Baseball Preview: Stout to host WIAC first place UW-La Crosse

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (11-13, 3-5 WIAC) return to conference play by hosting first place UW-La Crosse (18-5, 8-0 WIAC), Saturday, April 23 and Sunday, April 24. Both teams played St. Thomas this week, with the Tommies downing the Blue Devils, 2-0, 6-1, on Tuesday. The Tommies hosted the Eagles Wednesday, with both teams snapping a winning streak. The Eagles won the first game, 14-6, to break a Tommie winning streak at 12 games. The Tommies returned the favor with an 8-4 second game win, ending a La Crosse winning streak at nine games. The Blue Devils split a pair of games at Northland College Wednesday, dropping the first game, 4-2, but winning the second contest, 6-0.

SENIOR DAY: The Blue Devils will recognize their 10 seniors on Saturday. Brady Burzynski, Josh Halling, Austin Littmann, Tyler Kinderman, Jake Johnson, Kellen Pearson, Patrick Gullickson, Cole Wynveen, Nick Garlick,  and Hayden Bowe.


THE 2016 BLUE DEVILS: The Blue Devils return 11 pitchers from last year's squad and return all five pitchers who started five or more games. The pitching staff returning accounts for 307 of 324 total innings pitched last year. In the field, the Blue Devils return infielder Noah Brown, who plays at both first base and third base, as well as Austin Littmann, who has played predominately at second base. Tyler Nalbach has seen time at middle infield and Taryn Tierney has held down third base. Clay Gale and Tyler Kinderman are expected to share time at catcher. In the outfield, Brady Burzynski returns to center field, but an injury during the spring break trip may keep him out for an extended time. Josh Halling returns after seeing his 2015 season shortened due to illness. Hunter Dicus and Ryan Connor saw considerable time in the outfield. | 2015 Statistics

PITCHING STAFF: Brett Steinwagner has made five appearances in relief, allowing only one hit and one earned run for an ERA of 1.93. Zach Carlson has thrown a team-high 25.0 innings and leads the team in strikeouts with 17. Derek Graves has thrown 20 innings and has 13 strikeouts, as does Hayden Bowe, who just came off the injured list. Bowe, a first team all-WIAC selection last season, is 2-0 with an ERA of 3.68. Kellen Pearson, who threw 11 innings Saturday, has a 2-2 record in four starts and currently has an ERA of. 4.98. Pearson was the WIAC pitcher of the week for his performance last week against UW-Stevens Point. Max Sires took a hard-luck loss to St. Thomas earlier this week, going the full seven innings and allowing no earned runs. Sires has an ERA of 2.12 over 17.0 innings pitched. Drew Worth recorded the win Wednesday against Northland College, throwing five innings of scoreless ball, allowing only two hits. Wyatt Ernstmeyer has come on in relief in four games, striking out nine over 6.1 innings pitched with an ERA of 2.84.

HITTING THE BALL: Noah Brown continues a solid season at the plate, and is posting a team-best batting average of .417 (40-96) with a team-high 19 RBI. Brown's batting average has hovered above .400 for most of the season, with only the occasional dip below the hallowed mark. Brown leads the team or is tied for the team lead in doubles (7), triples (2) and home runs (2). Brady Burzynski has an average of .378 (17-45), playing so far in 12 games because of an early season injury. Hunter Dicus has an average of .353 (24-68) with 13 rBI. THIEVERY: An injury to Brady Burzynski in March slowed Burzynski's pace to become the UW-Stout all-time stolen base leader. Burzynski came into the 2016 season with 37 stolen bases, sixth on the all-time Blue Devil career list. Burzynski has stolen two bases, with one of those coming in Florida before the injury and the other coming against UW-Stevens Point last weekend, to give him 39 and still sixth. The Blue Devil stolen base leaders are: Tate Cummins 44 (1997-99); Brad O'Connell 43 (1998-2001); Mike Niemczyk 43 (1990-94); Tim Buswell 41 (1986-88); JR Dachel 40 (1997-2000).

UW-STOUT LAST TIME OUT: Drew Worth and Wyatt Ernstmeyer combined to allow three hits as UW-Stout bounced back from a series opening loss to down Northland College 6-0 in the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday. The Lumberjacks won the opener, 4-2. Worth went five innings, scattered two hits and struck out nine to take the win. Ernstmeyer worked the final two innings in relief, striking out three. Stout struck early in the second game, Josh Halling hit a one-out, solo home run in the top of the first. Noah Brown singled and Hunter Dicus drove him home with a double. Stout added two runs in the third inning. Brown led off the frame with a single. Following a pair of flyouts, Brown scored after Jake Johnson's single was misplayed and Johnson eventually scored on the play. Stout added a single run in the fifth inning on Johnson's sacrifice fly, then added another run in the sixth when Austin Littmann doubled, then scored on an error by the Lumberjacks. Brown was 3-for-4 and scored three runs. Dicus was 2-for-4 with an RBI. In the opener, both teams scored in the first inning, Stout when Tyler Nalbach's sacrifice fly plated Brady Burzynski. The Lumberjacks scored an unearned run in the bottom of the stanza. Stout took a one run lead in the fourth inning when Josh Halling scored on Clay Gale's sacrifice bunt. The Lumberjacks took the lead with a two-run home run by Feele in the fifth, then added a run in the sixth. Brown and designated hitter Derek Graves were 2-for-4. UW-LA CROSSE BASEBALL: The Eagles are currently in first place in the WIAC and are ranked 11th in the April 19 ABCA poll. Coming into the week, the Eagles' Taylor Kohlwey was leading all of Division III with a batting average of .545. He has dipped slightly to .536 (52-97) with 11 doubles, five triples and 35 RBI. Justin Anderson leads the WIAC in RBI with 40, posting a batting average of .474 (45-95). Alex Cordova has an average of .442 (42-95) with 25 RBI. The Eagles have nine players who have driven in at least 12 runs. The Eagles lead the country in batting average (.385) and are second in runs scored, averaging 9.8 runs per contest. The Eagles have exceeded 10 runs in 13 games. Caleb Boushley leads the WIAC in innings pitched at 43.2,starting six games with a record of 4-0 and an ERA of 1.03 and 44 strikeouts. Jameson Lavery is 4-0 with an ERA of 2.73 and 33 strikeouts. Troy Kenkel has started a team-high seven games and has 34 strikeouts with an ERA of. 3.63. | 2016 Statistics

LAST TIME OUT: La Crosse split a non-conference doubleheader at the University of St. Thomas Wednesday afternoon at Koch Diamond. The doubleheader featured a pair of nationally-ranked teams. The Eagles, ranked ninth on this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll, won the opener, 14-6, while the Tommies, ranked 10th, took the nightcap, 8-4. 2016 TEAM CAPTAINS: Team captains for the 2016 season are Brady Burzynski, Hayden Bowe, Patrick Gullickson and Austin Littmann.

AWARDS AND HONORS: Brady Burzynski was selected as the most valuable player for the Eau Claire Express last summer. The Express play in the Northwoods League, a circuit made up of predominately Division I players...Hayden Bowe was a first team all-WIAC pick last season at pitcher...Brady Burzynski and Zach Carlson were first team all-WIAC selections in 2014.

COACHES: Toby Gardenhire, (77-105) is in his fifth season with UW-Stout. Gardenhire coached the Blue Devils to a 17-22 record in 2015. In the fall, 2013, Gardenhire played for Germany in the World Baseball Classic. Gardenhire received his bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois in community health in 2005. . UW-La Crosse: Chris Schwarz begins his 12th season as head baseball coach at UW-La Crosse. Along with his coaching duties, Schwarz serves as the director of UW-L's camps and clinics. He led the Eagles to their first ever appearance in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III World Series in 2015 as UW-L placed second overall. UW-L advanced to the championship series in Appleton, Wisconsin after defeating 15th-ranked Trinity University (Texas). The Eagles also defeated fifth-ranked Salisbury University (Md.) and Emory University (Ga.) in the championship.
