WBB Preview: Blue Devils to host Stevens Point Saturday

THIS WEEK'S GAMES:  There isn't a team in the WIAC that still does not have a chance to qualify to the WIAC Tournament and UW-Stout (6-16, 4-9 WIAC) and UW-Stevens Point (11-12, 6-8 WIAC) are both seeking to lock down a spot in the tournament.  The teams will meet Saturday, Feb. 14 at 3 p.m. Stout is looking to shake off a three-game losing streak, while Pointers will try to shake a two-game skid. Stevens Point is currently in fifth place, while Stout is tied with UW-River Falls for seventh, one game out of the playoff picture.

WEBCASTS: All UW-Stout home games will be available in a live video stream by Blue Devil Video, with Sam Ripp on the call. WMEQ 880 Radio, with Pete Knutson, Jimmie Kaska, Jay Fall or Jake Bostrom, will broadcast and provide a live audio stream of most away conference games. UW-STOUT THIS SEASON:  Sophomore Jenna Goldsmith is leading the team in scoring with 11.7 points and and is second on the team in rebounds with 5..9.  Goldsmith leads the WIAC in field goal percentage, shooting 56.2 percent (100-178), and is fifth in blocked shots with 27 (1.35 per game). Kyleigh Hebert is second on the team in scoring at 8.9 points and leads the team in assists with 63 (2.86/game), ranking seventh. Brea Boomer is third on the team in scorining with 8.6 points per game. Boomer is third on the team in rebounds, averaging 5.0 per game. Katelynne Folkers is leading Stout off the boards and is fifth in the conference, averaging 7.3 caroms per contest, and is averaging 8.6 points. Sarah Schoch leads the team in 3-pointers with 28 made (10th in the WIAC). Stout is being outscored 67.8-60.8.   |  2014-15 Statistics

STOUT LAST TIME OUT:  After overcoming a slow start, the Blue Devils powered back to take as much as a five point lead late in the game, but could not hold on and lost at UW-River Falls, 51-49, Feb. 11. Jenna Goldsmith led Stout with 15 points. Katelynne Folkers finished with 11 points, all in the second half. SCOUTING UW-STEVENS POINT:   The 2014-15 season has been a roller coaster for the Pointers, who can't seem to maintain any momentum. Since their first game in January, the Pointers have gone 4-7. Lauren Anklam is the only Pointer averaging in double figures, tallying 10.0. points. Kaitlyn Jacobs, who is averaging a team-high and second in the league 7.9 rebounds, is averaging 9.6 points per contest.  Traditionally a defensively strong team, the Pointers are allowing 55.1 points per contest, second to UW-Oshkosh, but are the lowest scoring team in the league at 57.4 points.  |   Pointer Statistics

THE POINTERS LAST TIME OUT:  Joann Wolfenberg and Jamie Destache each tallied 10 points on Wednesday evening, but the Pointers could not overcome shooting 29 percent in the second half (9-31) as the Pointers fell 64-52 at Kachel Gym in Whitewater. The Pointers opened the game as the hot-shooting team, building a 10 point lead haflway through the opening stanza. LAST TIME STOUT AND STEVENS POINT MET:   UW-Stevens Point was dominant on the boards and from the foul line on the way to a 64-51 win over UW-Stout Dec.10 at Berg Gym. The Pointers shot 31 free throws, compared to just six for Stout, and grabbed 16 offensive boards that they turned into 22 second-chance points. Katelynne Folkers flirted with a double double, scoring nine points and grabbing nine rebounds. She also added three steals and four assists for the Blue Devils. Goldsmith pulled down seven boards and blocked a pair of shots in addition to her team-high 12 points while Schoch and Brea Boomer (Sr, Grand Portage, Minn.) had eight points apiece. Hebert led Stout with six assists. For Stevens Point, four players hit double figures, led by Kaitlyn Jacobs' game-high 13 points. Jacobs also had 15 rebounds on the night. CLIMBING THE LADDER:  Katelynne Folkers has climbed to eighth on the UW-Stout all-time rebounding list with 547 career rebounds, passing Tammy Fallon (1991-95, 501 rebounds) and Lindsey Erichsen (2001-05, 502). Folkers' matched her highest rebounding totals in a single game this season with 12 against UW-River Falls. Earlier in the season, Folkers had 12 boards against  Dubuque.. Her lowest of the season, three, when Stout faced St. Mary's. Folkers currently has 745 career points. Brea Boomer currently has 432 career rebounds, ranking 16th, and has 832 career points.

AWARDS AND HONORS: Brea Boomer was selected as the UW-Stout/Northwestern Mutual Athlete of the Week, Jan. 13...Kyleigh Hebert was named to the all-tournament team at the DePauw University Amy Hasbrook Classic in December...Jenna Goldsmith was selected as the UW-Stout/Northwestern Mutual Athlete of the Week, Dec. 8...Sarah Schoch was selected to the all-tournament team at the St. Norbert Tip-Off Classic... Kyleigh Hebert and Katelynne Folkers were All-WIAC honorable mention selections in 2013-14.

STOUT LAST SEASON: Virtually out of the playoff picture as the season wore down, UW-Stout (11-5, 7-9 WIAC) put together a four-game winning streak to conclude the regular season and earn the fourth seed in the WIAC tournament. TRADITION: In 10 of the last 15 seasons, Stout has been either the first or second leading scoring team in the WIAC. In the final team standings, Stout has finished no lower in the conference than fourth in 12 of the last 15 years.

TEAM CAPTAINS: Seniors Brea Boomer, Haley Froehlich and Katelynne Folkers, along with junior Kyleigh Hebert, are 2014-15 team captains.

THE COACHES: UW-Stout: Mark Thomas (448-291) is in his 28th year as the coach of the Blue Devils. Thomas has led his teams to 10 national playoff berths, nine times in the NCAA. A six-time WIAC coach of the year, the Blue Devils have won five conference titles and four conference tournament championships under Thomas' tutelage. His teams have twice been to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. Thomas is the first WIAC coach to have reached 400 career wins. Thomas also has the most wins of any Stout basketball coach, either men's or women's. Dwain Mintz coached the men's basketball program for 27 years and compiled a 385-280 record.  UW-River Falls: Cindy Holbrook.(x) recently notched her 200th career win and is in her 15th season as the head coach of the Falcons.  UW-Stevens Point: Shirley Egner (485-211) is the winningest coach in WIAC history and is in her 26th year as the head coach of the Pointers.

THE ROAD TO 400 WINS: Mark Thomas' first collegiate win came the second game of his first season when his Blue Devils, which had won only two games over the previous two years, defeated Mt. Senario, 73-44, in November, 1987. The wins came more often after that. Thomas got his 50th win, Feb. 28, 1991, 71-60, over Cardinal Stritch. The 100th win came Jan. 10, 1994, an 80-59 win over UM-Morris. No. 200 came at UW-River Falls, a 78-74 victory on Jan. 5, 2000. Thomas' 300th win came in overtime, a 76-68 decision over UW-Stevens Point, Jan. 29, 2005. Thomas' 400th win came at UW-Stevens Point, a 90-76 decision, Feb. 3, 2010.

CONFERENCES: UW-Stout is a member of the nine-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-Eau Claire. UW-Oshkosh, UW-La Crosse, UW-Stevens Point, UW- Platteville, UW-River Falls, UW-Superior, and UW-Whitewater. Superior will be leaving the WIAC after this season.

UP NEXT: The Blue Devils will close out the regular season when they host UW-Superior, Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m., then travel to UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Feb. 21 for a 3 p.m. contest.
