A LOOK AT UW-STOUT: Kyncaide Diedrich,
Jenna Goldsmith, and
Bailey Diersen, are all averaging more than 10 points per contest. Diedrich leads the Blue Devils with 13.7 points, followed by Goldsmith with 11.2 points and Diersen with 10.8. Diedrich ranks fourth, Goldsmith 13th and Diersen 14th in the WIAC.
Anna Brown, who is averaging 8.3 points, is 21st. Brown leads the team in shooting percentage, knocking down 45-of-94 shots (.479) to rank sixth in the WIAC. Goldsmith leads the team in rebounds with 6.7, followed by Diedrich with 6.4. Goldsmith is fifth in the league in rebounds and Diedrich is ranked seventh. Goldsmith is third in blocked shots (1.67). Diedrich is second in the league in assists, averaging 3.00, As a team, Stout is fourth in the WIAC in scoring at 66.7 and is giving up 69.0. |
2016-17 Statistics
CONFERENCE STANDINGS: The Blue Devils are projected to finish sixth in the WIAC. Last season, the Blue Devils were the highest scoring offense in the WIAC, averaging 69.4 points per game. They also were second in the WIAC in rebounds per game, with 41.2 per game. The Blue Devils look to improve on these even more this season and will look to their six returners to take them there.
STOUT LAST TIME OUT: UW-La Crosse went on a 12-2 run over the last five minutes of the first quarter, to erase a 10-7 UW-Stout lead and the Eagles downed the Blue Devils 64-52 Saturday at Mitchell Hall. The Eagles took a 19-12 lead at the end of the first quarter and built that to a 33-23 halftime lead. The Eagles had a double digit lead for almost all of the second half. Both teams had three played in double figures, with the Eagles' Taylor Nelson and Daleney Schoenenberger leading the way with 15 points. MaKenzie Miller notched a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. The Blue Devils were led by

SCOUTING UW-EAU CLAIRE
- The Blugolds are coming off a 14-12 overall season and finished the conference at 8-6, finishing fifth in the league. The Blugolds were picked to finish fifth in a WIAC preseason poll. The Blugolds came into the conference schedule with a 6-5 record, which included a three-game winning streak in November over St. Olaf, St. Norbert and Edgewood College. Eau Claire native Anna Grasskamp, a freshman, is the team's leading scorer (12.8), and rebounder (7.2), ranking seventh in the league in scoring and second in rebounds.

BLUGOLDS LAST TIME OUT
- UW-Eau Claire lost at 13th ranked UW-Oshkosh, 77-65, Saturday. Eau Claire came out shooting the long-ball early to take a very early lead, but the Titans held a 20-12 lead with two minutes remaining in the first quarter and never trailed the rest of the way. The Titans jumped out to as much as a 49-31 lead in the third quarter before pulled to within 11 points, 60-49, at the end of the quarter. Eau Claire would not get the deficit under 10 points the rest of the way. The Blugolds' bench paced the offense as a total of 36 points came from the bench. Bree Meier had a team-high 11 points and Jenni LaCroix and Kayla Hanley had 10 apiece. Maddie Dunathan finished with 10 points.

LAST YEAR WHEN STOUT AND EAU CLAIRE MET
- The Blugolds won both games last season, taking an 81-67 win in Menomonie, Jan. 13, then finishing the sweep with an 80-63 win in Eau Claire, Jan. 30.
- In the first contest, the Blugolds held a 39-23 halftime lead. Stout cut that lead to as little as 13 points. The Blugolds' Erin O'Toole had a monster game, tossing in 35 points, grabbing seven rebounds and blocking four shots. Shannan Watkins led Stout with 12 points.
- The script for the rematch was somewhat similar. The Blugolds built an early lead, but Stout did manage to cut into the lead, but O'Toole, like last time out, filled the basket, this time with 30 points. Teenie Lichtfuss added 17 points and Madison Johnson had 17 rebounds. Kyleigh Hebert scored a season-high 20 points to lead Stout.

SCOUTING UW-WHITEWATER
- After losing three starters from last year's squad, the Warhawks have put together a fine looking season so far, with the team's only loss coming at Augustana College, Dec. 20, 86-78.
- Brooke Trewyn lead the Warhawks - and the WIAC - in scoring with 15.3 points, followed by Malia Smith at 13.0 and Reilly Stewart coming off the bench for 10.4. The Warhawks lead the league in scoring with 70.5 points per contest. The Warhawks defense allows 57.3 points - only UW-Oshkosh allows fewer points.
- Andrea Meinert, who averages 9.7 points, leads the team in rebounds with 6.2. Trewyn is averaging 6.1 rebounds.

THE WARHAWKS LAST TIME OUT
- Brooke Trewyn matched a career-high with 28 points in the Warhawks defeated UW-Platteville, 77-72, in Platteville Saturday. The Warhawks outscored the Pioneers 28-16 in the third period to erase a halftime deficit.

LAST YEAR WHEN STOUT AND WHITEWATER MET
- The Warhawks captured both games last year, winning 72-60 in Whitewater in January and 66-55 in Menomonie in February.
- UW-Whitewater used a 12-0 run midway through the third period to put some separation between themselves and UW-Stout and went on to a 72-60 win Wednesday at Kachel Gymnasium in a WIAC opener for both teams. Stout's Kyleigh Hebert led all scorers with 15 points, going 6-of-7 from the field. Bailey Diersen came off the bench to score 12 points. The Warhawks had four players in double figures, led by Lisa Palmer's 14. Maddie Bare finished with 12. Malia Smith chipped in 11 points and Andrea Meinert tossed in 10 points.

- In a game you could describe as a chess match, was downed by No. 19 Whitewater on Alumni Day. The Blue Devils made a late game push to get to as close as nine points, but they fell to the Warhawks 66-55. Sarah Schoch led the Blue Devils with 14 points, three rebounds and one assist.

JOINING THE MIAC?: For the second year in a row, the Blue Devils will see considerable action with the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). Stout opens the season with five straight MIAC opponents - Augsburg College, St. Mary's University, the College of St. Benedict, Hamline University, St. Catherine University and Gustavus Adolphus College before finishing up the MIAC schedule with Bethel University and the Carleton College at the Just A Game Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells the end of December. Stout played six of the same teams last year, and added a pair of MIAC schools to the schedule to bring that total up to eight. - that's three-quarters of the 12 MIAC women's basketball teams.

THE COACHES:
UW-STOUT: Mark Thomas (463-320) is in his 30th year as the coach of the Blue Devils. Thomas has led his teams to 10 national playoff berths, nine times in the NCAA. A six-time WIAC coach of the year, the Blue Devils have won five conference titles and four conference tournament championships under Thomas' tutelage. His teams have twice been to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. Thomas is the first WIAC coach to have reached 400 career wins. Thomas also has the most wins of any Stout basketball coach, either men's or women's. Dwain Mintz coached the men's basketball program for 27 years and compiled a 385-280 record. .
UW-EAU CLAIRE:
Tonja Englund (291-166) enters her 17th season as head women's basketball coach at Eau Claire. Coming into the 2016-2017 season Englund's 284 wins ranks fourth most in WIAC history. In 2015-16 Englund became UW-Eau Claire's winningest women's basketball coach. Englund has four WIAC Championships under her belt (2001,2003,2008,2012) as well as five NCAA tournament appearances.
UW-WHITEWATER: It seems like only yesterday when
Keri Carollo (278-129) was an assistant coach at UW-Stout, but Carollo is in the midst of her 15th season at Whitewater. Carollo guided the Warhawks to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division III Tournament semifinals in 2013 and 2014. UW-Whitewater finished as national runner-up in 2013 and in third place in 2014 to earn two of the four highest national finishes in program history. Carollo also led the team to a third-place finish in 2008, when the program made its first of seven consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Carollo was an assistant coach at Stout from 1999-2002.
THE ROAD TO 400 WINS:
Mark Thomas' first collegiate win came the second game of his first season when his Blue Devils, which had won only two games over the previous two years, defeated Mt. Senario, 73-44, in November, 1987. The wins came more often after that. Thomas got his 50th win, Feb. 28, 1991, 71-60, over Cardinal Stritch. The 100th win came Jan. 10, 1994, an 80-59 win over UM-Morris. No. 200 came at UW-River Falls, a 78-74 victory on Jan. 5, 2000. Thomas' 300th win came in overtime, a 76-68 decision over UW-Stevens Point, Jan. 29, 2005. Thomas' 400th win came at UW-Stevens Point, a 90-76 decision, Feb. 3, 2010.
STOUT IN THE WIAC TOURNAMENT: Overall, UW-Stout is 19-10 in the WIAC Championship tournament. Stout is 11-3 in the first round, 4-7 in the semi-finals and 4-0 in the finals. The Pointers hold a 3-2 lead when the teams have met in the tournament. The Pointers have won the last two tournament meetings, an 82-74 win in 2009-10 and a 76-64 win during the 2008-09 season. |
