WBB Preview: Blue Devils to face nationally ranked Titans

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (5-7, 0-0 WIAC) open the WIAC schedule this week when they travel to UW-Platteville (4-7, 0-0 WIAC), Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 7 p.m., then return home to face conference favorite UW-Oshkosh (10-1, 0-0 WIAC), Saturday, Jan. 7 at 3 p.m.

A LOOK AT UW-STOUT: Kyncaide Diedrich, Jenna Goldsmith, Bailey Diersen, and Shannah Watkins are all averaging more than 10 points per contest. Diedrich leads the Blue Devils with 13.6 points, followed by Diersen with 12.1, Goldsmith 10.8, Watkins 10.3. Watkins has been out the last three games. Diedrich ranks fourth, Diersen ninth, Goldsmith 12th, Watkins 15th and Anna Brown, who is averaging 8.8 points, is 18th. Brown, has started all 12 games and leads the team in shooting percentage (.469), where she ranks sixth in the WIAC. Goldsmith leads the team in rebounds (6.9), followed by the 5-foot-5 Diedrich with 6.3. Goldsmith is third in the league in rebounds and third in blocked shots (1.67). . As a team, Stout is third in the WIAC in scoring at 69.4 and is giving up 68.9.


CONFERENCE STANDINGS: The Blue Devils are projected to finish sixth in the WIAC. Last season, the Blue Devils were the highest scoring offense in the WIAC, averaging 69.4 points per game. They also were second in the WIAC in rebounds per game, with 41.2 per game. The Blue Devils look to improve on these even more this season and will look to their six returners to take them there.

STOUT LAST TIME OUT: Kyncaide Diedrich scored Stout's first double-double of the season and UW-Stout went on to a 72-59 conference opening win at UW-Platteville Wednesday. Diedrich was only 3-of-15 from the field, with one 3-pointer, but made the Pioneers pay at the free throw line where she drained 10-of-11 charity shots. Diedrich was also opportunistic off the glass, pulling down 10 rebounds. Diedrich dished off seven assists, flirting with a triple double. Jenna Goldsmith added 12 points and Becky Fesenmaier chipped in nine for the Blue Devils. Carolyn Feddema led Stout with nine rebounds. Stout was stellar at the line, setting a new school record by shooting 94.1 percent (16-17). Diedrich was 10-11, while Anna Brown, Feddema and Becky Fesenmaier each made both of their attempts. |  Story and Box Score |

SCOUTING UW-PLATTEVILLE

• The 104 points scored in Thursday's win over Rivier College is the most scored by any Pioneer team in coach Megan Wilson's seven years at the helm. UW-Platteville did score 90 points earlier this year in a 99-90 loss to Luther College on Nov. 22.
• The Pioneers are led in scoring by Morgan Horstman, who is averaging 14.5 points
• Allison Prestegaard leads the league in blocked shots (3.70), and was ranked fourth nationally in the most recent NCAA statistical report. At 6-4, Prestegaard is the tallest in the conference. As a freshman last year, Prestegaard topped the league with 2.72 blocked shots per contest.
• The Pioneers are second in the league in scoring (70.8) and eighth in scoring defense (71.7).

PIONEERS LAST TIME OUT

• The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's basketball team picked up its fourth win of the season with a dominating 104-64 victory over the Rivier University (N.H.) Raiders Thursday morning in the second game of the Division III Puerto Rico Classico.
• It was a track meet from the opening tip as the Pioneers scored 34 points in the opening quarter to build a 13-point lead.
• Sophomore guard Morgan Horstman scored 11 of her team-high 17 points in the first six minutes to stake UW-Platteville to an early 17-11 lead.

LAST YEAR WHEN STOUT AND PLATTEVILLE MET

• The Blue Devils handily won both contests last year, 77-47, Jan. 16 in Platteville and 99-71, Feb. 20 in Menomonie to close out the regular season.
• The Blue Devils were fueled by a third quarter, 16-2 run, to increase their lead and blow past the Pioneers in the teams first meeting in January in Platteville. They were led by Jenna Goldsmith and Kyleigh Hebert. Goldsmith had 19 points and seven rebounds, while Hebert added 14 points and four assists.
• UW-Stout turned up the heat in the third period of their duel against UW-Platteville. The Blue Devils' stifling defense paired with their fast break offense put Stout on a 40-15 run in the third quarter. The Blue Devils forced 12 turnovers in the third and scored 21 points off of those turnovers. This win on Senior Day sealed the regular season for the Blue Devils.
• The teams are scheduled to meet again. Jan. 28, in Menomonie

SCOUTING UW-OSHKOSH

• The Titans are currently ranked 13th in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 poll. The Titans only loss this season has been a four point, 60-56 loss to DePauw University on Dec. 20 in Puerto Rico.
• The Titans won their third consecutive WIAC tournament title a year ago to advance to the NCAA Division III championship for the third straight year and welcome back three starters and 14 letterwinners.
• Leading the returnees is senior guard Taylor Schmidt, a two-time All-WIAC first team selection, who was first on the team with 11.0 points per game and 109 field goals made, while ranking second with 78 assists and 44 steals. Her .416 three-point field goal percentage (37-of-89) topped the conference. Also back is junior forward Eliza Campbell, an All-WIAC first team choice last season, who was second on the squad with 9.3 points per game, while ranking third with 133 rebounds and 37 steals.
• Eliza Campbell (11.9) and Taylor Schmidt (11.1) lead the Titans in scoring. Campbell ranks 10th in the WIAC and Schmidt 11th. Alex Richards leads the team off the glass with 6.3 boards, ranking seventh in the league. Morgan Kotka leads the team in assists (2.2).
• Oshkosh is the stingiest team in the country, allowing only 41.5 points per game. The Titans average 66.1 points per contest, giving them a whopping 24.6 point scoring margin, which is seventh in the country..

TITANS LAST TIME OUT

• Eliza Campbell matched her season high with 18 points as Oshkosh pulled away for a 62-53 victory over UW-Stevens Point  Wednesday in Kolf Sports Center.
• Alex Richard tallied 14 points and Taylor Schmidt contributed 12 points, a career-best eight rebounds and two assists.
• UW-Oshkosh converted 17 of 22 attempts at the free throw line while UW-Stevens Point went 6-for-7 from the charity stripe.
• The Pointers are just the second opponent this season to shoot better than 40 percent from the floor against the Titans, who entered the contest ranked fifth nationally by limiting teams to 29.9 percent. The Pointers were holding teams to 35 percent from the floor.
• UW-Oshkosh also went into the game leading the country with 40.5 points allowed per game and second with 11.5 turnovers per contest.

 

LAST YEAR WHEN STOUT AND OSHKOSH MET

• The teams split last year with each winning on their opponent's floor. The Titans won in Menomonie, 65-50, Jan. 23, but the Blue Devils turned around for a 59-52 win in Oshkosh, Feb. 6.
• Stout fell short in their first battle of the season against Oshkosh in the teams first battle last January. Falling behind early, it was an uphill climb that could not be overcome. The Blue Devils had two players in double figures. Kylie Hebert led the team with 16 points and Kyncaide Diedrich scored a career-high 12 points.
• UW-Stout spoiled UW-Oshkosh's day as the Blue Devils went on to upset the No. 10 ranked Titans. Stout found a late 53-51 lead over Oshkosh after a layup by Jenna Goldsmith that was assisted by Kyncaide Diedrich. The Blue Devils then went on to score six of the last seven points of the game to take the win. Goldsmith led Stout with 15 points, eight rebounds and four blocks.
• The teams are scheduled to meet again Feb. 18 in Oshkosh. That game is set for 7 p.m., but the time could flex depending on scheduling at the Kolf Sports Center in Oshkosh.

JOINING THE MIAC?: For the second year in a row, the Blue Devils will see considerable action with the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). Stout opens the season with five straight MIAC opponents - Augsburg College, St. Mary's University, the College of St. Benedict, Hamline University, St. Catherine University and Gustavus Adolphus College before finishing up the MIAC schedule with Bethel University and the Carleton College at the Just A Game Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells the end of December. Stout played six of the same teams last year, and added a pair of MIAC schools to the schedule to bring that total up to eight. - that's three-quarters of the 12 MIAC women's basketball teams.

AWARDS AND HONORS: Kyncaide Diedrich was the UW-Stout/DigiCopy Athlete of the Wee, Jan. 3...Shannan Watkins was the UW-Stout/DigiCopy Athlete of the Week, Dec. 12...Jenna Goldsmith was the WIAC athlete of the week, Dec. 6, after scoring a career-high 28 points in a 94-90 shootout loss to Northland College, Nov. 29...Kyncaide Diedrich selected to St. Benedict all-tournament team, Nov. 20...Jenna Goldsmith was an all-WIAC honorable mention selection and now assistant coach Kyleigh Hebert was a first team all-WIAC pick...

THE COACHES: UW-Stout: Mark Thomas (463-317) is in his 30th year as the coach of the Blue Devils. Thomas has led his teams to 10 national playoff berths, nine times in the NCAA. A six-time WIAC coach of the year, the Blue Devils have won five conference titles and four conference tournament championships under Thomas' tutelage. His teams have twice been to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. Thomas is the first WIAC coach to have reached 400 career wins. Thomas also has the most wins of any Stout basketball coach, either men's or women's. Dwain Mintz coached the men's basketball program for 27 years and compiled a 385-280 record. . UW-PLATTEVILLE: Megan Wilson (56-107), a member of two Wisconsin high school championship teams and an NCAA Division III national championship squad, is in her fifth season as the head women's basketball coach at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Wilson led the Pioneers to two of their best back-to-back seasons in school history in 2013-14 and 2014-15. In 2014-15, the Pioneers finished 15-11 and finished tied for fourth in the WIAC for the second season in a row, a feat that has been accomplished only one other time in program history. The Pioneers hosted the first home WIAC tournament game in program history. The Pioneers shattered the single-season turnover average, limiting themselves to just 12.9 turnovers-per-game, which was good for eighth best in Division III. UW-OSHKOSH: Brad Fischer (103-24) has restored the UW-Oshkosh women's basketball winning tradition in short order. In June 2012, Fischer inherited a program that had won 11 WIAC championships and one national title, but had no winning seasons and a 52-99 record from 2007-12. Fischer, who owns a 69-17 record in his first three seasons at UW-Oshkosh, guided the Titans deep into the 2014 and 2015 NCAA Division III tournaments in just his second and third seasons and earned 2014 Central Region Coach of the Year from D3hoops.com. In the 2014-15 season, Fischer's Titans owned a 23-7 overall record and an 11-5 mark in the WIAC. UW-Oshkosh advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III C


THE ROAD TO 400 WINS: Mark Thomas' first collegiate win came the second game of his first season when his Blue Devils, which had won only two games over the previous two years, defeated Mt. Senario, 73-44, in November, 1987. The wins came more often after that. Thomas got his 50th win, Feb. 28, 1991, 71-60, over Cardinal Stritch. The 100th win came Jan. 10, 1994, an 80-59 win over UM-Morris. No. 200 came at UW-River Falls, a 78-74 victory on Jan. 5, 2000. Thomas' 300th win came in overtime, a 76-68 decision over UW-Stevens Point, Jan. 29, 2005. Thomas' 400th win came at UW-Stevens Point, a 90-76 decision, Feb. 3, 2010.

CONFERENCES: UW-Stout is a member of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-Eau Claire. UW-Oshkosh, UW-La Crosse, UW-Stevens Point, UW- Platteville, UW-River Falls, and UW-Whitewater.
