WBB Preview: Blue Devils host undefeated Gusties Tuesday

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (3-5, 0-0 WIAC) will close out the first semester of play when they host Gustavus Adolphus College (9-0, 4-0 MIAC), Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. The undefeated Gusties were receiving votes in last week's D3hoops.com Top 25 poll. The game marks the final game of the first semester. The Blue Devils will resume play Dec. 29-30 in Wisconsin Dells at the Just A Game Classic.

A LOOK AT UW-STOUT:  Kyncaide Diedrich, Jenna Goldsmith, Bailey Diersen and Shannah Watkins are all averaging more than 10 points per contest and Anna Brown is knocking on the double-digit door. Diedrich leads the Blue Devils with 12.6 points, followed by Goldsmith with 12.1, Diersen with 11.8 and Watkins with 10.8. Diedrich ranks fifth, Goldsmith seventh and Diersen 10thin the WIAC in scoring. Brown averages 9.5 points, has started all eight games and leads the team in shooting percentage (.508), where she ranks fifth. Goldsmith leads the team in rebounds with 7.9 boards, followed by the 5-foot-5 Diedrich with 6.3. Goldsmith is second in the league in rebounds and third in blocked shots (1.75). Watkins is averaging 4.9 rebounds and leads the team and the WIAC in assists, averaging 4.6 per contest. Watkins is fourth in the WIAC in steals (2.00). As a team, Stout is third in the WIAC in scoring  at 70.5 and is giving up 70.2. | 2016-17 Statistics

CONFERENCE STANDINGS: The Blue Devils are projected to finish sixth in the WIAC. Last season, the Blue Devils were the highest scoring offense in the WIAC, averaging 69.4 points per game. They also were second in the WIAC in rebounds per game, with 41.2 per game. The Blue Devils look to improve on these even more this season and will look to their six returners to take them there.

STOUT LAST TIME OUT: UW-Stout outscored the University of Dubuque, 12-0 over the final six minutes of the third period to take a 56-39 lead at the end of the third quarter at Dewey Mintz Court in Johnson Fieldhouse on their way to a 72-59 sin over the Spartans Saturday. It was a balanced attack to close out the third quarter that gave Stout the 17 point lead. Carolyn Feddemaand Shannan Watkins each scored three points in the run, while Kyncaide Diedrich, Bailey Diersen and Jenna Goldsmith each chipped in two points. The Blue Devils continued the run to start the fourth quarter as Watkins, Diersen and Anna Brown each dropped in a bucket to expand the lead to 23 points, 62-39. The closest Dubuque got the rest of the way was 13 points. Feddema scored 11 points In the first half and finished with a team-high and career-high14 points. Stout had four players in double figures, led by Feddema  Watkins contributed 12, and Anna Brown and Bailey Diersen each finished with 11 points. SCOUTING GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS COLLEGE: The Gusties come into Tuesday's game undefeated at 9-0. Having already taken on four MIAC opponents this season, they are rolling. In eight of their nine games, Gustavus has scored the first basket of the game and have used this early advantage to outscore opponents by nearly 25 points per contest. The Gusties are lead by Mikayla Miller and Miranda Rice, Miller leads the team in scoring (17.6) with Rice close behind (16.3) while Rice leads in rebounding (6.1) with Miller also close behind (3.9). One of Gustavus' strengths, besides their talent in Miller and Rice, is ball movement. The Gusties move the ball well, leading the MIAC in assists per game with 18.4. Gustavus was receiving votes in the Dec. 5 D3hoops.com Top 25 poll, but their undefeated record may move them into the Top 25 when the latest poll comes out Dec. 13. | Statistics

GUSTIES LAST TIME OUT: In their lowest scoring and tightest contest of the season, the Gusties defeated MIAC opponent St. Mary's 49-45 Saturday to stay unbeaten. Gustavus established its largest lead of the game with just over a minute remaining in the third quarter, taking a five-point lead after a layup from Miranda Rice. The Cardinals battled back in the fourth quarter and owned a five-point lead around the midway point of the final frame. In the final minutes, the Gusties regained the lead. Hannah Howard sank two free throws with under 30 seconds remaining to give the Black and Gold a two-possesion lead and a 49-45 final score. In a defensive battle, the largest lead of five points was held by Gustavus. LAST TIME STOUT AND GUSTAVUS MET: The two teams met in Gustavus Adolphus Tournament at the beginning of the 2015-16 campaign for the Blue Devils. Gustavus  outscored Stout by 11 points in the third quarter to take a big lead before the Blue Devils made a charge but couldn't get close enough and the Gusties downed Stout, 72-67 in the first game of the Gustavus Adolphus Classic Nov. 20, 2015. Kyncaide Diedrich and Jenna Goldsmith led the Blue Devils in scoring with 10 points apiece. The Gusties Mikayla Miller led all scorers with 23 points and Lindsey Johnson added 20. JOINING THE MIAC?: For the second year in a row, the Blue Devils will see considerable action with the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). Stout opens the season with five straight MIAC opponents - Augsburg College, St. Mary's University, the College of St. Benedict, Hamline University and St. Catherine University, before finishing up the MIAC schedule with Gustavus Adophus. Stout played the same teams last year - that's half of the 12 MIAC women's basketball teams.

AWARDS AND HONORS: Shannan Watkins was the UW-Stout/DigiCopy Athlete of the Week, Dec. 12...Jenna Goldsmith was the WIAC athlete of the week, Dec. 6, after scoring a career-high 28 points in a 94-90 shootout loss to Northland College, Nov. 29...Kyncaide Diedrich selected to St. Benedict all-tournament team, Nov. 20...Jenna Goldsmith was an all-WIAC honorable mention selection and now assistant coach Kyleigh Hebert was a first team all-WIAC pick...Jenna Goldsmith was selected as the UW-Stout/Northwestern Mutual Athlete of the Week, Dec. 1, Jan. 4 and again Feb. 8....Jenna Goldsmith was a first team all-conference selection in 2014-15.

THE COACHES: UW-Stout: Mark Thomas (461-315) is in his 30th year as the coach of the Blue Devils. Thomas has led his teams to 10 national playoff berths, nine times in the NCAA. A six-time WIAC coach of the year, the Blue Devils have won five conference titles and four conference tournament championships under Thomas' tutelage. His teams have twice been to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. Thomas is the first WIAC coach to have reached 400 career wins. Thomas also has the most wins of any Stout basketball coach, either men's or women's. Dwain Mintz coached the men's basketball program for 27 years and compiled a 385-280 record. . Gustavus Adolphus College: Laurie Kelly is in her fifth year with the Gusties.  Kelly, a 1993 graduate of the University of St. Thomas with a degree in speech communications, came to Gustavus from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, where she directed the Division I Lumberjacks for nine seasons. A Rochester, Minnesota, native, Kelly made a quick ascent through the Division II and I coaching ranks after record setting Division III playing career at the University of St. Thomas in the early `90s.  In the past nine years at Northern Arizona, she has compiled the most wins in the program's history (117), while also directing the team to its first-ever Big Sky Conference tournament title and NCAA tournament bid in the 2005-06 season.  During Kelly's tenure, the Lumberjacks advanced to the Big Sky tournament six times with two appearances in the championship game (2006, 2007), and her teams have registered two of the three 20-win seasons in the program's history.


THE ROAD TO 400 WINS: Mark Thomas' first collegiate win came the second game of his first season when his Blue Devils, which had won only two games over the previous two years, defeated Mt. Senario, 73-44, in November, 1987. The wins came more often after that. Thomas got his 50th win, Feb. 28, 1991, 71-60, over Cardinal Stritch. The 100th win came Jan. 10, 1994, an 80-59 win over UM-Morris. No. 200 came at UW-River Falls, a 78-74 victory on Jan. 5, 2000. Thomas' 300th win came in overtime, a 76-68 decision over UW-Stevens Point, Jan. 29, 2005. Thomas' 400th win came at UW-Stevens Point, a 90-76 decision, Feb. 3, 2010.

CONFERENCES: UW-Stout is a member of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-Eau Claire. UW-Oshkosh, UW-La Crosse, UW-Stevens Point, UW- Platteville, UW-River Falls, and UW-Whitewater.
