FORT MYERS, Fla (March 17, 2017) - UW-Stout came out on the wrong end of both a lopsided game and a nailbiter as the Blue Devils fell to Western Connecticut State, 20-3, and to North Park State, 8-6, in 10 innings Friday at the Gene Cusic Classic.
In the opener, WestConn jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the second. The Blue Devils put up a run in the fourth inning on
Ryan Connor's RBI single, but the Colonials scored six in the fourth, three in the fifth and six more in the seventh before Stout added two runs in the eighth.
Jordan Wilson plated
Derek Graves, who had hit a two-out triple, and Wilson scored on a single by
Kasey Bass.
The Colonials recorded 17 hits and Stout did not help their cause with seven errors. The Blue Devils had six hits, two by
Matt Emmer.
In the second game, the Blue Devils took a 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning.
Sam Waters doubled with one out, then came home on
Noah Brown's double.
Joel Hollow's double brought in both Waters and Brown.
The Vikings cut the the lead to 3-2 with two runs in the second, then took a 5-3 lead with a three-run third inning. Brown and Wilson hit back-to-back doubles in the third inning to cut the lead to 5-4. Stout tied the lead in the sixth when
Ben Vanhove scored on a passed ball, but the Vikings jumped out 6-5 in the eighth.
The Blue Devils took advantage of several Vikings pitching miscues to tie the score in the bottom of the eighth. Vanhove reached on a single, then consecutive wild pitches moved Vanhove first to second, then to third and he scored on
Tim Bott's sacrifice fly to right.
Following a scoreless ninth inning, North Park scored twice in the 10th before hitting into an inning-ending double play. The Blue Devils went down in order to end the game.
Waters and Brown each had two hits for Stout. North Park had 13 hits, while Stout collected nine.
Stout will close out the Florida trip Saturday, March 18 when they play Edgewood College at 9 a.m. (ET)
