WBB Preview: Blue Devils slide back into play at Dells

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (3-6, 0-0 WIAC) will play a couple of more MIAC teams when they play at the Just A Game Classic in Wisconsin Dells, meeting Bethel University (8-1, 4-0 MIAC), Thursday, Dec. 29 at 1 p.m. and Carleton College (1-7, 0-3 MIAC), Friday, Dec. 30 at 11 a.m.

WMEQ 880 Radio, with Pete Knutson, Jay Fahl or Jake Bostrom, will broadcast and provide a live audio stream of away conference games. Stout will provide Live Stats for all home games. A LOOK AT UW-STOUT:  Kyncaide Diedrich, Jenna Goldsmith, Bailey Diersen, Anna Brown and Shannah Watkins are all averaging more than 10 points per contest.  Diedrich leads the Blue Devils with 12.1 points, followed by Diersen with 11.9, Goldsmith 11.2, Brown 10.4 and Watkins 10.3. . Diedrich ranks sixth, Diersen 8th, Goldsmith 10th, Brown 13th and Watkins 14.  Stout is the only team to have five players rank in the top 15 in scoring in the WIAC. Brown, has started all nine games and leads the team in shooting percentage (.500), where she ranks sixth in the WIAC. Goldsmith leads the team in rebounds with 779 boards, followed by the 5-foot-5 Diedrich with 6.0. Goldsmith is second in the league in rebounds and third in blocked shots (2.0). Watkins is averaging 5.0 rebounds and leads the team and the WIAC in assists, averaging 4.4 per contest. Watkins is third in the WIAC in steals (2.0), and is second in the WIAC in assists/turnover ratio at 1.14. As a team, Stout is third in the WIAC in scoring  at 69.1 and is giving up 70.1. | 2016-17 Statistics

CONFERENCE STANDINGS: The Blue Devils are projected to finish sixth in the WIAC. Last season, the Blue Devils were the highest scoring offense in the WIAC, averaging 69.4 points per game. They also were second in the WIAC in rebounds per game, with 41.2 per game. The Blue Devils look to improve on these even more this season and will look to their six returners to take them there.

STOUT LAST TIME OUT: The Blue Devils lost to Gustavus Adolphus College, 69-58, Dec. 13. Despite shooting less than 25 percent in the first half, UW-Stout stayed in the game at the free throw line, but eventually succumbed to undefeated Gustavus Adolphus College, 69-58, Tuesday on Dewey Mintz Court in Johnson Fieldhouse. The Blue Devils made five field goals in the first half, including two 3-pointers, and made 11 free throws before halftime. Stout kept up their barrage from the line in the second half, finishing the game by making 26-of-35 free throws. Stout tied the game early in the fourth quarter at 43-43, but the Gusties went on a 12-2 run to take a 55-45 lead with 6:54 left. Stout closed the gap to seven a few times. The Blue Devils were led by Anna Brown's career-high 18 points. Brown was 10-12 from the free throw line. SCOUTING BETHEL UNIVERSITY: The Royals are led by three time all-conference selection Kallie Zimmerman, who is averaging 17.6 points and 8.3 rebounds. Zimmerman is second in the MIAC in scoring, second in blocked shots (1.33)  third in shooting percentage (.610) and fourth in rebounds. Bethel was picked to finish fifth in the MIAC after finishing last season at 16-10 overall, 12-6 in the MIAC. Taite Anderson gives the Royals a good one-two punch. Anderson is averaging 11.2 points and 8.1 rebounds. Anderson is not afraid to step outside on occasion, and has drained 9-of-17 3-point attempts. Her .529 long-range shooting average is third in the league. Abby Miller is averaging 9.6 points and Shanni Morse and Hannah Johnson are both averaging 8. 7 points.  Jasmine Bretoi is the team's 3-point leader, draining a team-best 18 for a 2.0 per game average. She scores 8.0 points per game. Bethel's only loss of the season came to Carthage College, Nov. 18, when they were tipped, 70-61, at the Wisconsin Lutheran Tournament, in one of two games Zimmermann did not play. ROYALS LAST TIME OUT:  Bethel defeated Macalester College Dec. 9  and pulled away with an 82-59 win. The win for the Royals (8-1, 4-0 MIAC) was their seventh consecutive win of the season as they remain unbeaten in MIAC play. Bethel came out strong in the first quarter, scoring 23 points while Macalester totaled just eight. The Royals kept pounding on the Scots throughout the second quarter, going into halftime leading the Scots 43-23. Macalester was able to oustcore the Royals in the third quarter, 19-17, but Bethel responded with a strong fourth quarter to put the finishing touches on the 23 point victory.  The Royals scored 22 points off of Macalester turnovers while the Scots scored only 12. Bethel also posted 19 second chance points to Macalester's 12. Kalli Zimmerman led the Royals with 22 total points and 11 rebounds while shooting a perfect 8-8 from the floor and a near perfect 6-7 at the free throw line. SCOUTING CARLETON COLLEGE: The Knights are coming off a 4-21 overall season and picked up only one MIAC win last season in finishing 1-17 in league play. The Knights have picked up only one win so far this season, that coming at the David Wells Classic in Claremont, Calif, when they downed Pomona-Pitzer, 76-68, Nov. 26. Carleton plays UW-Oshkosh the day before meeting the Blue Devils. Cece Leone leads the Knights with 10.6 points. Samantha Cooke is tossing in 10.1 points, and scored a season-high 26 points against Saint Mary's, Nov. 30. Sarah Waldfogel leads Carleton off the boards with a 7.0 average. KNIGHTS LAST TIME OUT: Cece Leone turned in a solid all-around game—finishing with a game-high 13 points, seven rebounds, four steals, and two blocks—but the Carleton College women's basketball team absorbed a 51-32 setback in a non-conference contest at Northwestern (Minn) Dec. 14. With the polar vortex weather pattern settled in over Minnesota, the offenses for both teams went cold inside the Ericksen Center as the squads combined to shoot 33-of-102 (32 percent) overall, including a frigid 4-of-30 (13.3 percent) showing from beyond the arc. | Game Story and Statistics

JOINING THE MIAC?: For the second year in a row, the Blue Devils will see considerable action with the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). Stout opens the season with five straight MIAC opponents - Augsburg College, St. Mary's University, the College of St. Benedict, Hamline University, St. Catherine University and Gustavus Adolphus College before finishing up the MIAC schedule with Bethel University and the Carleton College at the Just A Game Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells the end of December.  Stout played six of the same teams last year, and added a pair of MIAC schools to the schedule to bring that total up to eight. - that's three-quarters of the 12 MIAC women's basketball teams.

AWARDS AND HONORS: Shannan Watkins was the UW-Stout/DigiCopy Athlete of the Week, Dec. 12...Jenna Goldsmith was the WIAC athlete of the week, Dec. 6, after scoring a career-high 28 points in a 94-90 shootout loss to Northland College, Nov. 29...Kyncaide Diedrich selected to St. Benedict all-tournament team, Nov. 20...Jenna Goldsmith was an all-WIAC honorable mention selection and now assistant coach Kyleigh Hebert was a first team all-WIAC pick...Jenna Goldsmith was selected as the UW-Stout/Northwestern Mutual Athlete of the Week, Dec. 1, Jan. 4 and again Feb. 8....Jenna Goldsmith was a first team all-conference selection in 2014-15.

THE COACHES: UW-Stout: Mark Thomas (461-316) is in his 30th year as the coach of the Blue Devils. Thomas has led his teams to 10 national playoff berths, nine times in the NCAA. A six-time WIAC coach of the year, the Blue Devils have won five conference titles and four conference tournament championships under Thomas' tutelage. His teams have twice been to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. Thomas is the first WIAC coach to have reached 400 career wins. Thomas also has the most wins of any Stout basketball coach, either men's or women's. Dwain Mintz coached the men's basketball program for 27 years and compiled a 385-280 record. . BETHEL UNIVERSITY: Jon Herbrechtsmeyer has led the Bethel Royals women's basketball program to new heights in his tenure, something he has done at each institution he has coached at. In all three head coaching positions, including Bethel, he has led the women's basketball program to their first post-season appearance in program history.

CARLETON COLLEGE: Cassie (Glasrud) Kosiba '03 was tabbed the head coach at Carleton prior to the 2010-11 season. She returned to her alma mater after serving four years as an assistant coach at the NCAA Division I level, most recently spending two seasons as an assistant with the women's basketball program at Long Island University's (LIU) Brooklyn campus. She is the seventh coach in Carleton women's basketball history, taking over the reins of the program from Tammy Metcalf-Filzen, who retired after the 2009-10 campaign after registering a 226-122 ledger in 13 seasons.


THE ROAD TO 400 WINS: Mark Thomas' first collegiate win came the second game of his first season when his Blue Devils, which had won only two games over the previous two years, defeated Mt. Senario, 73-44, in November, 1987. The wins came more often after that. Thomas got his 50th win, Feb. 28, 1991, 71-60, over Cardinal Stritch. The 100th win came Jan. 10, 1994, an 80-59 win over UM-Morris. No. 200 came at UW-River Falls, a 78-74 victory on Jan. 5, 2000. Thomas' 300th win came in overtime, a 76-68 decision over UW-Stevens Point, Jan. 29, 2005. Thomas' 400th win came at UW-Stevens Point, a 90-76 decision, Feb. 3, 2010.

STOUT IN THE WIAC TOURNAMENT: Overall, UW-Stout is 19-10 in the WIAC Championship tournament. Stout is 11-3 in the first round, 4-7 in the semi-finals and 4-0 in the finals. The Pointers hold a 3-2 lead when the teams have met in the tournament. The Pointers have won the last two tournament meetings, an 82-74 win in 2009-10 and a 76-64 win during the 2008-09 season. | WIAC Tournament History

CONFERENCES: UW-Stout is a member of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-Eau Claire. UW-Oshkosh, UW-La Crosse, UW-Stevens Point, UW- Platteville, UW-River Falls, and UW-Whitewater.
