MADISON (November 8, 2016) - UW-Stout faced what looked like trees as they played in their first contest of the season in an exhibition against UW-Madison Tuesday.
The Blue Devil game plan was to run up tempo and try to catch the Badgers on their heals on defense. The Blue Devils went on a 9-2 run in the first quarter to bring the game within nine points, using their defense to force seven turnovers and make the Badgers take tough shots at the rim.
Shannon Watkins and
Kyncaide Diedrich provided buckets and free throws for Stout in the first half, Diedrich scored 13 of the Blue Devils' 26 points in the first half, shooting 4-of-6 and making 5-of-6 free throws.
The Badgers found themselves up 54-26 at halftime.
The Blue Devils saw even tougher defense in the third quarter, scoring their first points from the free throw line by
Jenna Goldsmith around the five minute mark. Kalley Hartman scored her first collegiate bucket on a nice mid-range jumpshot in which
Carolyn Feddema dropped her the ball on a baseline inbound.
Feddema later hit one of two free throws around the 1:30 mark in the third.
Diedrich was the spark of offense for the Blue Devils. She had 18 points and was the leading scorer for the Blue Devils.
The final buzzer ended with the Badgers on top 103-45.
The Blue Devils open the regular season Tuesday, Nov. 15 when they host Augsburg College at 7 p.m.
