THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (2-4, 0-0 WIAC) will look to get back on the winning track when they return home to face
UW-Superior (3-3, 2-0 UMAC), Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. The game with the Yellowjackets starts a three-game homestand for the Blue Devils. Stout will host the
University of Dubuque (3-4, 1-1 IIAC), Saturday, Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. and Gustavus Adolphus College (6-1 1-0 MIAC), Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. The Saturday game with Dubuque will be a "Play for Pat", the Pat being Pat Summitt, the former Tennessee women's basketball coach who passed away this summer due to complications from Alzheimer's. The Blue Devils and Spartans will raise funds for the Pat Summitt Foundation.

A LOOK AT UW-STOUT: Kyncaide Diedrich and
Bailey Diersen are leading the Blue Devils this season. Diedrich is the leading scorer for Stout, averaging 16.2 points per contest, while Diersen is the second leading scorer with 12.8 points per game. Diedrich has scored in double figures in four os five games this season.
Jenna Goldsmith is Stout's defensive and rebounding anchor, with six blocks on the season and more than eight rebounds per game. The 5-foot-5 Diedrich also gets in on the rebounding action, averaging 6.8 rebounds, and totaling 15 of those rebounds on the offensive end. Shannon Watkins is the playmaker on the squad, tallying 25 assists (5.0 per game) and also finds the scoresheet with 8.2 points per game. Stout's high-flying offense looks to propel them into the tough WIAC part of their schedule in the beginning of January. |
2016-17 Statistics
CONFERENCE STANDINGS: The Blue Devils are projected to finish sixth in the WIAC. Last season, the Blue Devils were the highest scoring offense in the WIAC, averaging 69.4 points per game. They also were second in the WIAC in rebounds per game, with 41.2 per game. The Blue Devils look to improve on these even more this season and will look to their six returners to take them there.
STOUT LAST TIME OUT: The Blue Devils lost a shootout at Northland College, 94-90, Nov. 29. The Blue Devils held the lead for only a very short time as the Lumberjills won their first game of the season by hitting better than 50 percent of their shots from the field.

SCOUTING UW-SUPERIOR: The Yellowjackets are 3-3 on the season, winning their last two games to carry a winning streak into Tuesday's game. Hailey Kontny is the team's leading scorer (13.7 ppg) and second leading rebounder (4.3 rpg) behind Hannah Norlin, who averages 6.3 rebounds per game and scores 11.8 points. Bailee Bartunek is pulling down a team-high 6.8 rebounds. Besides these three, the Yellowjackets score as a committee. having 13 players who score under 10 points per contest. They also have 96 assists on 150 field goals this season, out-assisting their opponents by 19. The Yellowjackets come out of the gate hard, outscoring their opponents, by a nearly 2 to 1 margin, 18.7-9.8, in the first period. YELLOWJACKETS LAST TIME OUT: Superior handled North Central University on Saturday to get their second UMAC win of the season. Three players scored in double-digits, but no player played more than 17 minutes in the game on the way to the 87-41 rout. Junior guard Brittany Laehn had a team-high 14 points, while junior forward Bailee Bartunek had 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds. LAST TIME STOUT AND SUPERIOR MET: The two teams last met on Feb. 18, 2015, in Menomonie in which Stout took the 67-58 loss. This was the last contest that Stout and Superior would have as WIAC opponents. Then in her freshman season, Jenna Goldsmith was Stout's leading scorer with 16, along with senior Katelynne Folkers, who scored 13. SCOUTING UNIVERSITY OF DUBUQUE: Later in the week, Stout will face a 3-4 team in the Dubuque Spartans. The Spartans look to repeat as IIAC champions this season, but will have a tough time doing it. The Spartans are led by two Stout grads head coach Mark Noll and assistant coach Kelsey Steinhagen, but on the floor are led by Abbey Meyer, who averages 16.5 points per game. The Spartans are somewhat of a three headed beast, having three starters score in double digits. They boast a big team, having five players over six feet. | Statistics

LAST TIME STOUT AND DUBUQUE MET: Stout suffered a three-point loss last time they met Dubuque. On the road the Blue Devils fell 79-76 after a Dubuqe fourth quarter rally. Stout had four players in double digits, including now coach Kylie Hebert, who scored 17 to lead the Blue Devils. | Story and Statistics
JOINING THE MIAC?: For the second year in a row, the Blue Devils will see considerable action with the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). Stout opens the season with five straight MIAC opponents - Augsburg College, St. Mary's University, the College of St. Benedict, Hamline University and St. Catherine University, before finishing up the MIAC schedule with Gustavus Adophus. Stout played the same teams last year - that's half of the 12 MIAC women's basketball teams.

THE COACHES: UW-Stout: Mark Thomas (460-314) is in his 30th year as the coach of the Blue Devils. Thomas has led his teams to 10 national playoff berths, nine times in the NCAA. A six-time WIAC coach of the year, the Blue Devils have won five conference titles and four conference tournament championships under Thomas' tutelage. His teams have twice been to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. Thomas is the first WIAC coach to have reached 400 career wins. Thomas also has the most wins of any Stout basketball coach, either men's or women's. Dwain Mintz coached the men's basketball program for 27 years and compiled a 385-280 record.
UW-Superior: Donald Mulhern is entering his 29th season as a college basketball coach and his 11th season at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. During his coaching tenure, he has systematically taken his respective programs and moved each of them in a positive direction. This has never been more evident than the last five seasons of Yellowjacket women's basketball. Last season Mulhern helped guide the Yellowjackets to a 24-4 season, including a perfect 16-0 record in UMAC play. The Yellowjackets won the UMAC regular season championship and then coasted through the post-season en route to the UMAC playoff championship. With the playoff win the Yellowjackets qualified for the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history. Mulhern was named UMAC Women's Basketball Coach of the Year.;
University of Dubuque: Mark Noll is entering his eighth season as UD Head Women's Basketball Coach after earning the position on May 1, 2007. Noll, a native of Colfax, Wis. is a 2000 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie, Wis., where he also served as the assistant women's basketball coach for seven seasons. Noll has 18 years of coaching experience at all levels including collegiate, AAU and youth levels. Noll guided the Spartans to their first-ever regular season Iowa Conference title in 2014-15 and the Spartans seventh IIAC Tournament bid in his first eight seasons as head coach. The Spartans set a school record for most Iowa Conference wins in school history (11) this season (2014-15) and set the overall wins school record (20) in 2012-13 season. The fast and furious style of play the Spartans employed led to several school records in 26 games during 2013-14 including: points (1990), FG attempted (1793), FT attempted (623), and points per game (76.5). Former UW-Stout All-American Kelsey (Duoss) Steinhagen is an assistant coach for the Spartans.
THE ROAD TO 400 WINS:
Mark Thomas' first collegiate win came the second game of his first season when his Blue Devils, which had won only two games over the previous two years, defeated Mt. Senario, 73-44, in November, 1987. The wins came more often after that. Thomas got his 50th win, Feb. 28, 1991, 71-60, over Cardinal Stritch. The 100th win came Jan. 10, 1994, an 80-59 win over UM-Morris. No. 200 came at UW-River Falls, a 78-74 victory on Jan. 5, 2000. Thomas' 300th win came in overtime, a 76-68 decision over UW-Stevens Point, Jan. 29, 2005. Thomas' 400th win came at UW-Stevens Point, a 90-76 decision, Feb. 3, 2010.
STOUT IN THE WIAC TOURNAMENT: Overall, UW-Stout is 19-10 in the WIAC Championship tournament. Stout is 11-3 in the first round, 4-7 in the semi-finals and 4-0 in the finals. The Pointers hold a 3-2 lead when the teams have met in the tournament. The Pointers have won the last two tournament meetings, an 82-74 win in 2009-10 and a 76-64 win during the 2008-09 season. |
