WIAC Women's Tennis Championship
MADISON (October 21, 2017) -
Kennedy Kleist (Fr, Eau Claire) was part of a pair of wins on the first day of 2017 WIAC Women's Tennis Championship Saturday at Nielsen Tennis Stadium on the campus of the University of Wisconsin.
Kleist won her opening match at No. 6 singles, downing Elizabeth Wilichowski of UW-Stevens Point 6-2, 6-2. Kleist was the fourth seed, Wilichowski the fifth seed. At No. 3 doubles, Kleist teamed with
Gabe Kelch (So, Menomonie) to take a first round match, 8-6, over the Pointers' Wilichowski and Anna Dobbe. The win was a mild upset. Kleist and Kelch were seeded fifth to the Pointers' fourth. Kleist and Kelch lost in their second round match, 8-2, to UW-Whitewater and will play in the third place match Sunday.
The first two rounds of doubles and the first round of singles was played on the first day of the championship.
At No. 1 singles, Natalie Wijesinghe of UW-Eau Claire defeated
Linsey Thisius (Jr, Wells, Minn), 6-2, 6-1. At No. 2 singles, Sarah Henderson of UW-Eau Claire defeated
Katie Kreibich (Jr, Woodbury, Minn), 6-1, 6-0. At. No. 3 singles, Hannah Peters of UW-Oshkosh defeated
Annie Sandry (So, Clara City, Minn), 6-1, 6-0. At No. 4 singles, Kendra Berry of UW-Eau Claire defeated
Jenna Welke (Sr, Chippewa Falls), 6-0, 6-0. At No. 5 singles, Lesley Kutnink of UW-Oshkosh defeated Kelch, 6-0, 6-3.
In doubles, Sarah Henderson/Natalie Wijesinghe of UW-Eau Claire defeated Thisius and Kreibich at No. 1 doubles, 8-0. Thisius and Kreibich had a second round bye and will compete in the fifth place match.
Alexandra Talyansky and Paige Nierman of UW-Whitewater defeated Sandry and Welke, 8-2, at No. 2 double. But the pair bounced back to down UW-River Falls' Molly Deering and Hannah Andress, 9-8 (4), to get into the fifth place match tomorrow.
The tournament will wrap-up Sunday, Oct. 22.
