau Claire used a big third quarter to push past UW-Stout Wednesday in a WIAC contest at Zorn Arena for an 85-62 win. The Blue Devils ran up a 10 point lead in the first period, jumping out to a 14-4 lead over the first five minutes of the game. The Blue Devils fought off any Blugold counter attack and held a 29-20 lead midway through the second period. Eau Claire came back to take a 32-31 lead, but a 3-pointer by Kyncaide Diedrich, a layup by Anna Brown and free throw by Bailey Diersen gave Stout a 37-32 halftime lead. Stout made it 39-32 on an Amber Fabeck jumper 20 seconds into the second half. The Blugolds (14-6, 6-3 WIAC) took a 44-41 lead over the next three minutes, but Diedrich tied the game with a 3-pointer. It would be Blugolds the rest of the way as Eau Claire outscored Stout 20-2 over the remainder of the quarter and led 64-46 at the third intermission. Eau Claire outscored Stout 32-9 in the period.

  • UW-Platteville outscored UW-Stout 28-16 in the final quarter to bolt past the Blue Devils Saturday at Johnson Fieldhouse. Stout held a nine-point lead midway through the third period and held onto that lead through the end of the period, taking a 67-60 lead into the final quarter. as Platteville won for the second time this year, 88-83, Jan. 27

  • UW-Stout held the lead for much of the first two periods, but UW-La Crosse went on a 16-4 run to end the second quarter and take a one-point lead at halftime and went on to a 79-64 win over the Blue Devils Wednesday at Mitchell Hall.

SCOUTING UW-EAU CLAIRE
  • Anna Grasskamp is the team's leading scorer with 16.1 points per contest and the team's leading rebounder with 5.8 caroms per contest. The post player missed five games to start off January, but returned for the game against Stout where she scored eight points. Grasskamp would be ranked second in the WIAC, but has only played in 13 games and the league requires 75 percent of games played. Hallee Hoeppner scored 21 points against the Blue Devils two weeks ago and is averaging 10.2 points. Kelsey Bakken is matching Hoeppner's 10.2 points. Hoeppner and Bakken are the only two Blugolds to have started all 19 games this year. Bakken has one more total point than Hoeppner and ranks 11th in the league in scoring, while Hoeppner ranks 12th. Hoeppner leads the WIAC in minutes played (30.8). Maddie Dunathon leads the WIAC in assists, tossing off 3.37 per game. As team, the Blugolds average 66.7 points and give up 57.7. Eau Claire started off the season with a seven game winning streak.

THE BLUGOLDS LAST TIME OUT
  • Eau Claire women's basketball team battled back from two double digit deficits thanks to 24 points from Anna Graaskamp, but fell just short, 61-58 to the No. 18 UW-Whitewater Warhawks in Zorn Arena, Jan. 27.

THE LAST TIME EAU CLAIRE AND STOUT MET
  • UW-Eau Claire jumped out to a big lead over UW-Stout in the first period and went on to a 94-62 win over the Blue Devils Jan. 17 at Johnson Fieldhouse. The Blugolds took a 17-4 lead in the first five minutes of the game.  Stout did outscore Eau Claire 15-11 in second period to pull to within nine, 36-27, at halftime. That would be as close as Stout would get for the remainder of the game.

  • The Blugolds have won the last five meetings. Stout's last win over Eau Claire came Jan. 28, 2015, in Menomonie, 61-59.


SCOUTING UW-WHITEWATER
  • A year ago, the Warhawks won their first-ever WIAC tournament title and made their ninth NCAA appearance in the last 10 years. UW-Whitewater returns five starters, including senior guards Brooke Trewyn and Malia Smith. Trewyn topped the conference with 15.2 points per game, while ranking third with 68 assists and 49 steals, and fourth with 7.0 rebounds per contest. Smith led the league with 76 steals and placed second with a .815 free-throw percentage (97-of-119).
  • Trewyn leads the team in both scoring (12.4) and has pulled dow 6.1 rebounds. Olivia Freckman is averaging a team-best 6.8 rebounds. Malia Smith is averaging 10.6 points, Andrea Meinert 9.9 and Camri Conley 8.3. Meinert is averaging 5.3 rebounds and Smith 4.2.  The Warhawks average 66.5 points and give up 54.7.

THE WARHAWKS LAST TIME OUT
  • Whitewater defeated UW-Stevens Point 71-54 in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest Wednesday evening.The Warhawks  (17-3 overall, 7-3 WIAC) outscored the Pointers 22-4 and shot 69.2 percent compared to 15.4 percent by the UW-Stevens Point in the fourth quarter. Senior forward Andrea Meinert (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) lead the Warhawks with 15 points. Senior guard Malia Smith (Bolingbrook, Ill./Neuqua Valley), junior center Sarah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater), and sophomore guard Camri Conley (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) each added 12 points for UW-Whitewater.

  • Whitewater made its trademark third-quarter push and executed in the final minute of the game Jan. 27 in a 61-58 triumph at UW-Eau Claire in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown in Eau Claire. The Warhawks, who are outscoring their opponents by nearly 100 points in the third quarter this season, turned a 33-33 tie into a 46-35 advantage late in the third and hit 6-of-6 from the free-throw line over the final 46 seconds of regulation

THE LAST TIME WHITEWATER AND STOUT MET
  • UW-Stout made a run at UW-Whitewater, taking a two-point lead in the fourth quarter against the 19th-ranked Warhawks, but Whitewater regained control to hand the Blue Devils a 76-67 defeat Jan. 13 at Johnson Fieldhouse. Stout battled back from an 11-point deficit in the third period, outscoring Whitewater 14-6 over the final five minutes of the quarter, to trail 55-52 at the end of the third period. The Blue Devils forged ahead, 59-57, at 7:54 of the fourth quarter as Amber Fabeck led off the period on two free throws  and Bailey Diersen gave Stout the lead with a bucket and 3-pointer.

A DEFENSIVE EFFORT NOT SEEN IN MORE THAN 35 YEARS
  • If the Blue Devils were smarting after seeing a 10-game winning streak stopped last season against Northland College, Stout made the Lumberjills pay for the transgression Dec. 2 with a 68-26 win in Johnson Fieldhouse.
  • The 26 points by the Lumberjills was the fewest points Stout has allowed during the Mark Thomas era. The school mark stretches back to the 1970s when women's basketball games were not nearly as high scoring on either side, with both teams at times scoring in the 20s and 30s. During the 1976-77 season, Stout defeated UW-Barron County by scores of 40-19 and 62-26. The next year, the Blue Devils defeated Barron County, a two-year school, 53-26.During the 1972-73 season, Stout's wins of the season came in back-to-back wins over a pair of two-year UW schools, a 38-16 win at UW-Waukesha, followed by a 36-18 win over UW-Fond du Lac. The 16 points is the fewest allowed in school history.
  • During Thomas' 31 seasons, the fewest points allowed by Stout was 33 in a 95-33 win over Crown College, Nov. 15, 2011.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Kyncaide Diedrich, Jr, Athens, Wis.

AWARDS AND HONORS: 2017-18: Kyncaide Diedrich was selected as the UW-Stout/Toppers Athlete of the Week, Jan. 1 after being named to the D3Hoops.com All-Tournament team...Bailey Diersen was selected as the UW-Stout/Toppers Athlete of the Week, Nov. 20, after scoring 27 points against the University of Dubuque and 17 points against UW-Superior to open the weekend.

TEAM CAPTAINS: Team captains for the 2017-18 season are Anna Brown, Kyncaide Diedrich and Bailey Diersen.

THE COACHES:
UW-STOUT:
  • Mark Thomas (472-341) is in his 31st year as the coach of the Blue Devils and is the longest tenured head coach in Blue Devil history. Terry Petrie coached the Blue Devil baseball team for 30 seasons.
  • Thomas has led his teams to 10 national playoff berths, nine times in the NCAA. A six-time WIAC coach of the year, the Blue Devils have won five conference titles and four conference tournament championships under Thomas' tutelage. His teams have twice been to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament.
  • Thomas is the first WIAC coach to have reached 400 career wins. Thomas also has the most wins of any Stout basketball coach, either men's or women's. Dwain Mintz coached the men's basketball program for 27 years and compiled a 385-280 record. .

UW-EAU CLAIRE:
  • Tonja Englund (310-177) is in her 18th season at Eau Claire. The Blugolds finished off their 2016-2017 season fifth in the WIAC with a 7-7 record, and a 13-13 record overall. Coming into the 2017-2018 season Englund's 297 wins ranks fourth most in WIAC history. In 2015-16 Englund became UW-Eau Claire's winningest women's basketball coach. Englund has four WIAC Championships in her tenure (2001,2003,2008,2012) as well as five NCAA tournament appearances.
UW-WHITEWATER:
  • Keri Carollo (308-137) is in her 16th season as the head coach at UW-Whitewater and recently picked up her 300th win, becoming only the fourth WIAC women's basketball coach to record 300 career wins. The Warhawks have four conference titles under Carollo's tutelage, and have advanced to the NCAA tournament nine of the last 10 years.
  • Carollo was an assistant coach at UW-Stout for three seasons from 1999-2001.


THE ROAD TO 400 WINS: Mark Thomas' first collegiate win came the second game of his first season when his Blue Devils, which had won only two games over the previous two years, defeated Mt. Senario, 73-44, in November, 1987. The wins came more often after that. Thomas got his 50th win, Feb. 28, 1991, 71-60, over Cardinal Stritch. The 100th win came Jan. 10, 1994, an 80-59 win over UM-Morris. No. 200 came at UW-River Falls, a 78-74 victory on Jan. 5, 2000. Thomas' 300th win came in overtime, a 76-68 decision over UW-Stevens Point, Jan. 29, 2005. Thomas' 400th win came at UW-Stevens Point, a 90-76 decision, Feb. 3, 2010.

CONFERENCE: UW-Stout is a member of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-Eau Claire. UW-Oshkosh, UW-La Crosse, UW-Stevens Point, UW- Platteville, UW-River Falls, and UW-Whitewater.

UP NEXT: Stout closes out a three-game road trip by traveling to UW-River Falls, Wednesday, Feb. 7, then returns home Saturday, Feb. 10 to face UW-Stevens Point at 3 p.m.
