NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 15, 2017) - After smashing out 15 hits in an 18-6, six inning win over Alfred State, UW-Stout was still able to get runners on base, but crossing the plate was the problem in an 8-3 loss to Bay Path College Wednesday at the Fastpitch Dreams Classic.
Against Alfred, the teams were even after three innings, 2-2, and again after the fourth inning, 6-6. But Stout (4-4) exploded for seven runs in the fifth and five more runs in the sixth inning to end the game on the 8-run rule.
Kyncaide Diedrich drove in three runs, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored to lead the rout.
Heather Bol drove in a pair of runs, going 2-for-5 with two runs scored and punched a double.
Beth Wood was 3-for-4, cranking out two doubles and driving in a run.Â
Katelyn Schobert was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and
Kim Jablonski was 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
Kaylee Francois had a double and drove in a run, along with scoring twice.
Christel Weltzin came out of the bullpen in the bottom of the fourth inning as Alfred (0-5) tied the game and allowed only three hits and no runs in 2.2 innings of work to get her first career win.
Melissa Barber was 3-for-4 with five RBI for Alfred, rapping out a pair of doubles. Annie Corrao was 2-for-3.
In the second game of the morning, Bay Path (4-2) scored twice in the first inning, but the Blue Devils came back to get a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to knot the score.
Rachel Thomas put down a bunt for a hit that scored
Kaitlin Murray and Diedrich came home after she took third. When the ball sailed over third base, Diedrich scored.
The Wildcats scored four runs in the fourth inning, taking advantage of a Blue Devil error after two outs. After two outs was a common theme as Bay Path scored their final six runs of the game with two outs, adding a single run in the sixth and seventh innings, when it looked like Stout would get out of the inning.
The Blue Devils finished with nine hits.
Jessica Daley was the only Blue Devil to get more than one hit, going 2-for-4 and scoring the final run of the game, as Stout added one run in the bottom of the seventh.
The Blue Devils will take Thursday, March 16, off before returning to action Friday, March 17. Stout will complete a suspended game with Rutgers-Camden at 12:30 pm. (ET), then will play a second game with the Raptors following the completion of the suspended game. Rutgers was leading 8-1 with Stout coming to bat in the bottom of the fourth.
The Blue Devils will finish out the spring break trip Saturday, March 18 when they play Westminster College in a doubleheader.
