A LOOK AT UW-STOUT:
- A balanced attack is how to describe the Blue Devils offense. Stout is the only team in the WIAC that has four players averaging in double digits. Four of the five starters - Kyncaide Diedrich (13.7 ppg), Jenna Goldsmith (12.4), Bailey Diersen (11.4), and Anna Brown (10.3) - are all averaging more than 10 points per contest.
- As a team, Stout ranks third in the lead in points scored with 66.6.Â
- Goldsmith leads the team in rebounds with 7.1, followed by Diedrich with 6.2.
- Goldsmith is third in the WIAC in blocked shots (1.7).Â
- Diedrich is first in the league in assists, averaging 3.4.
- Goldsmith has scored in double digits in all seven conference games this year. Goldsmith tops the league in free throw percent (.881), draining 37-of-42.Â

STEPPING UP IN CONFERENCE PLAY:
- Jenna Goldsmith has scored in double digits in all seven conference games so far and was the Blue Devils' leading scorer in two of the three two games, scoring 22 points in a 74-68 loss to UW-Eau Claire, Jan. 18, and 19 points in a 73-63 loss at UW-Whitewater, Jan. 21.
- Goldsmith had four blocked shots and eight rebounds against Eau Claire and one blocked shot and nine rebounds against Whitewater. Goldsmith was 10-20 from the floor against the Blugolds and 8-17 against the Warhawks.
- Goldsmith is currently averaging 12.4 points and 7.1 rebounds, but in conference play only, she is averaging 15.0 points.
CONFERENCE STANDINGS:
- The Blue Devils are projected to finish sixth in the WIAC. Last season, the Blue Devils were the highest scoring offense in the WIAC, averaging 69.4 points per game. They also were second in the WIAC in rebounds per game, with 41.2 per game.
STOUT LAST TIME OUT:
- UW-Stout came back from a 24-point deficit to bring the game to within one point, but fell in the final seconds to WIAC rival River Falls.
- Four Blue Devils scored in double-digits, Kyncaide Diedrich led the way once again with 19 points.
- Stout found themselves in an early hole after the first quarter, down 19-10 at the end of the first quarter, and in an even bigger hole midway through the second as River Falls stretched out a 24-point lead. Diedrich drilled a wide open three pointer, assisted by Bailey Diersen, to start the Blue Devil comeback. The Blue Devils got as close as 10 points in the third quarter, then used a series of River Falls turnovers to get as close as one point with 44 seconds remaining, but could never find that go ahead bucket.
- Diersen added 15 points. Anna Brown and Jenna Goldsmith scored 14 each.
- Story and Box Score
- UW-Stout rallied from a 20-17 deficit at the end of the first quarter deficit and led or was tied for much of the game through the third quarter. But 20th ranked UW-Whitewater outscored the young Blue Devils 23-9 in the fourth quarter to escape with a 74-63 win Saturday at Kachel Gym.
- The game was tied for the 13th time at 54-54 with 8:36 left in the fourth when Whitewater went on a 12-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 66-54 lead at 5:24.The Blue Devils had three players score in double figures.
- Jenna Goldsmith led the way with 19 points, and was just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds. Bailey Diersen tossed in 17 points and Kyncaide Diedrich added 12 points.Â

SCOUTING UW-RIVER FALLS
- River Falls sits at 5-12, the same record as the Blue Devils, but is 0-6 in conference play thus far.
- Taylor Karge, the Falcons' leading scorer, has two 20-point games this season. First against Bethel (23) and then against Platteville (21).
- It's been a rough conference season so far this year for the Falcons. A year after winning the regular season WIAC title at 12-2, the Falcons are still looking for their first conference win. Injury has sidelined Brynn Liljander, last season's second leading scorer and first team all-conference pick, to the bench since the fifth game of the season.
- Taylor Karge, who was last year's leading scorer and was also a first team all-conference player, returns and is the team's leading scorer with 13.1 points. Karges is also puling down a team best 5.1 points. Karge, Taylor Paulsrud and Katie Messman have started all 17 games and Katie Theisen has started 16 games. Paulsrud is averaging 9.2 points and Messman 7.2 points. Both have dropped in 24 3-pointers, tops on the team. Theisen is averaging 7.2 points.
- River Falls is second in the conference in field goal percentage (.400 / 399-997), but are being out-shot at the free throw line by an average of almost six points per night and opponents are making just over one more 3-pointer per evening. The Falcons are being outscored 64.2-61.9.
- The Falcons are looking to snap a nine game losing streak.

FALCONS LAST TIME OUT
- The Falcons lost to the Oshkosh Titans in their last contest, 65-55
- They trailed by no less than four points at the end of each quarter, as they attempted the upset bid, but could not get a lead.
- Taylor Karge scored a game-high 19 points, 14 in the first hal. The Falcons did not outscore the Titans in any quarter, but kept pace throughout most of the game scoring no less than four points less than the Titans in each quarter. Taylor Paulsrud added 10 points for the Falcons.

LAST YEAR WHEN STOUT AND RIVER FALLSÂ MET
- Stout fell to the eventual 2016 WIAC runner-up last season twice last season, with the Falcons taking an 86-76 win in Menomonie in January, then notching the sweep with an 82-66 win in River Falls..
- In the first game, Jenna Goldsmith finished with 25 points in only 29 minutes. Taylor Karge dropped in 24 for River Falls.

- Fueled by Sarah Schoch's 13 first half points, UW-Stout pulled to within a point late in the second quarter, but the Blue Devils could not hold off a UW-River Falls surge and the Falcons captured an 82-66 win.
- the Falcons' Kate Theisen led all scorers with 22 points as the Falcons had five in double digits.

- The teams are scheduled to meet again in River Falls on Feb. 8 at 7 p.m.
SCOUTING UW-PLATTEVILLE
- The Pioneers rebounded from their conference opening loss to Stout with a 62-61 nail-biter over UW-River Falls. Eleven days later, Platteville upended UW-Stevens Point, 67-63 in Stevens Point.
- Morgan Hostman is third in the WIAC in scoring with 14.0 points.
- Allison Prestegaard tops the league in blocked shots with 3.9 per contest and is fourth in the country. She is eighth in the league in rebounds (.6.4). Five times this year, Prestegaard has pulled down 10 or more rebounds.
- Platteville averages 67.0 points per game and gives up 70.8.
- Their best win of the season came as a nail biter against River Falls in which they won 62-61 and held the Falcons to 28 percent shooting.
- Allison Prestegaard had almost a triple-double in the game, scoring 18 points, grabbing 15 rebounds, and blocking seven shots.
- Prestegaard, the tallest player in the league, has a good-size lead in the WIAC in blocked shots, averaging 3.88 per contest.

PIONEERS LAST TIME OUT
- Sophomore guard Morgan Horstman scored a team-high 12 points to lead a balanced attack Wednesday night, but the UW–Platteville women's basketball team couldn't overcome a step-up effort by UW-Eau Claire's Kayla Hanley, who came into the game averaging seven points, but exploded for seven first half 3-pointers and finished with 28 points.
- Allison Prestegaard posted nine points, five rebounds and five blocks for the Pioneers. Blaire Lutes also finished with nine points and three rebounds. Morgan Hartman had a nice all-around game with eight points, six rebounds and four assists. Lexis Macomber chipped in seven points and seven boards in 18 minutes off the bench.

- The Pioneers fell to the La Crosse Eagles at home last Saturday.
- Platteville outscored La Crosse 36-30 in the second half, but still game up short 71-56.
- Sophomore point guard Morgan Horstman scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds to lead the Pioneers in defeat.

LAST TIME STOUT AND PLATTEVILLE MET
- Stout took the first game of the conference season against the Pioneers in Platteville, 72-59.
- Kyncaide Diedrich scored UW-Stout's first double-double of the season, scoring 17 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Diedrich was only 3-of-15 from the field, with one 3-pointer, but made the Pioneers pay at the free throw line where she drained 10-of-11 charity shots. Diedrich was also opportunistic off the glass, pulling down 10 rebounds. Diedrich dished off seven assists, flirting with a triple double.
- Jenna Goldsmith added 12 points and Becky Fesenmaier chipped in nine for the Blue Devils. Carolyn Feddema led Stout with nine rebounds.
- The Pioneers were led by Morgan Horstman with 14 points, Morgan Hartman had 13 points and Allison Prestegaard finished with 12 point.

JOINING THE MIAC?: For the second year in a row, the Blue Devils will see considerable action with the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). Stout opens the season with five straight MIAC opponents - Augsburg College, St. Mary's University, the College of St. Benedict, Hamline University, St. Catherine University and Gustavus Adolphus College before finishing up the MIAC schedule with Bethel University and the Carleton College at the Just A Game Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells the end of December. Stout played six of the same teams last year, and added a pair of MIAC schools to the schedule to bring that total up to eight. - that's three-quarters of the 12 MIAC women's basketball teams.

THE COACHES:
UW-STOUT: Mark Thomas (465-323) is in his 30th year as the coach of the Blue Devils. Thomas has led his teams to 10 national playoff berths, nine times in the NCAA. A six-time WIAC coach of the year, the Blue Devils have won five conference titles and four conference tournament championships under Thomas' tutelage. His teams have twice been to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. Thomas is the first WIAC coach to have reached 400 career wins. Thomas also has the most wins of any Stout basketball coach, either men's or women's. Dwain Mintz coached the men's basketball program for 27 years and compiled a 385-280 record. .
UW-RIVER FALLS:
Cindy Holbrook is in her 17th season as the head coach of the Falcons. Holbrook is the only person to have to earned WIAC player of the year and WIAC coach of the year. Holbrook played at UW-Stout and was a two-time All-WIAC first team selection and an All-American. Holbrook was inducted into the UW-Stout Hall of Fame in 2005. The Falcons won the regular season WIAC title last season.
UW-PLATTEVILLE: Megan Wilson, (58-112) a member of two Wisconsin high school championship teams and an NCAA Division III national championship squad, is in her fifth season as the head women's basketball coach at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Wilson led the Pioneers to two of their best back-to-back seasons in school history in 2013-14 and 2014-15.Â
THE ROAD TO 400 WINS:
Mark Thomas' first collegiate win came the second game of his first season when his Blue Devils, which had won only two games over the previous two years, defeated Mt. Senario, 73-44, in November, 1987. The wins came more often after that. Thomas got his 50th win, Feb. 28, 1991, 71-60, over Cardinal Stritch. The 100th win came Jan. 10, 1994, an 80-59 win over UM-Morris. No. 200 came at UW-River Falls, a 78-74 victory on Jan. 5, 2000. Thomas' 300th win came in overtime, a 76-68 decision over UW-Stevens Point, Jan. 29, 2005. Thomas' 400th win came at UW-Stevens Point, a 90-76 decision, Feb. 3, 2010.
STOUT IN THE WIAC TOURNAMENT: Overall, UW-Stout is 19-10 in the WIAC Championship tournament. Stout is 11-3 in the first round, 4-7 in the semi-finals and 4-0 in the finals. The Pointers hold a 3-2 lead when the teams have met in the tournament. The Pointers have won the last two tournament meetings, an 82-74 win in 2009-10 and a 76-64 win during the 2008-09 season. |
